- This is the first video of an eleven part video series that chronicles everything that takes place in the Super Mario Universe. Chapter 0 explains the structure of the universe as well its general contents.

You’ve definitely sifted through A LOT of material and had to make some decisions about what to cut out. Great job explaining the universe and its boundaries. Can’t wait for the rest of the parts!
Yes. Some people might choose to believe that other series take place in the Mario Universe such as The Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing. However, after examining the lore of these series it shouldn't be considered a possibility in my opinion. I think a universe that has structure and boundaries is more interesting that one that does not.
Dang you did a good job with explaining things I never knew. Like the Mario and Luigi were twins not just brothers.
Yes, Mario and Luigi were delivered to their parents at the end of Yoshi's New Island at the same time. So they should be considered twins. While it is stated that Luigi is Mario's younger brother in the instruction manual of Mario Kart DS it doesn't say that they aren't twins. So it should be assumed that Luigi is Mario's younger twin brother. How his parents determined which of the two twins were older given the situation is completely up to speculation.

Its been too long since we've gotten a new Donkey Kong game in my opinion. If and when that happens will definitely be hype.

@@prizm9515 Well all right, I will tell you. So my huge and desperate wishes include some new Mario characters, a new 3D Mario game titled Super Mario Majestia, and some songs. I currently imagine 6 Mario characters, Super Mario Majestia being an awesome game, and 3 songs titled Venture with the Arcane, Vigorous Triumph, and Follow the Power and Me. Hmm, um, sorry if you do not find any of my wishes very good.

objection, that alone is not enough evidence to know a timeline placement. Super Mario RPG could easily take place in 2023 because maybe the Toad still enjoys his GameBoy even though it's retro hardware
we can assume this because it's normal IRL to play retro games on native hardware

I would mention some games have markers for time passing such as Dr. Mario NES says a few years have passed. Each time Peach has a birthday. I also recall some people saying that in Dream Team the characters state at least 4 years have passed since the previous game.
Don't quote me on this but some people have stated Miyamoto has said 2 years is how long it took between DKA and SMB.
Speaking of SMB Did Somebody Call A Plumber implies Mario Bros. took place right before Super Mario Bros.
SMB4SMW we know takes place right after SMB3.
And one can infer games like SM3DL comes before Superstar Saga and by extension Super Mario Sunshine possibly.
I'd note the 30 years thing from Huey was probably just a meta joke like how when Goombella says Cheep Cheeps are iconic enemies from Super Mario Bros.
What are the Japanese names?
I don't think Doki Doki Panic itself is canon but rather SMB2USA given this is where Birdo originates from, she reappears in the sequel BSSMUSA.
DK Island is part of Kong Archipelago which is near the Metro Kingdom. Yes, I know it was originally near the Mushroom Kingdom but due to future games that seems to have been retconned.
In the GamesHub interview titled How Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope forges its own destiny, it is established that Mario + Rabbids is a separate canon.
_"While the game is also inspired by elements of Super Mario Galaxy, Soliani made clear that Sparks of Hope is all about exploring the unique Mario + Rabbids universe in depth a realm filled with colour, beauty, and intrigue, but one that is separate from the main ‘canon’ of Mario tales." _
So I would call this continuity the Rabbidsverse or MarioPlusRabbidsverse which would be separate from the Gameverse, Primeverse, or MarioTalesverse.
Also, that one is useful to prove there is a canon, let alone a consistent canon.
I agree with what you said about Punch Out, however there is 2 Punch Out Continuities.
While the Olympic games could be canon, you would need to take into account the Sonic Timeline.
Thank you for acknowledging Smash Bros isn't canon. The amount of times I have to bring up the 64 and melee intros or the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct 11.1.2018 gets irritating.w
On Skylanders there is a tie in comic that shows Bowser and Donkey Kong showing up in Skylands and they aren't ever turned into toys. They show up because of a dimensional rift and agree to aid the Skylanders if they are sent home, and become honorary Skylanders. The game in question kinda does away with the whole toys thing given the plot. The only time Skylanders were turned into toys are in games like swap force, the first game, and I believe trap team.
I disagree with characters like Link and the Inklings being part of this timeline, and others like Samus are probably from extradimesional worlds.
Link in particular or should I say Links exist in various timelines and over time while Mario has a limited amount of year in the timeline, there is only one, and the Mario timeline cannot split.
The Inklings have their origin in a distant version of earth like how you have in Kirby.

So I disagree with the Paper Mario games not being canon, here's why.
So Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam introduced a Paper Mario from another world that came from a book. This has lead many people to conclude that the Paper Games are not canon to the Canon of Mario Tales.
However, I disagree with this and believe there is an alternative answer to this.
So I believe there are 2 Paper Marios, once from the Paper Jam Book, and the other is the Main Mario from all the games taking on a Paper form.
So what do I mean by Paper form?
Well on the back of the box of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door it says _"Time passes, the pages turn...and a new chapter unfolds in an unfamiliar land! Get ready for a two-dimensional role-playing adventure for the ages as Mario returns to paper form to discover a mystery that sleeps behind an ancient, legendary portal called the Thousand-Year Door."_
This text alongside things like dev interviews has lead me and some others to believe the Main Mario is able to take on a Paper Form.
This would be similar to the Pixel Form we know he can take on through various means.
So as for the Paper Jam Paper Mario.
Something that goes overlooked or is seen as a continuity error in Paper Jam is the Sticker Crown Pokey showing up, when the Crown should only be around if some messed with the Sticker Comet. However, I think this is telling us that the events of Paper Mario: Sticker Star hasn't fully happened to this Paper Mario.
This would also explain why there is no Paper Starlow running around. This Paper Mario has yet to go through the events of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
Now someone might point to Mario folding himself into an airplane in PMTTYD, the sentient Scissors, or the Paint and other craft themes of the Paper games and say Mario can't do that.
But first off as established before, Mario more than likely can take on a Paper Form, but let's say he can't.
This is a high fantasy world with man eating plants, alongside sentient talking trees and sunflowers, hexapod dragons, still living non-avian dinosaurs, reanimated skeletons, turtles that can remove their shells, straight up magic, clouds you can physically ride on, the ability to enter dreams, zippers on terrain you can unzip, swim through the air like a cartoon, be roll yourself up into a wall and use your body as an attack, be flattened like a pancake, or have your body turned into a pinball etc.
So Mario being able change his body into an airplane is not too farfetched.
Also, sentient scissors is not too different from Exor and Kleever. That and if I am correct the scissors were brought too life by the Fold of Life technique aka magic.
Meanwhile paint and vim are a thing in the Mario world.
Now while someone might agree with all this, they may still contend that Sticker Star and Beyond is canon, and may insist it's part of the Paper Jam Continuity.
Now as established before the Paper Jam Paper Mario is yet to go through the events of PMSS, there is something else here.
We all know the original 3 Paper games referenced the events of the previous games several times.
Parakarry shows up in PMTTYD, Kolorado is referenced by the presence of his father's skeleton, and there is a picture of the Paper Mario 64 characters. Meanwhile in Super Paper Mario Francis' Room has references to the previous games.
Well turns out PMSS and Paper Mario: The Origami King do the same thing.
In PMSS in the Shy Guy Jungle's Trash Are you can find letters from Parakarry and Goombella which says the following.
_"Thank you for your letter. Sorry I'm not here to receive it, but I will get back to you shortly. Thanks."_ Parakarry
_"Observations on the Ancient Civilization of the Chomp Ruins."_ University of Goom Goombella
And in PMTOK we see photos of Peach from every single Paper Mario Games.
This also explains why the Star Spirits show up in MP5 and get referenced in Inside Story.
Why Whackas show up in MP6.
Why in Mario Golf: Advance Tour the Leaderboard will occasionally show names of characters from Paper Mario. These names include The names of Kooper, Bombette, Goombario, Tubba Blubba, and Moustafa.
Why the Koopatrol show up in Mario Pinball Land and statues of them show up in Super Princess Peach.
Why a Mini Yoshi Egg shows up in Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 under the name Mystery Egg.
Why Paper Hammer Bros. Gear is in Mario Kart Super Circuit.
Why Dry Dry Ruins is raised in MK.
Why PM64 Bowser's castle in MKSC.
Why Luigi's Diary mention Sports, Party, and Kart games having taken place prior.
And why King Goomboss who origins rely on the events of PM64 having happened shows up in SM64DS and MKDS.

A: When I first started making this timeline I actually did want to include all of the supplemental cannon, but it proved to be way too contradictory to information found directly in the games. Just a couple of examples include.
Miyamoto stating that Mario is 24 or 25 years old, which is impossible for all of the games to take place in only 2 years. Also In Mario and Luigi Superstar saga, Tuki refers to Mario and Luigi as middle aged.
Miyamoto stating that the Koopalings are not bowsers kids even though the instruction manual of Super Mario Bros 3 explicitly stating that they are. It’s never stated in any of the games that they are not his kids.
Miyamoto also stated that Mario’s last name is Mario which would make Luigi’s full name Luigi Mario. This has never been contradicted but its totally ridiculous.
There’s also supplemental cannon stating that Donkey Kong and Bowser traveled to Skylands and became Skylanders. This would mean that the Skylanders games take place in the same universe. That was proven to be too enigmatic to make sense. More on that down below.
One of the main purposes of this timeline is to be as consistent as possible. This meant that I was going to include all of it, or none of it. What I consider supplemental cannon is any information not found directly in the game itself, or it’s instruction manual. The instruction manual is where the story is told for most games before games were advanced enough to include them in the game.
If someone is willing to make a timeline including everything in the Mario universe as well as all of its supplemental cannon, then that would be awesome and I would love to watch that video, but for me I couldn’t get everything to make sense if I included it. There’s just too much of it to sift though, and trying to determine which of it is cannon, and which is not was way too subjective.
I feel like that difference in opinion will be the reason for a lot of things I might say regarding your other questions so just keep that in mind.

A: Yes, and all of that type of information gets accounted for once those games become relevant. This first video was only a brief introduction to the main structure of the universe. The actually timeline and how everything fits together gets explained in future videos.

A: Yeah, that’s something I would consider supplemental cannon.

A: I try to make as few assumptions as possible in this timeline. I only make assumptions what I have too, and when I do I always try to make the most reasonable assumption. Mario bros does take place before Super Mario Bros but not right before. More on that in Chapter 3.

A: Not sure what grounds an inference like that comes from. I didn’t find any information eluding to that.

A: Sure it could be interpreted as a fourth wall break, but I think it makes the most sense to take everything at face value.

A: I’m assuming you are talking about Densetsu no Stafy series, which is referred to as the Legendary Starfy series in English.

A: I considered it cannon because its story is very similar to Super Mario Bros 2. Also it features Birdo who is a very prominent Mario character.

A: As far as locations are concerned, I only care about what planet a location exists on. DK island and Metro Kingdom exist on the Mushroom World.

A: I would consider that supplemental cannon. Assuming that the time washing machine has the power to create an entire universe is a much more unreasonable assumption to make than to assume that it just sent the Rabbids to the Mushroom World. Both of the Mario plus Rabbids games are said to take place in the Mushroom Kingdom and by extension the Super Mario Universe. Donkey Kong Adventure is explicitly stated to take place in a different universe, but the characters return back to the Mario Universe afterwards.

A: Not sure where that information comes from. The timeline works just fine if they all exist in a single continuity.

A: I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t be considered cannon. There are about 17 different instances of Mario characters traveling to Earth. There’s no reason to believe this isn’t just another interplanetary venture. The Sonic series is proven to take place on a different version of Earth than the one that the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series is set in. In the Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter games, toad states that Sonic and his friends came there from their world. The home world of Sonic is a separate version of Earth, and due to the assumption that each universe can only contain a single version of Earth the sonic series is assumed to take place in a different universe. If someone were to assume that each universe can contain multiple version of Earth than it could be assumed to take place in the same universe. But just like the Glade of Dreams, it would still take place on a different planet that the Mushroom World, and due to the theory of general relativity, it would be impossible to compare the two timelines, as the passing of time relative to one another would impossible to compare the timelines side by side. The only reason the two timelines of Earth and the Mushroom World can be compared is due to the mountain of evidence pointing to the fact that the passage of time between the two planets is a perfect 1:1 ratio.
