The band was asked to write the soundtrack for the movie Highlander(about an immortal human who lives forever to fight injustice but those around him live, grow old and eventually die, hence the question who wants to live forever). Each band member wrote a song for the movie. This was Brian's contribution. As you can see Freddie interpreted everything with such emotion and made it his own. But this song has nothing to do with him or his illness.
This was written for the 1986 film "Highlander", all four members of the band wrote songs for that soundtrack (despite Queen initially only being asked to provide one song).
Brian May :- "Who Wants to Live Forever", "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)" and (not written for the soundtrack) "Hammer to Fall"
Freddie Mercury :- "Princes of the Universe"
Roger Taylor :- "A Kind Of Magic" and (not written for the soundtrack) "A Dozen Red Roses for my Darling"
John Deacon :- "One Year Of Love"

Freddie made a short speech before this song & after Another One Bites the Dust the next night's performance addressing rumors that Queen was breaking up. He told the crowd that Queen would be together until they die. And they were.👑

The song was written to the movie the Highlander with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery in the main roles. The song is about the immortality of the hero. All 4 them wrote to the film. Once you also have to check out the official video, because Brian played the organ! Roger was asked to join to the band Genesis, but he said no.

Freddie wrote more than 70 songs with Queen and he made 2 solo albums, etc.
Brian wrote more than 60 songs with Queen and he made 2 solo albums, 1 EP, etc.
Roger wrote more than 30 songs with Queen, 6 solo albums, 3 albums with his side-band, etc.
John wrote more than 20 songs with Queen and released 1 single with his side-band, etc.

One Vision was written by Queen, so I counted 1 for all the members.
Or
The Miracle was written by John and Freddie, so I count 1 for both.
And the latest album was credited to Queen . They wrote Them together.

This is one of the songs that Queen wrote for the film "Highlander" ( a 1986 fantasy action-adventure film that chronicles the climax of an age-old war between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past and present-day storylines.)
In the studio version, it is more of a duet between Brian and Freddie with Brian singing the first verse. (czcams.com/video/_Jtpf8N5IDE/video.html).
In the official video, they perform the song with a string orchestra and a boy's choir. Synths parts are played on a Yamaha DX-7 by Brian, and the orchestra was arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen. John Deacon did not participate in the original recording (but the video features him playing a white double bass), and Roger Taylor played some drum-machine parts and contributed backing vocals.
Another great Queen song is In My Defense. Done as Freddie was suffering with his illness. Love this band and Freddie forever❤❤❤❤

Another great song from the Highlander movie was written by John Deacon. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a live version, but there is a lyric video. John was fantastic at writing songs for Freddie's voice. "One Year of Love" is flat out amazing. Freddie's vocal choices - the emotion he can inject in lyrics is so unique to him.

I can never get through the videos of this song without many chills and a few tears.
Funny about the church vibe, watch the original video, where Brian sings the first part, which took part in a environment like a church with candles and choir.
Somebody to love Montreal 1981 showcases Rogers incredible skills drumming and singing .

Movie Highlander. An immortal is in love with a regular human and as time goes on they will die of old age and the immortal is depressed asking Who wants to live forever when love MUST die.

In this song's "Official Video Version"- you'll see (and hear) that it is Brian May who starts off the song, singing the opening lines. Then Freddie takes over and sings the rest. As the comments below tell you, QUEEN did the music for a film called "Highlander". In the early portion of the film, the immortal hero who has a mortal wife whom he dearly loves, but has to watch her die of old age. Hence "who wants to live forever, who dares to love forever, if love must die". The whole film is really good (bloody action/fantasy), but go in for the Queen music. "Princes Of The Universe", "It's a Kind Of Magic", "One Year of Love", etc.

Brian May came up with the melody for this song in 10 minutes sitting in the back of a taxi cab after they had just viewed unedited scenes from the Highlander movie. He was very moved by the scenes of the main character that was coming to grips with his immortality. In the official video Brian sings the first verse and Freddie sings the rest. John Deacon plays the upright bass, Roger Taylor played the drum machine with backing vocals. This song still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it the movie made the lyrics even more powerful.

Great performance, great reaction. Although I generally prefer the live versions of Queen songs. Watching Freddy perform is always a pleasure. But this is one where you might want to check out the studio version. It is truly awesome!

Brian said in an interview recently, as a songwriter, you write for someone to sing your songs & when you give your words to Freddie Mercury to sing you’re damn lucky.
At the end of the day, Brian & Freddie wrote most of Queen’s songs with Freddie I believe having a handful more than Brian.
Unfortunately we don’t have too many live recordings of this song.
This is the Friday night show, Saturday’s performance has great comments from Freddie.
What you should know is in the movie, this song is played while the main character is remembering his wife on her birthday, 400 years after her death.

Great reaction, thanks! I love this song. Freddie's emotion and power is what makes the song for me. Personally, I prefer the Saturday Wembley performance to this one. He was reportedly dealing with a cold on Friday night and I think it shows in this performance. The best performance of this song is, in my opinion, the Budapest performance on this same tour in 1986. You should put that in your cue. It's worth another listen and you can let us know which you like best.
The two LIVE versions of this song each bring something magical. I think the Budapest version better frames the drama of the song center stage. From this same film, listen to ONE YEAR OF LOVE with just John (all instruments except the sax) and Freddie. A Queen take on R&B for sure...and oh those vocals soar

I'm doing a lot of researches about Queen songs, like who played each instrument and soon I'll be in the last albums to get a better view of who wrote each song. I know that all of the speculations are on the wikipedia and other websites, but I didn't found one that is 100% correct, so I'm doing it myself and I hope I get the most precise information.

I'm betting this was one of my requests. (I "pester" a LOT over asking for this specific song from July 11 at Wembley.🤗) ....Sooooo, THANK YOU!!! This honestly MADE MY DAY because this is one of my ALL TIME FAV performances, it always makes me quite emotional.
Brian actually wrote this song for the movie Highlander, which the band wrote/recorded a number of songs for. (Of course, a LOT of people associate the song and Freddie's POWERFUL/EMOTIONAL performance, to what we all know with hindsight was beginning to take place with Fred's health... I'm one of those who definitely believes that Fred "knew something was coming", even though he hadn't received an official diagnosis yet - That would be the year after this performance.)

P.P.S. Part of what I enjoy about your videos is just how the two of you interact: I may be wrong, but you strike me as "opposites"... which completely reminds me of myself & my husband! (I also greatly respect/understand what Caspar mentioned in one of your videos, about the fact that you "keep your private life private". The internet is a WEIRD place! For myself, here where I live, my husband is a "public figure" - he's been in politics/in government for a long time, and I NEVER EVER EVER tell anyone (on Facebook, for instance) who he is, because (at least in our country) people tend to treat folks in politics/government really quite STRANGE/HORRIBLY.... It doesn't matter if I mention it here though, because no one here knows me or him or where I live!)😂

Roger saved Freddie several times in this version - Freddie chose Low notes and Roger sang the High ones. You Can hear it if you listen to some of the other version on CZcams . Have you heard about the Red Special - Brian’s guitar that he built with his father in his teens?? It has several funktions that is managed at the lower part of the guitar, maybe he is adjusting it - I don’t Think he will be handed a guitar with a broken string. He Can make it sound like anything violins small bells voices etc.
There is a new song just released which is haunting called it Face it Alone.
Brian wrote this song in the car riding home after seeing clips of the Highlander movie. He said he could hear it in his head, so he hummed it into a little recorder. Budapest version is better as others have also remarked, my opinion. Freddie sings a Hungarian folksong, wery touching.. Queen was great at persoalizing the concert. It's timeless. One of my favorites,

Great choice and reaction. I suggest watching the version from the second night even if you don’t react. I think the vocal is even better, he hits a few extra notes and the filming is also better czcams.com/video/Z1waL65aMOQ/video.html . I also suggest the studio version with full orchestra and choir.
Queen were a great live act - but you’re really missing out by ignoring the studio versions of the songs.
