Nissan Ariya - New Zealand review

- It took a while, but Nissan is now offering New Zealand buyers the all-electric Ariya - and as Gav found out, it's a bit posh.
A quiet cabin, plenty of gadgets (check out the electric potato bin!) and a blissful ride make it a tempting offer for kiwi motorists... but all those features come at a hefty price.

Too expensive, not a competitor to BYD
Of course not, BYD is an economy brand and vehicle - not apples with apples
@@paulcockerton4158 BYD is an economy brand? I think you don't know BYD at all, BYD U8, just assume that BYD is not luxury, Nissan is no way near luxury either 😔
@@tackle9ax327 you think incorrectly
@@paulcockerton4158ya think. Nissan is a luxury brand??
@@Zarphag no far from it, but the Ariya is clearly aimed at the premium segment - BYD is bungee chordtastic. That said, the op is correct - it is too expensive and it’s not a competitor to BYD…but BYD is too expensive for what it is too
Fark nearly spat me beer out with that price. Way over the odds for what it is, not even in the conversation.
Prince William and The Artist Formerly Known as Harry... Gold!!!!
Car looks good but their pricing is too expensive, they need to be more competitive with BYD and MG
Well, yeah, them too...
and Tesla in particular
I don't believe Chinese cars are truely representative of reality in terms of cost. But I have to admit it's a huge abyss between cost of these vehicles.
I would never personally buy one but a model Y is surely a much more sensible choice at 70k or better yet an ionic5
Great review but 75k?! That’s nearly 10k on Tesla Model Y, which has more range and features.
Yes but it’s a Tesla
they have been talking about this car being on sale here for years! My friend gave up hope and bought a leaf, it is ok but it does have some shortfalls. i was also thinking about buying one ( 3 years ago) but ended up buying an MG in the meantime for SO much less than this. I could get for the money .......... well, lots! My MG zsev face lift i9s a smaller car, but it has the option of strong regen, sport mode, adaptive cruise control. It has a sun roof, + sunscreen (both motorised). normal buttons, V to L, charging port at the front, easy to use and park around town, and I can turn off the lane keep and it stays off. Isofix seat attachments for the grandkids etc. The ride is fine, the boot is big enough for the shopping, and most importantly, very good value for the price. 13 months and 0 problems. So, in the end, it is I guess, horses for courses.
Nah, that's really great value, esp if it includes V2L/V2G capability. That's awesome.
V2L definitely ought to be a standard feature in any pure electric vehicle these days, particularly in other marques working to compete with Tesla.
That Tesla still hasn't made that tech standard is the great gift to other marques. That they haven't all done the obvious thing and capitalized on that gift is just peculiar.
So, good on MG, and, smart move you, on taking that purchase option!
You can't compare MG to Nissan (have you seen MG's 0 star safety rated car just released? Yikes, in 2024 0 stars. It's cheap for a reason and it's not because they want to be nice. Not built to last and resale value will not treat you kindly. Each to their own though.
The very first EV that I saw in the flesh was in fact a Nissan Leaf. It was in 2016.... and of all places in Haast, NZ! (I hail from Melbourne, Victoria).
The price of the twin motor, I’d spend a touch more and buy a BMW i4. 115k is madness.
Ariya dreamin maaate
That price... Wow. They are going to lose out to the Chinese brands. Maybe Nissan should have taken a look at the shortcomings of the leaf (uncooled battery etc) and addressed those issues with a new leaf.
Most car companies are going to lose out to the Chinese. Especially the legacy car makers such as Nissan I'm afraid.
In conclusion,
it's a Leaf with battery liquid cooling but still no heating, nor V2L capability,
and instead has lots of trinkity tech gadgets that can be duplicated in an ICE.
how important is V2L? I’ve never wanted it, I don’t miss it with either of my EV’s, it’s like curved tvs, nobody really knew why they wanted one, now you can’t buy one.
@@MasterChief37rubbish, V2L is a godsend during a power outage. Plenty of news articles in Australia of EV owners using V2L during QLD floods to keep their fridge powered so their food doesn’t spoil and their devices can be charged
@@Clove_Parma I’ve been living in Norway since 2006, I can only remember 1 or 2 power cut since I moved. It simply isn’t an issue if you live in a country with a stable grid. I don’t go camping either, I have no use for V2L.
Okay but too pricey.
Strange the Japanese Website says they're not making the Ariya at the moment. But it's price for the 63 kWh is around $56,000 AUD so bit of a Price Gouge and extra Tax?
very nice.. but not great value when you compare the price to the BYD Atto and Seal
Nissan pioneered V2G, then they drop the feature?
Is there a link to a list of all the Spud Scores? We need that.
We're on it!
Too expensive
I'm genuinely impressed, its a good contender against quite a few other makes/models.
Great review as always.
Great review Gavin. I must say I'm very disappointed about the lack of bidirectional charging functionality especially as the Leaf has long ruled the roost in that respect and so many other EV makers are moving towards V2G ability.
I assume that it has some sort of active battery thermal management in light of the preheating function so at least Nissan have addressed that shortfall from the Leaf. Nice vehicle but it will struggle in a very competitive part of the EV market IMO.
Nice car but to expensive. Had it came on to the market a couple of years earlier it could have made a impact anyway but now they hardly sell. It’s to bad as Nissan was a real pioneer with electric cars.
Too expensive and too bad. To, Too, Two.
@@honesty_-no9he thanks for the English lesson.
These cars have sold extremely badly in USA, and at the prices you have listed I can’t see why people would buy one here over a Tesla/ Mach E or a Cupra Born . Nissan totally out of touch as usual I believe.
A model Y performance is $25k cheaper than the top spec of this
Nice review... Comes with seated heats too 😏
Seated heats? Or heated seats?
YES, I was looking for this comment! 1:59
You must be new
Before I even look at the vehicle, the price alone is not worth it when you look at a Tesla Model Y or Model 3 which are the gold standard of EVs going for a lot less
Really looking forward to seated heats in my new xtrail😂
It missed the rebate window. The car looks good.
We’re just waiting until the price of Evs matches the equivalent spec ICE car. Clearly there is still some way to go!
We bought an MG4 for $39,880 before the rebate went. I'm getting 440km range in the 80% urban use I do. It's 204hp and a great RWD chassis and a hoot to drive. LFP battery so charge to 100% with no worries. Can't see any ICE cars with this performance being way cheaper than the MG. Agree the price of this Nissan is nuts though.
The "power button" in the dash center looks the same as the start button, an odd choice. Not mentioned is that the Aryia has an electrically-excited motor rotor to reduce or eliminate the need for rare-earth metals and help coasting efficiency. For myself, if you're listening Nissan, V2L and room for a spare tyre are non-negotiable features.
Seated heats?? 😂
Front and rear seated heats!
Half the price I'll think about it
Signing my home or business over to Ecotricity sounds a high price to pay for cheap electricity 😂.
Whut
A day late and a dollar short (as the saying goes). Nissan surrendered their lead in EVs a long time ago. By only now bringing the Ariya to NZ it’s up against the Model Y, the Enyaq, the Born and the Mach-E in the same price bracket, and the being undercut by the Atto3, the MG4 and (soon) the Seal-U.
The representer I named him the "the guy wearing shorts"😊
I love new Zealand
Hey, I've been called MUCH worse than that! :D All the best! -Gav
I am a blind subscriber could somebody please tell me the price indicated on the screen?
Thanks
Sure thing. The entry level Ariya Engage will cost up to $80,000 with 402 km of range. The mid-level Ariya Advance will be up to $85,000 with the same range. And the top-spec Ariya Evolve will cost up to $105,000 with 513 km of range. The first two are front wheel drive with a 63 kWh battery, while the Evolve will be 87 kWh with all wheel drive with 2 motors (225 kW / 600 Nm). The good news is the cars use liquid cooled batteries (unlike the Leaf) and have a max DC rapid charging speed of 130 kW with a CCS connector.
@@EcotricityNZ Thanks
At that price point, I'd expect V2L *at least* be included.
A reasonable and entertaining report but nonetheless disappointing. No mention of battery technology. If its NMC it means, realistically that WLTP are 20% overstated. If it is LFP all is forgiven but please include this information.
I am an Aussie and NZ is the Beta testing for us so we are about six months to eighteen months behind in getting product so we rely on complete details.
Spuds are fun but give us chemistry.
The Leaf is an ongoing disaster in Australia with its non-thermally managed battery and accelerated degradation. Looks like the Ariya is what the Leaf should have been five years ago.
Pricing should be same or less than Kona EV or similar to Atto 3.
It is way smaller in boot capacity by hundreds of litres compared to Tesla Model Y.
Sorry they don't do LFP a major mistake.
battery chemistry doesnt have any impact to wltp range?
About 3 times the correct price. $30k would be acceptable. $70k - 110k is highway robbery. Nissan, go back and do it again.
They will lose to the Chinese.
A haval h6 starts from $36k new and that's rock bottom cheap as possible fossil vehicle junk?
This vehicle is impressive considering it has a bad drag coefficient of.029
Yikes! The price! 😮
Half the price I'll get one😂 A
No app?! Oh come on :p
With regards to road trips in this car or a Model Y using 15 kWh / 100 km the cost to recharge at Charge Net is $0.85 per kw = $12.75 plus EV Road User Charge tax at $7.60 per 100km. Well over $20 per 100km.
Or charging either EV at a night rate of 18c/kWh (if not less, as most EV owners do) plus 7.6c/km RUC is a total of $10.30/100km. A Mazda CX5 is almost identical in size and consumes 7.7L/100km which at $2.80/L costs $21.50/100km, plus has more maintenance costs. The RUC system for petrol vehicles is a work in progress so don't place your bets just yet.
What was your point again?
As I said "With regards to road trips" which you did not see. @@HarmLessSolutionsNZ
Tony, did you not see "With regards to road trips" part of my post, not everybody has the opportunity to charge overnight on a road trip at 18c.
@@miggy8011 No but any sensible EV owner fully charges at home before setting off and returns with a low battery to minimise public charging costs and with the Ariya's range of close to 500km most journeys would be predominantly done at home charging rates. Would the average ICEV driver wait until getting to Waiheke Island or Franz Joseph to fill up? Same logic.
nice looking car, but it's overpriced, especially since there's no vehicle-to-load, or wireless android auto...at least there's a flat floor - EVs with transmission tunnels is another gripe of mine
"seated heats" .... LOL
did you just say "seated heats"? 😂
Mmmmmaybe. ;)
Seated heats?!?😂
I hope the wheels do not fall off on this video :P
Unbelievable how expensive new cars are these days.. you have to be either rich or go on debt for at least 10yrs or more.
70k to 115k for a EV Nissan?? Madness
Will consider if the total range is 10k less. Starting from 66K with some room for discount would be acceptable. Otherwise, a lot more better options. Tesla, Mustang, EV5, IONIQ 5/6, you name it. Haven't tried this one yet, but based on other reviews, the suspension is a bit too firm and gets quite bumpy. If choosing for the family, then it is not a comfortable vehicle. Hence, give us a reason why this would be a better option than other brands??
Seated heat 😂
I know you're trolling with your reference to British electrical plugs, but here's why they're miles better than NZ ones: czcams.com/video/UEfP1OKKz_Q/video.htmlfeature=shared
Seated heats 😂😂😂😂
Why $40k more than a petrol??? Depreciation after one year = $40k
Why 500 pounds on "automobile" when a horse is only 50 pounds and it eats grass
If you think only EVs are going to depreciate quicker than in recent times you will be sadly mistaken.
And it's the first EV to make it from the North Pole to the South Pole!
But heavily modified and nowhere near stock.
@@kosmokramer9502 suspension lift and big tires does not make it "heavily modified"
This is a hard NO from me ...... look at KIA ev 5 coming in March 2024 ish
love the ex wife slap there ;)
I didnt like to drive that car, feels like driving a boat.
DOA at this price lol. Fashion is turning against EV’s atm. Too bad, I like EV’s idea, will wait 5 years before buying one
Lol, this is too pricey. This is why i can't justify myself moving to EV
