It's inevitable that you will experience pain at some point when learning the guitar. Pain in the left-hand thumb and wrist is usually created by a combination of over tensing your muscles, using new muscles that are not accustomed to being used, and not having the optimal positioning of your hand.
Here are some practical ways to solve this issue so you can get back to making beautiful music on the guitar.

Great advice! I'm learning to play without a teacher and I sometimes feel discouraged either by pain in my wrist or by how hard it is to play chords without muting strings accidentally. This video has great advice, but also gave me a boost of encouragement. Thank you!
Bar chords kill my thumb

Played Guitar For 40 Years,, Now At 67 Thumbs both Hurt and Shoulders ,,, Thanks For your Video Answers alot Of Question,, Im going to keep playing till Im 100 ;-)
Rock on James!
Older than you, JP! Heat while warming up and cold after playing for the pain. I just finished 4 weeks of thumb exercises from an Occupational Therapist / Fiddler and got great results. Couldn't play at all since Nov 2021! Thomas brings us all together!!
Thanks, Tomas, great tips, Play little but often. I'm 60 and learning guitar for the first time this year.
That's great Brian! You might want to check out my playlist for beginner chords. I have a bit of a unique way of teaching them that has worked really well: czcams.com/play/PL2fVuWCtWUdpsmzqpaNSM7H3f_dmtIG4h.html
It's a helpful video with lots of details, I just adjusted my wrist positon a month ago as you mentioned in this video and the adjustment made me feel better but I still have pain after exercising. I'm going to watch the following video, I believe it would be helpful to clear up my confusion.
Tomas, Thanks for this video. I have been thinking about putting the guitar down forever based on the fact that I have a joint issue in my thumb. This video helped me to understand that I can probably work through this instead! I was going to work through it anyway because I just didn't want to quit playing, but, you had some great tips here, reminding me to not practice too much! I played a lot when I was younger, and frankly I have the muscle memory from that, but I really don't play often enough to keep my muscle strength up to protect my hands, especially now with a thumb injury.
So slowing it down, practicing a bit less per session, but more often, is helping me to get back to where I once belonged!
Glad I could help, David.
OMG, I should've listened!! Slow! Now have thumb joint injury and plan to follow fine example and Tomas' wisdom. Trying to rely on thumb less now that it's out of a freaking splint! Left hand: Severe joint space narrowing with subchondral sclerosis and osteophytes in the first CMC joint.
@@MK-sc8md It is pretty amazing how bad a thumb joint injury hurts wen you try to play. But I will say, in the past few weeks, I have been working on three things.
1. Gentle stretching. In the past I was too rough and probably caused more injury.
2. Whole hand exercises. I purchased one of those flying saucer shaped gummy things. Has a bunch of holes in it and you can both extend and squeeze. Rolling it into odd shapes also helped, and I found the tender spots and was able to slowly strengthen.
3. Finger endurance exercises with the guitar. So these are when you essentially perform hammer ons in sequence one finger at a time starting with the index, then on to middle, ring, and pinky. Then hammer ons again from middle finger, to ring, to pinky. Then ring and pinky. Then back down. Do each set for 1 minute. Takes you about 8 minutes and you have done it all the way through. Then take a break, and begin your normal practice when you don't feel cramped up.
Following that procedure before each practice session has made 90% of the pain go away. It also prepares you for the session with a nice warm up.
@@DavidsHawkins Thank you! Great tips and encouragement! I'm of that "pushing-through-the-pain" and "feel the burn" mentality, so the setback is my own fault. All I CAN do now is exercises and warm-ups but it's better than "The End". CZcams has been an endless wealth of info and support but I'll wager an in-person instructor would've nipped it in the bud! Rock on!
@@DavidsHawkins Hey there, here's an update! A guitarist friend connected me to an Occupational Therapist (fiddle player) who "gets it". After only one month of specific stretching and strengthening exercises I'm FINALLY able to play again. I didn't believe that tendons and muscles could help compensate for bone injury / arthritis. Freakin' awesome!! Appreciate all the online support!
Thanks for this. I played a few things as a young guy but picked up the guitar again at 54 in order to finally master the damn thing đ. During that time i have had nickel allergy, broken wrist, broken thumb and im currently suffering terrible pain from the break healing. Im not giving up because ive made such an unbelievable progress and i finally know what the fretboard is. I actually feel cursed to never play guitar but hehe it drives me on. It was never like this in the past.
Oh and i once laughed at a guy who said to say "i will be a great guitarist" ten times before sleep. Heh im not saying anymore but im wondering if he was on to something. đ
Thank you this helps a lot. I have been dealing with this for so long it has caused permanent damage as i was just learning through youtube and figured pain was normal. Looked it up and found this. this should help prevent further damage.
Thank you very much for this friendly and complete video. IÂŽve been playing ukelele for 2 years and IÂŽm experiencing pain for the first time. I would like to find the link on the video about hand positioning
Tomas, thank you so much for this video. I was having pain with a particular exercise and this is exactly what I needed to solve the problem.
Glad it helped Shulamit!
Ty Good Advice is Priceless
Thanks for the tips and insight. They've been very useful.
Glad it was helpful Johnny!
Thank you Tomas! As soon as my thumb hurt from playing all barred chords, I googled and found your video! The pain is relieved after that stretching exercise of yours!! Good day Tomas! Subscribed :)
Glad it helped Jennifer.
Thank you sir
Thank you
Great tips Thomas, thanks so much! đđ»
My pleasure Emiline!
I just got a new guitar and still new at playing it and the last string is a bit bigger than the 2 last one can I just switched it or do I need to replace it with a new one
I will watch more and I did subscribe. My left thumb where it connects to the wrist (or bottom joint) I think is the spot that hurts
badly. I was over playing (study) and so on working on several techniques and also I had a sprain where a gate pulled at it... and
now it has been weeks and a few months. I will try some of these ... I am 69 now and still working active (mechanizing etc) ... and
may have to see if there is some other treatment. I don't do drugs and into very good quality foods.
Agreed with you about the different body shape. For many year I was uncomfortable with trying the standard posture before realizing I had to adjust.
Thanks for commenting, C Lam.
Leaving a comment because you seem like a great dude. I found this video because I am 38 and recently started having pain in my left thumb after playing for just a little while. It hurts to the point where I actually have to take breaks while fiddling around. I am hoping some of these stretches you suggested will help me out. Getting older is a bummer.
Thanks for commenting Paul. I can relate to the "getting older" part. Nothing to do but keep plugging away :)
This is very helpful! Thank u for the tips!
You're so welcome!
thanks for this video and for your compassion! :)
My pleasure!
I'm not a pro but been playing for 5+ years.. randomly, past three months: I tend to get left thumb pain from doing the easiest things I could always do for an embarassingly short time...
I'll try your exercises.I' m older been playing guitar a long time, need to walk away sometimes even when you have new tune in your head. Thanks will look into different exercises.
great!
Nice video! Do you normally play with a straighter wrist? I remember in your bar chord video, you suggested dropping the wrist down to hold the string down firmer.
Hi Peter... more on barre chords, less for other chords.
I couldn't find the link to the proper hold video, here is the title I found helpful: "#tomasmichaud Guitar Chords Left Hand Position"
thank you so much
You're welcome!
Dunno if your videos but your way of explaining things is great
I appreciate that John!
Hi Tomas. Iâm a professional musician and recently experienced pain in left thumb due to excessive use and possibly over tension during Classical guitar practice. I play 2 to 4 hours a day. Positioning is so important. This reminded me of the importance of stretching. Thanks so much for this! I love the thumb stretching exercise at end of video. I didnât see link to more stretches. Could you send that? I do a few but would love to try more.
Hi check out this other video I did for more exercises. czcams.com/video/__VjRUO4o2M/video.html
It helped alot.. thank you
Glad it helped Youstina!
thank you for this!
You're so welcome Paulo!
As Iâve got older its like my left thumb has lost padding and it feels like itâs bone pressing on the back neck of the guitar. Sometimes feels like a shock. Iâve tried a glove or taping some gauze around for padding but that feels awkward. Anyone here have an issue like that? Iâve been playing for years now for certain chords or positions I donât even want to try.
Found this because Iâm having thumb pain (up the back of my wrist) in my fretting hand. Iâm going to start doing the stretches, but Iâm not sure what you mean by pull the thumb ⊠down towards the floor? Back toward the body? Your channel looks great so Iâve subscribed! Thank you!
Welcome aboard Lindsay. I'm glad to have you as a part of my music community.
thank you so much :)
You're welcome!
Thanks man
You're welcome!
My left thumb hurts like hell but I play tenor sax not guitar. Wrong video. Thanks anyway.
Sorry to hear that
@@TomasMichaud It's all better now. I was overdoing it. Cheers !
My ques is do slap.players suffer long term damage to thumbs?
