    Stunning mini van. My first car was a grey mini van, that I bought for £30! I also happen to be a wheelchair user too now. I remember the rear door would unlatch if I went over a bump or similar, and then you could hear the exhaust and the lovely over run…although it would also slowly fill with fumes. A previous owner had put a bench seat in the back of it. Did a lot of miles in that car and it was a huge amount of fun. It was bought cheap because the rear subframe was broken, but we copied a Monte Carlo trick, where we rolled the van over, not into a snow drift as they did on the rally, but onto a pile of loose straw. Also put a Cooper engine in it eventually (friend wrote his Cooper off, and we managed to do an engine swap before it was scrapped…but we never changed the speedo…

    Nice to see you're back and in good health. The van is looking good. With regards to the paint I would have applied more coats than needed then 'knocked it back' but you seem to have solved the problem now. BTW that is what we used to do when using solid coulors on custom cars. Anyway thanks Alex for the update and a brief video of the show would be great. I know from experience that filming a video can be time consuming and you don't then get to see what you went there for so bear that in mind. Take care. 👍

    Feckin brilliant to see the mini van in the spot light again, looking mint as usual! Be great to see more van video's and a Bingley Hall video too! I'd be along to Bingley myself but I'm in Australia..
    I definitely hear what you are saying with repro parts! Especially annoying when they break within days of fitting them, after waiting weeks for them to arrive! I'm the proud owner of a '77 Mini clubman van among several other British Leyland products and folk can say what they like about BL's reliability issues of their time but I find the original components last longer than the modern counterparts and if the originals can be repaired they'll often replace the replacements!

  • @davidartina5022
    @davidartina5022 Před 2 lety +3

    To me, being old enough to remember them from new, it needs original raised style reflective number plates. Nothing after 1970 had black number plates and it just looks wrong! Everything else you do is spot on and you are so right about crap new parts

    • @classicminidetails8887
      @classicminidetails8887  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah I've seen those style plates. I just can't see it working with the grey so I stuck with black. I know my Mk3 S plates should be that style

    • @davidartina5022
      @davidartina5022 Před 2 lety +1

      @@classicminidetails8887 Try them! Leaving aside the correctness I think a splash of colour front and black will really lift it and look good, but they need to be the raised letter sort ideally aluminium which are more difficult to find. The modern totally flat sort would be wrong! Some of the guys with MK1 golfs are fitting the reflective raised sort, they were used until the early 80s

    • @amcr3556
      @amcr3556 Před 2 lety

      Cars pre 1973 could use black number plates. My 1972 Mini 1000 was one of the last to have these fitted as standard. I could have paid more foe reflective plates but realised that the black plates would become a less common sight on the road.

    Sadly many of the UK Mini parts suppliers are happy to peddle low quality components without bothering to mention it or even indicating where this rubbish is actually made. During my recent restoration I had trouble with several items from Mini Spares but their stock response seems to be to blame the customer. "Nobody else is having trouble with this part, Sir." The worst problems have been with rubber components - window seals and suspension cones in particular. They either don't fit, are too stiff, too inconsistent or deteriorate far too quickly. That's my little rant over! Hope to see you and the van at Bingley Hall. Oh, and if it helps, my engine has an oil leak despite changing all the seals and gaskets...

    Great catch up, the van looks immaculate, credit to you. Loving the Cooper boot as wall art. I know what you mean about oil leaks, my MX5 has a leak, but engine out fix not worth the aggro, does not affect oil level & does not leak if used daily, so tin foil drip tray with wood pellet cat litter & I try not to kick it !

    It certainly looks very smart and you've done a really great job. However personally I certainly wouldn't have fitted that newer speedo binnacle, it looks so wrong on a van. It should have just the speedo,? a white one and I wouldn't ever consider anything but the standard engine, however each to his own after all it's your vehicle. Just one comment re that rattling bonnet, the spring on the fastener is adjustable so that you can lstop this.

    My first car was an 850 Mini van, it was not quite as good as this one, but it was alright, they are surprisingly roomy inside, not much grunt from the 850, it did not really want to go over 50mph, Poor breathing on the engine does not help!, good fuel economy.
    British cars/motorbikes ( older ones ) always leave their little calling card on the ground,
    ha ha. Nice tidy van! Change your valve seats for unleaded fuel, if you have not already, so you do not gradually loss compression.

    I am posting this in addition to my previous comment. I just wanted to say The Consumer Rights Act is a very important and useful piece of legislation to have when complaining. If more people knew their rights then companies could not just shrug their shoulders. Forums can help, if enough people say 'this item is junk' then that can boost your case although hearsay will not stand up in court a Judge will take it into account. There are sources of information online Citizens advice for example. You shouldn't be rude when complaining just state your case. One more point only use official sites and not someone's opinion. Hope that isn't too boring but some companies seem to think the law doesn't apply to them.👍
