I have two 32 oz Vaughn framing hammers. Best hammers I've ever owned. I will definitely have to get a hatchet by Vaughn. Thanks for the info. Thanks for sharing

Burn your handles with a propane torch and oil rub with Danish oil. Makes it stronger and last longer in the weather. Nice Job Blackie

Thanks Blackie.... I really like your idea. This will work great for my grandkids... I just can't afford 80-100 dollars on my retirement budget for a hatchet. Personally I use a WWII army surplus hatchet that I bought over 50 years ago for 50 cents. It is no longer painted green, the original canvas cover is now leather, I have gone thru a lot of handles, but it is still razor sharp and my favorite of all the small axes I have used over the years. I am a big fan of surplus and repurposed gear for woodcraft rather than designer gear. I guess that is because I was a poor hillbilly kid that grew with hunting and living in the woods as a way of life. If you did not hunt or forrage when I was a kid you did not eat. lol My grandma and grandpa would be laughing and shaking their heads at all the money people are spending on designer gear today. My grandpa and dad always said that it is not so much the tool, but it is important to know how to use the tools you have. The most expensive tool without the skill to use it is worthless. However, the cheapest tool in the hands of a skilled craftsman appears priceless....

Great minds think alike. I'm no wood carver but I have been thinking about getting a few task specific tools with a carving ax/hatchet being one of them so I can practice and work on learning this skill. I was thinking using a roofing hatchet but this thing has a wider blade and I bet will work really well. Oh and since it is a Wal-Mart item with the $20ish price tag next time I am in town I will pick one up.

Spitting. And can even skin a deer with a sharp hatchet Yes I do Carry a good quality fixed blade sheath knife around 5 inches And a folder Buck 112 ranger I also Carry a Pocket knife I prefer a two blade muskrat for detail work enough said God bless

My question is this,, you say your knife blade is so very sharp, which I definitely believe you I've bought a couple of sharpeners for my knives a couple of the Smith sharpeners, smaller ones the diamond rod & couple more which I'll include pictures of. I can't figure out what I'm doing Wrong.. I

Say Heah Blackie, I got lucky when I bought my ZT Zomstro, At the time I didn't realize it looked like a Japanese Hatchet with those Coping shape blades, We'll I use the Zomstro as a Japanese Hatchet and that's their version of the Carpenters Hatchet that they use similarly, Yeah, I could form out a Ladle with it.

Kelley True Temper made the Dynamic’ Tomahawk/DHF half hatchet with a more tomahawk sweep blade. They’re not common, but occasionally turn up on the Vintage market! Much better Quality in the old American Steel from 1975’ on back.
