  • Greetings, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” CZcams channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and today in video #24 we’re going to have a quick look at nine different paint colours. Among the five different 1969 Ford passenger vehicle lines, these nine paint colours were available EXCLUSIVELY on the Thunderbird. We’ll see relevant period Ford literature, large paint samples of each of the nine colours that includes their FoMoCo mix numbers, and photos of ’69 T-Birds painted these colours. We’ll close the video with a look at a paint manufacturer’s 1969 Thunderbird chip chart. If you like this video, please spread the word about the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” CZcams channel with your old car friends. Let’s get going!

@pjesf, thank you - I appreciate your feedback! I am really pleased with how the split-screen of acetate with the paint sample under it on the left and the paint sample on the right turned out in the video. Scanning those nine paint samples was not easy because they are quite curled in the bottom portion after 54 years!

Very well done presentation on all these colors. Seeing them on the actual cars and added benefit it really gives you the accurate representation of what those colors look like. IMO every one of those colors is a beautiful color. As are the cars themselves.

A great summary, Adrian. FYI, the 1969 dealer promo model cars came in two colors, Morning Gold and Royal Maroon. I don't think I've ever seen an actual car painted Morning Gold. I do remember seeing the Copper Flame and Lilac Frost versions vividly. Each was very stunning in person.

Thank you Adrian. A very timely presentation as I was about to “dive in” to research 1969 color code “Y” as there is an outstanding example of Burnt Orange poly 1969 Cougar for auction on eBay right now. When I saw the car I was certain it was the same as “Indian Fire Poly” used on the Mustang for 1969. Thanks to your image of 1969 PPG samples and codes I was able to confirm the match straight away. Well done!

Interesting colours. Thanks, Adrian, for sharing your knowledge on these old cars. I am an old car enthusiast, and particularly Fords, no doubt on account of my dad driving mostly Fords. We lost him in 2013 so I understand the triggers of nostalgia you refer to. Keep up the great work Adrian.

Thanks for producing this, Adrian. I was always a "Ford" guy and worked there in Dearborn in '69 - '73. Was in Engineering (EEE Building), Dyno, Computer Lab, and Test Track Emissions. I knew these vehicles in quite detail, however not to the level that you are able to achieve. Thanks for the memories!

Such a great video. I love the way you focus on a particular aspect of whatever Ford model you're delving into.
My pang of nostalgia is thinking back on my Aunt Janie's brand new loaded 1969 Thunderbird 4-door Landau in Indian Fire (a beautiful one-year-only color) with black top and black cloth and vinyl Brougham interior. It was the car that, at age 7, started my lifetime obsession with cars, particularly Thunderbirds and Lincolns.

…ohh, Adrian!!!…many thanks for the surprise trip down my very personal memory lane…
…though the final color covered in your segment, it was worth the wait, for I owned a ‘69 Town Landau identical to the one you pictured in alligator Black padded vinyl over Oxford Gray…
…it was a highly impressive, if not somewhat sinister looking vehicle…so much so that when I parked near the then-Sears tower in Chicago, I overheard a passerby saying, “you’d better not mess with that guy…he’s got to be with the Chicago mob”…true story…
…thereafter he was christened “Luca” after one of the mob enforcers in “The Godfather”…
…that aside, my Mom, who hails from Chicago absolutely loved driving “Luca”, she said she loved the throaty response from the 429 4 bbl. and just how absolutely quiet and smooth it’s highway ride was..,
…out of all the noted colors, my favorite was actually Copper Flame, which was a uniquely impressive color, particularly on the slick roof Coupe…
…many thanks, again Adrian…and kudos on your carefully prepared and professional presentation….you have a new subscriber as a result…I look forward to additional CZcams offerings..
…and, lastly, may you and your loved ones enjoy a festive, grateful and memorable Holiday Season…😎

So many beautiful paint colors available in that era on the Thunderbird. It would've been difficult to for me to choose a paint color ordering one new back in the day, although I've always been partial to Lilac Frost which is so elegant and very uncommon. Then again...

We had a 69 Thunderbird 4-Door Landau when I was a kid. It was a dealer demo so it was loaded. Thinking back I’m pretty sure it was the Diamond Green and had a dark green alligator grain vinyl roof. As a kid, I wasn’t sure what color it was because depending on the light it looked white, very light green, or very light yellow. The fact that it was a demo points to it being a special color code car.

Speaking of the 1969 Thunderbirds, do you know if there was any television advertising for it? I have seen on CZcams advertising for the 1968 Hot Birds and Cool Birds but mothing has surfaced for the 1969 model year which you would think the introduction of the Sunroof would have resulted in. I do have a dealer record for the 69 Bird.

@HFX1955, I couldn't find any 1969 Ford Thunderbird commercials on CZcams. If Ford didn't produced a stand-alone commercial for the '69 T-Brid, I would expect that the car would have been shown in the 1969 introduction commercial.

The reason that Thunderbird had exclusive colors was that it was built in the Lincoln factory.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 7 měsíci +4

@danielulz1640, that's an excellent theory, as the Wixom Assembly Plant in Wixom, Michigan was building the Ford Thunderbird, Lincoln Continental, and Lincoln Continental Mark III for the 1969 model year. I had the same thought when doing the research for this video. However, the Los Angeles Assembly Plant in Pico Rivera, California was also producing 1969 Thunderbirds, and a couple of the cars shown in the video had VINs showing they were produced at Los Angeles.

@@danielulz1640thanks, it is a wonderful car, a really quite loaded hardtop, but I bought it after it was vandalized with every piece of glass being smashed, the trunk lid mangled and pried open, destroying the taillamps. I couldn't stand the idea of it giving up its low mile 429 and being junked. I've been distracted with other projects lately, but I will focus on it soon and source all the glass etc and get it back on the road. It sits safe and sound in a secure building awaiting my attention.
