  • Julia Hartley-Brewer meets author, Douglas Murray in the second episode of her new series, Inside the News. The two discuss his new book, The Madness Of Crowds: Gender, Race and Identity.
Douglas Murray examines the twenty-first century's most divisive issues: sexuality, gender, technology and race. He reveals the astonishing new culture wars playing out in our workplaces, universities, schools and homes in the names of social justice, identity politics and 'intersectionality'.

I'll answer my own question, it's probably a bit of both.

Agreed. The problem with judging people by "the content of their character" is that unlike in the 70s and 80s, it's now a settled debate. Some groups and communities have been proven to be totally lacking in character or any redeeming quality. One community in my opinion is a monolith of bad actors and poor characters. They can no longer wished to be judged by their character because they have none. I imagine MLK knew this at the time but hoped with time they'd overcome. It's utterly depressing and wholly hilarious to see them try to pretend.

Well said Karl. As a woman, I am equally horrified by the neo-feminist movement which dictates that women are better than men and I am astonished to find that even some men seem to have fallen into submission and have accepted that it is socially acceptable for women to ridicule, belittle and put men (as a group entity) down and yet it is unacceptable for women to be criticised for this (unacceptable apparently because they tells us that we women are a suppressed group!). Regardless of our gender, sexuality, race, or religious identities, we are INDIVIDUALS first and foremost and should be judged as an individual.

I wonder how well a web based global petition for reason (to show the left they are in the minority) would go? Absolutely brilliant, insightful and clear thinking here about the current madness around us. If only our politicians would listen and take note, ideally the lawyers too! Such wisdom from Douglas, especially around some of his conclusions about meaning in peoples’ lives and the need for forgiveness and understanding of others - there but for the grace of God and of history - most of which was so much worse than today, if not hellish (nasty brutish and short?!) Thank you so much.

Thanks so much for a proper intelligent, balanced and honest discussion.
What has happened to common sense? Why do so many people feel entitled to not have to make any effort or work to get what you want in life. This attitude has become a pandemic of hatred and intolerance, just because certain people want to see themselves as victims and blame everyone else for their own lack of decency and respect, they are just selfish lazy and toxic people.
Why has it become almost a crime to have your own opinion or a different opinion?
Stop the world I want to get off
