On The Job - Baulko Recycle

  • A while ago I posted a long video of my old truck SL31 back at the Randwick/SITA contract, which was based on a garbage run and featured a 2007 MJE/ACCO. This is another long video, but taken on the job in the The Hills/Cleanaway contract while collecting recycling with a 2007 SPAK/ACCO. Funnily enough I never knew these specific side loaders existed when I first visited The Hills for videos, only finding out in 2011 that the recycle trucks were single axles instead of the bogies I expected. It also wasn’t until April this year that I finally got one on video, but I’ve since gotten behind the wheel of them myself and captured more footage to be seen shortly!
    I’ve always wanted to drive these Baulkham Hills trucks, firstly because they look mean and sound good, but secondly it’s an older Raptor generation and not a model found everywhere. Before coming to Cleanaway I’d only taken two Superior Paks out on the run, one of which was that SL84 featured in another video, so I’ve been curious to try out more of their equipment. Well I’ve been very happy to tick something off my bucket list after operating more than a dozen of these Baulko machines, giving me plenty of opportunity to see what these models can do. I’m definitely a big fan of this Raptor design and it’s been a big contrast from what I’ve used in the past.
    One of my favourite things about these particular bodies is the fewer sensor restrictions, for example the ability to use unload functions in gear, start moving the arm coming up to a bin and being able to accelerate the truck forward while cycling the lifter. Also love the simpler pendulum packer which dominates handling garbage, but it can struggle to keep up with high flows of recycling and large cardboard. It’s an awesome change going to the thin grabbers too, making close combat around other bins and obstacles a breeze. What I really dig about a lot of the lifters is the awesome scooping ability, with good arm and grab timing to swiftly snatch bins off the kerb in one simultaneous motion (although I need to show it better).
    To the video, what’s included is quite similar to what was featured in my Randwick upload, given some different angles and camera mounts. I’ll also note two different trucks feature in this video, although 550 is the main star, with 548 only appearing three times. As for that exhaust shot, forgive the shakiness, as the side mirror assemblies I tried on weren’t tight to remain still - I flicked on the exhaust brakes for entertainment too. These 4x2s are rippers to fly around in and fantastic in cul-de-sacs... has been great to finally try out a single axle SL. Another thing about these trucks is that they’re still full of life and go hard, seeing that they’ve hauled only small loads of light recycling during their years.

    Handy to know how to pick up empty bin that falls over after putting down 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Love how at the start you just forced the car out of the drive way. Nice video mate. Enjoyed every second of it.

    Haha, I love how that Corolla at the beginning got outta your way... nope I ain't going head on with a garbage truck. Nice work again as usual. Aren't you wary of getting your camera nicked when you set it up like you do?

      I was originally spewing that car rocked up, because I thought it was going to ruin the clip, but all turned out ok in the end... I saw the funny side after watching it back too :D Oh yes it does go through my mind a lot when I leave the camera behind like that or disappear for a couple of minutes, but I wonder what the chance is someone will do a runner with it. Who knows how many people see me set it up and run off, probably thinking WTF?! That's the disadvantage of not having a helper to mind the camera during my absences, but it's a risk I take and one I've taken numerous times in the past. I'll go back to vetch the camera one day and it'll be gone..... "AH SHIT!!!"

    Yooooo! Sick stuff man! Got the real deal now aye? More authentic me thinks! Older G can design with the unique engine. I would rather drive this than Randwick! Spokes and all. Neat truck and goes nice for a single axle. Probs the last fleet apart from Penrith with these 07 Accos. Can't wait for more in the future. Deffs a fav and like.

      Ohhh you bloody bet ya, this is the kind of 07 ACCO I've been hanging out for... more authentic is definitely correct. Mad thing is I've driven both GenVs and Raptors with the old G series over at Cleanaway too ;) It's basically the same stuff inside both cabs, but knowing these ones look a whole lot meaner is the big difference! haha I do wish the old beast back at Randwick was a 2350G so it was the full badass package, but can't have it all unfortunately. Yep you're right too, Penrith is the only other place with these, got none as FLs and might just be that Doyle Bros JP5 :S Damn Iveco and their facelifts!

    Oh Mitch mate good to see you working with all kinds of models, from hinos to GenVs and now raptors!! Great work mate!! Have two questions... So what contractor are you working for currently? Also I think I know how to operate the joystick on side loaders.. now listen I have no experience what so ever with operating such trucks so I'm only guessing... correct me if I'm wrong.. left makes the arm go out... forward makes the arm go down... moving the joystick backwards makes the arm go up and moving it to the right makes it go inwards... also moving the stick in between left and forward makes the arm go outwards and down at the same time.... moving it in between right and forward makes it go down and inwards when finishing a bin... moving the joystick in between backwards and outwards makes it go outwards and upwards... that works with fixing a bin that has fallen over... and moving the stick in between right and backwards makes it go inwards and upwards. Ok that was difficult to say lol..... correct me :)

      Still currently working at Cleanaway, been in the Hornsby contract for almost a year now. Your understanding of the joystick operation is absolutely spot on, you nailed it mate! =]

    I loved the first shot. Lol Camry vs Iveco, looks like the camry pussied out.
    Pro? I must say you have that veteran drivers touch already.
    One question I've always had with most of the Aussie automated arms is what makes the arm go up before going out is that just a feature when reaching the arm? or do you actually have to make the arm go up and out on the joystick that is.
    Is this rig running on regular diesel or bio? Great exaust shots too. :)
    Fantastic as always Mitch!

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 8 lety

      haha Yeh I liked that situation in the beginning, respect the heavy vehicles! Not a pro, but already a veteran instead, you're too kind Sean ;) The lift and slide functions operate independently from each other, it's all manual joystick operation over auto features. If you look at that in-cab shot in the fourth clip you might be able to match the lifter operation on the right monitor with the joystick movements - left and right will extend and retract the slide, up and down will raise and lower the arm. I think these run on normal diesel, but now I'm not actually sure, because I've seen the tanker deliver the fuel yet can't recall if it advertises biodiesel on the side :S Exhaust shot came out alright, the one in my "Randwick SL31" video was a shit load better though. Thanks for stopping by!

    How many bins an hour and day are you averaging 👍

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  Před 7 lety +3

      You probably saw how easy the pick-up is in the video, so you can imagine no less than 200/h :D Recycle on these trucks I was doing 1000-1100 a day. I do green-waste in another contract now which is similar with total bin lifts, but hourly rate drops a bit to maybe 170-190.

    How long until these trucks get replaced :(

  • @fingerbonebill1040
    @fingerbonebill1040 Před 4 lety

    The truck should swap prints with SL00045's (Don't trash our future) - But then it says "Garbage Service". Swap again, with SL00041 (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for today... and a better future). Then it says "Recycling Service". Problem solved.
