  • Winter is when my cactus are having their annual rest period. This is the best time for me to do some greenhouse/garden housekeeping tasks that I find hard to squeeze in during spring or summer. This video shows my plans for this winter of 2020 and some of them are in preparation for the upcoming blooming season in spring and summer.

    Oh wow you showed my card. Thank you. I'm always so happy to see my stuff in others' pics or videos. You get a sense of how they have traveled so far. I ordered these plastic labels that are thick and I tape labels on them. I don't know how this will work long term but I have a good feeling about it. Plus the labels are colorful. I should take the pups off a cactus I just got. I just found out I got one called Lady Finger. it has like 10 pups. EDIT: OH I forgot to say I'm so glad you like Minion my budgie. I named him after Minion the fish gorilla from Megamind. I never expected he'd be such a great talker. I hope to have a new video of his up tonight or tomorrow morning.

    I have some really excellent white plastic waterproof plant markers and I have an unlimited supply because they are made out of laminate. They are basically off cuts of these things that my husband has to make at work. They can also be cut down to whatever size if you need shorter or longer. I will try to talk about them and show you in my next video if you check out my channel. Also, if you write on them with a sharpie, you can wipe it off with regular old rubbing alcohol. They never break!

    The white stuff on your terracotta pot isn’t mould. It’s just calcium and other minerals from water and fertilisers wicking to the outside of the porous terracotta. It won’t do any harm at all to your plants. You can remove it for aesthetic reasons (if you don’t like the look of it) but there’s no need to remove it for plant health. Some people actually seek out and prefer this ‘patina’ or look for their terracotta pots.

    Hella Ana, nice video very helpfull thank. The white that appears on terracotta pots is calcium and other minerals that comes from water or in fertiliser. All though its unsightly and I hate it my self in not harmful to the plant. 🌵🎋

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 4 lety

      Sometimes it is mineral deposit. But the one I showed in the video is mold. I usually get the mineral deposit problem with my seedlings and I hate it too. But it is too costly to be buying distilled or bottled water all the time. 😕 And we hardly get rain here in Las Vegas. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! 😃🌵☕️

I have been trying my hand at different varieties of cactus, I have lost many sadly from not really having the proper education on them. I am so glad I found you !! I have one quick question, and I am sorry if you have discussed this already, but if I may ask.... Do you water them at all in the winter? My round cactus's are only about 1 1/2 years old, (about the size of a small lemon, lol ) and I have removed many pups from my Barrel Cactus, and I have one columnar cactus that is about 13 inches tall. I think I have read so much literature that I am confused... Should I just leave them alone? Thank you so very kindly for your opinion in advance !! Blessings to you !

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 4 lety

      Repotting is done best during warmer and drier days. It just minimizes root rot which usually happens when it is wet and/or cold. Although I repot any time of the year with extra caution. 😉 During winter I keep them dry but give them a little sip of water only when they are looking too shriveled. I’m talking about desert cacti of course. Tropical cacti winter care are different. 🙂

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you for bringing this up. I realized I failed to explain that. 🙂 As much as possible, we do not want to disturb a cactus when it is resting. Root breakage, which can happen during repotting, can lead to root rot when the soil is damp and cold. On the other hand, repotting can also encourage a cactus to grow when it is supposed to be resting. Without adequate light and water in winter, it may cause stretching. 🌵☕️
