    Thanks, Mike and Robert. That was truly entertaining on a young Friday evening. It was even inspiring for someone unlikely to point my camera at a human being unless I am safe in a camouflage tent with a 300 mm lens and shutter set to electronic to reduce chances of being approached (a slight exaggeration of the average introvert in public). Even though I am unlikely to walk up to strangers it is always a delight watching experienced professionals of anything thrive in their element.

    • @MikeBrowne

      Thank you @glacieractivity. I can tell from your comments that it's something you'd like to do - but it's too far outside your comfort zone right now. I'm doing a 1 day workshop in London this september where street will be involved on the photowalk part of the day. There's plenty to photograph besides people, but it would be the perfect place to grow your confidence because I'd be right by your side. Please take a look at the link below. If you come, I promise to help you... MB

    Been watching you for a number of years now Mike, now, at the moment I’m recovering in bed after a hip replacement so I’ve been doing what I love, looking through inspirational photography vids, tips, tricks etc. Today I have hit a brick wall, if I see another sub framed shop doorway with a member of the public walking past I think I’ll scream. I’m finding this composition trick so cliche now, and and they are about as common as fish in the sea. I’ve lost count on how many I’ve watched today alone. Sorry for my negativity, perhaps it’s the pain I’m currently suffering as a result of a new hip. Sorry Mike, I really needed to get that off my chest. I know what you are thinking, get out with your camera, I’d love to. In fact as soon as I am fit enough I will. I love creativity.

    Hi Mike, thanks for introducing us to your wonderful guest Rob Irving i certainly learned new things from your video. Thank you for writing on the screen about Planimetric Composition, making backgrounds seem flat. Always learning new techniques and Compositions from your Channel. I really found this topic useful, and liked when you said it wasn't painful that the young couple said no to a photo. The worse thing they can say is no. Thank you for sharing this great video. 😃

    Really enjoyed that. And that you came across some fellow Aussies! Hahahah. I wanted to stop and chat when they popped up. I enjoyed most, just seeing the way in which Rob introduced himself, connected, and asked. I had an interesting experience recently where I was out in the local Botanic Gardens here in Tassie just mucking about with some ideas, and another person volunteered themselves to be a model! I got their email address, and sent them a copy of the image. Was a fabulous moment. And they enjoyed the image.

    Thanks both, I really enjoyed watching this video. As someone who would really like to try street photography, watching how Rob scouted and set-up his locations was truly inspirational. Particularly the amount of attention that he paid to the colour coordination between his chosen backgrounds and his subject's and the level of patience required to get 'that perfect shot'. The method of using 'planimetric staging' (which before tonight I had never heard of) works perfectly for this genre. I cannot wait to get out and try this for myself. Also, there is a great chemistry between you both which not only makes for great entertainment but also, very educational content. More please!!

My profile photo was done 27th April next to the local cemetery of the little town i live in, which is only 25 minutes North East of Bendigo. About two hours south you're at the great Ocean Rd or even Melbourne, bit over two hours south west Halls Gap and the Grampians national Park, about 3 hours East to the Alpine national Park area 😉

      Thanks @chrisbrown6432. Setting are mentioned when I was explaining the focus hack. But remember the settings I used probably won't work for you because light is always changing. So whilst the aperture needs to be around f11 or smaller for depth of field, shutter and ISO will vary. If you would like me to clear any confusion about this, enrol on my 4 week Masterclass course. According to reviews on Trustpilot it's taken hundreds of photographers from Zero to hero. Link below with all the info and a free sample... MB

    That was a very interesting video. I think the first thing I'd say to a stranger is that I am not charging them anything. I'm sure many people have been snapped, in tourist areas especially, and then a request for payment ensues.

    • @MikeBrowne

      Requests for payment can haapen in some places and cultures, unlikely in othere. If somewhere it's liely I ask and if they say yes, either say i'm not prepared to pay, or negotiate a price. In some circumstances I think it's important to give something back, especially where there's povery because thaey have something we want - a great photo... MB

    Thanks Mike,. I am subscribed but hasn't seen this before, don't know why. I loved this video. One question, if it's not too long to answer, when you do street photography you talk about pre-setting the exposure, why don't you ever throw in auto-ISO? I mean, set the exposure within reason in manual and let auto-ISO fine tune it.

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi @matsjonsson4019. Thank you for your kind comment. I don't use auto iso because when the shutter or aperture is changed so I can get a brighter or darker look, the auto ISO tinks the exposure is incorrect and over rides what I set. Any auto exposure mode will also change exposure as you change composition. Include more of something white and it'll darken the exposure. Include more of something dark and it'll brighten it. Eeven though they are both in the same light and should be the same exposure. If you're struggling with this please get on my Masterclass In Photography online course which will clear this and other ambiguities for you. You can even try it for free. Link below...

    Hi Mike can you explain the tip re focusing for street photos you got from Gareth Danks in detail as I didn't really get it?

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  Před rokem

      Sure @242garyp. Different focal lengths have different depth of field. Short has more, long has less - until you hit the infinity point beyond which everything becomes sharp. So by using a short focal length of around 30mm and an aperture of f10 you have lots of depth of field to play with. Therefore you only need to use two focus zones. One for close and one for distant.
      There's a whole section about focal length, where to focus, Infinity and a ton more in my online Masterclass course. I've put a link for you below where you can enrol or try a free sample.
      I just realised I mistakenly put the wrong card link in my video at 3:57, it should have gone to Gareth's video about this focus hack, not just his channel. Sorry about that, I've updated it so you can go check Gareth's explanation out now. ... MB

    Can you just take photos of people walking by without getting in trouble?

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  Před rokem +1

      Hi @markbrown8251. Legally speaking in the UK you can in public places, but you cannot sell them comercially without a signed release from them. Depending on individuals, cultures and a variety of human factors someone may not like it and ask you not to / to delete it / or just ask why you did it. Each involving whatever response is appropriate. The most important thing is don't be sneaky about it because you'll come across as suspicious. When you're confident in your actions, people around you will have confidence in you and trust you. BUT be aware of cultural difference. In Islam and Muslim cultures it's not acceptable to photograph women without permission. In Asia no one seems to give a hoot provided you're not stopping them go about their daily business...

    Does the world really need another picture of a person walking past a brightly coloured wall or shop front ,
    All this talk of rule of third and the need for red objects etc… is just so done already , it’s time for street photographers to search for their own style and create new and innovative rather work than just repeating what has already been done by the greats of the past , let’s keep street photography interesting people

      You're not wrong but many people want to know where to start and cover the basics, before they can start to develop their own unique style.
