Bought one in April off this nice old man. £2000, 145,000 miles. - been my daily driver ever since, not given me one bit of pain - it's a faultless beast. Rusty as hell though. Will need to find a welder before my next MOT.

Thought the same, he is pretty good at this dispute his clear younger age. However, he left out 200485 problems thst occure lol these are unreliable cars. I have one I know lol

Wasn't entirely prepared for a hefty does of nostalgic feelings from this, but there you go. Had one as the family car for a few years when I was a kid, and watching this dredged up some nice memories of it that I'd forgotten.
Such as the odd occasion of being designated into one of the boot seats whenever we had family or friends with us :P

I’ve had 4 D2s , then a D4 , hated it then got a re- chassised 2000 D2 , life is good again with no worry’s of horrendous repair bills
It´s amazing to me that many very young people are discovering... old Discoverys and Range Rovers and pricing (and using!) them for what they are, instead of buying them to show-off, as paradoxically happend with many buyers back in the day 15, 20 or 25 years ago, when these things and D-1 where brand-new... I think this vehicles are going to be much more appreciated in the future, as the same way that´s been happening with RRC for a while...
I am an American who works with an NGO in Rural Romania. The NGO has a 2002 Rover and they do legit off road work it in the Carpathian mountains. It's an extraordinary piece of machinery and the most rugged car I have ever driven

Yet another great video, Ed. Thank you. My best pal loves these, even though his is in the garage most of the time, because it is the most unreliable beast in the world. It’s a shame you weren’t able to get into the back seat. Probably the most difficult four-door car to get in and out of.
I have a 2000 Disco 2 and I love it. It has it's quirks, like any vehicle, but at the end of the day it truly is all you ever need.
Enjoyed your vid on the well used 90. If you want to do one on mine at some point feel free. I’m in Sussex, and the motors a 1961 lwb series two with a 200 tdi and roamerdrive. I use it everyday , drive it because I enjoy it and it’ll carry anything and be a camper as well and it’s tidy and a good balance between originality and user friendliness. I love the Discovery 2 it’s one of my favourite Land Rovers of all time I both love the Pre-Facelift and Facelift Models, I’ve always thought of them very well some are the same age as me in 2001, it’s one of my favourite Land Rovers beside the Discovery 3 & 4, my favourite Range Rover the L322 my Uncle had the 2010 facelift one and that’s my Favourite Land Rover of all time beside the Disco 2, he had the 3.8 V8 2010 (59) Top Spec Model, the P38 Range Rover, the Defender and Others. My Grandad had a Silver 1991 (J) Silver Land Rover Discovery 1 for a long time, he had it when I was born until about 2007 I think, it came from a farm from the top of Scotland and was rotten at the end, but someone bought it as it was stuck for sale on a road hill and someone exported it to India I think. My Uncle had a 1993 (L) Green Land Rover Discovery 1 for a long time I mean possibly 15/16 years, but that went in the end rotten too. But the Disco 2 is my favourite and I agree with you, seeing so many components it shares with Rovers is so surprising. Shares my components with my 25, like the Radio that was original in my 25 (this Discovery 2 is the same age as my 25) actually called the C42 Cassette and I replaced it with the CD43 Rover Radio and CD Player and the Key with my 75.
Very interesting. Way back in 1992 a friend and I went on a 3,000 mile round trip drive to move someone from Toronto, Ontario to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The biggest thing that turned me off was the horrible, hard seats. By the time we were ⅔ of the way back home my legs were numb.
Personally I think that the Land Rover Discovery 4 was the last proper Discovery. It could be had with all the luxury features but could still used by a farmer to tow and act like a workhorse. I think that the Discovery 5 is now just a 7 seat Range Rover made to drive around Central London.
Twins I have a d2 in the same colour and shes called smurf I've just had the chassis done and now suspension arm ball joint and shes back on the road

Disco 2 is a very nice shape, I have one. But the old classic range rover was the best. A vogue se. Lovely.
I've got a disco 2 and I agree, the old style range rover still is the best looking LR for me
good video. I would love to know why the designers thought it was a good idea to put additional lights in the rear bumper, especially an off road vehicle.

Ah man wish i still had my Freelander 1, you'd have loved to have a poke around that! Right from the heart of the PAG, there's discretely Volvo switchgear, Visteon (Ford) Radio, Rover column stalks, and the famously infamous puuring k-series in 1.8 form. Miss that car.

@@neilsg2001 Mine didn't as it was a Facelift, but i have vague memories that the pre-facelift model did have something similar to interior marina handles.

There’s a old 2001 disco at my work that gets used round there daily but the turbos gone on it and it screams when it goes up a hill lol
Great review. I owned a 1993 Discovery 1 MPi which had the Rover M16 2 litre engine installed. They were not universally liked so relatively cheap to buy second hand. Mine was great - of course it lacked the lugging power of the TDi but it was smooth, quiet and very relaxed on the motorway and it would return 28 mpg so much less thirsty than a V8. I think I prefer the interior design of the early Discos but all of them are cool! :)

@@karimalameddine5092 I really liked my MPi Discovery, but I think they are pretty hard to come by now as they were never a great commercial success. I'm not sure whether they ever exported the MPi to Canada. Good luck with the search anyway :)

9:07 triangle of doom :D. I thought i was the only one that gets pissed off by this. Anyway its not that bad in the disco.
The reason they took away the Central Diff locking in D-2 (after been in D-1 for 10 years) has nothing to do with Range Rovers (most of the RR, except for the old ones, had an automatic locking device, by a viscous coupling), in fact D-2 has more and more equipment and refinement than the D-1. The thing is that many users don´t fully understand the way to use the Diff-Lock, because of the very nature of the term "Permanent 4WD" wich lead to confusion, despite the efforts that LR put into explain and show how to use it. Many people never engage the Diff-lock, because they think "this is permanent 4wd", and in the other hand many people abuse of it, locking in situations where wasn´t necessary, causing wind-up of the transmission and failures. So LR developed the Traction Control system, basically using the ABS unit. The problem was that LR trusted only in that system for the off-road performance, and even when the system work pretty well in every-day icey or muddy conditions at tar or gravel roads, in harsh real off-road conditions wasn´t fully satisfactory, especially at steep slopes. The funny thing is that in many early D-2 all the mechanisms in the transmission was put it in there!, but LR does not linked it with the command in cockpit... So now, you can buy a kit of the linkedge, and convert your D-2 in an extraordinary Off-road vehicle, with center Diff-lock and the traction control aids...
Best buy is the 2.0 TD5 115 SE avoided V8 Premuim.
The dash cluster is broken they aren’t all like that, doesn’t have locking diffs because Land Rover brought out transition control which is a better system than locking differentials.

Locking diff is fitted on 1999 to 2002 just not plumbed in it needs a cable which is £200
Brilliant car. Had 4 or 5 discos and all great. Currently got a 2015 D4 which is also great.
Fantastic love mine to bits 250000 miles but toooooooo much electronics, ignition switch latest cost 400 pounds have fitted isolator instead . I think handle well much better than other car 2006 lwb shogun ,,, sport ,,,,,

As long as it offers a manual stick shift transfer case and solid axles, I have no problem.

I fear the dash panel has been tinkered with and not reassembled properly. Mine is rock solid after 14 years of ownership. I have a fair list of parts that had to be replaced over the years, but the good news is that the car is easy to work on, and aftermarket spares are cheap and plentiful.

nice vid, just a note that this disco is a very basic model, the poor man's model. no climate control, no ace, no leather, no heated seats etc etc
I'm looking a getting one as I've always wanted one, and loved the one I drove on a 4x4 day. But I want one for going across Europe on a 10 countries camping rally. Up Swiss mountains and down french coasts. Would you recommend one and on average how much would you say a good one these days GENERALLY costs?
Emerald Zebra I’ve had one 2 years now, 21,000 miles. I’ve needed a wheel bearing and diesel pipe. Which is nothing. 32mpg on a run and comfortable as anything. I’d definitely recommend one.

@@MamodFan01 Wow you got a bargain then! I joined a group of owners and got nothing but complaints making it sound horrific. But I see literally 5 / 6 every time I go out. So they can't be that bad surely. And it's only getting 20 less mpg than my current car.

Are the discovery 2 especially 2004 really bad? I’m trying to buy one and everyone keeps telling me to avoid Land Rover I’m confused and not sure if I should go for it
Yeah go for it, don't believe what everyone tells you - make your own mind up, EVERY car has had 'gremlins' none are perfect. Just check as best you can if you do get a D2, the CHASSIS is NOT ROTTEN behind repair - you can usually check this up on MOT history via GOV.UK if the reg no. is available and check for any signs of the sunroofs leaking (if fitted), if the windows are fogged up it's usually a sign of water ingress in the interior. Manual cogboxes less trouble than Auto's imo (better MPG too) & if you can afford a later model ('51-'04) the better as Land Rover uprated the Td5 enignes (15p) with a stronger cylinder head. All the best.

Compared to what / where? ALL vehicles cost a second mortgage when taken to a garage. The advantage of the discovery 1 / 2 is repairs are well within the capabilities of anyone who has a box of spanners in the shed. As far as parts go, which are readily available for these 20 plus year old cars, is that as most are manufactured in china anyway, I would say they would be the same price anywhere.

On our second discovery 2....and trust me, they are not mechanically reliable!! Hard to think of something that hasn't needed fixing on this second one!!

I’ve owned plenty, our current one was purchased by my father new and now my wife drives it, it’s 20 years old and has traveled all over Europe and beyond, it’s even been up inside the artic circle and has given us great service, it’s not been without its faults, it’s a vehicle after all. But on the whole it’s been a fine vehicle and does every thing we want it to and more!
It gets cleaned and serviced when needed which is something a lot of them don’t get regularly, and a reason why some get landed with a dog unfortunately..

Many other things such as calipers, seals, intercooler, fuel lines, suspension bushes, leaking sunroof, locks don't work, drains the battery in an hour sometimes, hard to put diesel in it as it goes down the filler pipe really slowly, and it's just done 100k miles... I wish the bloody thing had been a figment of my imagination!!!!

To be honest Disco 2s are not build well but this particular one is a POS

I saw a nice one of these for sale a little while ago... The ring back folder the owner had of service receipts was very scary indeed - it was as thick as a phone book. My advice... Avoid!

Don't buy a D2 td5 unless you are fully aware of all the problems THEY WILL have... Do your research and expect heavy maintenance costs. They are an excellent truck when looked after well. And a shit cunt of a truck when not. I know from experience lol...also thst part towards 3/4ths of the vid, where he claims it will last forever 😂😭👍good one. I'm on my second engine at 108k miles so that's not true at all
My brothers d2 was a minter and expensive engine shit it self in a week brought a rotten £400 donor and it hasnt broke down since went to do oil change and oil was still gold

I’d thought that, but according to all the documentation it was manufactured and registered in 2002. Probably ‘03 model year in ‘02. That’s the way it normally is.
