    I think you missed it, Brad. "We're forced to do battle with our brothers in arms" isn't about fighting our own men; it's about fighting other soldiers in other armies. The lyric recognizes that while they may be from different countries, soldiers on opposing sides are also "brothers in arms", no less honorable, no less courageous, their sacrifices no less painful.

      @Tim Vanderburg I definitely agree that our service members deserve our full respect and honor. But what I think the message was that "brothers in arms," however you define that, should not fight each other. And although the song was written in response to the Falklands War, I agree with @Brad Steele that the analogy can be broadened to include other situations where we fight with words rather than ammunition.

  • @joanneevans2021
    @joanneevans2021 Před 2 lety +6

    The last line of the song sums up the overall meaning. "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms". So fighting in a war is fighting your fellow humans. Fix it some other way than killing each other. In todays times we are fighting amongst ourselves. Again, stop fighting each other. Be respectful and tolerant and try to accept one another. 'We are fools to make war'. Great reaction Brad

  • @playlester

    I think Mark Knophler had a broader context for the last line of this classic Dire Straits song. He wrote this in response to the Falklands War. He was speaking about all the combatants on both sides from the point of view of the dead soldiers. We are fools to make war on our fellow humans. As a former army officer I concur. As a follower of Jesus of Nazareth I refer you to the Gospel. I accept that there is a reason to defend your people, but these wars we have had since WWII were only defense in a vague geopolitical sense, and most were for economic advantage. We were not defending. We were punishing or pushing a cultural advantage.
    The original clouded lyrics with instrumentals and production. Home Free produced a beautiful, in your face, version. It honors the fallen dead while it questions the purpose of their deaths. It honors the brotherhood and sisterhood of those who served, while it issues a FU to those who cravenly sent them.

    Awww I was enjoying this reaction, their version of this song is just gorgeous, haunting and poignant. I wasn't sure about the low key on first listen, Mark Knoppfler sings this so soft and light, but the depth and resonance of the bass brings the song to a whe new level, and those beautiful harmonies replacing the intricate guitar of the original are just genius. You had me, right up til the last line, and then missed the whole point of the song with that comment about fighting with team mates and the sports analogy, brothers in arms is an anti war song, (to be clear, its anti war NOT anti soldier) written by a British band about his fathers experience in the Falkland war seeing the similarities between soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Such a shame to boil it down to just 'support our troops'. A valid sentiment, and there are plenty of songs sung in support of the american military, i just don't think this is one of them. I love Home Frees patriotism and clear love for their country, but I also love that they can see bigger than that and express love and unity for humanity

    you ARE right though about no supporting our Brothers in Arms..our military. Agree with Tim, we should not fight ANY ONE in any country or any land. WE are all human follks...

    This was written as a anti-war song after Britain fought Argentine over the Falklands islands in 1982, and has been been used at military funerals ever since.

    I am making this request from my favorite reactors. November is Alzheimers awareness month so could you please react to Glenn Campbell's final recording after being diagnosed with Alzheimers in his early 70s? It is I'm Not Gonna Miss You dedicated to all affected by this horrid disease.

    The last line in the song is "we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms.". I have listened to several reactions and they are hearing the word as forced. Two very different words that lead to a very different interpretation.
