    VIDEO NOTES:
    1. I know I didn't really touch on Jumping or the Assist/Photo mode(s). If you ask me, they're extra features that are nice additions but aren't too impactful to the main game and I didn't want to make this review too long.
    2. This is not a full critique of the game. I have so much more to say about this game and I can't wait to make a full critique! But I'll save that for the Fall Out series, so it'll be a bit.
    3. Again, HUGE thanks to SEGA for sending me this game! Regardless of my criticisms, I had a really fun time with this game! Within 3 days, I clocked in 26 hours on Steam. So just know that even though I was a little harsh, that doesn't mean the game is unenjoyable.

First - that's awesome that Sega sent you a review copy of the game. Congrats!
Second - Yeah, I basically agree with everything you said here. The controls were tweaked just enough that it probably won't be noticeable to casual fans, but those who played the originals a lot will need to adjust. I'm not saying I was ever that great at the game - but I played SMB 1 enough that I can at least get through ADV without losing a life even if it's been a while since I've picked it up. But I was struggling a bit when I first started playing through Banana Mania. Yeah, not a huge deal, but overall I think the controls in the originals worked better. But, the lack of multiplayer and the botched Monkey Target are the biggest negatives for me. I think I've logged in more hours in SMB1 Monkey Target than the main game in either of the GameCube originals lol - and IMO it's basically unplayable in Banana Mania.
But, yeah, I just hope that this means the franchise isn't dead, and it sends the message that fans want more of this and not Banana Blitz.

RIP to those of us who got it on Switch, I guess. If it’s possible for modere to implement, surely SEGA could add it as an option as well.
I hear you guys even have the old announcer and sound effects as well, which I think are far less likely to get added officially. Maybe I ought to cut my losses and just get the PC version. 😕

I got this game at launch and I'm well pleased with it. I did noticed the controls were a bit off, but it's definitely not unplayable. The monkey target thing never bothered me since I didn't play that much on the originals. I am glad they removed lives and added unlockable characters to make this game more replayable. A lot of people are hard on this game for not playing like 1 and 2, but when you look at it this is more of a deluxe remake than anything. If you look at it as a deluxe remake you will be able to appreciate it more.

Does this mean I have to give all games an 8/10 now? 🤔

I was one of those who really disliked the removing of lives. However after playing the game, my issues faded away. Do I think it should be an option? Yes. But there are so many ways to have replayability. There is a death count and timer after you finish any challenge run, so the game gives you reasons to keep playing and improving. So I don't think it is worse or "against Monkey Ball design", it is something different that keeps the excitement and challenge of Monkey Ball. Although I still waiting for someone to mod a live system or something, we'll see.

You contradicted yourself by saying there is no use for collecting bananas in banana mania but yet you then say that that you have to collect bananas to unlock special modes

      Sorry for the confusion.
I said bananas are “basically worthless” because to unlock stuff, you need a ton of points, which are much easier to collect by doing missions. And since you complete missions naturally, you won’t really ever feel the need to go banana hunting. So while they technically have a purpose, they don’t have much practical use; not nearly as much as they used to, anyway.

As a casual player I’m so glad there is not lives in the challenge modes. For the first time I’ve been able to actually complete them. Admittedly with way more than 99 fall outs. But there is also the mission for doing modes under x number of fall outs.
