    Thanks for a helpful video Scott. I just replaced the failed belts on my TA-2056 following your video. I didn't have to take off the cover plate on the door to access the single screw for the spindle cover, though. I used a magnetized electrical screwdriver with a long shaft and it held the screw just fine to remove and replace it. Everything else was as you described it. Now I have a nice working tape deck again. Much appreciated.

    Thanks Scott for this tutorial. Repaired mine today with your help.
    I am the first owner of my TA2058, bought it june 11th, 1987. It had been stored for over 5 years after moving and would not run anymore last week. Up on receiving my 2 replacing belts yesterday (for just under 10 euros) I wondered where the smaller one was hidden. Opened my TA2058 but I never found it. It had completely desintegrated and had altered to a sticky mess moulded around the spindle under the bigger wheel. I couldn't remove the wheel so I spent just over an hour to clean it with al kinds of household tools, picks and small pieces of cloth. But I succeeded.
    The large belt was the easy part. Though I did cut 3 wiring clips, leaving me more space to work with the screwdriver and removing the 3 screws.
    It was necessary to clean the flywheel and the pully because this belt was also becoming sticky.
    Thanks again my TA2058 runs like new.
    Greetings from the Netherlands.

      Very happy to read you were able to bring your machine back to life. It can be very frustrating working in a confined space like that, spraying cleaner on different parts. I wish I still had some of my old stereo equipment from when I was teenager. Cheers!

    Mechanisms and belts match the TA-2600. In my case, the deck had been idle for at least 15 years so I purchased the belt kit before plugging it in. This was fortunate since I found that the original belts were black goo. The capstan drum was very hard to clean as once the goo was removed using a solvent (carburetor cleaner), there was hard residue on the drum that had to be scraped off. I then polished it using a Dremel polishing bit. The front belt goo was less accessible, but I was able to clean the pulleys using pieces of string soaked in alcohol until they no longer turned black. This deck is now operational and will be used to digitize old tapes I have and then I will probably sell it.

    I have a TA 2500, which looks the same on the inside. I wanted to take the whole tape mechanism out but I quickly realized I would have to take the whole deck apart to get to it. Then I looked around until I found your video.

I bring you bad news, for this glorious brand, which made hifi history, these days, Sharp, who recently acquired the brand, announced that the debt is incurable. The electronic audio equipment company Onkyo has filed for bankruptcy, after accumulating debts of US$24 million. Onkyo, founded in Osaka in 1946 under the name "Osaka Denky Onkyo K.K", has failed to position its mainly analog equipment in the streaming era, consequently Onkyo has been declared bankrupt by the Onkyo company. Even if the electronics produced today had nothing to do with the wonderful electronics that it has... A big greeting from Barcelona, Spain,

    Hi Scott, I am so lucky to have found your tutorial, the best in CZcams... I have owned my TA-2058 probably since 1987/88 and couldn't be happier. It stopped working a few months ago, FF and RWD work but not PLAY. The larger belt in the back definitely needs to be replaced, no tension left at all. While I was looking at that, I noticed that when the power is ON and I press PLAY, the capstan motor (marked as SHE2L) doesn't rotate at all so I am planning to replace the belts and the capstan. Would you happen to know if the motor should be rotating only in PLAY mode? Will be good to know before ordering the belts and the capstan. Your feedback will be most appreciated! Best regards and thanks for posting this tutorial.

      @@scotthornberg4807 Hi There, I have the TA-2058, the motor will not turn when there is no tape in the well. When the system detects a tape, the motor will start turning. Also, when you close the door, the motor will spin for few turns as well even when no tape is in the well.

    • @scotthornberg4807

    • @kphickman
      @kphickman Před 3 lety +1

      The motor will only turn when there is a tape in the well pressing against a microswitch at the top in the middle. You can press this with you finger to actuate the switch, so the play button will function. If the motor won't turn while there is a cassette inserted, it could be a number of different things. If the light on the play button is flashing quickly, the head block is not engaging.

    It’s the second belt that is the capstan belt, correct? I found one of these decks but it will not play tapes. When I push the play button, for about half of a second begins to act like it is going to play the tape normally, but then it stops. I read a post elsewhere from someone who had the same problem, and said replacing the capstan belt fixed the problem. I have two belts coming to me in the mail, and I’m wondering whether I really need to put on both.

      A warning to anyone changing the larger belt: The plastic post that receives the lower left screw that helps hold the plate in place can break off from where the other end of the post is attached. Mine did. I don’t know how. I only noticed it when securing the plate after the new belt was on.
      The good news is the deck operates even without that lower left screw tightened against the plate.
      Thanks again, Scott!

      By the way my deck is a TA-2056 (won’t record without horrible distortion, sadly, and I’ve read the repair is tedious and tricky involving the pre-set level pots). I happened to pick up a TA-2048 tonight that appears to have the same belt system. Powers up, but no play/FF/REW; just silence when those buttons are pressed.

    • @kphickman
      @kphickman Před 3 lety

      Make sure the belt is not riding on the lip of the hub. That will speed it up enough to sound like chipmunks. If that's not the case, you can adjust the speed via a small hole on the back of the motor. There are various methods for doing this, from using a speed cassette, that can be purchased for $10-$30 on ebay, or by ear, using a tape copy and a CD copy and syncing they playback.
