Indonesian movies from the 70s and 80s are a genre unto themselves, though Mystics of Bali is probably the most famous. That said, a look at the recent Indonesian superhero movies (starting with Gundala) would also just genuinely be interesting.
I noticed Salman Khan in the beginning of the video and his recent movies are actually interesting case of lazy bad movies. Since you also talked about star culture, it would be nice if you could dive deeper into star culture in India. In fact, star culture is the only reason how we still see mega budget bad movies like every couple of months because these people didn't care to spend on story/script and were sure that movie might work because of huge following of certain actor. Good thing is here in India (especially after popularisation of streaming platform), people are familiar with wide variety of cinema now so now bad movies are being rejected more and more. Race 3 (Salman starrer) is considered one of the worst movies of recent times especially considering Race 1/2 were liked by majority of people.
Also all recent bad movies of Salman Khan can be summarised as - He's basically doing it as a charity for unemployed people he knows to give them work including directors. He's not as such a bad actor if you notice his previous filmography or even latest release Tiger 3 but it's just that he doesn't put much efforts in former category movies and nobody around him is going to tell him to do it (he's too big for someone to point out error to him).
I remember when Sulli (principal actress, and also an idol) received backlash for saying that she couldn't understand the script. People called her dumb and unprofessional, but when the film screened it was clear that she was right.
I think it’s safe to say that this South Korean film “Real” [starring Kim Soo-hyun and the late Sulli of f(x)] is an embodiment of “all that glitters isn’t gold.”
@@crystalpeaches7825 I don’t know how many fans but I imagine it flood with a bunch of hate comments. best option is not allowing people to comment which a lot of celeb do it. every time I see so many hate comment on a celeb page like I wonder if they actually reading them or care about it.
@@YorgosL1 when she was alive, i always checked her profile because she's my bias in f(x) and the international fans leave nothing but nice comments but the koreans were very rude
It's a shame to see Kim Soo-hyun in such a role for a movie like Real. Dude is an amazing actor and he 100% proved it in "It's Okay to Not Be Okay (2020)", playing a vulnerable but yet kind and empathetic character that struggles with self-esteem and providing care for his autistic brother. He is moving into the right direction with his roles, my man went from Real to one of the most beloved K-Dramas in only 3 years.
USA: The Room - Victimized Great Man (made by egotistical man) China: Pure Hearts: Into Chinese Showbiz - Man of Opulence/Decadence (made by egotistical man) Korea: Real - Man of Perfection (made by egotistical man)
I remembered this movie. My local Indonesian TV channel aired this at midnight once, I watched it 'till the end and then sleep. I woke up questioning whether the movie I watched yesterday was a "real" movie or just my dream. I couldn't even remember the characters name to search it on google because they are all in Korean.
They aired the movie?? I suppose with heavy censorship. But if the uncensored one is like this I can't imagine the censored one would be like. There's plot holes within plot holes 💀💀 No wonder why you're questioning it yourself lmao
@@yumine_For movies with explicit scenes in it there is usually a post cut censored version, but if there wasnt, then the Indonesian movie censorship bureau would made the cut themselves even though it tampers with the film continuity.
"not directed by him but his cousin (allegedly)" had me rolling. That "now I'm going to enter you" has same energy as Weeknd's "stretch that tiny tiny p*ssy".
It's a retold version of the old saying "Anything is a poison in the right dosage" as allegedly said by Paraclesus (father of Toxicology) sometime in the 1500's...
Also a medical reality! Water and oxygen can both kill you. Tangent: in the 3 Body Problem books, there's a whole thought control subplot where a guy ends up believing that "water is toxic," and everybody is really confused because they weren't trying to make him believe that. It was supposed to be a clearly false baseline proposition. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, when all the characters would realize "duh, too much water _can_ be toxic! lol we really f'd that up!" But it never came, so I'm not sure if the author realized that water poisoning/intoxication is definitely a thing, and people have definitely died from it (such as Jennifer Strange, who was competing in a radio show contest). Or maybe he did, and just decided to let the reader figure it out. Tangent over. Always remember that "the dose makes the poison" when anti-vaxxers etc. start listing off the "scary sounding" ingredients in vaccines.
"Real is not a movie. It's just a commercial for a star" This is what makes me cringe whenever I see ads for Bollywood(or really, any blockbuster Indian movie) that sells the star over here. Whether it be SRK, Salman Khan, Rajinikanth, etc.(even one of my preferred actors Kamala Hasan isn't immune to this). When their movies just feel more like commercials for THEM rather than tell an interesting story.
'Radhe' can be said as the equivalent of these kind of films in bollywood. Bad screenplay, worse action choreography, poor camera work, subpar soundtrack...but FULL ON DIALOGUES about how COOOL Salman Khan is
This is why I appreciate the film VIP back in 2017, they actually made Lee Jong Suk, a heartthrob actor like Kim Soo Hyun, but it actually worked. They made Lee Jong Suk a convincing villain.
If you're interested in the actor, i recommend Secretly Greatly. It has everything that Real doesn't have (or that it has but better) and truly show his ability in acting. Good action choreography, good plot, zero sex exploitation, and him playing two vastly different roles.
@@onewinter9411 I can't understand it too, I was waiting for this movie when I heard he is going to the military and wow, I shouldn't have watched that. I am a fan of him from Dream High...
I would argue idol culture in Korea largely has the opposite problem. The whole thing is sexually repressed. I mean here we have hundreds of attractive young people, largely in their late teens and early twenties, and they're all supposed to stay single and be virgins because... I don't know. Part of it might be that fans want to believe they have a shot, but I think it's actually something more akin to a kind of puritanical outlook where people are victimized for engaging in normal human intimacy. I like the music and dancing a lot, but I find this aspect of the industry to be very upsetting. Yes, the guys have their shirts off a lot, but the moment you suggest you find it sexually alluring as opposed to just aesthetically pleasing, fans will jump down your throat for "sexualizing" their poor, innocent idol. It's a weird complex that reminds me of sexually repressed Catholics.
Japan as well, as all the angry fanboys discovering weather caster Saya Hiyama has a boyfriend demonstrated. But yeah, it's definitely a sort of "puritanical objectification."
I don’t think this detracts from his point. The industry imposes a puritanical control over the idol’s sexuality, presenting a virginal image so that fans imagine they have a chance and fosters a parasocial relationship. At the same time, they sexualize the idol so they can appeal to the fans’ lust in the first place.
I remember in the era of 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen girl groups they had a lot of sexy concepts (lyrics, choreo, MV, clothing). I believe there are tons of cases where they are forced to do sexy concepts even though they didn't like it. Some of the girls were even minors, the choreography was so sexually implied and you can clearly see them being uncomfortable, or there were acting scenes in the MV that had the intention of "subtly" implying sexual acts, all without the girls' knowledge. Regarding puritanical outlook, I do think it does have to do with Asian mindset and cultural values, "To stay pure before marriage " but it's weird, I do not think the fans (local and international) are as pure as they try to force these public figures to be (these idols are humans too right?). But in recent years there are more matured thinking idols and fans in contrast of such thinking (I think).
"Objectified" would have been a better way to describe it. Idols/stars are often looked at by an idealized image: the virginal sweetheart who can also be sexy and alluring, or as the ideal significant other.
Egosploitation goes to some extreme levels in a lot of Indian masala films as well. In India, the stars are still the biggest instrument for selling films.
If you told me that this was an art movie about a wealthy man trying to copy someone else who is less successful but more content in life to fill his crippling loneliness and numbness, all culminating in him having a drug overdose and fantasizing this power-trip before dying, I would have believed you.
The talk about the sexualization of idols and how terrible it and the parasocial conditions that arise from it makes me want a video about Perfect Blue. Good video
I wonder if you realize how this comment is based on the racist desexualization of asian men. do you have the same problem with the oversexualization of The Rock, or any other white action movie star?
My emotion was going from being amused to angry while watching this video, because I discovered Sulli's controversial s*x scene was in this movie. She didn't deserve to get attacked online due to this shitty movie.
This movie is basically Koren manga put to screen really. It follows the same basic formula. Main character is inexplicably super super amazing and untouchable and everyone spends all their time either fawning over him or trying to defeat him even though they don't stand a chance because it's impossible for him to be that amazing, yet he is. It can be amusing for a bit however it always follows the same tropes and gets tired super super fast.
on the oversexualization of idols: it is harmful but i would also argue it's ineffective. we don't want to see a man trying to be sexy for 2 hours, that has the opposite results. for a man to be attractive they need to give him heart and grit and personality. john wick wasn't perfectly coiffed when fighting, we don't want gratuitus shots of perfect abs. even though the oversexualization is not a tenth of what women face, especially in the k-idol industry, it's still sad that it leads to shittier movies you forget immediately
Here are some bad malaysian movie in that i can remember recently Badang (2018) A superhero flick starring a narcissistic rich man that he claimed would rival Black Panther (they were both released around the same time). Movie was so bad that according to some reviewers, they were met with surprise and confusion and laughter when he presents them the ticket. Also fyk, the director of the movie is a dean of a film school. The Amazing Titanman (also 2018) Also released around the same time with Badang (and Black Panther) and uhhhhh...... I don't even know if "recommending" this movie will means I contributed to your deteriorating mental health. I listened to a review of this movie in a local podcast, and and it broke all 3 of the host. And perhaps you too. Worse still, this movie was funded with taxpayer's money.
I absolutely no idea about Titanman but Badang, biggest mistake I've ever made. I watched the pirated copy and hoping to get a good laugh out of it but I spent most of the time cringing.
woah i dont know we Malaysian have our own take on Attack on Titan! just watched the trailer, next movie should be Badang Vs Titanmen (Cameo from cicakman)
I think he sort of reviewed Amazing Titanman in one of his older videos, if I'm not mistaken. Malaysia have no shortage of bad movies, but these 2 are a great start LOL...
Thank youuuuu for this video. Sorry for the overreaction but how is this still true even in 2023. And as someone who lives in a country where people greatly idolize South Korean everything, it’s so frustrating to see people actually falling for this cheap and objectifying trope!
really, sure i have 4-5 series K-Drama that i will aleays recomend but to prise them highly without watch it first...... naahhhh. maybe thats why i never understand what stan feels
In South Korea, an idol is considered low-class of entertainment. Even comedian is higher than idols. That is why when an idol is casted in a drama, most comments (apart from the stans) are negative , accusing the idols of “stealing jobs” from the actors.
This movie has few of the best actors from different generations. I don’t understand what made these people sign for this 😂.I absolutely love all the actors which is why I went to watch the movie but wtf was that. Btw Soo Hyun is not an idol, he did training for an idol but most actors do so in Korea, He is actually extremely good actor, Korea’s one of the highest paid actor,I think this is why they tried hard to make him look cool. But Honestly if you watch any of his dramas, he often act as cold person, don't go for his baby face, he mostly do serious roles. This movie just didn’t oversexualized him but other actors like late Sulli. I just don’t understand why he chose to did that, may be because It's his cousin's film.
Do you mean when he mentioned "Matinee idol" ? It has its own meaning actually! From my understanding, it means to when a male actor is idolised by female fans. Or it just means he is popular with female fans.
@@juliaxiao5320 because its no brainer and stupid. easy just to laugh it off especially if you watch it with your friend just for funzy and hangout with snack.
I think one of the best Kim Soo Hyun's movies is "Secretly, Greatly" where he plays an undercover spy from North Korea, and he gradually forgets his identity.
If you ever do do a video on idol culture in South Korea, I’d recommend looking at the movie White Melody of Death(sometimes Melody of the Curse). It’s reminiscent of The Ring, and deals a lot with toxic idol culture, although pretty much exclusively from the perspective of girl groups and idols
I couldnt finish this movie back when it came out. I was excited for Soohyun (who was booming at the time this was released) and Sulli (who was beloved Kpop idol), but I kept cringing and had to stop watching.
Well, Soo Hyun has been in amazing movies, being in an awful one is not something he needs to worry about. He is known for being amazing, and sometimes actors do projects that fail, That goes with the job, being an actor is risky
Out of curiosity, have you ever thought of watching and reviewing movies of Eastern European origin? They're super underappreciated movies given with just much of it influenced a lot of modern cinema (especially Polish films) and often have a very fascinating insight of the culture and a lot of Eastern Europes history
Ouchhh this one hurts me cause I'm a fan of Kim Soo-Hyun K-Dramas. Haven't heard of this movie before, which I guess was for good reason.😅 It's weird cus he actually make an 100 years old alien character in You Who Came from the Stars relatable (and trust me it's not an easy task, I've watched one episode of the Thai version & it's comical). I recommend watching It's Okay Not to be Okay to boost up his acting chops. He's actually good at playing drama scenes.
In the Philippines there is this popular fantasy franchise called Enteng Kabisote that swept the box office every christmas during the 2000s until it eventually fell off hard in the 2010s. Within that time it also had a bunch of crossovers with other properties for no discernible reason.
I couldn't agree more. There have been a few movies/shows that were ego exploitation in Korean films. Whenever I see them right away I quickly change what I'm trying to watch.
I once placed a bet with my friends (literature majors who watch noir films on a daily basis) if one of them could make me understand this film I would give them money. I won.
a movie about a hot guy being hot. i dont see the problem. when a movie exists and its not for me (sports, horror, war, cars, robits) i just ignore them and forget they exist. thats for THEM, not for me. but a film where i can see beautiful visuals, art, dancing, fighting choreo and a guy as hot as soo hyun? NAKED??????? let me grab my water and plantains, im ready for the SHOW!
Kim Soohyun is a very worshipped Korean celebrity across Asia. I remembered my friends and colleagues paying $300 just to watch him talk, cook, mop the floor (everything on the stage), generally being a cute husbando giving all the fujoshi audience the fantasy of being in a quite intimate domestic setting with such a dreamy pretty boy. This movie is nothing but predictable East Asian character worship - making Kim the center of attention, putting him in the edgiest scenes and setting as much as possible. It appeals more to senses than minds. Kind of like a bad movie compilation you submit for an audition application. Oi Hollywood, here is Asia's next übercool star! Pls pls pls pls pls cast him in your next blockbuster!
correct me if i'm wrong but isn't a woman more likely to fall for a guy if a tough guy shows their "weak" part, just slightly, only to shows a man is also a human. so with that in mind that kim soh hyun guy can achieve more if he show his sad backstory and he work really hard to achieve it, but add more drama into it, without saying it's him. just like "8 mile". well but i'm not expert tho so it is what it is lol
I would agree with that, even the marketing of idol these days is usually about them being rich or smart. I agree with people praising them because they're smart, but I don't understand why fans are so happy that their idol is born rich? I mean does it add some value or something? They're surely rich now with their idol career
@@KF-zb6gi It helps fulfill their "chaebol rich kid" imagines + internalized classism. It's a bit strange knowing that some people became idols to support their families (Sunmi for example).
When you said, "Harambe," did you secretly mean A*P*E? Or rather the title that I preferred, "Attack of the Giant Horny Gorilla?" If you did, then you got to slam two awful SK films at the same time. Best part for me was the, "It's 2am and I'm motion tracking his ass." That had me rolling. And on a more serious note, there is one thing I have noticed with the influx of idols into film. It is really hard to take the majority of them seriously as tough badasses. I keep expecting them to say, "not in the face! not in the face!" during every fight.
Oh my god this film was atrocious, thank god I wasn't the only one who thought this. I couldn't make it past the first 20 mins of runtime. Love Kim Soo Hyun in other kdramas and he was excellent, it's tragic he ended up in this project.
just my opinion but i think they wanted to give him the yim siwan treatment. him playing serious characters after being the "cute guy" to open up more chances in the industry - it worked perfectly for yim siwan because the producers and the actors are actually serious ABOUT THE STORY. as you said in Real they focused way more on his looks than actually on portraying the characters. yim siwan for example is a "pretty" boy aswell but he is not afraid to get sweaty and dirty and make "ugly" faces in his roles - which was obviously not favoured in the production of Real. :/ I really like the concept of the movie but it feels like a waste to create it in this way..
the backlash the lead actress (who was also an idol) Sulli got was terrible, she went through a lot because of the parasocial relationship people have with idols, may she rest in peace, she was such a talented woman
In terms of selling heartthrobs to another genre, VIP and The Childe so far has been the only successful attempts to it. Seen this and I was never convinced by it that Kim Soohyun has acting range beyond his usual. Edit: late realization that both VIP and The Childe were both directed by Park Hoon-jung, who also wrote I Saw The Devil.
Honestly kinda digged this movie. It was unintentionally “camp”, exaggerated and pushed some Korean film limits. Sure it had its downsides but it also had its moments. It’s almost like it’s so bad it’s good.
I’m definitely not trying to be a troll just help educate but things can’t be “unintentionally camp” camp is a conscious and deliberate satirical art form, calling things camp because they were bad but had an endearing effect on you is a misuse of the word
@@chuu0069 You're unintentionally wrong. Please read Susan Sontag's deep dive into "camp" in her Notes On "Camp", where she defines the two variations of camp as being naive (unintentional, pure) and deliberate (intentional, stylistic) : monoskop.org/images/5/59/Sontag_Susan_1964_Notes_on_Camp.pdf Sontag defines naive camp as failed seriousness; a grand artistic vision that gets a little out of control and enters into absurd territory. i.e., unintentional.
As a Brit I can't wait to see what your British pick will be. There are so many candidates: Confessions of a Window Cleaner, On the Buses, Keith Lemon: The Movie, Konga, Fat Slags, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Love Bite, the filmographies of Danny Dyer, Paul Tanter, and Richard John Taylor, the list is endless.
I don’t think KSH needs to worry at all about this film. He is a great actor and this film does showcase he can do action and he can play (and look like) a villain. He dances, sings, can act and do physically demanding scenes and he’s incredibly good looking. Yeah he will be just fine. I have a feeling Hollywood will come calling soon enough if he can speak English.
I have watched my share of arthouse films. Some of my personal favourite films are arthouse. They also can have "incomprehensible" plots. They rely on seemingly-random imagery. When we get flashbacks or we enter the characters' psyche, we don't get any warnings. At first watch, it can be difficult distinguishing what is past and what is present, what is reality and what isn't. The endings can be ambiguous. But, they never pretend to be "comprehensible". They want us to think about the stories. They are not meant to be escapist.. or, at least, not entirely. I have never watched Real myself. But, judging from your review, it seems the film tries to present itself as an escapist film with easy-to-understand story, even though it isn't.
I've never gotten into arthouse cinema, I'm a punk w reasonably middling tastes and it's always felt hard to get into. Would you have any recs for the casual-buff looking to explore that world?
@@baashasucks My favourite directors so far are Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrick. For me, if you want to start with Bergman (whose films are psychological with tinge of metaphysics here and there), I recommend Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal. They (and his other works) may not have the traits I mentioned above. But, story wise, they are very loaded and are not escapist. Most of his films are like that. But, don't go straight to Persona. While I do think it is his most artistic work, it is also very difficult to comprehend. If you want to start with Tarkovsky (whose films are very metaphysical and even spiritual), I recommend Ivan's Childhood and Solaris, even though I argue the former is easier than the latter. Don't go straight watching Mirror. Just like how Persona is Bergman's arguably most artistic work, Mirror is Tarkovsky's most artistic work.... and also most difficult work. I don't know if Stanley Kubrick is considered arthouse director or not. But, I do know his films The Shining and 2001: Space Odyssey are known to have "confusing" stories and are subject to interpretations. There is also My Dinner With Andre, directed by Louis Malle. It is basically an entirely dialogue-driven story about two friends having conversations about theatre and spirituality over dinner. The film does not take a stance, But, it forces you to consider the perspectives of both men. I also love The Man From Earth. While I do think it has subpar acting, music, directing and cinematography, I love the thought-provoking story. It is basically a sci-fi story that does not need any special effects, practical or CGI. Everything Everywhere All At Once - another personal fav of mine - also does feel arthousey to me, with its complicated story structure. But, I also argue that its fast pacing makes it even harder to comprehend. The audience is being rushed to understand the complex story. Sorry for the long answer. 😅
Even when I was young and far more unsophisticated with my enjoyment of entertainment, I was never into stardoms. I never watched films and TV shows solely for the actors. I was purely interested in the premises and stories. Now, I still have that attitude. The only difference is my adult self has favourite film directors. I have yet to get starstruck by actors. Yes, I do acknowledge that some actors are better than the others. But, there are many actors who can give great performances. Even the best actors don't always give good ones. And let's not pretend getting starstruck is all about admiring talents. Quentin Tarantino criticised Marvel films for killing movie stars. From all things to criticise about Marvel, that's what he chooses to criticises? It is obvious that Tarantino is not opposed to excessive commercialism in general. He is opposed to Marvel film's because it supposedly kills the star system.
I literally screamed after watching this movie.. He is such an amazing actor but will not recommend this movie to anyone.. If you wanna get angry for no reason, this is the best movie to watch.. It's the worst Korean movie I've watched 🤦🏻♀️😭😭
i think the purpose of this movie is showing how Kim Soo-hyun good at acting and showing his talents so that many directors see it and give him an opportunity and projects 😆.
In a movie named "Real," all you come away with is unreality. Irony at its finest. If you do make a video about idol culture, you have to talk about Perfect Blue and the Japanese idol industry, which is where Korea took their inspiration from and cranked it up to the logical endpoint of late stage capitalism.
If you want to subject yourself to some bad movies, KK Dheeraj, founder of K2K Production, is an infamous movie producer in Indonesia known for his low-budget horror movies, where one of the main selling points is inviting p-stars from the US and Japan. My favorite "controversy" from them is when they advertise a movie with Mr. Bean in the title. You can watch all of his bad movies on the K2K Production CZcams channel. KK Dheeraj still produces movies under his new film studio, Dee Company. And still produce horror movies, just less sexual and less bad.
For me I love this movie Real shows us his ability of acting . Most of the actor keep their looks cool and smart but for Soo Hyun he is the real actor who doesn’t mind his image as long as he can portrays the character he plays. Love and support.
I'd like to see your take on Kim Soo-Hyun's other roles, particularly a film like Secretly, Greatly where he gets to do a bit more than just look pretty.
I caught it in a cinema in Busan in 2017, the cinema was almost completely empty and I understood nothing, but it also didn't have subtitles and I did not know anything about it. Still enjoyed it. Bought the HK bluray later, excited to finally watch it with subtitles - literally zero difference, it did not make sense, also not after a third time. And I enjoyed it for what it is each time, a weird, atmospheric hotpot of ideas. Cinema is more than logic. People celebrate David Lynch for doing *exactly the same*. And I personally prefer "Real" over "Mulholland Dr." any day 😌
I’ll be honest, I really enjoyed this movie and watched it like 4 times when it came out. Sure the acting is hammy and the story is a mess, but the cinematography was amazing and the story and dreamy-ness of it was something I’ve never seen in a mainstream film in Korea. Plus it had some really good ideas and it has SO MUCH potential to be something subversive and interesting. I honestly blame the multiple directors for butchering this project.
Every time I see Kim Soo-hyun’s lightskin stare I literally burst in to laughter dude looks like babyface Zoolander. He seems like a nice guy just this ain’t your genre mate. Maybe do what Steve Carrell did, try feature-length drama or comedy first then shift to more serious roles from there as you age in to it.
Watching this, I am struck by one thing, this wasn't created for a story so much as an esthetic. Which is too bad, because there are films that do both well. The esthetic is striking, so props there
finally understood everything and man that feels so good! Like cracking the goddamn code. So for those who wanna give the movie a chance I will explain. It all comes down to three key point: first the drug called Siesta. As accident cinema said, this movie is written from the viewpoint of addicts. Sometimes things get unrealistic, and metaphors are not said but shown because that is how the characters experience the world. The drug plays a far more important role than you think, it’s not shown too much so I thought they brought it in to have the main character have to band tgth against the drug lord Cho Won-geun. However in actuality the entire plot Centers around it, or rather what it does to the characters. Because this is the second key point: there is three important characters that drive the plot. The main character mob boss Jang Tae-Yong, the Millionaire who imitates him, and the psychiatrist. They all have two things in common, namely that they were all addicted to the drug, and that they all survived it. In fact they are the only ones that did. And here is the crutch: they developed multiple personality disorder, and their new persona was not addicted to the drug. And yes they all had withdrawals, that’s why they went to rehab, but the mental dependency was severed and allowed them to move on. Soooo the three of them are actually six people yay. This is never explained, until at the very end the psychiatrist sort of points it out in an off hand comment, so it’s all hella confusing. Here is the third key point then: the plot follows Jang Tae-young and millionaire from their previous life, addiction then near fatal overdose, and the construction of their new personalities, rediscovery of their past, getting addicted again all while the action culminates in the battle against the mob boss Cho. Because of course they hate the drug that did this to them and the mafia that is selling it, so they fight it. And all this is shown in real jumpy timeline so haha. Basically Jang Tae-yeon used to be a freelance reporter who was investigating the drug, got in contact with the physiatrist, got addicted, overdosed and landed in the hospital. When he wakes up, he does so as another person, he has “killed” his old self and constructed a completely new life story as the ruthless mob boss Jang Tae-young. He completely believes it too. He works as a fixer for the mafia, rises through the ranks, and finally opens his own high end casino. Might seem unrealistic at first but then again he himself beliefs he’s been through some shit, he believes he is tough shit and thus his actions mirror that. The millionaire’s addiction story is never shared. It’s like he forgot all about his previous life, all except the last thing he saw before he almost died of the overdose: Jang Tae-yeon. Thus he developes an obsession with him, an obsession of BEING him. He spies on him, mirrors his every action, has his face reconstructed to be him etc. Basically his new persona doesn’t have a story so it’s trying to steal one. Now the physiatrist was the first victim of the drug Siesta. It’s unclear wether he meant to do it but he did: he invented the drug. And then he sold it to boss Cho. That’s how all this started. And although he too developed a new persona he could either remember or reconstruct his memories, and therefore he KNOWS what happened, knows how he survived it and why the other two did as well. Once you understand this it all becomes clear. From here on out the Jang Tae-yeon starts fighting the mob boss. He doesn’t seem to understand everything that has happened yet, but it’s clear that both for the monetary constraints of his casino and then increasingly for personal reasons ie the drug, he has to fight against him. The millionaire found out about this by spying on him like a creep and offers to help him in order to get closer to his life. They fight tgth for a while until finally the millionaire shows his now identical face and drugs the real Jang Tae-young by giving him a drugged chewing gum (that’s the scene in the bathroom). He eats one two, so they both become addicts again. That same night the real Jang Tae-yeon’s car is rammed by boss Cho, who thinks he’s the fake because his so out of it. He shoots him, but he survives. There is a jump to some time later, he has recovered, mostly, and in the meantime the millionaire version of him has taken over, but isn’t exactly doing a good job. Jang Tae-yeon has found out about his past as journalists and yet also tries to get his mob boss life back or more importantly his gf that was taken by boss Cho when he was shot. But he’s struggling with the addiction. He finally recalls how he met the physiatrist before, that he’s the one making the drugs and the one that got him addicted in the first place. He goes to meet him, and finds his gf there, dying of an overdose on the drug. There were some hints before that she’s also addicted and apparently the physiatrist wanted to study her and the other addicts there, to see if they can also survive and what set him and the two others apart. Jang leaves crying after gf dies and drives back to the casino. That’s where boss Cho has infiltrated the place to take down millionaire Jang tae-yeon in the meantime. So there goes the fighting scene from their drugged perspective. At the end millionaire gives up and walks away. It looks like he’s walking on water towards the distant skyscrapers, then drops away. Honestly, I loved this movie. It took me about 5 watches before I started to understand and even now I still don’t get all of it and that’s why I love.
By your summary, the movie reminds me of 'Rocky Handsome', which was just an excuse to show off John Abraham. The original movie, 'The Man From Knowhere', was a great South Korean film though.

Let me know what bad movies from your country you'd recommend!
All filipino movies are bad! Fight me.

Wow. So people really never gave up on brutalising that *woman for anything and everything until she died. Bloody sad.
When I watched this movie, I couldn't understand anything and the sheer amount of sexualization... I'm glad I watched it alone

That's just two sides of the same coin.
"Objectified" would have been a better way to describe it. Idols/stars are often looked at by an idealized image: the virginal sweetheart who can also be sexy and alluring, or as the ideal significant other.
Egosploitation goes to some extreme levels in a lot of Indian masala films as well. In India, the stars are still the biggest instrument for selling films.

on the oversexualization of idols: it is harmful but i would also argue it's ineffective. we don't want to see a man trying to be sexy for 2 hours, that has the opposite results. for a man to be attractive they need to give him heart and grit and personality. john wick wasn't perfectly coiffed when fighting, we don't want gratuitus shots of perfect abs. even though the oversexualization is not a tenth of what women face, especially in the k-idol industry, it's still sad that it leads to shittier movies you forget immediately

just my opinion but i think they wanted to give him the yim siwan treatment. him playing serious characters after being the "cute guy" to open up more chances in the industry - it worked perfectly for yim siwan because the producers and the actors are actually serious ABOUT THE STORY. as you said in Real they focused way more on his looks than actually on portraying the characters. yim siwan for example is a "pretty" boy aswell but he is not afraid to get sweaty and dirty and make "ugly" faces in his roles - which was obviously not favoured in the production of Real. :/ I really like the concept of the movie but it feels like a waste to create it in this way..
the backlash the lead actress (who was also an idol) Sulli got was terrible, she went through a lot because of the parasocial relationship people have with idols, may she rest in peace, she was such a talented woman

My favourite directors so far are Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman and Stanley Kubrick.
@@grouchung3273 thanks man, I've heard good things and it looks amazing!!
@@daanachmad4032 don't apologise for the long answer, it was a great one and now I've got a robust foundation to start with. cheers, kind stranger!!!
The movie is:
"So what the movie is going to be?"
"Yes"
(Hetalia Norway voice) Nice with the cheats.
He is opposed to Marvel film's because it supposedly kills the star system.
i had the dubious honour of watching this in cinemas in korea in 2017. It was a wild ride and a shared experience among everyone present hahahha
oh, someday we'll be getting Race 3, I cannot wait🤣🤣🤣
The problem is ghar ki murgi dal barabar
Kk Dheeraj has improved somewhat.
For me I love this movie Real shows us his ability of acting . Most of the actor keep their looks cool and smart but for Soo Hyun he is the real actor who doesn’t mind his image as long as he can portrays the character he plays. Love and support.
"he enters super Saiyan mode" LMFAOOOOO god I love this channel. keep it up bro
And I personally prefer "Real" over "Mulholland Dr." any day 😌
2:01 this just made him look like a child instead of being a badass.
R.I.P. CHOI JIN-RI [AKA SULLI] FROM THE K-POP GIRL GROUP f(x), SHE WILL BE MISSED. 🇰🇷💔🎬🎥😇🙏😢😭
"The dose makes the poison" is one of the best things I think I've ever heard in my life.
I get the vibe of "I just saw a Nicolas Winding Refn movie and I can do that for this guy"
“It’s 2am and I’m motionless-tracking this ass”😂😂😂😂
It legitimately made me chuckle when race 3 and Salman khan appeared in the intro. That's not even his worst movie. That would be Radhe or PRDP.
Great video! I hope you do more tokusatsu and Japanese V-Cinema
Agree! Time to look back at childhood memories
The esthetic is striking, so props there
We’re about to enter new territory of films to pan on this channel. I’m ready for the journey!
why was the summary kind of swag? the dance number with the red suit looked like a cool and fun scene ksjdjshdjshd
yea the idol system when it comes to their entertainment business is such dystopian
I'm glad I didn't watch that movie but seeing the fight scene was funny as fck 😂
Directed by his cousin..??? Oooohhh..... That.. oh.... Yikes.. That sure does add a new level
finally understood everything and man that feels so good!
But in the previous scenes we saw the window planes of the casino breaking, and the cityscape view behind it. So I think what happened was that he walked to the edge of the building and dropped down, to his death. What happens to Jang tae-yeon is never shown, though arguably he will inevitably also dies from the drug, lest he develop another personality. End
I watched this about 2-3 times trying to sincerely understand what the hell was going on.
A shame as they are great actors, the movie was just off
I wish I saw Yang's facial expression when he tried to understand the movie but got confused instead...that would have been funnier
I don’t mind what you say , but D -war made my childhood . It is also good for me . Though I thought it was a Chinese movie , in my childhood .
Honestly, I loved this movie. It took me about 5 watches before I started to understand and even now I still don’t get all of it and that’s why I love.
By your summary, the movie reminds me of 'Rocky Handsome', which was just an excuse to show off John Abraham.
The original movie, 'The Man From Knowhere', was a great South Korean film though.
i tried watching this movie after watching few youtube shorts edits from this movie but immediately dropped it after first scene because this actor took off all his clothes, i can't watch this brilliant actor in such type of role
