Maybe their most overlooked song. I love the lyrics, esp “I’m nearly great but there’s something missing. I left it in the duty free, oh, but you never really belonged to me.” Classic Bono cheekiness.
POP is a masterpiece and the last brave U2 album. I believe they were trying to make their 1990's version of Sgt. Pepper. The advancement of electronic music in Europe, trip hop, rave culture and the harking back to 60's songwriting values brought U2 to the point where they thought they could bring everything together and that they were the band to break the mould again. It's a very brave move and a joy to listen to in 2022. Ironically it sounds less dated in 2022 than it did in 1997/8. The band were never the same after this album.
I truly believed they could do anything back then. They were out there at the forefront. Just wished they hadn’t booked the stadium tour before the album had finished… had time to polish off the album and sometime to sell the concept
@@kevinodonnell261 at the time, in the U.K at least, in terms of electronic rock music in popular culture - The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers were considered much more cooler, groundbreaking and innovative - along with the Trip hop explosion such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky etc - U2, in 1997 with the release of POP, seemed to be lagging behind and were seen as old-timers trying to catch up and mimick the latest trends - Howie B wasn't leading the pack of new, young producers - in fact, U2 wanted Liam Howlett to work with them for POP and he declined. Looking back in 2023, the brilliant songwriting and band and instrumentation on POP holds the album in great stead and outshines all those "cooler" tech albums of 1997, because of the fact it's an actual band effort. I love the album from start to finish today. I think it's probably one of their best albums - I love the "unfinished" feel to it. U2 can be their own worst enemy, strangling the life out their albums - their last 2 studio albums being the worst offenders.
Absolutely agreed. Bono was coming off the worldwide success of songs (and lyrics!) like Miss Sarajevo and Lemon. Singles as poetic and bold as anyone's been able to smuggle into the mainstream. Must've felt emboldened to go all the way with songs like Mofo and Wake Up Dead Man. Then they got cut into pieces. POP hasn't even gotten the kind of reevaluation this kind of achievement usually does, which just boggles my mind.
i always thought this song is about two young lovers hit by a bomb as they kissing each other and trying to love each other while their country is at war, their ears deafened by the bomb(there's an insect in your ears...it'gonna burn and sting) . To me the sun represents the explosion as they starring at it... Will we ever live in peace?
In the 90s, short after Popmart concert in my country, appeared this clip on TV, never watched it again until now. BTW, I never knew anything about U2 until Popmart. Later, with ATYCLB, I downloaded several songs, but I didn't get their style at first, but somehow they became my fav band, and I was in Joshua Three concert in october 2017.
Love the song. With Bono channelling his inner Fidel Castro in the video, especially around Miami, it's a wonder those old Cubans didn't kick his arse! 🤪🤣✌️
IF you're from Miami back when this vid was shot in 1997 you might remember CASABLANCA restaurant on 8th Street which is no longer around.. It's the storefront with all the Superheroes painted on the white wall... damn time flies, seems like only yesterday I was a kid visiting Miami with relatives during summer break and stopped by that joint for steak, rice & black beans 🤗🤗
I wonder if Bono and rest of them tried some Cuban coffee, flan, guava pastelitos, as well the chicken and ham croquettes made in this town while in Miami.
I'm waiting to hear who I used to work with told you something negative about me and what it was you want me to support you mentally and emotionally when. You won't do the same for me.thats b just great.

My ultimate summer song ☀️
Hello, how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
For me, one of the most underrated albums in U2’s catalog. Love Pop. More Pop!
One of Bono's very best vocals. I love this.
What a wonderful feeling to see Bono, The Edge, Larry and Adam young. Forever U2!
I always felt that Pop was a great rock album that never fully got the appreciation that it deserves.
POP is a masterpiece.
Indeed much more creative than the others yet to come
Pop is last great U2 album.
My nostalgia is insanely hot right now
"Miami" & "Do You Feel Loved" complete versions from "A Year In Pop" PLEASE!!!
It's more than a masterpiece, it's a message
👊🏼✌🏼🤟🏼
Bono looks great in this. I love his outfit and his facial hair.
i don’t really like the short hair in my opinion rattle and hum achtung baby and early 2000s era bono was the best
Minus his Fidel Castro get up. Not too wise to wear that in and around Miami...LOL...
@@abcun17 lol
Another revolutionary album, after Achtung Baby and Zooropa. Brilliant
Indeed, POP really does complete the Holy Trinity of U2 in the 90s. We never knew we had it so good back then. Twenty five years later - now we know!
My favorites too
Space Oddity type of vibe musically. Criminally underrated song
my heart beats to the rhythm of U2's songs
Hello, how are you doing it’s nice meeting you here.
Bono was pure bad ass in 1997 😃
This song gives me real summer vibes. ☀️🌡😎🏖🏝
I was 26 when POP landed. Nice memories 🔥
Me too

Can we just appreciate The Edge without his signature cap.
Yep. He looks like a bad ass villain straight out of "Scarface"!
@@abcun17 haha he does, but love his looks here, Bumble Bity, I agree !!
Really love seeing the guys like this especially Bono hamin' it up. Love his playful sense of humor 🎶💙🎶
Iconic video, at that time Bono and the guys were aged as I am now. That was the soundtrack of my teenage years.
Always loved this song. One of my all time top U2 songs. It's so simplistic, but I love the way it flows.
Bono fits in Miami, looks Cuban in this song, love the American umbrella to protect you from the sun
A cuban that worth close to one billion. lol
He knows perfectly how to be irriverent! I love him for his sarcasm mixed with a good deal of underplayed humor!❤⭐
B.no aka Panama papers
Once one of my favorite bands, now ...
He lacks a long beard to look like perfect Fidel Castro. But I like him dressed like this!
Прекрасный летний вайб с танцами Боно 😍💃
summer, 97, was warm
I wish that come back 90s U2. They were AMAZING❗❗
I always have tears in my eyes while listening to this song 😩
One of the bests acoustics songs by Greatest Rock Band of all time!
Best U2 clip ever
A great acoustic set at every concert I've attended.
U2 is legend 🤘🏼❤👍🏼
El real Madrid también. Salu2
BEST band of history.
I love U2, they make me very happy. :D
The Edge bought some new hair.
Looking good!
Luv this music!
My band ❤️🇧🇷
This is one of my favorite groups!
Here’s to the greatest band from North Dublin !!!!!!!
Confusing, I saw this year's ago.
No matter. This is fantastic and you can feel the mood of the day in the video.

I agree with your overall sentiment but I don't understand why this was 'dated " in 97.

junto con No Line es un album incomprendido
El no incluir a Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois fue algo que afecto el sonido que ellos buscaban.

The verse reminds me the chorus from Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz. *Windmill windmill for the land* :D
lol
true lol
Looks like they copied this song for inspiration
When they made feels good inc witch came out in 2005 this song from U2 came out at 1997
*The chorus from Feel Good Inc. reminds the verse of Staring At The Sun
Gorillaz "borrowed" the tune 😋
