You will just work a row of sc into your chains or a row of fsc. Row two and beyond is worked like this, as the waistcoat stitch, split sc, etc (several names for it). You work between the legs or bars at the base of the stitch. You don't work around them like with a post stitch but, as shown here, between the two legs.
i saw a video once of someone showing this stitch and her hand covered the hook as she was going into the stitch so thank you for showing it so clearly!

Agreed…I have tried this waistcoat stitch in flat rows, and it doesn’t look like this :-). I’m wondering how she’s getting her rows in the body of the bag, to look so consistent to a Tunisian stocking knit stitch. No matter how I try..it’s not looking like this 😂 Any ideas?

I made a beautiful wool sweater using this stitch which is sometimes called a center single crochet. If you use this stitch try using a busy hand died yarn it comes out so amazing.

LOL That almost looks like a tulip hook but the handle looks a bit dark. Keeping a loose tension is everything for this stitch.
I had to keep my nails short in order to type. Now that I'm retired, I don't have the patience or money to fool with glamour nails. Guess it's a personal preference.

I may try this and use lots of beautiful colors, or get a variegated yarn. You could keep the "fringe" you'll have on the sides or do a double layered border.

Am I pulling up loops wrong? I tend to yarn over when pulling up loops through stitches, but this is the second tutorial I’ve seen of someone yarning under.
