    Accented Cinema - Episode 75
Every Christmas, this channel recommends a heartfelt Japanese animated film, and this year is no exception. While at first, I was taken back by the idea of making a 3D Doraemon film. After watching it, not only do I think the film is beautiful, I also think it is surprisingly deep for a children's anime.

I remember Disney brought the rest rights to Doraemon and made an English dub - I don't think it was popular tho, since I never seem to see/hear about the western audience talking about it much
Oh, Shinchan also had an old English dub - it was way vulgar than what it already kinda was at the time (?) so I think it was on AdultSwim or sth, and I remember seeing a lot of comments saying how they remember loving the dub :
but honestly as funny as it was, I prefer the series after Himawari because on one hand, censorship and audience changed so there's less of stuff like the 'elephant' song (honestly I kinda miss since they rarely mention it at all); but on the other hand, it's kinda showing how Shinchan is becoming more mature because he's an older brother.
Oh and: Is Atashinchi still ongoing as an anime?
I found their official channel and I seem to keep finding episodes I don't remember watching (or maybe I just missed those particular episodes) - they do have little dubs of moving manga clips that are pretty nice, so I assume the manga (or I guess the new version of the manga? That's usually the case for old series since the original mangaka probably passed away by now) is ongoing rn.

@@606aichan7O7 these anime were the ones that streamed in India (in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, etc dubs) when I was a child. Doraemon and shin chan are still going on (and are iconic by now) while atashinchi has been cancelled, I now watch them on their CZcams channel. I saw the English dub of shinchan and tbh it just killed the entertainment value for me so I didn’t watch it, it’s way better in English sub or Chinese or Malaysian version with English sub, I think they have moderate censorship which is fine ( Japanese culture traditionally was more open about nudity which is why it appears shocking and mature to western audiences even though it’s a kid’s show)

I reread Doraemon earlier this year and I found that while his incompetence at using Doraemob tools lead to a lot of failures it only ever backfired when he have bad intentions. When he used Doraemon tools for good intention the result mostly turned out well for him. I personally think that's what Fujiko F. Fujio team try to instill upon children, which is to use your ability for kindness. It's okay to rely upon others as long as your heart is in the right place.
Thank you for covering this, this series have a special place in my heart and I am truly grateful someone talk about this.

Yes! Everytime he use the gadget for good causes, the story ends with happy notes.
Once there was this one person that writes in a newspaper about how series like Doraemon is not good for children, because it made them lazy and just want a gadget to solve their problem. That person clearly do not read into Doraemon. Sure, when I was a child, I didn't though much about morality of Doraemon, but as an adult, when I read that person's writing, I realized just how much Doraemon has taught me, usually about environment.
One chapter that I still remember fondly is about glasses that can make you understand plants' emotion. In the story, Nobita wanted to pull out a dandelion, but Doraemon stopped him, and gave him the gadget. After that, just like how Nobita want to Shizuka happy in the movie, Nobita tended the dandelion, even went as far as protected it from a typhoon by covering it with a pot.
I think that, maybe, that is the chapter that made me love dandelion, and flower in general, and dislike people who pluck flowers without good reason, or just want to blow dandelion's seeds.

@@Dikahar Oh my goc! So true. I first read that chapter when I was in elementary school but I still remember it vividly. The conversation between the dandelion with her baby/seed is so beautiful and touching. IMO, It's one of the best chapters that Fujiko had ever written.
Also, I notice one of the most reoccuring themes of those meaningful chapters of Doraemon is protecting environment. The concept, story and characters in these chapters are so well-written and unique, but still understandable and captivating to the targeted audience (children). Props to Fujiko F Fujio for being the best mangaka of all time.

    • @Dikahar
      @Dikahar Před 2 lety +26

@@lillientruong6350 Yup. Like the "Tree-man" that Nobita and Doraemon raised, "kidnapped" by alien, then come back in the adventure book as a environmental activist in the universe.
Another chapter that I know is when Nobita has a conversation with his father about environment. His father told Nobita that he could play and caught fish in the river. Nobita asked, "I such dirty river?"
"Well, in my time, the river is much cleaner."
TBH, I don't remember anything else of that chapter. I only remember that panel and the dialogue. Many years later, when I got a chance to visit Japan, I was greeted by clean river! There were eagles, ducks, storks, fishes. The river support the wildlife and of course humans.
At that time I remembered that chapter, and thought that when it was written, maybe Fujio lived in a city with dirty river. Even though I don't know other cities' rivers condition, seeing that one clean river in Kyoto made believe that the others should be clean too. So, from the time the story was released to the current time, Japan has improved. While maybe it will take a considerable time to achieve what Japan has done, as a Doraemon reader that remember the story, I have hope that my country rivers will be clean too.

    • @lillientruong6350
      @lillientruong6350 Před 2 lety +21

@@Dikahar From what I can tell, late 70s and early 80s (the era in Doraemon) is around the time that Japan is recovering from postwar environmental changes/pollution, so I guess the river mentioned by Nobita's dad can be the example of then reality. I think with the many environmental awareness campaigns these day, it's most likely that Japan, along with many other countries, has been changing for the better.
I remember that episode, it's the one when Nobita got mad with his mom and think that going back to the past (I think around 30s - 40s) will bring him more benefits (children not having to go to school, cleaner and less-polluted environment, etc). But when he did, he realized that children in the past didn't have it better than those in the modern day (having to work on the field, not having enough food and medicine,etc...)

Doraemon is such a dear friend to me as a child. So at the end of the first movie, when Nobita "lie" that Doraemon won't come back, unknowingly making him come home, because of the gadget's effect, I thought to myself that Nobita is me. Doraemon is a fiction character, but his influence really live within me. He is nowhere, but also always stand by me. No matter how long time passes, he has home to comeback in my heart.

Doraemon is popular for the same reason that the most popular Disney character in Indonesia is Donald Duck, not Mickey Mouse.
Yes, for people in the west looking a good counterpart, you don't have to look further to find a loser protagonist.
Donald is unlucky, loser, hot-headed, and petty. But he cares about his loved ones, like his mainstay nephwes, Huey, Dewey, Louie (Kwik, Kwek, Kwak in Indonesian) and mischievous St. Bernard dog, Bolivar (Lubas in Indonesian). He doesn't have the charm nor luck of Gladstone Gander (Untung Angsa in Indonesian), but Daisy (Desi Bebek in Indonesian), despite her antics, still fall for the more wholesome Donald Duck. It is Donald's effort in winning Daisy's heart (again, female trophy trope) that gets her, not Gladstone's promises of fame and luxury with all of his lottery wins. Donald often gets loan or support from his rich Scottish uncle, Scrooge McDuck (Gober Bebek in Indonesian), just like how Nobita got gadgets from Doraemon to solve his issues. But in the end, they always failed. It however, never breaks Donald's will to find happiness in his simple life. In case anyone wondered, yes, Disney characters have their own local names all over the world.

The way Shizuka is always bothered, the bullying of Nobita that's taken as a joke, how Nobita's mom yells at him, and how Nobita just wants Doraemon to fix everything. Bullying is a fact of daily life for most young boys and yes it's taken as a joke, it's true for girls also the only difference is that girls don't get physically assaulted by their bullies as often. I think that ending was supposed to emphasize more on the brother-relationship between Doraemon and Nobita. In a way, it is still in Nobita's character in that he is very dedicated in reaching his end goal, only in that ending the goal changed from simply wanting a happy life to reviving his inactive best friend who had been there for him through thick and thin from the very beginning. I kinda agree that it has a lot of plotholes, mainly regarding the time-traveling schtick and how his relationship with Shizuka got developed, but still it wasn't bad for a fanmade ending.
After all, there's nothing wrong with having a grand ambition motivated by a simple cause. What matters is your happiness in the end, and for the Nobita in that ending, he wanted to see Doraemon again and that drove him to become the best robotic scientist in the world.
For me who was a huge Doraemon manga reader tho, I find that ending more satisfying than the one in the movie, since the relationship between Nobita and Doraemon were more fleshed out, especially in the special issues and the 2D films that came before this movie. But of course, this movie is great as well, rather it focuses more on Nobita's own original end goal to win Shizuka's heart, so they went with the first few volumes of the issues which ended with what was originally Fujiko's original vision for the ending of Doraemon (up until he went back to the future, the part where Nobita stood up to the high school bullies and also earning Shizuka's and everyone else's affection was entirely original).
Fujiko continued the manga after that though, and I think it ended prematurely without there ever been an official closure and that's where the fanmade ending came from, supposedly to tie up the loose ends with the development of Doraemon's and Nobita's brother-like bond.

Fuck, the first chapter of this hit me like a truck.
As someone who's in a similar situation as Nobita (though 23 as opposed to 10, which is probably what makes it hit so hard), always hearing that you're a loser just nags at you like nothing else. Only ever being bad to mediocre at everything, not having that *one* passion you excel at which assuredly will bring you success and wealth one day. It felt hopeless at times, like "Why even bother with anything when I'll never be able to reach the heights expected of me?".
The conclusion really helped put me back into a more positive headspace and have a more positive outlook on my future. A bad grade's not the end of the world, not having a great destiny predestined for you since birth is not the end. It's easy to say to others, but hard to drill into your own head, and I think it finally broke through to me.

I honestly love the through line of this duology, which is "Even the mundane can be special, especially if it's something you built with the help of those you love." Nobita didn't need to be some celebrity, or some world-renowed figure, just a dude with the girl he loves and the more than decent chance of building a nice stable family.
To me, that's just the grounded 'ending' a fantastical series like Doraemon needs.

I have always watched Doraemon (albeit dubbed in Tagalog) since my early childhood. The way you give your insight and explanation of the film series (which made to our local TV lately, again dubbed in Tagalog) made me emotional a little bit. Knowing the manga as well, it's kinda weird that Nobita in the films remains the clumsy loser that he was rather than being the scientist that was dictated in the manga. Indeed this is striking the current generation's sensibilities on living life just the way you are. Probably the most brilliant move by the film writers.
    Cheers and more power!

Doraemon is truly the everliving memories of almost every (used-to-be) kids.
Recently I decided to do a Doraemon re-read (short series, movie series, baseball series, Doraemon's friends series, ...) and I still remember most of the plot (even 80% of short series just by looking at the name and cover of each chapter). The last time I read Doraemon' was probably 10 years ago.
And it truly hit me with nostalgia: the first time I read Doraemon from a sister at my grandparents's rent house, the first Doraemon movie I watched at my friends birthday, the money I saved up to complete all Doraemon manga (I gave it to my cousin years and years ago and I'm happy I liked it and passed it down to his friends), the first Doreamon plushie I desired for so long and got it for my birthday.
Doraemon sticks to me for so long because
    1. I'm a tech freak and those gadgets build my dream,
    2. If you read some of Fujiki's other series, his stories focus deeply on morality and often end with a lesson to the reader. Some chapters in Doraemon act as filler but some give some really deep lessons (ex: Chapter about a dandellion teaches about caring, motherhood and courage; Chapters about Doraemon's love is to let go and hope for the other's best; Chapters about Nobita's birth name meaning is about parenthood; and most of chapters teach friendship and trust are the most powerful weapon against evil).

In fact, the fan-made ending is also quite reasonable if someone learns about the time loop. Nobita and his group are the only ones who can move space and time freely without fear of being caught by the time police. As explained, Nobita is the breaking point of time. In other words, Doraemon is the creator of Nobita (Doctor), and it is Nobita with knowledge of robotics who has created the advanced 21st century or indirectly created Doraemon.

I really like how this movie touches upon the more emotional and sympathetic moments of the long-running classic that is Doraemon. The thing is that, after everything the series has shown us, the ending telling us that Nobita is a nobody is realistic, but still kind of a cop-out…
Seriously, how many times has he rescued his naked girlfriend from microscopic aliens already? Like Homer Simpson, Nobita is a means to have the average reader identify with the story vicariously. But both characters have already been through so many extraordinary experiences, that they have become a parody of themselves. Instead of “you’re not special”, such characters teach us that even the Homers and Nobitas of the world have a chance to shine, even if it means relying on their eccentricity.

This emphasizing the idea that success doesn't necessarily comes from being smart alone it takes a great deal of hardwork. When Nobita actually tries to study he does get good grades on his test . I like how the show is a critique on laziness as opposed to being dumb or just talentless.

Like, I get it, he could have moments of growths here and there, but with the series being episodic, most of those moments were forgotten by the end of the episode. There was also the fact that when the series wanted you to think that Nobita was a loser, there was no extent to which it wouldn't go to make you think that. Even Nobita himself becomes angry at how much of a loser he becomes. He saw into the future and saw himself rejecting going with Shizuka to the mountains due to a cold. When he sees that she got stuck and needs help, he sees that his future self got worse from the cold so he disguises himself and goes to help her, but fail every time he tries to help themselves and Shizuka ends up fixing the problem. After the ordeal he sees the future and watches how Shizuka accepts his wedding proposal, because, and I quote, "You fail so much that you won't be able to live on without me" or something. Of course Nobita gets angry at this because it's played for a laugh, but it ends up becoming the truth.

The 2005 reboot series kinda fixed this, many episodes are directly connected to each other although you wont notice it if you dont watch them in the right order

I was already in high school when Doraemon started airing in my country. But it was still very entertaining nonetheless. Out of all the awesome gadgets, my favorite are 2: The teleportation door and the "smart" bread: bread that you place on top of a book. Then that "stores" the book's content and when you eat the bread, your brain "absorbs" everything in the book.
My husband and I were in a long distance relationship for like 7 years before getting married so Doraemon's door was something we often joked about. And through college and grad school, I often wished the smart bread was real 😅
Those aside, this video essay made me appreciate Doraemon in a deeper sense - outside of its childish comedy and more into its humanity.

I am from India, and Doraemon and shinchan meant the world to me in my childhood,I personally thought no American or Indian Cartoon was ever a match for them, although I know that shinchan was actually heavily censored because it had much nudity before broadcasting in India but Doraemon, shinchan were a major part of my childhood ,as a child watching Doraemon I always used to be curious about what new gadget will Doraemon pop out of his pocket and shinchan was very funny.

This was such a great video I came across.
Watching Doraemon back when I was younger, in the late hours of the night, it kept me entertained and curious about what it portrayed, even if it was a simple kids show. I never truly thought that the series could have such a deeper meaning years later with movie adaptations... This fills my heart. Doesn't matter if you're relating to the story or the character, it's just wonderful to feel what a fictional person can portray in just two movies, and I find it a great motivational boost to many young people... Even if you're not the greatest, just aim for what you want in life, and eventually you'll achieve it with persistence, and that's a beautiful ending note for Doraemon...

For me, the Doraemon OVAs, directed by the obscure, (but also brilliant), Ayumu Watanabe from 1998 to 2002 that were released along the annual films, are the best thing ever to came off this franchise.
I love the premise of the short films, the old 90s animmation, the fantástic seiyuus from the 79's series, and the feeling of nostalgia that is impregnated in the general artwork, from the character models to the backgrounds.
The return of Doraemon, The nigth before Nobita and Shizuka's weeding or The day i was born....etc
The maturity of this stories is something not that common in Doraemon, but man, it really feels like they belong in the show. For me, the best of Doraemon.

I only recently started watching Doraemon when I was around 19-20. Although my grades at school were a little more like Dekisugi’s than Nobita’s (as an Asian American, I couldn’t disappoint my parents in front of my peers. Although I think I did anyway lol), I was always an awkward person and didn’t have many friends. I felt like a loser most of the time because I was (and sometimes still am) an outcast. Nowadays I always seem to be worrying about the future and getting a job when I’m out of college, but Doraemon is a gentle reminder that your worth isn’t determined by your success in a career or how much money you make, and that a life well lived is one spent caring about other people. Really happy you covered this today, thank you!

I grew up reading the chinese (particularly HK) translated version of the where Doraemon is known as Ding Dong. Then transitioned to watching original Japanese anime, and finally he's in 3D now. It's almost like my childhood grew alongside Doraemon.
