  • I have been running the Nissan Ariya as my Hendy Long Termer for just over 6 weeks now so here is my ownership impressions review. The Ariya wasn't a car I was that familiar with and I have spent much time in modern Nissans. Turns out this is a really great package. It certainly had edgy styling but I love the way the car isn't set up for speed but rather a nice balance of performance and efficiency.

    Bought the Ariya - its sooo comfortable, quit and nice on long rides - love it - it's my third EV and for comfort it beats my previous e-Niro and Model Y hands down!

    I like this car. It has inoffensive, non-polarising styling. Increasing the efficiency of electric cars is a very important point that you make here; the need for efficiency doesn't just go away now that fossil fuel isn't (directly, at any rate...) powering the vehicle. The charging infrastructure here on O'ahu is virtually non-existent even after over a decade of electric car imports. Charging at home is a necessity here.       In 2016, Hyundai released the 28kWh Ioniq. It was the most efficient EV as of yet, and by quite a margin. It was also much more useful than it's closest competitor, the Tesla Model 3, and a very well made car. However, it wasn't sold in huge numbers, because Hyundai couldn't make it in huge numbers, but particularly because people want at least 200HP and they want SUVs and crossovers. It's thus consumers who make EVs inefficient, not manufacturers. Particularly in the US.

    I liked your comments on EV efficiency (very important) and acceleration being a trade off against range.
    We are on our 5th BEV over the last 14 years. My wife drives a Zoe 135GT and I drive a Skoda Enyaq IV80x with tow hitch, both cars have CCS charging, as a result of which we don't carry a charging cable in either car, so we use DC chargers when we are out & about. Nearly all our journeys are long ones.

    Did you see a couple from Aberdeen are driving an off road converted Ariya Pole to Pole. Impressive range on the car. I recently did a trip North on the "Electric A9" as the Scottish Government have billed it and found the availability of chargers very good and the chargers are mostly very modern and more updated than the ones in Central Scotland. We had changed our driving profile to more local journeys but will be taking the car North again in the event of another holiday opportunity.

    If it's 'similar' to a Qashqai it will be the perfect car to commute: Super practical but no real drivers fun and that's indeed what we need 90% of the time. But some fun once in a while is sooo very nice to have!

    Great upload as usual. I really enjoyed the honesty about range over acceleration. I had a Jaguar Ipace ,which was very fast 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds. However ,the range was shocking 200 miles on a good day. I swapped to a VW ID5 recently which gives me around 290 miles from a smaller 77kwh battery. I'm much more relaxed on longer journeys now and very happy with the ID5.

      Ped had the I Pace 0-60 timed at 4.1 seconds and I would sooner have not only the performance but also the road holding that the I Pace offers & that’s why I’m going for the I Pace 400 Sport when my current 4 years PCP I-Pace comes to an end.
      Yes, you are right on the mileage, I have to plan Motorway journeys to recharge @ 150-160 miles which is disappointing but as Ped says… I’d sooner have the performance over the range 😁👍

    Been waiting for this review, so thanks for that.
    Good to know you have enjoyed the car and appreciate that the looks of it are a tad Marmite.
    Range and Charging: I have a relative 200 miles away who I regularly visit. They live in a terrace house in town with no personal parking space so home charging isn't an option. That means finding a public charge point, hoping it's working/unoccupied and paying an inflated price for the units. I'll ignore the 'what do you do while you hang around for the charge'.
    My 1.4 Tiguan or the 1.2 Yeti will do the 400 miles return trip without a problem and if I don't need a break en route, I needn't stop. I'm not against EVs, it's just they are neither affordable or suitable for my lifestyle.

      It's a new era happening now in transport because of climate change like it or not. Oil will get much harder to find in about 2050, so we will all have to adjust our lives. It's no bad thing & we just start planning journeys & infrastructure has to grow as well. I find it new & interesting, rmbr the first cars invented were bty driven over 120yrs ago.

    I now had my ARIYA 87KW Evolve now for over 7 months and yes it has had one or 2 problems, as with all new technology but I wouldn't change it. Range has never been a problem and I love the ride and usability of it. I chose to have a tow bar fitted for my small trailer and its fine I get a few stares using the an EV for towing stuff to the local tip but i really cant see why I expect we will all get used to EVs now.
    Over having driven on local roads and motorways it excellent, power when you need it smooth quiet ride always.

      Indeed. Have owned the smaller battery base model for abt 6 months. Mixed driving returns 250 miles. An excellent car - comfortable and spacious, as you say.

    You're right about the 0 to 60 time because after 10 months of ownership I am well past the foot to the floor driving. I now mostly drive in eco mode as range is probably priority now and it's not just about getting as much miles as possible but the cost of these miles as well. But if you need the power it's there and its still a great feeling. Doing some motorway driving recently I drove with the regeneration braking switched off and I was surprised how much my consumption improved. Really enjoy and appreciate your videos. Thank you.

    The biggest stresses with charging are the inaccuracies of the maps (zap map, and charge map, and the council website, didn’t tell me there were 6 chargers next door to my destination, ended up parking an hour’s bus ride away), and the lack of a queuing lane when you do find one

      Tesla tech is rubbish compared to the likes of other cars the only bonus of a telsa is self drive thats not fully legal here in the uk yet @@KentBuchla

    Great balanced review. So many EV reviews focus on things like peak charging speeds which are less relevant when you 99% charge at home. It’s hard to recommend an EV to anyone in the UK that can’t charge at home right now.

    Great on Pete, good to know that efficency is starting to be more of a thing with manufacturers. Definatly need more charging otherwise why go electric!!

      @@PetrolPed there’s plenty of charging available I would say that there’s 90% availability most of the day. What there isn’t is sufficient peak time main route charging. You can go past Insta volts and genies that are empty all day long. Mid morning 20 to 11 Lunch times 12.30 to 13.30 and evening rush hour is completely different. Plenty of capacity it’s just not convenient and a wait for a BEV is an hour it’s 7 minutes for an ICE owner.

    Yes it was a good well balanced review. Well done. I’ve had the 63 KW base version at just over £42k for 10 months now. Like you James it was more than I really wanted to pay. But I’m really pleased with it. It’s well made and has laminated windows all around which helps to make it a very quiet car. I tend to drive economically and during the summer months on journeys of around 125 miles, it still showed I had 130 miles range left. I was quite surprised. So the lighter weight 63 Kw battery version does very well for hauling what is quite a large car. The acceleration is more than any 2 litre SUV, it just goes on and on in sport mode, which I rarely use, but it can be fun.
    So I’m very pleased with the Ariya and it’s a lovely car to drive. Quite a few comments from people have said they like the look of the car. I think Nissan have a winner here.

    Enjoyable video. I've had our Skoda Enyaq iV 60 for 12 months, 10,000 miles, and used public charging 3times, which says it all. The efficiency has been 3.5 miles / KWh Sept to May and 4.1 May to Sept. Interestingly that's with 21" wheels but it has heat pump. Still think the Enyaq is better than the Ariya.

      I've never sat in a Nissan Ariya, but I have sat in a Skoda Enyaq. Skoda are nailing interior styling and quality these days. The Enyaq is a cracking car, although it's larger than you might imagine.....

    One charging issue does not reflect an entire charging system. Ionity are always full. Mainly due to the fact that manufacturers give customers deals for Ionity. For example for my Volvo I pay 35p per kWh. Compared to the 75p or more it would cost elsewhere.
    Personally I just use Ionity in the morning early on.
    Just looking at how charging on the A1 has changed over the past 2 years is fab. I have no worries on there. Batches of Instavolt, new chargers at Newark. Bank of chargers at Grantham. All in the last couple of years. Though as the range of cars is increasing all the time i require them less than in the past.

    Hi PP, you never said where you did eventually find a charger when you were down to 10% left, I wouldn't have thought you ran out of charge on your Journey, still the range anxiety must have started to kick in a little bit. Another great review as always, especially when it comes to everyday EV usage.👍

      I got on the IONITY after waiting for about 10 minutes then charged very quickly of about 20 minutes 👍

    What I’d like to see is more destinations chargers at hotels and car parks. Then when overnighting away from home I could charge up. I’d also like to see more 11kw chargers that one could top up with as an hours break would give 40 miles and that in most cases would be enough. The reason I say 11kw is in a lot of places the infrastructure isn’t available for lots of rapid chargers.

    Thanks for the review. I bought a Nissan LEAF last spring. The Ariya was just getting to the dealerships here in the states then so I wondered if I was making a good choice with the LEAF instead. Turns out I love my Leaf SL Plus but like you I have only needed to use a DC fast charger one time. Lucky for me a charger was available at a mall near the food court so that was a great experience. The only downsides to the LEAF is the lack of active cooling of the battery packs limiting multiple DC charging within a long trip and the Chademo DC port instead of CCS or North American Standard recently adopted here. Purchasing an Ariya would have eliminated both of those possible future problems as infrastructure is developed further here in the states but . . . I was able to purchase my LEAF with only 6,000 miles on it at 4 years old as a warranted certified used car basically in new condition so a new Ariya would have been about $20,000 USD more. :-) At least for the time being I believe I made the correct decision especially especially since I absolutely LOVE the LEAF's styling too. My LEAF averages 3.7 to 4.2 miles per kWh which I have been very pleased with too. Who knows, maybe the Ariya will be my next EV hopefully some time in the distant future.

    Had my 1st long trip in my MYP Manchester to london arrived with 25% left exactly what it said I’d have! Charged for free at my hotel for return journey so £14 London and back. My previous ice car would be £160! Also my return was Friday night and if I needed a charge ionity had 10 free chargers available…

    Just Got my 2024 Nissan Ariya and its my first EV. Once your mindset changes from the need to gas up, and get accustom to charging, its a much better experience. I love the car. Its more luxury compated to my brothers tesla which is pretty basic inside and rides like a tractor. The only thing Tesla has going for them when it comes to their cars, is the software, which is far superior to the Ariya. I have the 87kw battery which is suppose to get 272+ miles but driving habits can affect that. I average about 250'ish miles on a full charge so that allows me to do a 60 mile commute for about 3.5 days without charging at all. I know its best not to charge to 100% but i do since i have such a long distance work commute but, i notive each time i charge to 100% it gives different range amounts, for example, sometime when i charge to 100% it will say i have 304 miles, and other times it will say 280 or 270. All in all, i am glad i dont use gas anymore and will probably stick with EV's.

      I've heard you can't program the charging to 80%, is that so? Are wipers auto or can you choose the gap. My Renault MK3 Scenic auto wipers is tardy & in light rain just not sensitive & I have to flick manually.

    Agree with your review of charging availability around the country and have witnessed the queuing often at motorway service parks. However we are taking our first step with a plug in arriving soon. This will work for our numerous trips to see family around the UK with petrol and electric range for our local travel around home.

    I thought that the Ariya also has 22kW AC charging which nobody else seems to use. My own EV has only 11kW charging but if the local (all 50kW) chargers are busy often there is nobody in the 22 or 43kW AC units so I plug into one of them. Also unlike the 50kW units here the 22kW don’t have a 40 minutes time limit with no return to the same charger within 90 minutes so public AC charging isn’t dead yet.

      It does but most domestic charging is based on single phase power at 7kW. You’ll need 3 phase power to get 22kW 😬

    As you rightly stated, most of us aren’t looking for 0-60 in 3sec. My Niro does it in 7.5 and that’s really quick enough, for me at least! After all when I was young and the dolomite sprint first came on the market it did 0-60 in a blistering 8.5 seconds 😮. What worries me is in ten or so years when the boy racers get their hands on these ridiculously fast cars, we’ll have even more RTCs.

      I understand they are due to bring out a RWD version in the UK - currently FWD or the full beans e force which is AWD.
      I think a RWD Ariya is a very attractive proposition for a family EV. The HUD display make the minimalist styling an edge more practical than having to always avert your gaze from the road to a central iPad-like screen like some other vehicles have. And the materials are indeed much plusher than a lot of the competition.
      The peak charge speed isn’t up there with Tesla, Tycan or Korean E-GMP platform vehicles but apparently the charge curve is near flat for at least 22-62% SOC so good overall.

    I've had an EV for nearly 6 months and only had to use public chargers once, so very much like you, range hasn't been an issue 😁.
    Home charging is very convenient (probably essential if you have an EV), but I do worry about longer journeys and being able to use public chargers (this is my main concern about having an EV).
    Otherwise, I really like the way EVs drive - I've been very happy with mine.
    I don't like the styling of the Nissan, though 😂.

      But as charging infrastructure increases, hopefully with reliability to match, your longer journey worries can only decrease....

      @Brian-om2hh Now, after 9 months, I've only used public chargers twice, both relatively painless 😂.
      Which I think means I did my research and came to the right conclusion, that an EV would suit my lifestyle 😁.
      Unfortunately, not everyone has off-street parking where they can charge their EV overnight, so it is very important that the networks roll out new charging sites where there are multiple charging bays.
      Whether the networks will actually be able to make money is another story.

    Some cars are colour sensitive and although subjective I think the copper colour is the best for the ariya. ( There's a sea of grey out there but it's easier to sell on ) . Ref. Public charging I own a hybrid and can't charge at home so EV will be when I have to buy one. I'm happy at present to not have to worry about a queue and waiting 35-40 mins for an onward journey.

      The darker or grey colours are best for blending in that awful black pseudo grill thing. In red white etc it's not a good look for me. Take 6in.of the depth & it would look more like the Scenic EV.

    You made me laugh when you said Tesla owners will say that’s not very efficient…as it was exactly what I was thinking. Caught out!
    More efficiency means less resources for the same travel which is important. I’m surprised by how far we go in our 60KWh battery model Y.
    All your comments about usability and range over speed are spot on. Most of us are not car reviewers and want practicality and efficiency over a 0-100 speed. We have ours in chill mode so choose that every day.

    Hi Ped, very comprehensive review as per usual. The quality of your videos actually makes you feel as though you are in the car with you when watching on a large TV screen. The familiar elephant in the room, range anxiety lurks in the background as always. Yet another behemoth SUV unfortunately! Well made, efficient, ticks many boxes! Public charging infrastructure is already being constrained by grid accessibility, and that responsibility lies with central government. There are some great examples of private sector investment out there, but if they can’t get a grid connection it will stifle investment. 😟

    Good video Pete. Looks an interesting car and not too bad efficiency wise, given the size.
    Love or hate them, I still can’t look past Tesla when it comes to EVs. My M3 RWD is IMO the best daily driver money can buy at present. It’s quick, fairly fun to drive, amazingly efficient (around 5 mile per KWh), a wide and generally issue free charging network, practical, great tech and is practically free to run (if charging of Solar). It’s great to see a lot more options coming to market, but the rest of the manufacturers have a way to go if they are going to compete.

      It's great until you get on the highway. So much road and wind noise it renders the radio useless. Of course, the ride is also abysmal. My lease is maturating in 2 1/2 month and I can hardly wait to get rid of it!

      Teslas look too minimalistic inside (cheap) and the M3 stying isn’t for everyone, neither is the MY. Nope, much better looking cars out there not just built for profit but in general EVs and cars are way too expensive and need to half in price or less so everyone can enjoy a newer car and a more environmentally clean one.

    I cannot really understand why the Ariya has not apparently caught on - or at least that is my perception judging by how few I have seen out on the road. I quite like the styling as it is a bit more distinctive than the VW iD.4, Skoda Enyaq and Ford Mustang Mach-E but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I suspect now that Nissan have reduced the model prices and crucially now have a version starting below £40k there might be more interest. Tesla’s price cuts earlier in the year undoubtedly made a number of (most) EVs look comparatively expensive. I am surprised at efficiency as this must be a heavy car if it has a 80 KWh battery pack.
    PS I hope that you are going to be able to test the Renault Megane E-Tech shortly. Hendy’s who you work with are big Renault dealers and you seem to have tested EVs from most of the other marques that they sell.

    Good video Pete. Please don't dismiss all BMW's at being poor on efficiency. My i3S did 5.3 miles/kWh on my daily commute last week and the worst I've seen over the winter was 3.9 miles/kWh. Luckily I haven't needed to use a public charger in the 9 months of ownership and charging from home is a breeze especially being on an EV tariff but like you say, the UK charging network still has some way to go to convince more people on EV ownership.

      The UK charging network is a changing situation, with more chargers being installed every month. The network isn't actually that bad for just 10 years in.... The petrol station network just 10 years after the motor car first appeared, was probably still virtually non-existent...... Things will change considerably over the next 10+ years.

    Just wanted to say Google maps shows available rapid chargers. Search rapid chargers and it shows you nearest chargers and on some availability.

    I bought the Kia EV6 for the perfomance and speed. But after six months, my only complaint is that the seats aren't that comfortable. Not anything I noticed in the test drive, but after sitting in it for three hours for a long drive. You start to feel it in your butt. Ariya didn't make my list for the charging speed and range, but having owned an EV, the range issues aren't that big a deal. I'm getting 360 miles in ECO mode in mid summer but definitely got the 282 in mid winter. I bet the range in the Ariya will be far higher than expected. I've heard the same from other EV owners about the Mustang Mach-e and Hyundai cars.

    I love my base model Genesis GV60 2022 version. I am getting close to 4 miles per kw hour on a regular basis. Both the KIA EV6 and the Ariya were serious contenders when I got the Genesis.

    Been waiting for this one Pete 👍 first off I really like the way you review cars you do it in such a good honest way👏👏, the Ariya is a fantastic car only managed to drive one on short journeys, but Iam glad you mentioned the infrastructure its lagging behind Iam afraid to say and even worse is there reliability..!!🤔 I had a Leaf on PCP for two years only need to public charge it a couple off times as I did the rest at my work saying that things have changed since, seems to be backward moves rather than forward..!!, the worry is the clock ticking if they the Government want us to revert to electric..!! hmm time will tell I suppose.

    Im changing my iX3 in Oct and this could be a front runner. Ok it doesnt have the premium badge but it certainly looks and feels premium. The updated ix3 is probably circa £65k which im unwilling to pay. I also want a car thats built as an EV from the ground up. Great video, didnt come across it a year ago.

      Porsche are not alone on synthetic fuels. Toyota have been making hydrogen IC engines commercially since the 80's and it is proven tech. It's also retro-installable on most IC engines, albeit with some sacrifices to power depending on the engine.
      On the battery front, Toyota (again) are streets ahead on solid state batteries which they are mating with hybrid technology, meaning that the inefficiencies involved in producing a PHEV lugging a large/heavy battery everywhere will - if not disappear altogether - be largely mitigated.
      Couple SS batteries (which are built without the filth involved in producing "traditional" batteries) with hydrogen and you're really getting close to the best of both worlds.

      Efuel in normal 19:05 passenger cars is an extremely unlikely prospect. Terribly inefficient use of clean electricity.

      Forget synthetic fuels. The cost will cause you to soil yourself. You can buy Aspen synthetic petrol today in Britain. It costs around £30 per gallon.... The logistics don't scale either. It is estimated the production plant in Chile may (may) eventually be able to produce 500 million litres per year. The World uses more than that in a single day. The US alone would need around 900 e fuel production plants like the one in Chile...... And the production of all this e fuel would require huge amounts of electricity.....See where I'm going with this?

    Why do manufacturers put gloss black trims around wheel arches ? Yuk. It makes the car look cheap. Perhaps its in case people scratch their car and its cheaper to replace a gloss trim than get the car fixed at a body shop ?

    Thanks, yes ,0-60 times are a bit irrelevant for most people, most EVs are more than adequate. Range, efficiency and charging speed are the most important. Thanks for the discussion on efficiency, I had an eNiro that gave nearly 4m/Kwh, I now have an EV6 with 16000 miles on it and done 2 Winters and just starting my second Summer, my cumulative efficiency is 3.5, which for the AWD on 20 inch wheels is very good.
    Not too keen on the looks of the Nissan.

    Its a great point re the 0-60 time vs efficiency, i could count on my right hand the number of times ive used Sport mode in my ix3. I use economy and comfort 90% of the time.

    I've never really been convinced about Nissan reliability and longevity. The Quashqai my neighbour bought new in 2014, and traded in earlier this year, hasn't changed my view. He had several mechanical and electrical issues during his ownership.... The shape of the Ariya doesn't win me over. My money would go on a South Korean EV at the moment......

    We use public chargers quite a lot with our Leaf (1 year) and have not a had a problem so far (mainly in Scotland and mainly charge at home) with queues - sometimes broken although often a quick phonecall gets it going. The most annoying thing is the cost which on some is going up at the moment when the cost of juice is falling.

    Don't know if I'd describe 3.5miles/kWh as efficient! My Kona avgs 4.5 over 22k miles (though i do have a heat pump for winter heating and generally try to be more efficient).
    Definitely recommend korean and tesla as the more efficient brands seem to have made it a big focus.

    Looks nice that Pete (better then the Renault Arkana you had). I used to work for a Nissan outlet & there was a long wait for their EV revolution to kick in following the introduction & then mk2 version of the Leaf but I believe there are a few more coming through the pipeline.
    Range anxiety will rumble on for years as infrastructure will only ramp up significantly after demand reaches a desired level (sadly).
    Next long termer.... Hendy Maserati surely 😂

    Nice review of the Ariya.
    Ref public charging, I find it's ok if you stick to the bigger sites. I have had to queue a few times, but never more than 10 minutes because at sites with lots of high power chargers the turnover is very high. I always avoid the smaller sites with 1-2 50kw chargers if I actually need a charge. Sometimes I'll plug in at a services if I've stopped for other reasons.
    Fortunately there are more and more big sites now - huba with 6 chargers or more. More are going in. There is no drive within England that I couldn't make in our car (ID3) without complete confidence, I've lots lots of long trips in it. A big challenge though is easy communication of where the good sites are, to people who don't (unlike me) want to be a nerd and spend time on EV forums. There still isn't a perfect answer to that and it does need resolving. Zapmap is ok but doesn't provide enough filters in the free version, or a good enough UI, to work for everyone.

      And that is probably the best way to charge on a longer trip. You have to stop occasionally, so 15 minutes charge here, and 15 minutes charge there, all helps, without actually inconveniencing you....

    Thanks Ped another thought provoking video. Can’t help thinking that EV’s fill me with the dread of any movie described as a “dystopian nightmare.” Perhaps battery development, maybe using graphene, may herald in a vehicle that looks light and agile, not like a jelly mould or a breeze block. At the ripe old age of approaching 66 I honestly think I’ve seen and driven probably the best the planet has had to offer in design and performance/feedback and feel good, not withstanding the Koenigsegg Gemera! You seen that I presume….geez Louise! 😜

      Maybe only public rapid charged a dozen times in 2.5 years of owning an EV. As long as you can charge at home it's very rare to have to to be honest. My car will do at least a weeks or even 2 commutes before needing another charge.
      The rapid charging is framed as a petrol pump replacement but this is only true for journeys above your car's range. I AVG 4.5m/kWh in mine so 288 miles range - rarely drive anywhere near that far in one go.
      In fact looking at the avg driver that's true for the vast majority of people.
      But anyway don't get one if you don't want one. I've never queued at a rapid charger though. most of the time they look deserted to be honest when I drive past them.
      Ped is quite unusual in his habits driving cross country many times more than the avg person and a bit of a niche, hence him rapid charging and often at peak times. Which for the avg Joe blogs isn't going to be an issue really.
      IE don't plan on getting to a services on Xmas eve at lunchtime ! = Daft.

Not because of long journeys as most of the time I would only be traveling 13/14 miles a day for work. It’s more I would only like to charge as often as I fill up which on avg is approximately every 2 weeks. My longest single journey would be to the Lakes a few times a year which is approximately 150 miles each way for me.

      ​@@deanwhiteley3065it's a new mindset with an EV, and in reality the cheapest way to charge is at home by far. Typically people get a tarrif like octopus Go with 4 hours cheaper rates. In that four hours your charger can deliver 28-30kwh of juice that could send you 84 to 140 miles depending on the car's efficiency / weather.
      Some can rapid charge in 15mins instead of a petrol 2-5 or whatever but most are 25 to 40 mins. Worse in winter. You don't really want that experience regularly for commuting. our cars tend to be unused 90% of the time parked, that's when you want to be charging it. At home on a drive, on a lampost or nearby car park with a plug/ work car park. Supermarket rapid while you shop isn't a bad call though.

      Don't be put off! Noone ever goes back. It's not as bad as he paints it provided you're prepared to plan a bit and check live charger status. Avoiding sites with only a couple of chargers as far as possible is a good start!

      @@deanwhiteley3065 Dean, you'll probably be interested to know that a programme of charger installations is underway in Cumbria. Around 900 are going in, on top of the existing chargers. Tebay on the M6 now has 9 chargers by the way....and Shap village - just off junction 39 of the M6, has 2 in the main village car park, adjacent to the toilet block. These are operated by Charge My Street, which accepts various apps, such as Fuuse, All Star etc....

    It's tricky with efficiency as there are so many factors, in particular the season/temperature, however, I would consider 3m/kWh a relatively low bar. Many cars cannot achieve it but I think we should now be expecting a year round average of 4m/kWh. p.s. I think on Zap-Map you can very easily filter for charging speed so you only see those, for example, of 50kW or above.

    Hello Peter. So a car with lots of good bits but a few failures…not sold on the front and hate the big gap between the front seats…it is not a car I would buy for myself. Charging…today I was back at Exeter Services and they are expanding the charging bay numbers rapidly BUT still the queues and musical chair dance…it is getting better but I’m not buying a pure EV just yet! happy Motoring!!     I have a few issues with this car. 1) the armrest is unnecessary large and barely provides any space 2) my foot that's resting doesn't have a comfortable place to sit in the car 3) should have increased the boot space just a little bit since there's a huge amount of leg space at the back seats.

    It is amusing that people have range anxiety with 10% left in the tank, would they worry the same in a petrol car? Going to Silverstone, try the chargers at Cherwell (8) , or Banbury. (40?) A problem I have found with Zap Map is that very often a charger is shown as defective when the problem is with operator error. Several times I have ignored a reported fault and charged anyway.

    Hi. Just watched your video, we have a nissan leaf and when we bought it our nissan dealer said if your ever desperate for charging we can go to them and charge for free. Not sure if all Nissan dealers do the same. Seems a nice thing to offer

      My local Nissan dealer used to have a 50kw charger permanently available for free 24/7 that anyone could use. It was great. They still offer a free charge I think but only when they are open and you have to go in and ask for staff to unlock it. Kinda took the shine of it.

    A Shell station in Salisbury, now revamped. I was surprised to see only 4 charging bays. It’s a very big site. I hope the Stelantis experiment with engines going back to 2014 (I think), works, and synthetic petrol is able to power older cars. I think, 50% EV, 50% synthetic fuel ICE, is the way forward, and I think, after 6 months building, Shell might too 😂

      The infrastructure costs off BEVs is not sustainable at current levels. I think we’ll see blended fuels at the pump % E/ bio and % fossil fuel. I can see us getting to 2035 and switching to a carbon neutral fuel. F1 run synthetic petrol it, Indy car bio ethanol, nascar bio ethanol, Porsche cup racing rubs e fuel, WRC run it and Goodwood will be running on EFuel next year and I can buy it for £6 a litre in a drum for my 2stroke bikes.

      E fuels and biofuels are BS. very energy intensive to make. Biofuels for example if I planted an acre of corn to make Ethanol or bio diesel, I'll make enough in a year for 10k miles. If I planted it with solar panels I'd make a million miles in an EV.

      It's still relatively early days. Shell in Norway are actively replacing fuel pumps on their forecourts there with EV chargers, because of lack of use. Forget synthetic fuel. They will never be able to get the cost down to anywhere near the price of unleaded. Think 3 to 4 times the cost, and you'll be closer. Aspen synthetic petrol, which has been sold in Britain for decades, costs around £30 per gallon.... Shell have already stated their intention to cut the production of petrol and diesel by 40% on the lead up to 2030. The details were in their last business report....... Shell were one of the organisations who lobbied the UK government to bring *forward* the ban on the sale of new ICE cars and vans to 2030, from 2035.....The National Grid were another.....

Very interesting the Norway forecourts going the other way towards chargers. what a changing world we have. The strange part for me with EV charging stations, is you really need a restaurant there, and perhaps even gym facilities. Things to do, while your vehicle takes x time to charge…

    I really like the Ariya. Drove one the other week and was very impressed. Still prefer my ioniq 5 though. I charge out and about quite regularly and charger reliability isn't getting any better and as you say there just aren't enough of them to meet demand.

    If you ever need to charge near Silverstone again, I can recommend the Paisley Pear in Brackley. It’s probably the best place near Silverstone. It’s rather poor that there is no chargers at a place like Silverstone I think.

    The bigger battery Ariya has 80kWh to zero on the display (with a little more below zero) so 3.5m/kWh should be getting you 280 on a full charge.

    Hi, great video. I have a 2 year old Kie E-Niro 4+ and today doing a 100 mile journey at 11*c it averaged 4.7 mpKw back in the summer the average was 5 and slightly over. Full state of charge is 335miles and I've done 285 miles on a single charge and had 10% left ( A & B roads). What happened to the wait for the dedicated ev's to arrive and they'll have much better range and efficiency? It doesn't seemed to of happened. A brand new dedicated Ev released in 2023 surely should be doing better than this. My Niro is now an old design. I don't know how the Koreans have got it so right with they're range and efficiency and why the others haven't caught up. Good review as always.

    Can you tell me what the lead time was on this car please. I ordered on Sunday 28th May. Lead time told 6-9 months. I've read that Nissan are having manufacturing issues. I don't want to be waiting 12 months for the car to arrive.

    If that's not the long range version then the battery is 63kw. The long range is 87kw.

    I have yet to see an Ariya on the road here in France, then again the pricing of it at around €50,000 is ridiculous, especially when the Tesla Model Y, a bigger and arguably more capable car is €46K. What amazes me though Ped is the troubles you seem to have with public charging. My experience on trips to the UK has been...OK..not as good as France but I've never turned up to charge and found them all busy. Check out 'James and Kate on EVs'...James has done 70,000 miles in 18 months all over the UK as an EV service engineer and he says he's never had to wait to charge either. The fact is that there is no excuse at all now for not going cold turkey on the toxic oily stuff and going EV...apart from the ridiculous prices of course. 🙂

    When i was a kid 0-60 in 8 secs was a proper GTi. Now it's i-wouldn't-buy-that slow. It's sort of crazy that people are starting to genuinely believe that a family car has to come with 300HP minimum. I run my Model 3 in Chill mode 95% of the time, and it's still plenty fast to make rapid progress on any road. The full 400HP just makes passengers feel nauseous.
    The UK charging network is an embarrassment. Sadly typical unconnected planning and policy-making from the UK gov. It's not as bad as france, i can tell you from personal experience. But that's hardly a glowing recommendation.

    What sort of lead foot do you have 😮. I have had an Audi Q4 for almost 2 years. Our long term average is 3.4 miles per kwh. Thats local use driving to the speed limit and motorway runs of 150 miles twice every 6 weeks or so !

    Your EV charging problems are typical of those reported by people with limited experience. There is a saying that if you fail to prepare you must prepare to fail..
    Preparing means having alternatives, not relying on busy locations at meal times with only two chargers for example. If you find yourself at a busy location you must get out of the car and ask who is in the queue and “book” your space. I only stop at places with multiple chargers and I try to avoid charging at busy times. The number of chargers is going up but also is the number of EV’s so I don’t see the situation changing any time soon. I have owned an EV for over 3 years and won’t go back to dinosaurs juice. The EV driving experience is far superior.

    Nice review, but at the end you did not elaborate on the quirks you discovered. Did the Ariya announce in advance an oncoming pothole? How did it know? I have never seen a car do that.

      That was Waze announcing the pothole. It uses other Waze users to enhance the info it gives you. If you see a pothole,police car, stopped car, flood, fog or even roadkill you can put that quickly into Waze and it will then become a alert for other users 👍

    Feel a little aggrieved by the comment on Audi efficiency. We have had our Q4 50 Quattro for 6 months, have completed 5k miles and regularly see efficiency at 3.5m/kWh. Before you ask - I don’t drive like a slouch. I bought a Quattro after all!

    Chargefinder app is good for planning routes. Never had to queue in my short experience of EVs
    Currently getting 360m in the gom in my 87kw Ariya. Never been below 300m on mine

    Designed when Carlos Ghosn (pronounced ‘gone’) was in charge, so it is affectionately known as the Ghosn Ariya (gonorrea).
