Jeremy Servicing "The Basin"

  • Today I got a look at what it takes to service two special jobs located within Ku-Ring-Gai National Park. There are two sites which get serviced daily during the holiday season, one known as "The Basin" and the other "Akuna Bay", which are both small and isolated holiday spots. Accessing both these areas requires a lengthy drive along tight, single-laned and windy roads through thick bush. Four 3m containers are located at both Akuna Bay and The Basin, all for mixed waste, which is taken back to the Doyle Bros MRF for sorting.
This video is based on the collections for The Basin, which is the furthest and most interesting of the two. I basically started to document the place when we crossed through the gate for the access road, just around the corner from where the video starts. You'll see there is no asphalt road, rather a rough dirt and rock track which gets worse as you get further into the place. The beginning of the approach is generally quite flat on reasonable ground as you'll see in the first clip, but further through things become very steep and rough as you'll see during the second clip.
Definitely a very dangerous area for a large truck to be travelling through; if something goes wrong things could get very nasty with this kind of terrain. The garbage has to get collected one way or another of course, but personally I think you should have a compact rear loader doing this kind of work. This is a real shit job when you consider the high risk factors of the area, the time it takes to do the handful of bins and the wear on the truck tyres, suspension, drivetrain, etc. It's very out of the way too.
You have Jeremy (Superiorpakfan) as the operator in this video, who started at Doyle Bros not too long ago. It's been a while since I posted any footage of this truck; nice to see and hear it in action again - gotta enjoy that mean Cummins sound! These days it is based mainly in a particular university, which explains the signage on the side, just required for this job as the regular truck wasn't available. I hope you enjoy what I threw together, was a little limited with camera angles and action variety when emptying the bins, but a good in-cab to show you the access track and a few driving shots mixed in too. Hopefully more to come of this truck again in the future and definitely more to come of Jeremy, but next time with his very young rear loader on the job in the Sydney CBD.

Nice work on the video Mitch. Nice work on driving and loading Jeremy. This truck sounds awesome as and I bet it sounds better in person. I would love to come up to Sydney one day and all the trucks you have up there. Like/Fav!!

The rear air bag suspension would be copping a smashing for sure. There goes the bin lifter at 15:32 haha. That is one heck of a dodgy area to be picking up bins!

Quite a big change of scenery. I think even a 4x2 acco or just one with a smaller wheel base would be pefect for the job. Needs plenty of power to get up those steep hills.

So, I have to admit Mitch, I loaded up this video on the computer and put my ear phones in, and noticed the girlfriend chuckling quite a bit. I asked her what she was laughing at, and said that in her dirty mind, she saw Jeremy Servicing "The Basin" and for whatever reason, an off roading trash truck adventure wasn't what came to mind. lol

Nice Mitch, the suspension on these Acco's isn't that crash hot is it, it's a real downer for them :-( In that respect Volvos and Scanias are unbeatable but the Acco will always be the first choice for me ;-). Any way nice watching Jeremy at work, the Doyal Bros trucks sure do look nice in the orange lively. Just a quick request could you many upload the Cessnock footage next week ;-). Cheers

You wouldn't get thrown around as much in a Volvo or Scania, but you'd still feel the impact with this kind of ground. Don't really think there was much suspension left on this truck - even worse on the passenger seat as there is no suspension at all =] Yep these trucks do look nice in the bright orange, they stand out a lot in the city. I'll keep a Cessnock video in mind for you.

Yeh you wouldn't get one of these trucks going down there when the ground is wet, I reckon you'd have quite a lot of trouble with traction. You'd probably end up skidding all the way down and on the way up the wheels would just be spinning! haha

haha good video, add a 10% more grading in the steep sections/ more potholes and bumps/ whole lot of tight curves were one dual may be in mid air/ 10 thinner with tress both sides and or rock walls and you have yourself a road similar to the ones in the shire of Niliumbik here in Victoria (mainly Nth Warrandyte/Kinglake and Smiths Gully) are the worst, Eltham/Diamond creek are just normal urban areas
