      Thanks! Some of that is my memory issues, but most of it is just that's how I remember things. If someone only says something once, there's no way I'll retain it. I'm planning, once all the basics are finished, to make a couple of project based videos where we make a track from start to finish to using the concepts we've explored in these longer videos. It's probably months away, but it's what I would have liked when I first got the verselab.

    What I love most about the MV1 is how good finished songs sound after mastering and mixing down. The finished songs on the MV1 sound better than the MPC!

      I wish I had some hands on experience with other hardware, like MPCs, but my seizure disorder (and bank account, lol) have kept me from having the opportunity to get more familiar with them. Damn bro, your youtube videos on verselab are a gold mine. I've been working in sequencer mode, and basically got all the ingredients for a song. Now I'm looking to get all these clips organized into sections and eventually export them, or record the midi/audio into ableton, or some process to get a song structure like an intro, verse, chorus, etc. I'm watching your video on clips tracks, and sections. You're so helpful everywhere. I first saw your posts on Facebook. Thanks again.

      @LeRoy3rd seriously, Roland should pay you bro. What other gear do you use to compose?

    • @LeRoy3rd
      @LeRoy3rd  Před 4 měsíci +1

      If Roland (or anyone) sent gear my way, I'd certainly be motivated to give it the same treatment... the issue is (and it's complicated), I can't make any money from any of this (though I do have an Amazon wishlist linked in my bio, and at my webpage... at my webpage you could also read a bit more about my struggles). Also, I'm pretty blunt about my opinions, so, while I do love exploring gear, I'm also pretty critical about the flaws, deliberate handicapping, and bugs.
      As far as composition goes, I'm a classically trained musician, I was mostly taught to read music, and PLAY instruments... it's only been in the last couple of years that I've dipped my toe into composition, music production, and, even, hardware. I own Ableton Live Suite (love. It), and I'd use that, except that I have seizures, and can't be in front of a computer for long. That's what brought me to the verselab.
      As far as hardware I have on hand, I've got a digital/hybrid synth called the MicroFreak, the verselab, and a couple of midi controllers. Nothing too special. I'd love to have a small analog synth to demonstrate, but it's probably going to be 9 months to a year before I can afford to purchase one.

      @LeRoy3rd  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@Rpalacios29623 That's a matter of preference. When I'm just getting down an idea, I typically use an inexpensive pair of earbuds I have (I think they cost around $20, not fancy). They're comfortable, and I listen to them a lot because if they get damaged, or stolen, etc, they can be easily replaced. If I'm taking the verselab with me, I also use these just because they take up very little space, and, honestly, for 90% of creation, pretty much any headphones will do fine. The speakers I use are also pretty inexpensive, and USB powered. I don't have studio monitors (I live in an apartment). When it comes time to do more aurally precise work (mixing and mastering), I find it useful to use a pair of in ear monitors or a decent pair of studio headphones. Honestly, for most work, unless you've really trained your ears, any decent pair of headphones is going to work well. The best headphones are the ones you know the sound of very well. As far as Bluetooth, even if you have a Bluetooth transmitter to plug into the verselab, I wouldn't recommend it because of the latency... if it has a hardware cable you can use, though, it should work just fine. 🙂

    Hello Leroy! Thank you for your videos. I’m going along with them learning this device. I have completed this video and have finally learned how to lay out my sections into a “song.” I have a ways to go before I get a fluent dynamic sound but as I got to a mix down, I select instrument or full mix and at the end of BOTH I keep getting “Closing Error!”
    Can you tell me what that is and how to avoid it?

    • @LeRoy3rd
      @LeRoy3rd  Před 3 měsíci

      I've had that happen occasionally, but I haven't found a way to repeat it, reliably, and I haven't had anyone else be able to. It seems, at least in my experience, to be rare. When I first saw this, I turned my verselab off, waited a couple of minutes, then turned it back on... I'd figured it was an SD card error, perhaps. I loaded the project, and tried to render it out again, and it worked, without error.
      This seems to be the solution... from how randomly it happens, and since restarting the device always fixes it (so far, knock on wood!), this leads me to believe it may be a memory issue, something becoming corrupted in RAM, a buffer overflow, etc.
      So, I realize it's not all that helpful, but the first thing I'd suggest is restarting. Also, for my ease of mind, I routinely backup my projects to an external hard drive, just in case the SD card fails, and occasionally I'll take a couple of days and record all audio tracks and midi data for each project into projects for my DAW, so if my verselab dies, I'll still have the pieces to rebuild projects, if I want to later. (It's a bit overkill, and pretty time consuming, but gives me peace of mind.)

    At 3:06 this is my problem with wave file(out of key),can you help me?.

    • @LeRoy3rd
      @LeRoy3rd  Před rokem +2

      Good question! In this case, as I made these samples, this one was just recorded at the wrong pitch (I record them and add a label so I know the pitch of the sample). I find, in general, many samples don't include the recorded pitch, so you'll have to do a bit of experimentation to find the correct pitch. To do this you can put a tonal instrument on another track, and try to find what pitch your sample is by going back and forth. Then, on the track with the sample you need to adjust, in SEQ > NOTE, press SECTION SELECT, then EDIT+PAD (the pad for the clip you're working on), scroll to TONE SETTING, then CoarseTune, and you can adjust the pitch of the sample up or down by half step (semitone). It's useful to know, also, that when a control from the TONE SETTING menu is on the screen, you CAN press NOTE to go back to NOTE mode without losing the settings on the screen. So, you can go to note mode and play the pads while you adjust the tuning of the sample. Hope that helps! We'll be discussing pad scale and key modes (as well as how scales and keys work, in general) in a video in the near future.

    • @LeRoy3rd
      @LeRoy3rd  Před rokem +3

      I may make a quick video on the process of adjusting the pitch of samples in a future video (might fit well in a tips and tricks video, perhaps?)

    • @LeRoy3rd
      @LeRoy3rd  Před rokem +3

      Oh! One more thing, the verselab puts the original sample on C. So, if the sample is, say, an F, every time you play C on the Verselab, it will sound like an F... So, in this scenario, you'd need to use CoarseTine to adjust the sample down -5. This will make the notes on the Verselab line up with the actual pitch of that sample. As mentioned above, you can also use your ear, and more often than not that will be required because the sample won't be labeled.

  • @MarianoPerez
    @MarianoPerez Před 4 měsíci

    Ok, so if I'm in sequence mode and I create a sequence thats 96 steps, so that would be 6 pages. Then when Im in section select and section mode determining how many measures to play that 96 step clip, its best to set it to 12 measures correct? If i only choose 4 measures, then only 64 of the 96 measures will play. But if i choose 12 measures, then it will be like playing the clip twice, but at least ill have symmetry. Is that correct?
    Also, did you already do a video where you talk about copying and or deleting clips, sections, etc?

    • @LeRoy3rd
      @LeRoy3rd  Před 4 měsíci

      TL;DR: If each part in your section is 6 measures of 4 beats each, setting SECTION to 6 bars will work just fine. The verselab, after SEQ, sees everything in 4 beats bars (measures), but the number of measures doesn't matter. 😊
      *****
      You could set it to 12 measures, but you could also set it to 6. If you're using the default step scale, 1/16, there are 16 steps per page of data in the step sequencer, and each page is one measure. So, the 96 steps will take 6 pages, which is also 6 measures, and you're correct that 4 measures would be 64 steps. That being said, while each measure has to have 4 beats, the number of measures you end up with doesn't really matter. This changes if you're using a different step scale (the step scale is just what each step is, in relation to a beat... after the sequence part of the workflow (SEQ), the verselab counts everything in full measures, and every measure has to be 4 beats.
      If you're working in a time signature that has less than 4 beats per measure, say 3/4, then, you'd want to make enough BEATS to fill up a measure. What I mean is, if you want, say, one measure of 3/4, that's not really possible... after the SEQ portion of the workflow, since the verselab always counts 4 beats in a measure, if you tried to do one measure of 3/4 (3 beats, or 12 steps), it would play the 3 beats you wrote, then start the clip over and ay beat 1 again to fill up the measure. If you wrote one measure of 3/4, then selected 2 measures in SECTION, it would play the 3 beats, then start the clip again and play beat 1, but now measure 1 is over, so it restarts the clip. The effect is, it would play beats 1, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 3, 1 (so it would play beat 1 multiple times). In this case, what you'd need to do is write 4 measures of 3/4... this is 12 beats... the verselab would see it as 3 measures of 4/4, but it would play the same as 4 measures of 3/4. The biggest problem with that is, you'd have to keep track of where your measures start... on the first page of sequencer data, beat 1 of the 2nd measure would be step 13. Beat 2 would be step 1 of page 2, beat 3 would be step 5, etc. It can become confusing quickly.
      At the end of the day, though, if you stick to 4 beats in a measure, everything just falls into place on this device. As long as you have 4 beats, you can have 4 measures, or 12, or 7, or whatever. It's also useful to know, say you have your 96 steps, 6 measures, but you want it repeated twice. CAN you select 12 measures in SECTION? Sure! And there's really no downside, it will just start the clip (the 96 steps) over from the beginning when it ends. But there's also another possibility. You could set it to 6 measures, then add it twice in a row in the SONG portion of the workflow. This may be more flexible, depending on your needs. In SONG, you don't just have 16 sections available, you can have up to 99 PAGES of 16 sections each. So, that being the case, if you made your 6 measure sequence 12 measures in section, every time you loaded that section in SONG, it would play 12 measures. If, instead, you left it at 6 measures, you could still have it play 12, by adding the section twice, but you'd also have the option of limiting it to 6. There are reasons you may want it longer (for instance, maybe one of the other clips in the section IS 12 measures, if you limit your section to 6 measures in SECTION, it will cut off the other parts). At any rate, I may have gotten a bit sidetracked in this answer, I hope I helped answer your question ... I'll write a quick TL;DR at the top, lol.

      Hmmm... Interesting, I don't think I've heard of this issue before. I can't visualize exactly what the issue is (and there are so many variables), any chance you could make a sample project and post a link so I could download it and take a look? There are a couple of weird things the verselab does between sections, long tails especially, can get a bit crushed, but the only time I typically see problems with things not coming in at tempo are usually if trying to use 1/32 as the step scale (that's broken), or not using 4 beats in a measure (the verselab counts every measure as 4 beats).

      If any of your Tones has a Multi FX associated with it, you will get this skip. It is the MultiFX engine reloading at the beginning of each section, EVEN IF the Multi FX setting is the same. It is my number 1 gripe with the MV-1, and once you notice it, you CANNOT ignore it. The only workaround I've found so far is to just disable the Track/Clip level Multi FX and try to make do with just the Total Effects (Mixer Level) effects.

      @@mrburns366 It takes a little fiddling, but you definitely can use your DAW for further polishing. The verselab will output all 7 tracks of midi data, and all the tracks of audio, simultaneously. I've had some issues with sync and some slight clock drift with the MIDI (this could be my old computer and/or a DAW issue, your mileage may vary), but it's definitely usable.
      There's also the option to use zenbeats in verselab mode, but, honestly, I haven't found that very useful. The best feature is dialing in effects and making the menu-diving on the verselab a bit more friendly.
