  • A Very good dash cam Reviewed! The VanTrue N4 3 channel dash cam.
In this video I review the VanTrue N4 Dash cam. The company sent me this cemra for a review and I review it in my unconventional way of reviewing products.

I spend a month testing this camera on my daily long commute to work and I was overall very impressed. Most people seek out little features in these cameras but in my opinion a Camera should do one very basic and very important thing. BE A GOOD CAMERA!
This camera's quality both in day and night filming is very impressive and likely one of the top pros for this dash cam.
Some of the cons of this camera is it's price and it's non out of the box plug and play. You need to buy an SD card to get a fully functioning out of the box dash cam. I wish the company would include the SD card with the camera to make it a Full package!

Five years ago, the dashcam saved me about $3500.00 when my daughter (was a new driver back then) 's car was hit and the other more experienced driver was jumping up and down claiming that my daughter hit her car. She even filed claim against my insurance for damages by pointing out that my daughter was an inexperienced driver. She was loud and demanding! After I viewed the dashcam footage, I called her insurance up and told them that the all accident was on film. I sent the video clip to the other's driver's insurance company and they admitted fault, paid for my car, and the most satisfaction was... I was able to shut up the other driver's mouth right up.

I had a similar situation with my Garmin 57 dashcam. When I provided the other driver's insurance company a clip of the footage it conclusively proved she caused the accident, they accepted responsibility & paid to have my car repaired. My dashcam footage was the ONLY witness to the accident. No eye witnesses, no Police report.

Here are some added benefits I have found: If you have your screen on at night and someone wants to bully you on the road, when they pull up beside you they suddenly change their mind when they see the camera. This has happened to me and the wife coming home late night night. Also, when filling up at the gas station I am not approached by people hardly ever anymore. I think you will see it really does make a difference.

SD cards don't differ only by capacity, but also by read / write speeds - that's what card classes designate. The higher the resolution that the camera records, the more information (bytes) per second has to be stored. And this dashcam needs to record from 3 sources on the same SD card! That's why you can't simply use cheap SD cards with dashcams, they tend to require expensive ones. Especially dashcams of higher quality.

    • @Carl_Brutananadilewski

And for anyone else who might not be aware, I'd like to add they are constantly writing new data over and over. Get a high endurance SD card otherwise you WILL kill the SD card.

A nice bonus if the passenger-cam part of the dashcam, has the motion sensor recording function during parking mode.
This would help capture those vandalism cases as they peek through the side of the car to see if there's anything to steal or to scratch your car doors.

Late to the party, but a pro tip, as I've noticed many questions on one particular subject: Plate visibility.
Read the plate number and give a description of the make/model/color of the car and any other important info. The dashcam will record your voice and this will be helpful, especially with hit n run accidents.

The Car Care Nut: Any chance you can offer a video showing some quick installs for some of the newer Toyota vehicles? My 2016 Camry Hybrid after going through 2 different High rated dash cams (Same Brand) power supplies failed. One failed in 2 days, there flag ship failed a week later when I was playing around with the screen saver settings and left it alone for a couple minutes, then just went out and never worked again. Now I have a Garmin RV 75 with a 1080P cam. Not the quality of my other dash cam, but after 3 weeks, it works like a champ at $410 bucks.
Sorry, can you offer any quick installations on some of these hybrids and other vehicles that installing cams can be a bit tricky to say the least. Thank you so much!

They key is if it keeps working over time - sub zero nights in the winter and 130° interior temperatures in the summer, inside the car. Reading reviews, that is what separates the really good cameras from the rest. If you have an accident and it wasn't working, it is all a total waste of time and money.

This model was too expensive for me but recently installed a Z-Edge R1 system for $99 which has room for a 256 GB sim card and records front/rear in HD quality. The WiFi feature is the best...I can download right onto my iPhone but found the 5-minute blocks are a little large (200 MB) so changing it back down to the default, which is 3 minutes. I didn't want to mount the rear camera on my tinted rear window (Prius) so put it in the little non-tinted rear glass in the hatch and works great! (The system can record 40-hours before it rewrites over the oldest and also will write-protect videos when it detects hard collisions and I'm hoping to never see that in use!)

A dash cam is a good idea. I was in a minor accident last summer. My insurance company and the police agreed the accident was the other drivers fault but not citation was issued. The other party thought that wasn't so and they and their insurance didn't want to pay. The case was taken all the way to arbitration with both insurance companies. In the end they declared it no fault because neither party could prove who was at the stop sign first. If I would have had a video I would have had that proof and saved a claim on my record and $500 deductible. I have one now.

I usually leave the car parked for four to five days straight, longest was two weeks, since I live in dorms and come home on weekends. These dashcams use VERY little power so if you set it up correctly, you will hardly have any problem regarding battery drain.
Plus it will look more professional. None of my passengers could ever tell I have a dashcam until I point it out. Out of the dozen or so passengers I have had, only one was able to find it and that's only because he knew I don't drive without a dashcam 😂

Also, since it is connected to the battery, mine, 12 Volt, does it shut off and does it come with a sensor whick can turn it on if something happens around the car, thief, vandalism, etc.? How was it to install with all the wiring? Easy, difficult, etc... Thanks :-)

    • @TheCarCareNut
      @TheCarCareNut  Před 3 lety +1

Hi! The installation was very simple honestly. You can tuck the wire behind trim and really don’t require any modifications as it plugs into the power outlet. As the camera comes it doesn’t work with the car off as the power outlet powers down. If you want it on when the car is off you’d need to hard wire it and then it’ll go into parking mode where it has first a low battery protection where when it sees a low battery it will shut off and then it has a g force sensor where it’ll pick up movement and record

It must be said, I've been saying this for decades about small to mid-sized guitar companies...
While they charge $280 for common folks on Amazon, they're giving away free ones and possibly paying for the placement.
Since these Chinese manufacturers pretty much copy each other, many factories will just relabel the products and you will find this very same thing under a different brand name at a much better price. Plus, there's a complaint about the mounting system being integrated with the power supply or something that I read in one of the reviews. You could literally buy three units to replicate what this product has (ahead, behind, passenger cabin) and pay considerably less! Something I have been thinking about is a GPS unit with a dash cam integrated. I have also seen head units that offer radio, Bluetooth audio, GPS and a DVR function for any cameras that you connect. While that is very intriguing, I wonder if the memory card would survive a serious accident as well as a loose camera that might fly around but survive well enough that law enforcement could grab the card out of it.
Ahmed, next time you get a product like that, do what Grandpa Scotty Kilmer used to do... Demand extras to be given away to your viewers. Remember "Mechanic Monday?" He would talk about something and give one or more away.
Between Ahmed (hands on tutorials, advice, car features and reviews), Toyota Maintenance with Peter (or is it Piotr?) and Scotty, my Toyota vocabulary has grown exponentially!

You are not kidding about people speeding by you in the fast lane! The video looks really good! Is there a way to install the rear camera if your window is completely tinted? I bought 2 cameras that were supposed to be real good. 1 lasted 3 days till the power supply inside the device failed. The 2nd which was their most expensive with a discount of $100 bucks off and was $400 lasted about a week plugged into my cigarette lighter. I was using the screen saver playing around with that and a minute later the screen went black and never came back. Same power supply issue and the brand has all these great reviews. I have a Garmin RV 785 I tried to use as a Navigator / Camera in my Camry 16. Great build quality had it for 4 months now. Never had it go out except when its sitting in the sun most of the day and comes on and shuts off due to over heating, but still works good. Very durable. Looking for something different because software is rather poor. Can find most locations, maps are a good 5 years behind and it still treats even after setting it up in car mode still wants to take you for long ways around to get to your destination.
I been thinking about either selling it and getting I hope a good cam setup like what you have that is reliable, or just turning it into a camera only and going to Apple Maps especially the new iOS 15 that have incredible mapping details and is so much better updated.
Always value your opinion, AMD. Thanks again for a great video!

Actually most of them on amazon, a lot of the best sellers, they say do not use sandisk. I e even said no samsung. Most of them said to use Kingston and something else. So to be on the safe side, it would probably be better to either samsung, lexar, kingston or some other generic brand. A lot of the dash cams literally said to use generic ones in class 10 or u3.

@@TheCarCareNut So not sure if you are became aware since making this video, but the reason you might have had issues with the SanDisk card (and the camera manufacture says not to use it) is that it is not designed for constant use. While there may be a unknown reason you have to use their VanTrue branded card, your typical SanDisk (or Samsung) card is designed for intermittent use in photography cameras, not constant use (High Endurance) in a survailence system or other recording device.
So as much as I love Best Buy, when it comes to cards to meet specific requirements I typically go to B&H to get the right card for the job.
While I am a hobbiest photographer, I am also a gamer, and I can tell you from experience, every use case has a card for it. For example, Nintendo hardware is notoriously picky with the micro sd cards you use with their systems.
And actually my camera install involves replacing the wiring harness to the rear view mirror, so I will probably get a professional installation.

Hi, I have the N2 Pro since 2018 and I hooked it up with a OBD port connector ( bought it separately from vantrue for ~$20 ) so that it could also record while parked. Unfortunately that cord was sliced partially by a guy who changed to my inspection sticker. So once in a while the connection would get lost and then come back after a little nudge. Then one day I noticed my car did not make that locking & unlocking doors beeps anymore, neither does it make the sound if try to lock the door with my windows open or my keys were inside when. I tried going through the settings but even with the settings turned “on” I would not hear those beeping sounds. I don’t know if there was a short circuit that blew a fuse which controls those beeping noises.
