  • My custom edit of a scene in Char's Counterattack that mixes in a flashback scene from Zeta Gundam. These two scenes hold great significance with each other, and it further strengthens our understanding of Char.
    This pairing of scenes was originally done in comic form by a 4chan /m/ user whose identity is unknown to me. If any info on the original creator is found, please let me know so I can give proper credit.

    The Quatto persona was more then just an alias. It was a chance for Char to live his life freely without the pressure of being a son of Zeon Deikun. He lost part of himself when he was forced to shed it at Dakar.

      The movie expects you to know the history. ZZ explains a lot of why Char is motivated too, but a lot of people skip it thinking that because he's not physically present, its events have no effect on his motivations.

      GetterRay is right. There's more moments than just this one that either callback to or parallel something from Char's past.
      CCA is the knot that ties up Char's character threads as a whole.

      Yeah, with early Gundam you have to pay close attention and sometimes make inferences to get the whole picture.

    The way Char's facial expression shifts from 0:59- First hesitant, then trusting, then truly happy, probably for the first time in his life. He's had to live defensively, behind a mask, and learn not to trust, but for once, he's not only with someone who's seen him for who he is, but also reassures him that he too has a place in the world beyond his revenge against the Zabis. Knowing that there's someone who sees you and knows you and reassures you that there is a place in the world for you, that's the kind of happiness he's feeling right now, happier than he's likely ever felt in his life. He can actually enjoy the feeling of drinking with a true friend. And it only lasts 3 seconds of animation.
    Just unbelievable.

      Its heartbreaking really. Everything after Dakar just breaks Char. Nothing changes in the end for Newtypes and spacenoids. What becomes of the AEUG and Kamille likely had a part in it as well and Char just.... he's done. He's done with waiting. So he decides to take action and he burns down the bridges he had surely built with his rivals Captain Bright Noah and Newtype pilot Amuro Ray. Its a tragic regression but its also a necessity in Char's eyes. He wants one final duel with Amuro to determine who is the better pilot and man. Even though they had left on friendly terms at Dakar. He burns it all down and gives up that happiness because he thinks he has no choice.

    Watching Zeta Gundam made me fall in love with Char more than I thought, and it really helped me understand the character during Char's Counterattack. A man who wants to believe that humanity can leave the craddle of Earth and set their sights on the stars, like his father wanted. But the arrogance of the Earth Federation and impact of Kamille's fate in Zeta pushed him to turn extreme and plummet the Earth with meteors. I feel bad for him because he believed Earth to be a sacred place, but now he has to create a nuclear winter to give humanity the push they need. It's quite sad that he has to do this to the Earth, and it's tragic that Lala's death became a motivator when he had finally accepted it. The methods were wrong, but Char had to take them even if he knew of his actions. He became a human sacrifice. Char became one of my favorite characters in storytelling because of his philosophy and his tragic story.

    This is a beautiful edit. Not everyone gets the subtle hints and connotations that Tomino gives about Char’s character in CCA and marginalize him as a “madman” or that he’s lost it. They don’t get the underlying development that Char understands that what he is doing is morally wrong and perceived as radical/mad but humanity isn’t going to go anywhere to break out of its dark history of violence by biding their time on moral code and wait for millions or billions more to die every generation whir they wait for humanity to figure things out. If Char has to sacrifice his own humanity, if years following CCA they would write about him in history books as “space hitler” or a madman that was a price he was willing to pay if he could save humanity from war by moving them out into space. He wanted peace for everyone but realized (within himself at least) that humanity needed to be pushed in the right direction because at the rate they were going ppl would continue to die and fight and indulge in war forever. His character, his reputation, his name, his humanity, his own moral code. These were all knowing sacrifices Char had accepted that he would have to make/give up. He knows what he’s doing is morally wrong and but it’s necessary: someone has to shoulder the sins of humanity for there to be true peace. If he has to bear the cross than so be it.

    • @TomJupiter
      @TomJupiter Před 2 lety +9

      I dont think thats entirely correct. I think at this point he doesn't care about humanity or the future. Thats just him talking trying to put justification to his suicide plan. All of this was just him setting the grand finale for himself. Drawing out Amuro for one lasr fight.
      Hes not a madman, hes a sadman. Hes been through so much and it just got the better of him. This scene is really great because Char is probably reflecting on what if he just stood by Amuro's side.

    • @RedShogun13
      @RedShogun13 Před 2 lety +7

      @@TomJupiter I think that some of what you’re saying is in there and imo could’ve been what kickstarted Char’s radicalism for sure. I don’t think the entire thing is simply a way of Char venting out his sadness or frustration nor do I think the entire thing was something as “petty” (in this scene with Nanai he asks if she thinks he’s so petty as to start a war just to have a conclusive battle against Amuro and while the sentiment suggests that he isn’t, the delivery of the line hammers home that it is *certainly* icing on the cake for him and part of why he feels this plan is so perfect) Amuro out for some final duel to the death. To your point, I would very much agree that while Amuro comes from this angle of “we have to continue to be patient/trust humanity” Char is very much like “how many Kamille Bidan’s will we lose? How many more Lalah Sune’s will die while we take potshots in the dark while we maybe some day figure it out? Haven’t we waited long enough?” If anything, I think Char has tragically lost too many sons and lovers so to speak, and he’s seen man tear itself apart ad nauseam and for petty reasons and finally has just had enough. He’s coming from the stance of “we are fixing this right now, no more”. His being radical in CCA could have been kickstarted by personal reasons/experiences (and the film even points us towards this in a few scenes) but he is very much acting as the son of Zeon Deikun in this film as well. In this way I think that Char in CCA does have all of these things within him and is a multi-layered, beautifully written and morally ambiguous character for it.

    • @RedShogun13
      @RedShogun13 Před 2 lety +3

      @@TomJupiter I do agree also with your take on this edit though. Char for better or for worse had what I might have felt was a responsibility placed on him since birth with his father being Zeon Deikun. As Quattro Bajeena he could be himself without any of that baggage. The responsibility of being Casval Deikun/advocating for his father/father’s philosophy as well as the responsibility of revenge for his father’s murder (I know by the time Zeta rolls around the Zabi’s are basically wiped out but just harboring that hatred in his heart). It’s definitely Char ruminating on what could have been if he wasn’t born Casval Rem Deikun.

    This gives me chills. That cut makes it seem like Char twisted Amuro's words into his actions now. Tbh I wish this were the basis of the movie, as this both ties and breaks Char and Amuro's connection to each other and how they see humanity. So different, yet so alike.
