Would using the vertex formula yield the same result, as opposed to taking the derivatives?
Yes, but that is the noob method.
Is there a way to do this w/o calculus? I learned this box problem in Algebra II.

Prime of X is just the derivative of f(x)
I quess this is one of those rare situations when you find a more accurate result by hand, rather than using a GDC.
