      I figured it out myself without a guide but i used the spinjump to get there. The only two times i needed help was how to break the glass on the bridge and that the wall after the Ridely fight is fake. The X-Ray not working makes zero sense because there is no indication that it warns you it doesn't work

    The wall jump is actually not required: The only room it's required in is the room where it's taught to you, which is optional. The Spring Ball is a completely optional powerup, and I think most players don't find it until they're exploring with the Space Jump and Screw Attack

    • @Kardino
      @Kardino  Před 3 lety +5

      Oooh. Well that explains a lot. Not really sure why IGN and GameFAQ’s told me to get it so early but the screw attack would definitely make that room a lot easier.

      @@Kardino I was actually just looking straight up for this comment. You are not intended to climb that shaft until you have the space jump :) The enemies are there intentionally to make it very hard to get up there with the wall jump only. That’s why the enemies are placed in the center rather than to the side, Because if you have the space jump or if you are a very good wall jumper, you can move up the one side only.

    I played through it for the first time in 2020 on Switch online as well :) I rented it back in the day but got stuck (pre internet) so I just gave up and didn't go back to it for like 27 years lol! I also used an online guide to help with a few sticky spots and I got stuck in the same spot you did because I also didn't notice the room on the mini-map. I liked your video's format :)

    @joniivee Před 3 lety +4

    I'm playing the game myself and I have to say that I'm right there with you on the wall jump. It seems like a move that would be simple to execute but instead it's needlessly difficult. That's basically my only complaint though, the game rocks. I enjoyed this video and I think the format would be fun in the future!

    • @Cri_Jackal
      @Cri_Jackal Před 2 lety +1

      You can make it much easier by pressing away from the wall first and then pressing jump immediately after, trying to press both buttons simultaneously will just result in you pressing jump first accidentally and messing it up more often.
      Also, you can repeatedly wall jump off a single wall since you can immediately turn back towards it after performing one, the faster you can input the command the faster you can fly up a wall.
      This is why the technique is difficult, there isn't a single section of the game that requires it, but mastering it comepletely breaks the game and renders several otherwise mandatory items completely optional, you can beat the game without ever collecting the high jump boots, space jump, or even the grapple beam.
      If wall jumping had you pressing into the wall to use it then it would be far to easy to use and everyone would be able to break the game on their first playthrough, so to remedy that they'd have to make it so that you can't turn around immediately after doing one, which is exactly what they do in Metroid Fusion and Samus Returns.

    • @vinny61389
      @vinny61389 Před 2 lety

      The trick that works for me is going by the audio of Samus’ jump. It acts as a metronome of sorts.

    So crazy to see the "Lens" of someone new to this game. At the time, this game looked and felt SO AMAZING and "Perfect" even though it was SO CRYPTIC. Obviously, players patience is so different and shorter these days, but glad to hear today's prime gamers are still enjoying one of the best games ever made. Thanks for recognizing the brilliance and seeing where it has gone and evolved into, such gems are classic for a reason. Great vid and channel!

  • @Cri_Jackal
    @Cri_Jackal Před 2 lety +1

    *Important fact!*
    You only need one wall to wall jump, as you can immediately turn back around after performing one and repeatedly execute the input of the exact same wall over and over, and how fast you go up is only limited by how fast you can move your fingers.
    So any area where there's a straight vertical wall is fair game to sequence break, and if you think your timing is good enough you can even try fancier wall jumps on the more jagged walls, you can completely avoid both the High Jump Boots and the Space Jump if your wall jumping is good enough, and if that fails you still have the infinite height that chained bomb jumps can provide. Even the thinnest platforms can be wall jumped off of if you can time it!
    Also! You should check out the other secret technique, the Shinespark, press down once the Speed Booster activates to store the speed, from there you can launch straight up by pressing jump, or horizontally if you press left or right immediately after pressing jump, using the up angle button will allow you to launch diagonally too. Be warned that this technique drains health as you fly through the air and will only stop once you hit a wall.

    I would recommend that you replay the game and try to sequence break it a bit, it's a lot of fun and it's really rewarding when you go into places with more goodies than you are supposed to. Additionaly I would also suggest that once you feel comfortable enough with a few sequence breaks that you attempt a randomizer. Randomizer are sort of romhacks that randomizer every item place. Similar to sequence breaking it feels great to have items you aren't supposed to have yet and the combinations are nearly limitless. Anyways if all of this seems intimidating I suggest that you replay the game and try to use the wall jump more. Thanks for making the video. It was really interesting to see a newcomers perspective

It's not 110% on rails though, you're given an objective, a task to complete or a place to get to, etc. but you still get to figure out how to get there

    Honestly I found it very frustrating to play, pretty much because of the negative points you outlined. Been a long time since a game made me sigh so much lol.
    Maybe I was just in a bitchy mindset - I had just finshed Zero Mission and had _hated_ everything from Tourian onwards - but I spent most of my playthrough buried in guides and area map JPEGs. I don't mind being lost, Dread was my first Metroid game and being lost dodnt bother me too much because it was a joy to play and navigating the world didnt take half as long as it does in Super. But being ground to a halt every 5 minutes (looking at you, Maridia!) got tiresome. By the time I reached Ridley's lair, I just wanted it to be over...
    ...And yet, strangely enough, I have a desire to play it again. The final boss was brilliant (even if it's basically a giant cutscene lol) the music was very memorable the silent/environmental storytelling was marvellous and the overall world design was undoubtedly a strength, albeit too frustrating for its own good.
    It's still one of the greatest games of all time, even if I personally didn't enjoy it as much as I expected to. I want to love it like everyone else does, but I don't think I'm there yet. 🤷‍♂️

    super metroid is not a perfect game at least to me. Dont get me wrong, the game is amazing and im saying that without finishing it yet, but my main problem with the game is the map, the bosses, and the way samas feels when she jumps and also how hard it is to pull off a wall jump.
    The map is in a grid, which as most of ya'll know makes the rooms look like blocks, which leads to confusion on if rooms are connected or not. Oh and two other things about the map is that you cant see the full thing and compared to my favorite game of all time, Hollow Knight who really made you remember the areas by having the title of the area decorated at the top, I...... well now that im thinking about it, after maridia and coming back to the wrecked ship leading me to crateria and taking a elevator to overgrown brinistar and to lower brinistar and from backtracking all the way from crateria to norfair to finally defeat ridley. You know after defeating ridley I memorized most of the map, but not like I do for hollow knight.
    But speaking of bosses like ridley lets talk bosses. To sum it up there kinda annoying, I mean you basically just spam at them they dont have strategy to them and when they do its really hard to pick up on. like for that you one boss you have to kill to get the space jump where you have to stumble upon the fact that you have to use your grappling beam to electrocute the boss. Or when you, for some reason have to get into a ball to escape ridleys clutch. Wait what, why couldn't they just let you get free hits on him and he'll let you go. And since using missiles were doing nothing I so happened to watch a video to help defeat the space pirates before the boss room and I figured out that my ice/charge/spasma beam worked way more.
    Now for the jump, simple. When im jumping to tiny platform to tiny platform its something I cant explain... mainly because its 12:00 but the jump is annoying sometimes. And for the wall jump. If you train for a while you'll get much more better at it.
    And to sum it all up, I wish the map was more like Hollow Knight's, I wish the bosses had more strategy and form like with most bosses in Hollow Knight and I wish there were more reads on the boss to better dodge there moves, I wish that the feel of samus was more like Hollow Knight, and I wish SilkSong could come out already....oh and im also exited for metroid dread.

    Unpopular opinion: Super Metroid is overrated, even for when it was released. The best thing it has is it's setting. The music is good too. Pretty much everything else is mediocre at best. The game is incredibly clunky, like unreasonably so. MegaMan X is from a similar era and style and controls flawlessly by comparison. Then there's the level design, it's just meh, it makes you back track a ton of times and apparently people have come to rationalize this into a good thing? It's lazy. Then the actual gameplay system, the physics of the game are terrible. Jumping sometimes is just a chore, it's not hard but laborious for someone who isn't on their 15th Speedrun this month. Then there is the wall jumping, it has too high of a failure rate to be used as a needed mechanic so why did they even bother putting it in the game? It's there but totally superfluous because of failed execution by Nintendo. It's fun jumping around shooting things and exploring for the first time, making it to the end on a blind Run with no guides was a pain though and I was left more with a feeling of abandonment and never wanting to play it again. I felt like because it is so highly regarded by nearly everyone I forced myself to play it to the end despite not liking it and that probably contributes to my ill will towards it, but at least I gave it a shot. I'd give it 5/10. Mediocre at best.

    • @Cri_Jackal
      @Cri_Jackal Před 2 lety +1

      Going back to previous areas with new tooks to reach new items is the definition of the genre, if it were hust a straight horizontal progression of areas with no backtracking required then it would just be lazy and linear.
      As for the physics, they are just something you have to get used to, fighting against them will just cause frustration, you'll have a much better time if you spend some time learning how the momemtum works, remember that running and then jumping carries over your speed into the jump.
      And you've completely misunderstood wall jumping, wall jumping is not required in any part of the game, AT ALL, there is not a single part where you need to use it.
      But if you can master it, it turns the high jump boots, space jump, and grapple beam into 100% optional items, this is why it's difficult to execute if you don't have the timing down, it's designed specifically to let you break the game, making it easy for anyone to perform wouldn't make sense.
      Also, I assume you tried to pressing away from the wall and the jump button simultaneously, doing it like that will only multiply the chance for misinputting it, you're supposed to press away and _then_ immediately press jump, not at the same time, it's more of a quick one-two input, and from there you can just repeatedly jump up a single wall if your inputs are consistent.
      Again, I know this sounds needlessly complicated, but that's intentional, making this technique easy to execute would be like making Akuma's Raging Demon a quarter-circle-punch input.

If it is never required and is only used to "break the game" by doing in sections that it wasn't intended to be used it only creates frustration. Another ability would do it better so why bother? What they should have done is fleshed it out more in the game, made it easier and thus allowing for areas to use it. The best example of their idea here is the springball area, pretty large gap but enough to wall jump, get to the top and the enemies hit you and knock you down. So what you have to do is play twister with your fingers jumping back up and shooting them.
      I'm not saying it's a bad game. Compare it to MMX though. Visually just as good, gameplay is tight and responsive. Hidden items and upgrades for you suit. Challenging level designs. Similar story with manipulated wall jump to reach areas early. I just think that the fans of Metroid place it a bit high than it deserves and that's alright. Just need to have my own grounded opinion.

      @@jakeslamakowski6990 because it's fun, rewarding the player for mastering something difficult and using it to play the game in new ways it inherently fun, it's only frustrating if you want it to be.
      If it took no skill then it would have no value.
      "Another ability would do it better"
      If your good at wall jumping then you'll never need said other ability, wall jumping allows you to beat the game while skipping several otherwise mandatory items, which will allow you to _get a better time,_ all metroid games are designed to be speedrun, the point of the wall jump is that it's a difficult technique that will drastically improve your time, and even outside of speedrunning it can still be used to to interesting skips on different playthroughs.
      And regarding that area with the enemies at the top, momemtum is preserved no matter what your doing, simply angle up and shoot towards them after wall jumping, or just wall jump faster then they can fly towards you, or go into morph ball and use a power bomb, or just use the size of the morph ball to slio past them since your momentum will be preserved from the wall jump and you'll keep rising as long as you're still holding jump.

      @@Cri_Jackal so much wrong with what you believe here.
      Something being easier doesn't necessarily devalue it if it can be elevated by being more important or having actual gameplay use. It being frustrating to use is not something that people "want it to be" it is objectively frustrating to many people who play the game. It's use being ambiguous leads people to waste time trying to jump up places that they don't need to be wasting their time with. That is a flaw in design, no fault of a player wanting to be frustrated.
      Secondly the game isn't/wasn't intended to be only a Speedrun game, the amount of secret areas and hidden items would completely counter that statement. Sonic games are Speedrun games by design and there isn't anything like Metroid's x-ray visor to find all the hidden paths. Speedrunning is what has kept Metroid relevant to this day but it wasn't purely the intention of the developers. Just because you can beat it fast doesn't mean that they only wanted you to play that way.

      @@jakeslamakowski6990 if it's frustrating, then just don't do it, it's optional, that's the point, it's added complexity that rewards people who put in the effort.
      If it were easy to use and implemented as a standard mechanic, then the Space Jump and High Jump would be redundant and have no reason to ever be obtained on a casual run, rather than avoiding them being a way of creating a hard mode through player choice outside of a difficulty selection.
      And yes, Super Metroid is a slow and methodical collectathon, and a speedrun game, the player is free to choose which way they play the game, but the game is designed to facilitate both, with the wall jump, infinite bomb jump, and shinespark all being gate keeping tools to separate causal and expert play, as those tricks can very easily get a player stuck and forced to something even more complex to get out if they don't know what they're doing.
      And just fyi, the 100% glitchless speedrun currently sits at about 1 hour 10 minutes, so you can even do both at the same time, like any other game, Super Metroid is one of the reasons why any% and 100% are even universal speedrun categories to begin with.
