At the time this movie was produced, South Africa was fighting a border war with Angola. Angola was a former Portuguese colony that won its independence in 1975. The main opposition group that fought the Portuguese was the communist MPLA which came to power as the new nation's government. From then on, Angola received arms from the Soviet Union and military advisors from Cuba. Apart from their advisory role the Cubans also took part in combat operations. This gave the Cuban military some actual combat experience though they suffered badly at the hands of the well trained South African Defense Force. Despite this, the MPLA remained firmly in control of Angola and a ceasefire was signed in 1989. As part of the ceasefire agreement, South Africa withdrew from its captured territory to form the newly created buffer state of Namibia. In this movie the fictional country of Mumbaka is Angola in all but name.
Rhodesians never die.
@pavo6503: And that's half the battle!
@prolet kult Why not?? It's 200 years behind the times in everything else.
Nice info, honestly, thanks for posting this.
You learn something new everyday
That moment when you find out Dolph Lundgren has a masters in chemical engineering...
And he went to MIT on a Fulbright Scholarship!
@@johnhutchinson7343 seriously?
Also (and this was several years ago) imagine being the guy who broke into Dolph's house intending to rob it while not knowing it was Dolph's house.
Then running away fast af knowing you might potentially have to confront Dolph Lundgren.
@@timtheskeptic1147 The burglars had tied up his wife (intentions with her were unknown), saw a huge portrait of Dr. Dolf hanging above the fireplace, put everything back, untied her, said "sorry" and got out of there quick.
@@johndodo2062 Yes, he got a full scholarship while also competing in Karate tournaments with the Swedish national Karate team, even won a couple of int. tournaments.
Eventually, he hooked up with Grace Jones, who helped him getting a small role in that James Bond movie she was starring, ''View to a Kill'' and when she later starred in ''Conan the Destroyer'' he became friends with Arnold. This is how he got into the movie business.
And before all of that, he served in the Swedish Special Forces Coastal Rangers Company, these guys are the Swedish's Navy Special Forces Amphibious Operations Unit, basically their version of the Navy SEALS.
I've survived the entire quarantine due to your body of work, Tenold. I bow to you!
Speaking of Dolph Lundgren, pleeeease do a review of "Showdown in Little Tokyo". A total cult classic, featuring both the Dolph and Brandon Fucking Lee!
That was actually "Afri-cola", which turns out to have been a real thing.
It's still a real thing
@@666mrmongo Is it still? Fascinating.
@@johncrafton8319 at least here in Germany
Amazingly, there really was an experimental Russian double-barreled assault rifle, the AO-63, which was tested but never adopted. However, it looked like an AK-74 with two barrels side-by-side and a thick (triple-stack) magazine. The weapon in this movie was made from a FN FAL by adding a second non-functional barrel above the real one, thickening the foregrip, magazine and stock, and adding a Lewis Gun magazine. (Courtesy of IMFDB).
As well, the "rocket-less" "RPG" may not have been an error. The intended successor to the RPG-7 was the RPG-16. It looked a lot like the earlier RPG-16 but the rocket was fully enclosed by the tube. It could be folded in half for more compact transport and storage. It was issued to airborne and Spetsnaz forces. The RPG-16 never saw wide issue. But it did look like an RPG -7 with no rocket loaded.
Interesting! Though I'm gonna guess that the movie that stuck a Lewis magazine on a FAL and called it a day didn't put a whole lot of research into RPG prototypes.
@@michaelccozens Touche! We can assume any technical accuracy is mainly by coincidence.
Добавлю так же есть и трёхствольный автомат Коробова.
Its because Nikolai has the scorpion mark they trust him the second time, a bushmans mark means hes a warrior and can be trusted.
80s response: I'm out of bullets. Oh yeah classic 80s.
Dolph Lundgren is an intelligent man and a former Swedish kickboxing heavyweight champion. His acting, however, can be hit or miss.
Fun fact: ingesting venom does not harm you.
Jeremy Jenkins Depends on the type of venom actually.
@@lordoshower3478 well there's venomous and poisonous. If something's venomous, the creature must bite you. If it's poisonous, you must bite (or touch) it.
@@judyhopps9380 Well... venom can cause issues when ingested too... the question is if your body can digest it fast enough
I fell in love with this movie when I realised Nicolai's plan was to murder dozens of friends and then ask the enemy "Do you trust me now? No? Ok, maybe if I blow up a dozen more tanks".
Props on the use of Power Glove in the intro.
Brion James co-starred in 'Red Heat', 'Tango and Cash', and 'Enemy Mine' as well. I liked him in these films.
As well as Steel Dawn with Patrick Swayze
5th element will always be my favorite
He was also in Crimewave alongside fellow character actor Paul Smith (who was also in Dune, Red Sonja, and Midnight Express).
Don't forget Southern Comfort, he always reminded me of an older Hulk Hogan, I used to think he was Hogans brother, Brother !!!👍💪💪😃
He and M. Emmett Walsh were also in Bladerunner.
I was 20 when I saw it in theaters and I really thought Dolph was going to be the next Bronson. Turned out he is a Mensa genius who was just learning to speak english.
Dolph spoke perfect English. He did his graduate studies at the University of Sydney in Australia and worked as a nightclub bouncer while attending. Following that he worked as a professional bodyguard for Grace Jones. Any accent, from Rocky 4 to this movies was simply put on for the cameras.
@@craigjomaia He is still alive
@@Andy_Sidaris Physically, yes. Career wise, not so much sadly lol. When I used the past tense for spoke I merely meant he spoke perfect English back then when he made Rocky 4. Past tense as in his life time, not past tense as in him.
@@craigjomaia gotcha. I was reading I was like when did Dolph die
In 1981 I joined the Army and by 1985 I found myself stationed in Germany In the mechanized Infantry, 2AD forward, ready to face the commies head on, boy I miss those days, life was a lot simpler then.
The Godzilla roar over the explosion was priceless! LMFAO!
Godzilla grenades would be incredibly popular, but absolutely none would survive to make it to the battlefield, having all been set-off on the latest drunken Saturday behind the local Circle K.
@@michaelccozens fun fact there were plans to make a Nuclear Mine and the Man Portable Davy Croket is a thing
Technical gripe: the Mi-24 hind attack helicopter is armored to withstand heavy machine-gun fire. And in Soviet parlance that means the 14.5mm anti aircraft machine gun. It would take a 20mm - no more like a 23mm considering that they're using Soviet equipment - cannon shell to take it out. And I can tell you equivocally that whatever the hell that gun is that he's using is not a 23 millimeter cannon. if you tried to fire a 23 mm cannon the way he's holding that gun it would knock him on his ass. OTH, if he fired an RPG at it that would actually work and would also be completely believable.
Bohemian Monk he is firing into an open door and probably supposed to be hitting munitions stored internally, but hey, it's just a movie.
@@poisoncontrol4488 that could do it.
Nothing about the weapons in this movie made any sense.
You nailed it. The confrontation with the helicopter and the general could've been better if they made it longer and armed Dolph with an appropriate weapon.
That wasn't the Mi-24 Hind, it was a Sikorsky S-62 Seaguard, repainted from US Coast Guard red and white to tan with parts bolted on to make it look like a Hind.
That's "Brion James" with an "O", I'll have you know...what an actor! What a guy! "Brion James, F - yeah!"...
To date this is one of my favorite episodes because of the Van-Damme impression while saying “little bush-man”. That moc back and forth is the best, a huge action guy and a small African Guy... this Saturday on Fox :)
Caught a couple of your vids recently and started binge watching them and I wanted to make a request for the 1985 movie "The Stuff". It made an impression on me as an '80's kid where I won't touch cottage cheese.
That bald, Cuban guy is played by the great Michael Ironside. He became popular in the 80's thanks a to cop tv show called "Hunter". During the 2000's he was the voice of Sam Fisher on the Splinter Cell video games.
He is also a famous philosopher, he asked the question "COME ON YOU APES, DO YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER!"
And of course, Scanners!
That's not Michael Ironside, though i made same mistake initially. This is Carmen Argenziano.
@@tomaszwitkowski9507 Mmm it seems Brandon used footage from the sequel on this video by mistake, because Ironside is actually part of the cast on Red Scorpion 2.
@@stonerdemon Maybe he was, but there is no Michael Ironside in this video. For what i know, Red Scorpion 2 is very different movie, despite the title. I don't think Michael Ironside wear russian style/supposedly cuban uniform in it, or interact with russians. Also, there is no Brion James nor Dolph Lundgren in Red Scorpion 2. And young Carmen Argenziano really looked much like Michael Ironside.
Brion James and M. Emmett Walsh have been in every movie since 1979!!😁😁😁
dolph was in pretty great shape in this movie
I've watched this on VHS. I'm old.
You are not the only one.
I remember renting this movie in VHS on my local video store in Portugal.
I've seen this before. I think it was on my ship's CCTV back when I was in the Navy. Or was it at a low budget theater? Hard to remember. I was drunk a lot back in those days.
I remember seeing this at the theaters in New York when it came out...*sigh* I feel older!!
No you are not
Betamax here.
One of the most explosive action movies in the '80s...really stings!
Michael Emmet Walsh I remember playing Jill's military father on Home Improvement. I never understood why he was killed off on that show though.
M Emmet Walsh was also in "Blade Runner". But maybe you knew that...
He was also in Christmas with the Cranks. Some say it was the non official sequel to Blade Runner.
So...We going to get Dark Angel (AKA I come in peace)? Or did I miss that one?
Great review. One thing though you could've mentioned was that this movie was modeled on the Angolan Civil War and that Sundata was modeled on Savimbi
I remember renting this movie as a kid in the 80's but the funny thing is I named my second son Nikolai not sure if the movie spelled it the same way but I love these 80's action movies and all it's cheese
That's America for you, extra cheese all the way!
M.Emmet Walsh was in Blade Runner too.
You could have gone 2 for 2 there.
He was? I'll need to watch it again
@@victorm152 he was the blade runner chief who brought Decker out of retirement.
Yeah, I remember Red Skelton.
Scorpion. I meant Scorpion.
Oh no, he got stung by... a few emperor scorpions, which have the weakest venom of all scorpions because their pincers are so large and powerful they don't need strong venom.
7:32 South African-made Ratel armored car
And Battle Zone (1980 Arcade game) life-action movie sence.
Am I tripping balls or was that a twin barrel machine gun fed from a Lewis light machine gun pan magazine on top and a BAR box magazine on the bottom?
i thought he was saying “get some data” for more than half the video
Well, I guess Red Heat technically doesn't count, because there was a Russian among good guys (even though he was a Terminator) and he wasn't "traitor" like Lundgren's character in thins movie.
the lion's roar was the one from MGM studios!
I used to have this on VHS. I know this movie more than I care to admit. Lol
I found this movie on vhs at a garage sale along with a copy of an Ice-T movie called 'Stealth Fighter'.
R.I.P. M. Emmet Walsh(1935-2024)
the guys behind the MacGruber movie and subsequent TV series must've taken their cues from this movie when it came to adding random animal roars to their explosions.
No Jive talkin' Airplane references? That was the guy wasn't it? Pretty sure...
Hey, you know what they say: see a broad to get dat booty yak 'em, leg 'er down a smack 'em yak 'em! Col' got to be! Y'know? Shiiiiit.
Brion James? Tango and Cash?
Pony tail I remember this quote.
if it were not for the semi-popularity and near-obscurity of this character, Dolph Lundgren would've made a great Doc Savage in a feature film back in the 1980's.
This... is your best review EVER!
Actually, the only real big issue I have with this movie isn't so much the dated jingoism or that fact that it's a standard action movie for puny brains - it's the fact that the heavy machine gun carried by both Dolph Lundgren and his Cuban opponent looks too much like one of those plastic Nerf guns at times - hell, other contemporaries had guns that fired blanks but looked WAY more like the real thing. Oh well... "America, FUCK YEAH!"
How could you have left "cabin boy" off of brion James's extensive filmography
Aktually... Mumbakka is just south of Zanzibarland, right near Outer Heaven
Used to rent this on vhs a lot as a kid never was into Rambo much but I mean dolph was he man he had that going
It can’t beat big trouble in little chine though my all time fave
"Come on, man... All the cool bushmen are doing it." I had to laugh 😅
Red Scorpion Seen it 1st week it hit my Hollywood Video good movie that nice Hump of action movies from 1988 - 1994
I appreciate this channel so much. You’ve reviewed so many movies I watched growing up. Ah nostalgia 😆
This movie really should have given Brion James and Michael Ironsides more screen time, two of the best villain actors back then.
9:02 best fucking scene in the whole movie lol
Brion James also in Tango and Cash. And LOL at 7:00
0:58 Truer words have never been said...Mao and Lenin would be so proud😋
Sorry to disappoint ya but the PRC is about as communist as Germany is. That is, not at blinkin' all. Besides, Mao's tyranny made Lenin look like a teddybear. How ya think Stalin offed him so easily when his figurehead-ness ran its course? Communism is a fairytale, people.. everyone on top are just authoritarian dictators with either churchy or kitschy shit tacked on as required. Makes for good bad movies to laugh at though! Just sit back and watch the pretty fireworks while the stationary changes. ;)
@@fabrikator-generalakhilley6896 well, you’re mostly right communism is a myth, not becuase it’s a lie but because it’s built to fail. It’s own methods create a system rife with corruption that is easily coopted by a dictator.
That doesn’t however mean those that believe in it aren’t just as dangerous. Tankies and the lesser filth of leftists are Religious fanatics in behavior. They hid in the label of liberal for so long we forgot that that meant too.
I didn’t associate the soviets with scorpions but I damn sure do now.
fun fact, the RPG without a rocket is in fact an RPG. however their are certain rounds made for it that are dropped into the tube and fired like a grenade launcher. judging by the result it appears that one was loaded with a scatter round. even though you cant see a rocket, not all rounds were big enough to protrude from the barrel.
No Doc Salvage.
It's funny to see Emmett Walsh firing a gun at someone other than Steve Martin. He was the sniper in "The Jerk."
Brion James is also in Crimewave along with Bruce Campbell. He did a Bruce Willis film too. I just can not remember it right now.
5th element I think lol 😂😎
I love the names of fictional African states they come up with. Zangaro ( Dogs of War), Wakanda (Black Panther)
BTW, the sign in the bar at 4:30 is actually for Afri-Cola (fitting as the movie takes place in Africa), a brand of drink that still exists in Germany. Their real logo looks nothing like the Coca Cola logo, however ... www.brandslex.de/markenlexikon/cover/a/markenlexikon-afri-cola
The Godzilla roar was perfect
The camp fire scene where the guy mentions "Much Fisting", Dolph had the classic look on his face of "Yeah, Wait What?!?!?"
It's actually only about 87% Of the inventory in Wal-Mart. The rest is made in Mexico.
Just as a side note: apparently smoking powdered scorpions is kind of a Thing in Afghanistan, a trend spreading into Middle Eastern countries.
"Break into Lenin's tomb and tea-bag the corpse?!?" Great. That visual will haunt me until the day I die, then follow me into the afterlife. 🤢🤮
Thanks a lot, Brandon! 🤣
At least Dolph is not doing badly these days...with Creed 2, Aquaman and the upcoming Dead Trigger
wait they made a movie called dead trigger? please tell me that it's not based on the games... or it's at least decent?
You know why Brandon never does a Chuck Norris movie? He is scared.
The 80’s WOOOH!
This is great. I saw this at the theatre as a kid. And its one of my all time favorite movies. Please...review the punisher with dolph lundgren.
AMAZING stunt/explosion at 10:06
Bryon james....in both 48 Hrs movies? I know that dude, too
That's the ICEMAN, Jack!
I thought this was an awesome low budget schlock
MURIKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Fuck yeah
(Lightly rubs AR-15 with a rag) Oh, sorry, were you communists going on about something?
What a gem from the 80's with a great cast. M. Emmet Walsh, Brian James, & Dolph. Come on you don't even have to write anything it writes itself. Great review Tenold
Mumbaka is a real place its in Tanzania
Fun fact: Tom Savini got a few bucks creating the Cuban officers amputation (while holding a grenade) via gunfire gag near the end of the film. It's not his best work, but neat all the same.
Cool fact! That guy worked everywhere it seems.
Trust me I know who Brian James is, no worries.
Bri*on* James. :P
Nice use of Power Glove at the start.
I love how their main machine gun has a round magazine on top, and also a.... thing? that looks like it's meant to be another standard magazine under the barrel. Sorry, the barrelS, there's two of them, but only one fires...
Judging by the size of lower magazine I think it contains higher caliber cartridges, but the lower barrel has the same diameter as the upper one. So, it's just prop made by someone who doesn't know shit about guns.
80's when a man could destroy a Mi-24 (aka flying tank) with a gun
"Just stay on your side of the cage man..."
"AMERICA.... FUCK YEAH!"
Did you say Nelson Mandela? You know the head of the ANC? You know the guys in South Africa who liked to give their opponents necklaces? Oh, I'm sorry, it was called "necklacing". Oh, yeah, he was in prison at the time, but his wife is quoted as saying, "With our boxes of matches, and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country."
Man, the guy could pick them, right?
Oh the '80's.... when a machinegun held explosive powers and everyone was doped up on coke and hairspray... ♡ ♡
"Get to work" means getting drunk, that's the Russian Way
I remember misreading the video box to this - watch out Stallone and swartzeneger here comes Dolf Lundgren - so I spent the whole movie waiting for Arnie and that
This is legitimately my favorite movie. And yeah, communism is still shit and you missed my favorite performance of their anthem by Dolph Lundgren.
6:28 what, no "No Michael Pare' allowed past this point" jokes?
I saw this movie on TV as a kid, but never got to see what happened to the Cuban guy. He picked up a grenade, and then the movie cut to the next scene. Now I finally know what happened!
I know how feel Brandon I Felt the same way about stranger things season 3 when eleven and her mother do not reunited the same way you feel about Brian James and dolph lundgren not fighting at end of this movie
When my friends and I riffed on this it was mostly how Dolph looked like ducky from the fighting game.
9:16 is that the Photon torpedo sound effects from Star Trek? Note to self don't eat grapes while listening to one of your videos. Just shot grape matter out of my nose!
08:45 eh, not entirely true. If you swear on the beach here in Virginia you can be charged with a class 4 misdemeanor and fined something like $200.
Watched this movie just a few days ago at some diner. Oh man did I laugh all the way through. It was so cheesy, the lines were bad, and the death scenes were hilariously over the top.
And Kallunda Kintash? What kind of name is that? Did the writers thought about Kunta Kinte and decided to add more alphabets in the name?
Dolph Lundgren did indeed usd his acting career to fund his scientific research. What a guy
Of course we know Good Ole" Brian James" I knew his face" i didn't know his name until Brandon said it' LOL
would really like for your thoughts on infra man...love the show and keep it going...
Maybe there is a detailed scene where Brian James’s Character gets excited
Hell Yeah, BriOn James: The Horror Show and Nightmare At Noon (both worthy of a review, lol).
*Jingoist? Ok I am officially crushing on you lol*
