I'm Italian and I'm not proud of Benigni. A man that who gifted himself to Hollywood lobby. In 1983 Benigni took Berlinguer (leader of the Italian Communist Party) in his arms, in 1997 denied the liberation of the camps by the Soviets. But, you know, the things you do to win an Oscar.

I've seen all reactors say "oh Bartolomeo is also playing along with the game", but he's actually not, here's a little linguistic trick 🙃 in Italian, the word for "point" (as in a game) is the same for "stitches" (as in when you cut yourself), so Bartolomeo is actually saying "I got 20 stitches (I got stitched up)" but of course little Giosuè understands it as "I got 20 points (in the game)"

I took Italian in middle and high school for 5 years. I watched this movie for the first time in my 3rd year of it, and it was surprising how much I liked it even knowing none of it was in english. I thought I'd struggle to understand, but even with my rough understanding of the language, you really didn't need words to understand every single scene

I have this movie on DVD as Life is Beautiful, and it has both Italian and English languages. I prefer the Italian version even though I don't understand Italian. After hearing Italian for almost the whole movie, it was a bit of a change to hear the English from the American soldier at the end.

*2. in Movie Schindler's List, In Ending Scene when the people saved by Schindler gather on the tracks, and Oskar breaks down in tears at the horror of what happened.*

It's satire, indeed, not a joke. The part with the boombastic music and the jews walking and the army of americans arriving (quite late and staying in their tanks and not réálly helping them right there) is sarcasm. Like oh whoop-dee-doo, I guess we are saved!' It is as much a mirror to all the countries involved as it is an hommage to love and hope.

The gesture he makes at the beginning when they drive (by mistake) into the parade of people, trying to tell them to get out of the way, is actually being mistaken NOT as a gesture of hello, but as the “Roman Salute” a fascist gesture used by Mussolini when the fascist party took control of Italy, and so the people waiting along the parade route assume the car is part of the fascist party. My elementary school teacher made us watch this movie when I was around 10, few years after it came out, it changed me forever.
I also went to Arezzo, where the movie was shot, a couple of times (I live in Italy), it's a beautiful place but it always reminds me of this movie.
