- With gaming becoming more casual in the 2000s, especially on Nintendo’s Wii and DS systems, it lead to a lot of obscure games for children. With Nintendogs being among the best selling games of the generation, there became somewhat of an outburst in wacky pet simulation games, including absurd Nintendogs ripoffs, the huge Petz series, and many pet flash games and online games. Today on strawberry sprite, I'm taking a nostalgic look through the quirky world of pet games in the 2000s

We love the nostalgic niche weird 2000’s girly trend reviews! It gives a sense of closure since a lot of us were made fun of for simply being a kid and enjoying these things!
Probably why a lot of young girls feel pressured to act older now.. people put a lot of pressure on young girls and they’re literally just babies.

Crazy thing was I somehow DID figure it out. It was based on the microphone in the ds and you had to say the command in a certain tone and hope the dog could understand you. I had one dog that managed to make it to the freaking championship in obedience trials. Getting that dog to spin for 15 seconds non stop was a nightmare
Words cannot express how much I love these kinds of games. I especially loved the LPS ones (LPS Friends is my favorite of the trilogy as it’s story-based and has a lot of interactive things)!
yes!! I had one of the og LPS games (I think it was spring but I don’t remember) and I also had the LPS friends beach version and I preferred it sooo much more!! Almost teared up watching this video and remembering this stuff again :,)
Agreed, I liked having headcanons for all the friends characters and shipped some of the friends together. I also tried to get the toy versions of all the characters in all three versions that I played. I liked both friends and biggest stars because it gave the characters dialogue and gave them a heightened level of intelligence since they actually spoke. Although, my only criticism is that it was very heavy with puns for all the dialogue.
@@celestiachamberlain7029 same! I like that the characters can be more personalized and thus have ambiguous genders and such. But they each still have their own personality.

I’m happy that the LPS games are being remembered. I played every single version. The original one and the sequels and all their variants such as biggest stars and friends. Also, I played them recently as a 22 year old and even though LPS was my main obsession and I collected 200+ of the figures as a child, the games were definitely a product of their time, definitely made for children, but I still love it either way and I felt like I regressed in a happy way when I played them and I really love the LPS art style. LPS made me transition into being a pegasister and anime fan in the 2010s since the art style and vibe was similar enough. Also, I still recreate and get inspired by the LPS designs for my current OCs that I make and game characters that I make for the sims, Skyrim, fallout, and other games with character creation. I also made my favorite LPS in the pony maker flash game. As a child, I lived and breathed LPS and only consumed toys that looked like animals like mlp and webkinz. I consumed every single piece of media associated with LPS and became a true collector and the biggest fan that I’ve ever known irl. My mother locked away all my LPS toys and media when I was 12 and I felt like that was the day when my inner child died inside for many years. I constantly tried to fill in the void and once I played the littlest pet shop game again, I felt like I was 8 years old all over again, playing on my pink DS lite, all alone on my room.
you should check out Petz Catz 2 (there’s also a dog reskin version) ! it’s vastly different (and better imo) than the rest of the Petz games, and it’s so nostalgic for me with its low poly landscapes and whimsical storyline. that’s why i also loved the lps games for the ds and wii, as they’re more fantastical and silly than traditional pet games. even at 21 years old i still feel the urge to immerse myself in these fun little worlds that i played and made up as a little girl :,)
Thank you for mentioning Catz 2 and Dogz 2!!! I had Dogz 2 and LOVED both this and the LPS DS game. I got Petz Dogz 2 originally thinking it would be more like the others in the franchise, initially disappointed that it was an RPG type (as I wasn't yet appreciative of RPG's) but it grew to become one of my absolute favorite games. I still miss Kenneth the zookeeper😭

Oh man I'm so glad someone else knows about that game, I loved throwing rocks at birds, but I hated the fishing so much, I had my sister catch the blue marlin for that lighthouse quest

You have no idea how much I love content like this! I played Catz and Dogz in the very early 2000s on PC before Ubisoft got the rights, and I loved virtual pet games in general. I always appreciate seeing content creators talk about this often forgotten era of history and sharing their nostalgia for it.
the lps games were an unlikely masterpiece. i never got bored playing it as a kid it was the perfect “girly game.” i highkey wanna go through and play it again 😭

I love little fem-based nostalgia channels like these because I was always looking in on these trends from the outside, like a window shopper as I would have been made fun of for having or asking for these things back then (I was assigned male as a kid but I really REALLY wanted a PixelChix.)

This game isn’t Nintendo but I remember playing this xbox 360 pet game called “kinectimals”. It was weirdly eerie for me lol

Oh god you mentioned games that I totally forgot about, the Petz Fantasy one and Bunnyz are SOO nostalgic, I was obsessed with them and spent so many hours with even though there is so little to do, but I played Fantasy right after I saw it here and maybe it’s cause it was rly late already and I was tired, but I started crying, how could I forget about this? This is a core memory! XD
Bunnyz was the one I played as a kid aside from Nintendogs and seeing your footage already gives me a nostalgia rush, omg. It really reminds me of the simpler times when even some of the most barebones shovelware feel "special" due to their charm and the time it existed when we were just bored kids that don't have a lot of options/money or heavy internet influence to pick our games from and just go with whatever that seems cute/fun to us haha.
I also remember playing Dogz and Catz on the GBA and its amusing seeing how minigames in pet games changed a LOT pre and post-Nintendogs era! I'd love to see you cover the Petz series for that reason, but in general, I'm glad there's more 2000s nostalgia channel like this :D
As a kid I’d play most of these games in a car, the ac and airflow in there constantly activated the microphone. For the longest time I thought I had ghost whistling and activating my pets ;D especially on the lps game ;w;

Pets society was my childhood and I remember uncontrollably crying when my mum had to break the news to me that it was shutting down. I used to sneak in to my mum’s Facebook account just to play that game. Thank you so much for this video - it’s very comforting to take a trip down memory lane as I definitely played most of these games ❤
Love that you covered this, pet and vet games were such a huge part of my childhood! Enough so that a sort of subset of them, online pet games like Neopets, still take over my life to this day in the form of Chicken Smoothie, Flight Rising, and Lorwolf. Modern day virtual pet sites can be a tad bit confusing to get into at first but if you ever felt like making a video on them I would be thrilled :D

Petz Bunnyz seems to look and play very similar to my one of the petz games I remember most fondly called Hamsterz Life, I remember always being curious why all the petz games were so different when i was a kid. Catz on the wii was always my favourite, I loved the story! I also remember owning pawly pets, but it was labelled as a Petz game where I live, I can't remember the exact name and couldn't find the box but i'm pretty sure it was named something to do with horsez

my favorite childhood game was petz catz 2 but on the ps2 - which is an adventure rpg for some reason instead of the "take care of a cat game" lol. the soundtrack is so good and gives me so much nostalgia everytime i hear it😭 its kinda sad to me that catz2 on the ds is completely different

PurrPals was my personal off-brand favorite. Specifically the rhythm game where instead of piano notes, it would be cat meows. There is a particular classical song that will forever be stuck in my head as "that song from PurrPals"

I grew up with the original Dogz and I loved it. I still play dogz 5 now and then! I am not a fan of the direction the franchise took though, I miss the iconic look of the old games.

Man I had so many of the “petz with a z” games as a kid and I loved them just as much as nintendogs. Seeing LPS and My Pet Shop in particular hit me like a truck 😭 those ones were my absolute favourites. I just recently found my Nintendo DS again after 10 or so years and I fully intend to play all of my nostalgic childhood games again. Great video!
I played almost every iteration of the Petz games + Nintendogs and still have my game cards now with my dogs from 07 lol. But I totally forgot about the flash games in this weird 00s craze.. especially the American girl one seeing that unlocked so many memories of me playing it on school computers. Loved this video !!

I grew up on the Petz games, specifically 'Puppyz & Kittenz' and 'Catz playground'! I put so many hours into these games as a kid it's ridiculous. I got the Hampsterz and Monkeyz games too but those never really entertained me for some reason? Great video btw!

I had the Petz Bunnyz game as a kid and I played it almost as often as I did Nintendogs! Most of the reason I played so much of it tbh was just to unlock the rollercoaster toy and then a big enough cage to actually be able to USE the rollercoaster LMAO and I must say... as a kid it was definitely worth all the hours I put in to finally see my bunnies riding around an absurd rollercoaster LOL. I loved this video though, the background music was so nice, your editing is fun, and I love this topic!! Also your avatar is SO cute :]
I loved Catz for the DS, that game was wild. It had a slider system to customize your cats, so I went with a teeny tiny head and a giant body. I also made my cat bright pink, with fairy patterns on her face. The memories… I loved that game. I never got far in it, but I had fun.🤣
These games consumed my childhood. Now I try to fill the void these games left, but nothing does.

the pet simulator i personally grew up with (besides nintendogs) was winx club my fairy pet! i dont really hear anything about the game anymore but it was one of those flash games i would obsessively play lol
also i like how you mentioned the petz series! i never played the series myself but when i look for things like secondhand ds games, even if i specifically search for a title somehow a petz game always manages to appear. it's like everyone owned at least 1 petz game lol

i always enjoyed nintendogs, but something changed once i realized i was neglecting to spend time with my actual pet in favor of these virtual ones. while the ones in my games will always be there, i'm missing out on the life of the real animal that watches me go about playing my game without ever even looking at him. as a child, thinking about that really affected me, so i stopped playing the games and spent the last few years of my childhood dog's life doing with him everything that i was with the virtual dogs in the games. nowadays, i open them again whenever i miss him and i play with the version of him i had adopted as a child, one that looked just like him and that i named after him, like a lot of kids tend to do. i'm really glad i stopped playing nintendogs, just like i'm thankful to nintendogs for letting me see him again.

i was big on petz tigerz i think it was. its unique gameplay was training animals for circus acts, in which you try to balance them by spinning a wheel on the touch screen, with the progressive difficulty being in the form of obstacles you had to take care of during the minigame, like smacking flies away.
and yes of course you took care of your own tigers like nintendogs
Puppy luv is the game I played OVSESSIVELY as a kid, though I played it on computer. I’ve NEVER heard anyone talk about it actually. But this WAS my nintendogs, and I didn’t even know nintendogs was a game that existed until years earlier. Hearing the voice acting clip SENT ME BACKKK

this was such a fun trip down memory lane! boy were those nintendogs mic features ever janky. i remember getting stuck at the very beginning where you have to teach your dog its name because the game just wouldn't recognize what i was saying. miraculously, my friend ended up getting it to work on her ds

My sisters and I loved Nintendogs but also definitely had a couple of those Petz games for DS too! The Ubisoft thing explains a lot, I always wondered why those games were sometimes so drastically different.

20:51 Heck yeah i had the garden version and weirdly had a fun time just...starting over and getting all the pets again. it was a grindfest for coins though which often annoyed me but running around as the pets collecting coins was fun and the music was iconic

I have a disability that effects my voice (among other things) and can vary between being able to speak normally to being completely mute, depending on how much strength my muscles have at the time. It frustrated me so much that a non-skippable part of this and a couple of other games I liked at the time was having to shout into the mic because I was mute an awful lot at that point and it made it hard to play them

I’m SO happy you talked about American Girl’s Pet Grooming Studio!!! My mother tried so hard to get me into the dolls, but I loved the pets! The plushes were just solid blocks with fur but the accompanying games were the BEST! I’m not sure where to play the rest of them, but I love to emulate Grooming Studio when I’m in a bad mood :)

youre the first person ive ever seen mention petz magic!! I had both sunshine and moonlight magic and GOD DID I LOVE THEM. i rememver spending hours trying to unlock all the pets and playing those weird minigames.

I still play most of the petz games. My entire childhood was built off of these, im currently on a journey to find all if the old pet ds games i used to have.
That dog grooming game you mentioned, thats no longer available on flash for obvious reasons, however, you can still play it through a rewritten version of an old game called "moshi monsters" :)

I found my DSi the other day actually! Still have a ton of the games, consisting of: 11 dog/baby/pet simulator games, 4 LPS games, 2 club penguin games, 2 style games, and 1 art tutorial game.
I also had games like Mario Kart but I have no idea what happened to them lol. Just a hoard of baby pet games, which is what 10 year old me loved most

I finally got nintendogs Ds and im so happy, i also had sims afican animals and lps on the Wii during my childhood. I always loved animals when i was a kid! :D
oh my god there was this gameboy game that I played on the DSi called "dogz" that I dont think was within the "petZ" franchise but was so unbelievably charming. It was all 8-bit, you got to pick your character, and then adopt a dog from the pound and bond with them until you had to GIVE YOUR DOG BACK. It was HEARTWRENCHING. I can literally smell this game though. I want to play it again so bad!
As a kid I loved LPS. I got the DSi and the LPS game for Christmas the same year and was so happy. I booted up the game and was asked to choose a language but was only given flags as the option. Being an Irish person (and obviously too young to understand what the flags mean) I chose the Italian flag because I thought it was the Irish one. The whole game ended up being in Italian and I had no idea how to restart. So I played the game in Italian. Silly me :p

This video was so nostalgic and brought me back to the best times. I remember my friend had lps the game on ds, and I just watched her play it on her family ds with 5 cracks in the screen! I was a mooshie monsters kid, and of course the now dead, build a bear website!
One time I even got the my little pony, old style, birthday game out from the library. But then again, that’s a whole other topic. 😅❤
