I ride on mainly flat roads, however we have a lot of wind where I live. (Not from eating beans) I have Ultegra 6800 group set. I’ve swapped out the inner 34 ring for a 39 inner ring. So now I have a 39/50 with. 11/28 cassette . Works very well for me.

I do a mountains to sea tour most years and bought a 44 tooth DA ring (idea is to replace the 34 tooth with the 44 at midweek into the tour (leave mountians-and into hills-requiring me to leave the 50 tooth but finding the 34 rhythm killing on the rollers and just OH SOOO missing my old 42 tooth inner at this mid point in the tour). As I would keep the 50 tooth, no chain length nor FD height adjustment. Have you had anyone with success on this mere 6 tooth difference on the 6800?

you can also do this on 105 and dura Ace cranksets. I once asked a rep from my favorite online bike shop if I could replace a bent outer 105 chainring with what at the time was the only available dura Ace 53t, and he said bolt pattern on all three were the same and compatible.

Agreed. I run 53/34 on both bikes and haven't looked back. I love having the wider end of both ranges. Occasionally you can shift down in the front and be way too under-geared. But I've found with a little attention to the climbs, that's manageable.

hopefully in january this will be my next bike...50/34..11/32 cassette is what i'm going to put on...bike shop told me 11/32 is the largest cassette they will put on... anything like 11/36 won't shift as smooth is this true?.. I put on around 7000 miles a year and a larger cassette would wear the chain & cassette ...this is what the bike shop told me...is this true?

Steve Colebaugh you can put a larger cassette as long as your derailleur has a b screw that can handle it. It will need a medium or long cage derailleur on the back.

Gianni Valente it's winter and i don't want to wear through the resin braking surface too quickly. There's a lot of grit/salt on the roads. You can't beat an alu rim for braking (apart from discs of course)
