The Xoloitzcuintle, often referred to as Xolo, is a unique and ancient breed of dog with origins in Mexico. Known for its hairless appearance, this breed comes in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. With a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times, Xolos were considered sacred by the Aztecs and revered for their companionship and believed healing properties. Despite their lack of fur, these dogs are friendly, loyal, and make for affectionate pets.

The aztecs didn't have as much of a concept of inner beauty being expressed outwardly as the greeks did, it was often inverted actually, for example: Xochiquetzal, goddess of love and beauty was said to have cheated on her husband Tlaloc with Tezcatlipoca, who himself was the god of violence and chaos, famously known for his vitriol towards humanity, often described as taking the form of a brave, handsome young man, while his brother and opposite, Quetzalcoatl, father of humanity and generally a good guy (so much so that the christians actually just used his cult to establish Jesus 'cause they were so similar) was described as being so ugly he could only go outside while wearing a mask because the people *he made* would be terrified of him, Tlaloc himself too was described as having a face deformity, no Teotl was "perfect" in the greek sense.
The point is, the aztecs believed in duality, so it's fair to say that yes, Xolos are ugly, ugly and good and true and brilliant.

See this just shows me you're simple minded because beauty isn't good and ugliness isn't bad. They're just states of appearance in relation to the current beauty ideals. You don't have to be pretty to be a beautiful person. Straight teeth, clear skin, symmetrical features and shiny hair are all nice sure but they don't truly make someone beautiful. We all know people who aren't stereotypically attractive but are astoundingly beautiful adored people. Dogs are the same. Stop placing your weird idea that beauty = good and ugly = bad onto dogs lmao this dog isn't pretty and that's ok. He's not on this earth to be pretty, he's here to be a good boy.

They were actually bread to stay by sick people. Due to their lack of hair, they tend to be warmer to the touch than hairy dogs. Also, people that suffered from severe asthma where known to own one of this dogs back in pre colonized Mexico, supposedly they were able to stop an asthma attack when they saw the warning signs by sitting close to or on top of one’s chest. This notion stuck around after colonization and the rich noble people were known to keep them for the same reason. This breed of dog was the first service dogs if you think about it 😅

I was thinking similarly when reading the chupacabra comments.
A friend of mine had a beautiful black Ragdoll ~ literally one of the most gentle cat breeds ever (he was an indoor cat who accidentally got out). My friend found out later that someone had killed him because of his colour.😢💔
I have 2 coal black cats (my daughter thankfully saved~ someone had put them in a box & left them outside in the dead of winter). They’re indoor cats as well. If they did get out accidentally & someone hurt them I’d end up in jail if I knew who did it.
It’s too bad not all animals are like crows, tigers, elephants & some other animals. I’ve heard of several incidents of each exacting revenge on people who have brutally abused/killed them or their mates/family members. And in the cases of crows & elephants they’re known to do unbelievably wonderful things for people who treat them kindly, take care of them, etc…
People may not be so superstitious if a murder of crows swooped at them every time they left their home.😉

It's amazing how differently you see a dog breed after you get a good presentation of the dogs in particular, especially like this with live pictures of the dogs.
I've had a lesser known South American dog breed myself; Fila Brasileiro/ Brazilian mastiff. And she was my pride and joy and my very best friend ❤

Part of me has always wondered if ancient Egyptians and ancient Americans were in contact with one another, spit off from a much older civilization, or at least had cultural exchange at some point because a lot of little things overlap that wouldn't be expected to if they both developed entirely without any contact with each other.

@@_shadow_1You’d be surprised how many religions have a lot of similarities, personally I doubt that there was cultural/religious exchange as the only evidence we have of “Old World” people in the Americas pre-colonialism are Vikings in North America and it seems like they weren’t there for very long. Also, although Anubis and the dogs in Mesoamerican religions both deal with guiding the dead they seem to do so for different reasons. Anubis has a jackal head and jackals have an association with death because they’re scavengers, while in Mesoamerican mythology it would often be a dog that you knew in some way when you were alive that would guide you, so you had to be nice to dogs or no one would guide you (I can’t remember what religion specifically, although it could be this way in multiple). Also Anubis isn’t a dog, there is actually different deity in ancient Egyptian mythology with a wolf head. Also, canine beings or deities show up in most religions

I’m literally Mexican and when you mentioned it’s breed name I literally went “The Xolo- huh??”. We call it Xoloitzcuintle, pronounced like
“Shoh-loh-ehs-queen-kleh” the first ‘i’ pronounced like an E being pronounced more like the E in emerald.
    Idk if that made sense.
