VW Touran No Crank No Start ECU no COM Diagnose Dan TSB for the Win

- 2018 Vw touran customer complaint lots of warning lights on the dash in the morning then after 15min the warning lights would go away and the vehicle was good for the day. It had been to 2 other shops and the VW main dealer with no success so in my view quite a tricky problem to trace being so intermittent .
Now when he brought the vehicle over for some brake pads and new glow plugs I scanned the vehicle for some history codes and pretty much all I saw was a bunch of no communication codes and no communication with ECM PCM ECU , but at this point everything was working fine no warnings on the dash .
Finish the jobs drove the vehicle outside then when the customer friend came to pick up the car it didn't start and I saw for the first all the warnings on the dash, scanned the vehicle for code again and noticed no communication with the ecu .
You guys probably noticed I like to generally test system straight at the component but in this case the ecu module had one those cages and some security bolts , that's when I decided to check out @Diagnosedan TSB where it proved very useful in this case, I found a TSB for a common faulty VW 645 relay which I believe is basically terminal 30 relay for some circuits.

Thank you for providing DDTSB it has proven crucial in quite few occasions . The owner was very happy indeed and couldn’t actually believe the vehicle was fixed , he asked me 4 times if the vehicle was really fixed before he paid me 😊 because not even the main dealer could find the issue 👍

Hey man, i cant find any words to thank you for your Service! I ve had the same Problem with my 2017 Octavia 3 (5e5) and every Workshop had different solutions to fix that but nothing seemed to be logic or makes sense for me. I tested your solution and i ve found the Problem. The Car battery was changed for 140€ and the Problem was still there. My Car has the dq250 dsg gearbox and the Infotainment said "Gearbox Error" and all of your Errors, so the next Car Workshop would Check the Gearbox electronic for a huge amount of Money. Another Workshop had the plan to replace the alternator for quite 400€.
Now i could solve the Problem by replacing a Relais for 14€ 🙈

Another nice video….The reason for the anti-tamper shear off bolts is to make it more difficult for tuning companies in Germany (car will fail TUV) to access the ecu for flashing directly on the board bypassing the factory OBD flash security (which most can do anyway now, that is why we now have a notification within 30 seconds of the car being connected to the factory system 42 FAZIT server if the power has been enhanced both via proper map or tuning box).
Those 645 relays have been revised to reduce this happening now, if you got it from TPS, you will get the latest version, if you got it from an aftermarket supplier, chances are they bought up the old stock.
I always fit relays and sensors from TPS to avoid comebacks which disappoint the customer and costs you time/money in the long run.

Hiya mate , I use it on a regular basis I wish I would find more useful TSB’s related to the vehicles that I’m working on but when you find it’s an absolutely gem , regarding overall information about components and operation it’s actually great 👍

Do u have a practice of autoscan before u touch the vehicle and do anything. I personally find this very useful and helpful innquestional situation. I dont do cars full time,my job is retrofit service. As a golden rule I scan the car/van and send it to the customer (WhatsApp) before I do anything. Every now and then I am able to show the customer that some of the faults can affect the item I retrofit. As u well aware many times is tricky to explain is not related to your job.

I tend to do a pre repair auto scan and save it as a pdf file then a post repair , then pass it on to the customer when I invoice them explaining everything that was done . For some reason I still spend half hour answering customer question 😊 , this Touran customer couldn’t believe it was fixed because no one could find the problem not even main dealer . I have a similar issue with my 2011 1.4 Eos, do you know if it would be the same relay?
I have a skoda octavia 1.6 with DSG 7 ghearbox and i have the same problem. If i let the car rest the problem disapers only for some time and then comes agani. I hope to be this relley 🙏🤝

Plenty useful information about components … regarding useful TSB’s I was only able to find a couple times for the vehicles I was working on but when you come across a related TSB it’s like striking gold … cheap enough to have for a year at least 👍
good job igor and just unlucky it had to act up just after your jobs done. i get atot of these " only started after you done it" for example after changing wheel bearing abs light comes on ... nothing to with our work but like vw use cheap plastic parts that rot and break easy and bad quality wire that breaks when moving loom around..😆
Oh no It started acting up a couple weeks before I worked on the car , he is a new customer and I’ve got the impression he was happy with the jobs … 👍 cheers

Had a no crank on my 2013 Passat, firstly the starter was replaced as it was defective. The system has two relays in series which are R1 and R6 under the main engine fuse box. R1 was not receiving its ground signal from the ECU. Replaced the relay as a matter of course and did a full cap discharge of the ECU now fully functional. Hope this can help others.
