MACH LOOP STAR WARS CANYON AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHY

- As I’d been requested so many times on previous uploads it was time to put together a video showing my camera settings for the still shots. The photos have been shot over the last three years so a number of cameras have been used. The earlier photos with my faithful Canon 7d2 to my current Canon 1DX2. I did use a Canon 5D3 for a short period but missed the rapid shutter rate of the 7D2. My lens has pretty much been the same one for the last 4 years. I use a 300mm f2.8 for most all my low level aviation photos an interchange camera bodies from full frame to crop according to how close I think I may get to a plane and the type/size of plane. A 1.4 extender I find is an useful accessory for small or further away subjects
For the videography I use two cameras. Firstly I use a Panasonic VX870 (4K) which is mounted to me lens. I appreciate I have had some comments about the shutter noise (clicking) on my videos from this. The second camera I use is a Panasonic VX980 (4K), I mount this on a tripod and try and capture some fixed shots of incoming aircraft. Occasionally I’ll get some tidy footage if the planes fly through my viewfinder. Failing that I’ll get the audio with reduced shutter noise. Win win 😎.
Feel free to comment with any questions and I’ll try my best to answer them.

Lived on a carrier for 4 years. NEVER got tired of watching flight ops, hearing the cat in im rack, and jet noise. Just amazing! Fortunate to have good leadership and brothers there too.
In the USAF, I would sometimes watch air operations to see what other aircraft would fly in.
@@randybaumery5090 Same, even in my barracks while stationed at shore Navy bases (Oceana/Lemoore/Mirimar/Fallon) I'd always stop and just watch the approach. I was a hard partying young airman , but I've always loved watching any aircraft do it's thing on the flightdeck or land..
I could literally watch these videos all day long and not get bored with it
F-18, AC-130, a freaking Osprey...
This is like a movie featuring legendary actors You've never seen together before!
You never cease to amaze me, I sit there watching your stuff with a big smile on my face!!
Oh snap! What a shot of the F-35 with the afterburners! That's a keeper...wall size prints!
The vista of the "Star Wars Canyon" are spectacular! The depth is stunning!
The Typhon is Badass!
I love the whistling of the A-10 as it fly's overhead!
Thanks Guys and Girls!
Thanx!,Karita.
What skills these pilots have ,what skills this photographer has . Thank you .

Truly stunning, thanks for sharing this with us. The GR-4 still make me smile
At 34 watching these still gives me Goose bumps! Amazing!
Wish I was a fighter pilot, almost more than anything in the world.
The shot l like is 1:22 with the boy's sitting on the tailgate hanging out.
THAT is poster material!
You notice it was the USAF C130 with boys on the ramp, not Her Majesty's C130. Yet, the RAF boys're probably crazy enough to do that while hanging _from_ the ramp.
No real news. It is often as it is. No real news.
All I can say is incredible photography. Truly wonderful stuff, i remember my times flying the loop with fondness. Great to see it from outside the cockpit of my Tornado. Wow!
Thanks you,, Must of been great times in the hills. ✈️✈️✈️
I keep coming back. Your photography and videos are absolutely stunning. Every one gives me goosebumps. I can’t imagine being there but I’m sure it’s an amazing experience every time. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you
Appreciate you watching the vids
There’s nothing better than the sound of a military jet or helicopter flying over your ranch! Love it🇺🇸
2:52 FLT LT A Mallery-Blythe cool as you like taking in the sights and photographers whilst hammering along through Mach loop
Love the drop in/out style for giving the camera settings
Brilliant and thank you. Love the sound of the A10, nothing quite like it. 😉
Love the Howling Typhoon.
The guys in the back of the C130, just chilling. 👍👍👍😎😎😎
Absolument magnifique! Quelle qualité d'images! Félicitation! Réellement spectaculaire et très intéressant! Merci
Loving the new style, settings info on those stunning shots is also a welcome addition, looking forward to your next video!
Love that sound the engines on the A10's make
@@user-jr6le1uq5t you know the burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpppppp of freedom sounds badass too from the A-10
jackelracer593 BRRRRRRRTTTT 😄
It's a close approximation to the whine from an F-4!
This is why you guys are number 1 . The best of the best . You save our lives . God. Bless .
Absolutely stunning photography and flying. Thanks for putting these together.
I love how those jets sound like they're ripping the air apart! and the crew peeking out the back of the C-130 was a laugh :P
THEY ARE RIPPING THE AIR APART 😊
Thanks for sharing. Never gets old. At 8:00, the back seater giving horns up was awesome. Thanks for sharing the still shooting specs too. Keep em coming. Semper Fi
I like the shot of the A-10 driver looking right at them at 7:28.
Nice flying and GREAT photos! Very decent of you to document the Mach loop. Thank you. Many years ago flew it at a crappy110kts BUT at 50ft, not 450. Instructor in back to make sure we did not hurt ourselves. Super fun! CAVU skies to aviator enthousiasts.
What I love is the pilots looking at you! And the guys hanging out the rear practically waving! Truly awesome shots!
Thank you 😎
I could watch this all day. Epic shots as always. Thank you for sharing 👌❤
Thanks for watching.
Appreciate 😎👍
@@DafyddPhillips You're the best 👍
@@DafyddPhillips do you get pilots contacting you for photos?
Great freaking work! I love Star Wars Canyon!
Yes occasionally the pilots get in contact for photos. Matching up a photo to a pilot is better than selling a photo. ✈️👍
@@DafyddPhillips That is AWESOME! Thanks for responding, truly do appreciate it...but you know who else appreciates your photos (and videos) more, the pilots!
🤜🤛👍
I live next to an Air Force base, and there are drills going on almost every week. its so cool that there the planes pass by REALLY close. amazing how u took the vid.
Unmistakable sound of the A-10! Gotta love it!
As a not good photographer, these still photos practically bring a tear to my eye. Thank you so much for this channel.
Thank you. Appreciate your kind words.
7:59 back sit pilot goes "Rock & Roll BABY!!!" - awesome shot!
F18's saved my ass a few times in Iraq, show of force alone can put the fear of God into enemy combatants, F-22 Raptor is my favorite though, excellent footage, amazing!
I could watch this all day long..!! Magnificent photos and roaring thunder sounding beauty for our ears, so once again: thanks so much for sharing this to us civilians. Cheers from Denmark
Happy you enjoyed.
takker dig 👍
@@DafyddPhillips Du er såååå velkommen ;-) (most welcome). I need to be in one of these places in the near future (a dream come true). Cheers
Every time I get a notification that you put up another video I know im in for another great ride. Im with Krichek on the A-10 and Osprey's. 3 Ospreys flew over my house at about 300 feet leaving a airshow here in AZ last week. Boy all of us cannot thank you enough for sharing your passion of aircraft and photography . A book of stiils would be the topping on the cake for all of your fans. Hint Hint!
brttt..brtttt..brttt that dslr sound is killing me..the image result is stunning..thanks.for shsring this image setup.
😈
plus 1. I hate it
@@davidleong4289 África
Without the sound, this would be boring :-) It's exactly the sound of these planes, that makes it so great to watch/hear.
Hey, Doc..Most of us love that sound..you should see a Doc..
Intense action! I love your still shots, the quality is so great I can see the sheep mowing grass in the background haha.
Another great video! The editing was amazing and the still shots of the Jets were INSANE! Love it!
Nice! I grew up on west coast of Vancouver island in Tahsis it was at the head of a inlet that became a valley which cut across the island. Comox air base is on east side. In the 70's the jet's used the inlet as a flight path to do bomb runs on the mill ect. One day l was on a pier about 12 feet above ocean about to jump when l heard a low roar, turned my head an a jet at my height was headed straight at me (there was a tin shed behind me) on a run all l could see was a canopy with wings. He banked slightly and went by at eye level about 50 feet away head turned looking at me. Then pulled up hit the burners and climbed out of sight. Your pictures are as clear as that memory is in my head.
Unfortunately a few years later a meddling house wife called the base because her house shook, move out of town lady, and that was the end of air show's. Bitch.
When you can clearly see the shoe laces of the pilot that's a truly stunning photograph. Well done.
tobortine thank you. higher res shot here on my Flickr page

That A-10 was the coolest jet of em all👌🏽
There is something primal about the look and sound of the A-10, the sound always makes me smile.
Oh wow! The clarity of this video. Outstanding!
Words?! To describe?! "AMAIZING........!" Man the sound, the shots it's a great job even my wife who doesn't like military planes was impress.........! 🙂
Being far too old now to ever be considered for getting seat time outside of some crazy private venture, this channel is far and away the best place to come for getting that up close and personal feel, aside from whatever happens to be flying over the house. =) My continued thanks for doing what cha' do time and again!
If you have money and time you can still get seat time out of Cape Town Airport fighter jets.
Slightly choked-up. Beaitiful.
Absolutely spectacular!..well done!...what a great place to be!👍🏻👍🏻
That A10 sound is very familiar. They used to regularly fly around over Cheadle, Staffordshire in the '80's and '90's.
This photography is incredible!
Thank you, appreciate you watching
I definitely feel that Pilots should start commenting on here, I know you guys and girls watch CZcams and you can't deny that the videos and pictures are fantastic.
Oh Brilliant thanks for the response..... I hope the Jet Pilots are thinking what to type in the comment section 😉
They're simply stunning !!!
Im sure fighter pilots are too busy lol. On days they fly it is normal to have a 12 hour work day. Pre-flight brief, gear up, pre-flight inspection, talk to ATC taxi out, fly refuel, fly refuel, fly refuel, debrief. Haha
@@cameronmchugh4153 well we'll see which Pilot drops a line first, I've already had a Helicopter Pilot commented so it looks promising cheers.
@@mmnm8540 cool, I do wish more fighter pilots made youtube videos. The only person I know is C.W lemoine.
Love the segment of the F22. I used to work across the street from Dobbin ARB when they were doing flight tests of the F22 there in the mid 2000s. It was like a free air show two to three days a week for a few years.
Formidable.... et didactique... et simplement beau. Merci pour tout ce travail.
If they were'nt wearing visors you could certainly see the whites of the pilots eyes! Incredible images Dafydd....
Amazing shots! 7:28 - My favorite.
Had an Osprey fly over me at Coos Bay Oregon ... what an odd plane to see in flight up close....... but really cool. Thanks for the super shots .
THANKS - another great job!
you had ALL my favs in one video... and the camera settings too - - WOW!!!
Thank you 😎👍
I wood of guessed the shutter speeds to be faster, Thanks for showing that info for wannabe shutter bugs, Fantastic stills.
Gerald Balciar Jr higher f-stops let in less light, so you can have slower shutter speeds and still get motion blur without overexposing your shot
"wood of guessed" fucking hell mate
Awesome! The pictures are phenoms! Makes me want to call up my high school photography teacher so he can give some more insight on my cameras capabilities.
yeah you're right these pictures are really good most of the time people are really shaky and miss the whole thing lol
Sheer pleasure to watch. Thanks to you and the pilots.

@@DafyddPhillips back in 2000 I was backpacking over there in the UK. Worked in a pub in the Yorkshire Moore's. Whenever I had the chance I would go to the top of the old mines and sit on the edge and watch jet planes going flat out sometimes in dog fights nearly 20 years on I still remember it like it was yesterday. I'm going to get back over there 1 day and try and do the Mach loop. When is the best time of the year to do this?? Cheers and Beers!! From Australia 🤙🏽🍻

After watching the F-35 you really get a good perspective about the tic-tac ufo and how mind blowing it is that it made higher g turns and speeds than the best we can come up with.I need to know what that thing was it keeps me up at night.
A palavra que resume o vídeo e as imagens é PERFEIÇÃO!
8:13 glorious Falcon
Great imagery Daf, one of these days I’ll get to Mach loop, grew up in Brecon Wales, loved seeing all the aircraft flying through, keep up the great work

Great images. This totally reminds me of a time I took a friend on a road trip to the middle of Nevada to check out ghost towns and sight see. One night we camped 20 miles from the only town for about 60 miles and ten miles from the nearest lonely paved road. I was awoken at the crack of dawn by jet engines screaming by. I figured we're in Nevada so just some military jets flying by, REALLY close for some reason, and tried to keep sleeping. Then they came back, and I figured I missed them. They came back again. I kept thinking that if I crawled out of bed they'd be gone. But they kept coming so I got up to two F-18's (I think) flying only 100-150 from the ground directly over our heads. We were camped at the mouth of a canyon where it meets a very broad sloping valley around 6K ft elevation. Up the canyon the mountains were 11K ft in only 5 miles. The two jets were playing chase up and down the canyon bending around a sharp turn up the canyon. Down the canyon they would suddenly go straight up several thousand feet over the valley and mach dogfight. Then they'd swoop down low and up the canyon at incredible speed and swoop around the bends of the canyon and do it again, and again. It was amazing. It still gives me goosebumps. I thought we would only see critters and enjoy total solitude that morning, but was treated to this spectacle. To be frank, it was much more awesome than what they're doing in this video. Later, I kept thinking we were going to be hounded by a ranger for not paying for the entertainment. But it was free. It still amazes me years later.
One of your best so far😎
Thank you 😊
@@DafyddPhillips One of your pictures states the aperture as f4.0 but the depth of field is uncanny, like its f8 or f16. Amazing photographs and much respect. Thanks.
