- Since i'm maintaining my hi-fi system, I might as well sort out my Onkyo TA-2060 3 head direct drive tape deck. Since it had some issues with wow and flutter when recording. In this episode I figure out how to replace the belts and so some recording tests.

FINALLY someone who makes a watchable video. So many posters are idiots, endless jump cut shit. This is easy on the brain and ears.
Direct dive refers to the capstan motor. The important bit.
It's refreshing to see a woman who is interested in old tech
Refreshing u say! It is sooooooo rare. She is diamond.
You did convince me. I was dead wrong throwing those cassettes away! So this time, I had an original movie on VHS. Same problem. So I opened it up (you’re kind of inspiring), peeled the tape out, fast forwarded and rewinded the tape 6 times and it played fine again. You live to learn! And I really like the That’s tape you’re using! I think they’re some of the best type II tapes out there!
Glad that you got señor Onkyo going again. The little truck gave me a smile.
Nice deck! Also nice tapes! I just replaced the belt on my Onkyo TA-2600. So happy to have it working properly again!
That Onkyo is amazing! The recording is superb! LOL @ little truck again!
Señor Onkyo blasting out Turrican remixes. 😊
Great performance from this Onkyo 3 head machine. I should really use my high end Technics 3 head deck more often!
Another gem from the golden era of audio technology, recording was great, even if there will be any difference between the audio of the source and the tape, it was'nt hearable.
I couldn't imagine changing belts with those nails😂 great video!
Lol! Kinda makes it easier in a way. And thanks!
This is an amazing cassette deck. You were lucky to find it. I remember when you recapped it. I have a similar equipment from 1981, a JVC DD-7 direct drive. You may rest assured that yours is direct drive, even though there might be some gears playing around. Direct-Drive and 3 heads is just great as you proved. I suspect that at 4m05s the upper wheel contains a spinning magnet and, next to it, a hall effect semiconductor to sense whether it is spinning or not to protect the mechanism and the tape in case something gets stuck. And the other belt is for the tape counter. I find this hall sensor a great and simple idea for the era. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor
This was really enjoyable and relaxing. I loved the interesting camerawork in parts and the little interludes with the tiny delivery lorry. Chrome tapes can be very good indeed, it reminds me of S-Video vs RGB, and the jump each of them have from composite (which is ferric tape in this example I suppose). A few years ago I realised all the mix tapes from records my dad had made were on TDK Chromes, which might explain why I never noticed the things people disparage tapes as in my own usage, I never really experienced Ferric tape much. Never got new albums on tape, it was always dubs from records (or for new releases CDs), so always onto those Chromes.
Kit Vitae oh, but there are some fabulously good type I ferro cassettes out there! But what I was using was the really cheap crappy stuff in a simple Philips boombox. No wonder it sounded crap! And if you can’t calibrate your tapes, if the bias of your tape is very different than what your deck was set up for (Japanese decks seem to usually be set up for TDK D (ferro) and SA (chrome), it could easily sound dull. Unfortunately, it took me a long time to figure that out 😂
Hello! Your actions and knowledge say a lot! You have a good qualification of a specialist! But the most important thing is that you like it all.
Thanks - you’re video was adorable - I have a very mint 2050 and I was going to give it to a friend but now I’m going to love it forever more ! Cheers !thanks for the inspiration
All old machines leave that belt 'shadow' every one. Edit - none of those belts affect wow and flutter. Only the capstan and pinch wheel.
Those mini arcade machines look amazing, If only they were half the size then they'd be perfect for my 28mm miniature gaming.
Another quality repair job. Kudos. Never even knew 3 head tape decks were a thing, good stuff.
Nice Turrican remix
I didn't know either until I got a 3 head deck with manual calibration from a friend a few years ago - it's so amazing.
I wish I would have known about 3 head decks in the 90's and bought one when cassettes were all i had for recording and listening to music on the go.
Great video. Just discovered your channel. I am surprised the wow and flutter was solved by replacing the belt. Back in the day I found that cleaning the pinch roll and capstan resolved the issue. The cassette deck must have been a service engineers nightmare (such a messy design).
What a beautiful tape deck
Really nice player and demo of a belt change. Might try and get one of these cassette decks. Mine is an old AiwaAD-F460, nice, but not as nice as that! Subscribed!
You are brave :-) I am quite bad at tricky mechanical things, I think. At least, they make me sweat. I always believe that those contraptions are full of springs under tension, that jump into my face, when I open the case :-) Some months ago, I made a solder fume thing from a fan, too. It is a great thing. I was soldering over 40 years without. But with, soldering has never smelled better :-)
Very helpful. My Onkyo cassette stopped running after a long period of inactivity. Let’s see if this helps. Thank you for your kind help.
2:36 - That was a great touch there. haha.
Beautiful deck. I still keep my Nikko Deck ND-590, also a really good one. This reminds me recording from Amiga's Aegis Sonic and ultimate soundtracker to tape.
Good time today's nothing good like this dijtial electronics destroy such long life things
I 'freakin' enjoyed this video. Subbed!
Rodant Kapoor about 25 times in one video, tired of that Word Already

Great vid keep up the good work
Very nice looking Onkyo deck. Would have been a decent one back in the day. I’d like to get my Yamaha deck out one day and play around with it, I just don’t have the room atm. Though I have decent quality tapes, they haven’t been stored properly, and so I’d say they’d be no good now. Unfortunately these days, buying new/old tapes are expensive, because they are no longer being made by the main manufacturers, TDK, Sony, Maxell, BASF ect. Would love to get my hands on some brand new TDK SA-X tapes from the mid to late 80’s, they were the best sounding tapes to me! 🙂
love you ms mad lemon 😘
que grande tomando mate, buenissimo
The old is gold. Nice deck cassette.
Hi, the small pulley with the sensor is often the autostop, ie when it stops, the mechanism disengages. May also work the counter if it is a digital type. Great video, by the way, nice presentation.
Another Nice Video from You⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
*It is freaking surprising* to see you in this profession!😁😁😁
One summer I managed to pick up three late eighties (black plastic/loads of VFD displays and LEDs) Dolby HX-Pro twin tape decks and only one works properly so I plan to restore the other two (Kenwood, Dennon and another higher end brand) to load games into my ZX81 lol
Beautiful Vintage. Parabéns
Me gusta ! principalmente cuando el mate esta en todos lados, gracias.
Just bought ONKYO TA2025 I'm so excited today ..... the package will arrive in few days.....the maintenance of my model would not be very different than 2060 thanks in advance madam.....
My pleasure, If it's very similar to this one, you're in for a treat, enjoy it :o)
@@MsMadLemon 🥰
@@MsMadLemonUnlike 2060 mine had just 2 belts one for flywheel one for tape counter, Had to change the flywheel belt and i replaced with more thicker and wider belt with same length. Now almost 2 year passed and still running super tactile. Only issue it doesn't like some of my old dusty cassettes but I know how to refreshen them.
It's cheaper and only does playback and recording, no calibration and bias etc. But i like it for it's simplicity.😊😊😊

Oh yes !! The That's VX90 !
Great cassette !
Lovely & interesting video
Very good my friend.
I got an old reel to reel deck with an analog counter. What do I need to make a digital counter for it ?
Youre partially correct. It's a chrome position cassette but it uses metal particles. There are pure chrome, cobalt doped chrome and metal particle chrome. Great your videos!
Nice Video! Capstan Shaft must be direct driven...
Have you tried the universal cassette Bluetooth is for all cassette player it turn your cassette player like into a bluetooth speaker works great
I have so many decks with belts that need to be replaced.....but it is such a pain in a lot of them.
Also I am jealous of your metal cassettes =P I have yet to record on metal yet though I have many decks that can handle them.
THAT'S cassettes are actually one of the best cassette brands ever made. The VX is one of the best Type II's ever made imo. Even their budget RX Type I is amazing. The SUONO metal is a legendary cassette like the Sony Metal Master and MA-XG.
Taiyo Yuden was behind That's. And they always delivered.
Yes those That's tapes were amazing. Love even the design. But i don't have many of them. 1or 2 actually. They were a little bit more expensive, but 1st of all pretty more RARE. The most 1s i used have been Maxell, TDK, BASF a. Sony CrO2 or higher. NeVeR Normal ones...
Huzzah! A woman of quality!
Nice cassette deck! I wonder if the direct drive thing is referring to the capstan, presumably that is directly driven by the motor and that's what actually feeds the tape in conjunction with the pinch roller?
My teac deck just decided to stop working on me recently :( Going to have to work out what is wrong with it
Love it!!😊😊😊
Pls tell me i have same model how to make Sharp play and recording good
Every time i see a new video of Maddi appearing i get a little smile at my face. Thanks for all the videos. Keep up the good work.
It looks like one belt is for the tape counter, maybe the other is for back-tension. My Technics RS-BX606 is getting a bit hungry for tapes, and it has expensive taste, Type II's and IV's. I may have to dig into it to check the back-tension.
Nice freakin vid! Can't even get my wife to listen to my system let alone explain how/why things work or don't sometimes 🙂
Like aleady told from others: These 2 belts are for tape counter and hall sensor (control tape working / tape travel and autostop) and do not have usual any effect with WoF (wow & flutter). In exceptional cases only if one uses the wrong (too narrow) belts which then stretch too tight. The tape drive is easy to take out: 4 screws (2 top/2 bottom). For better WoF you should change the idler (wheel) gummi against a new one, or in minimum clean it with isopropanol alcohol (using tips), also some sand paper (1000 or more) could help if surface of idler gummi has not enough grip (gummi did harden some what). Likewise, the two discs (pinch rollers) which drives the idler wheel respectively (for fast forward, rewind and play) also clean with alcohol and tips. Additional the direct drive motor and capstan (with capstan axis) should taken out, cleaned and new lubricated (using sintered bearings oil or motor oil if not available, and some titan or graphite grease). Take care to not loose the transparent oil disc on the capstan axis (on pinch roller side, prevents that pinch roller gets oily from oil that comes out over time from the slide bearing). After this, when resampled the speed should adjusted (see manual, using DVM with frequency count function or frequency counter and speed test cassette 3kHz). Also cleaning capstan axis on the pinch roller and the pinch roller intensivly (alcohol or special rubber wheel cleaner + tips). Also when replacing belt always clean the guides / rolls also where theses belt "drives". This is best done by a piece of (white) thicker cotton wool which is soaked with isopropanol and which is repeatedly pulled through the guide rollers. Only after this then install new belts. This is even more needed for (capstan) "belt driven" tapes (absolute majority of tape decks). The "non-soft eject problem" usually comes from a worn o-ring in the damping element for the cassette compartment. This is difficult to repair and often hopeless and frustrating piece of repair. You can make a new o-ring (you often have to cut a new one some thinner with a razor blade) or brush the element with slightly viscous grease or silicon with extremely high viscosity. Often, a set screw on the back of the damping element which you can adjust something but often helps little. The TA-2060 is a very nice and good sounding vintage tape deck which won many comparative tests in the mid-1980s. I have one myself and and completely restored it.
I also mentioned it in the video towards the end that the belts dont affect the wow and flutter but somehow it disappeared, it was only subtle.
AH! I love Amiga music so much! T^T
Love Your videos and your. laughter.🤣👍🏼. I got 2 cassette recorders that are 3 Heads . Nakamichi BX-300. And a Sony Tc-K561s with DolbyS
Hi I'mhaveing a problem with an a-22 Onkyo, the cassette gears seem stuck, The motor wont turn, i hear a clicking noise. i checked the belts to the motor they seem okay.. i do get e tick tick noise, I'm stumped ?? any ideas would be greatly appreicated,, as i've never owned one of these before.. but i have the repaire manual with the schematic..
I never seen a woman interested in old tech. Ur hands are so beautiful
@@ebarbie5016 That's an interesting reply...i'm trying to figure out what your reply about my background has to do with what Bryan commented ;o)
@@ebarbie5016 In Iran and most Arab countries western music is prohibited, so no hifi components, especially not for women.:) So she have to be an American or British girl with maybe persian or arab roots. But this doesn`t matter.
Actually, western music is not prohibited in those countries lol not sure where you heard this but there are a lot of Arabs who listen to it. If Amiga and commodore computers were so popular in places like Iran, Iraq, Syria and Egypt etc then it's not uncommon to see tech like this. I know someone from Lebanon who is into vintage audio electronics in a big way and listens to western music as well as Arabic.
I'm Arab myself btw living in the UK, I speak Arabic and Spanish... But yeah, I agree, it should not make a difference nor matter to anyone what I am or where i'm from.
Also Peter I think your information about Arab countries and Iran is severely outdated, by a century or so lol

I love Yerba mate!
I bought a Sony tc-k555esL imported from Japan but stopped playing the belt is good I think it’s probably the direct drive system maybe it need something what do you think it can be
Thanks by the great recordings 👍
Yay hifi vids again
That little transporter truck :D cute.
Fun vid!
What belts did you end up getting? Did you get the kit off ebay? Thanks.
Does anyone know the particular sizes of belts used here? Just picked one up and want to refurbish it.
Hi there beutygal!! Me got a ADF-770, so called "nakakiller" or poormans naka. Of course, its an AIWA. From 83 to 86-era. It got adms-system and DATA. Do you have any feels about those modells?? I have not recapped mine yet. Caps seems fine,no any leaking. Is it good to recap my aiwa?
Nice :) The audio quality from the cassette is awesome. Have you tried recording games on cassettes? even with modern solutions, I love the games on cassettes :) I wouldn't use cassettes all the time, but every now and then.
Yet another direct drive but with some belt somewhere. Is there a direct drive deck without any belt and without rubber idler?
What's the belt-width for this deck? A "full set" of 2 belts especially for the TA-2060 costs 14€ and I do not want to pay that much for 2 belts only which I may buy in a bulk vor way less. Also: Are the pinch rollers on all cassett decks the same?
The FLYWHEEL is direct drive...they make it sound like the capstan is direct drive right????
The idler wheel is the one that needs replacing...or a good clean with isopropyl.
able to tell where to get those belts?
Amiga music and Mate! great! nice video.
3 head direct drive with 2 belts :-) Nice repair, very serviceable deck.
The capstan (which is solely responsible for the speed of the tape) is what’s directly driven. The spool motor can be belt driven, since it has no impact on sound quality. (The other belt goes to the counter.) I suspect the wow and flutter is from the pinch roller, as others have commented.
Maddi,
Thanks for showing how to set the bias. I've never knew how to set it manually.
Is HX a way of adding headroom to your recording? If that's true, shouldn't it be left on whenever you record?
My pleasure :o)
And yes Indeed HX should be left on when you record, but there's no need to have it turned on, on playback, unlike Dolby B, C, S.
yes, HX (and HX Pro) is supposed to give you more headroom by keeping a balance between the bias level and the high frequencies present in the audio itself (wich on their own act as a bias of sorts)
in short: HX is adjusting bias dynamically depending on the audio signal
actually, this is the first deck I see that has a switch for HX.
all the "HX Pro" decks i've seen do not have a switch for it so I assume it's enabled all the time.
@@MsMadLemon Thank you for the quick reply and helping me to add to my knowledge. That's what I kinda thought, but I wasn't positive. Now, I am. :-)
THOMMGB Yeah, I have no idea why one would want to record without HX. Since it isn’t an encoding (like Dolby NR or dbx), it doesn’t need a decoder and is playable on all players, so there’s no reason to not use it.
Does Dolby HX pro really make much of a difference?
Le musiche di turrican dove le hai trovate?,chi le ha suonate?,non sono le originali dei giochi
I would suggest replacing the drive wheel and clean its contact surfaces as well.
eita eita, dona limao!!!! Que video maravilhoso. Porque as outras mulheres nao se interessam por eletronica? A senhora é uma raridade, dona limao! Desejo sucesso!
Thanks so much - I’m keeping my 2050 forever now - very inspiring- also the video is very cute and is damn near accidental same 😜
Hello! I could not focus on/to the machine because of your beautiful crimson nails 😉
You need to clean the capstan shaft and pinch roller. They determine the wow and flutter. Ideally replace the pinch roller as they get hard with age.
Very amazing very nice 👍
You are the master
I am impressed by the TA2060, and of course your dextrous manners in that and all. But you didn't seem to replace the idler rubber 8ncluded in your kit, did you
Thanks. Ah you mean the pinch roller? (the only ohter thing in the kit) no I didn't, there was no need really, so I kept it as a spare for future
6:43 looks like that belt is up against the metalwork but it was like that on the old belt too. looks like that brown might belt dust rubbing off.
The only other explanation I can think of is that one of it's past owners was a heavy cigarette smoker, it reminded me of yellowed smoke stains.
@@MsMadLemon Give it a taste, that'll tell you! :)
@@preferredimage eeeeee *shudders* ... i'll pass, I don't need to know that badly lol

Well done on fixing your cassette deck! :o)
Yes, sometimes service manuals can be useless! :o(
In general: I wonder, would it sometimes be a good idea to photograph the fixing process in stages if there is a lot of disassembly going on? This is something I do when matters get complicated.
I did notice that the deck is a single capstan machine - nothing wrong with that, some high-end machines employ a dual capstan system with one 'trailing' capstan (on the left) running at slightly a slower speed. This helps the tape transport system maintain a smoother and more reliable tape transport - well, that's the theory anyway! :D
Thumbs up - a great video, I really enjoyed it. Many thanks Ms M.Lemon.
I recommend photographing too when disassembling anythign complex, thought since i'm personally already videoing it, there's no need :o)
Yes this is a single capstan machine, the dual capstan is for the auto reverse feature.
@@MsMadLemon A dual capstan system is used for an auto-reverse deck like my old AKAI GXC-75D, but my Revox B215, Nakamichi DR10, Sony TC-KA7ES, and Teac V8030S are all dual capstan and are only one-direction machines. If they are properly aligned, we can play cassette tapes with the pressure pad taken *out*.
Lovely to see someone enjoying their retro HiFi!
Regards and thanks for the feedback! :o)
It is important to oil the moving parts before re assembliing
Hi has anyone had problems with the Onkyo ta-2056 ?Thanks..
The low tones are for Dolby calibration / recording sensitivity . I don't know any deck that uses lower tones to adjust the bias , if the owners manual doesn't comment on this it's probably what Accu Bias is all about
12:50 who did that Turrican remix?
The belt you changed was for the tension on the left spool towards the heads while playing or recording. It's called back-tension . If it would't have no tension at all, you'd see the left tape half wobbling around which is awfull to look at .
Hey Ms Mad Lemon. Did you make sure to let the leader tape go by before starting your recording? :)
Yes, as you heard it directly from the tape at the same time as it was recording...Since it's a 3 head tape deck :o)
@@MsMadLemon Thank you Ms Mad Lemon. :)
