Restoring A Mid Century Classic: The Advent 5012

- The large Advent loudspeaker was released in 1968, designed by legendary sound engineer Henry Kloss. His goal was to create a budget friendly speaker that could compete with models that were far more expensive. The original Large Advent (OLA) went on to develop a cult following and garnered attention for it's incredible sound when stacked two pairs high. In the 70's the speaker was updated to the New Large Advent (NLA) with a different tweeter placement and updated woofer. In 1980 Advent released the 5002 and 5012 versions right before being acquired by Jensen who kept the models around for a few years before discontinuing them in the mid 80's.
A few months back, I was lucky to pick up a set of the rare 5012 variant locally for a good price but they had some issues, the main one's being that the woofers needed to be refoamed and the woofer in the later production run speaker was frozen. Because one of them was manufactured before and the other manufactured after Jensen bought the company, they had a few differences in the fit and finish as well as the type of driver that was used. While refinishing the cabinets and updating the crossovers with new capacitors, I also decided to replace the grill cloth. Overall, these are the best sounding and best looking pair of speakers that I've restored to date.
They are currently listed for sale because I do not have the space to keep them (very sad).

My name is Matt. I live in Washington State and create content around vintage stereos and other audio equipment. I approach the hobby from a technical standpoint and am learning about circuit design and reparing and calibrating amps, turntables, speakers, etc. I really appreciate a good aesthetic and the vintage stuff fits my taste.

I’ve got these speakers listed for sale locally here: facebook.com/marketplace/item/1186783189410116?ref=search&referral_code=null&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A287d1f51-5937-49bf-a625-2e6f2a10c98c
It is very "refreshing" to see a young man with so much love for old audio equipments ! Congrats !
Amazing! I'm glad to hear that! I sure do love this old gear. Thanks for watching!
New crossover parts more overall clarity = less smearing. Always worth
Agree
I tried restoring some Infinity Sterling SS 2003s recently. Replaced the foam surrounds though, once installed, one woofer was blown. Both would move without scraping. I had heard about not buying speakers with drivers that won't move. This was a MESSY process for me, I spent a week picking glue off my fingers. Beautiful work on these spectacular Advents! Genuinely impressed with your knowledge and skill. Love seeing people who truly appreciate audio. I love large monitor speakers like these!
Oh man, that sounds like a frustrating journey. Yea, gotta check all of the drivers before purchase, I forgot to on these...Thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I had a pair of those playing through my Yamaha CA-800. They sounded great and, important to my wife, looked like furniture. 😂. Great work, Matt!
No way! That's super cool. If they're still around when I get your CA-800 going again I will hook them up in honor of yours! They sure do look incredible, I can see why your wife liked them! Thanks for watching, Edley.
this is my new favorite vintage audio channel! great content!
Ayye that really means so much to me ❤️ I'm glad you like the content!
Nice restoration of the Advents! I am the original owner of a pair of Advent %002's. I did basically the same restoration on mine as you did yours ( re-foamed the woofers and because mine were in a not so well environment of storage for 12 years I also replaced the tweeters and recapped the cross overs). My cabinets needed replacing. The end product was incredible so I carried it one step farther and made a second pair using original woofers and new simply speaker tweeters. The reasons for the new tweeters in the original was because the FerroFluid had gotten like paste and the tweeters were not sounding as they should. In the end I double stacked my Advents and believe me the sound is INCREDIBLE. If you like the single pair try the double stack. I am powering them with a Realistic Sta-2100 and tried my Sansui 9090. Both sound great in a neutral sound on the receiver settings. Thanks for the video and keeping the Advents alive.
Nice! I'd love to try some stacked advents at some point. Sounds like you put a lot of work in for your two pairs! Good on ya!
I love these speakers look the sound is great too . When I had mine I found a different set and stacked them. I sold them in the beginning of the year I really enjoyed the experience.
For real! One of the best looking speakers IMO I've always wanted to try stacked advents so maybe I will give it a rip some day. They sound good but I have a few other speakers on my list that I'm more intrigued by. I feel like the stacked advents are so iconic though that I have to try it eventually haha.
VERY nice work. I liked the new grill cloth best :)
Thank you! I'm glad you like them!
I'm a sucker for those well edited snap cuts 😅😊
Haha you've fallen for my trap! lol. Thanks for watching!
@@MattDealy 🤣 I did, yes. Regret it? Nope!
Well done, Matt.
Great restauration as always! Really enjoying the enthusiasm in which you present your videos. I recently restored a set of Philips MFB active servo monitors from 1974 (22RH544). Complete recap + bias and motion feedback adjustment. Now they stay cooler and sound better in the mid/high range. The philips MFB range of speakers are fun active speakers to tinker with and learn from. And after 50 years they really need some love and care put into them. Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank you! I'm glad that it comes through :) Ohh I've heard of those speakers! I will have to try and find a pair. Sounds like a fun project. Thank you for watching! So cool that these videos can reach around the world.
Well done mate. My first thought was, OK, another typical vintage video, but everything you did was well thought out and quality. Then you provided more detail than most and were extremely efficient about it. Then i realized you put a lot of thought into the editing and pacing of the whole thing. Very impressed. I enjoyed it.
I have no electronics skills, but I've refoamed a few speakers. I still have the NLAs, bull nose. They sound great. I also have the Laureates. They are very easy to listen to and are my favorites for poor recordings, because they smooth over problems better than a lot of other speakers I've heard. I've listened to a lot of reggae on those things...I still have some baby Advent III to refoam, but it's been years and they're so far down on the to do list, it will probably be a few more years until that gets done. I've wanted to sell my Advents for years to try new speakers and free up space, but i haven't been able to part with them yet. Recently, I got the HECO Celan Revolution 3. They're very good, but i think the NLA's are still competitive at about half the price, though it's apples and oranges for the most part...
I don't know what you did with the recording of the speaker comparisons, but the differences were clear, as well as the changes after you upgraded the crossovers. I've heard hundreds of sound demos on CZcams, and i always say, why am i doing this, there is so much compression, it''s probably impossible to hear what's really going on - but i could clearly hear it in your video. Again, impressed.
Well this went longer than I thought. Looking forward to the next vid. - Cheers
Awww, this is incredibly sweet. I put over 30 hours into editing, scripting, and planning this video so it means a lot to hear that it's been noticed! I love making videos almost as much as I love fixing old stereo gear.
Nice! All of the Advents were so listenable. It's one of my favorite things about them. HAha the to do list must be long!
I'm glad that the sound comparison was well received as well! I put effort into making it sound as clear as possible!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words ❤️
@@MattDealy My pleasure. Keep up the good work!
Dude, This was awesome, I loved this video, Great job.
Ayye thank you! I'm glad you liked it :)
Stumbled upon your Facebook listing for these and was pleasantly surprised to see this pop up when I wanted to CZcams them ha. Love your enthusiasm and if I had the money at the moment would've loved to snag them!
Definitely subscribed and going to creep your Facebook listings in the future
Oh sweet! That's amazing! I appreciate you subscribing! I will list more stuff locally but I also have a website in the works and sell on eBay for stuff that is easier to ship! Thanks so much for watching!
definitely noticed the high end change after recap.
For sure! They got a bit brighter and more even across the board it seemed.
Nice job Matt they looked as good as they sound !!!
Thanks Gene!
Nice work!
Thanks so much, Tennyson!
I am restoring a pair of 4002s, great speakers
Nice! Those are sweet! What all are you doing to them?
@@MattDealy refoam and recap, they’re unfortunately vinyl wrap instead of veneer so theres not much I can do to the exterior. I was super confused with the 7 and 7.5uf capacitor and their decision to change it when Jensen bought the company, but I stuck with the 7uf.
@@SmithFitzgerald-uz8fy Nice! Unfortunate that they're vinyl. You can buy new vinyl wrap for them but it likely won't match what's on there already so you'd have to completely re wrap both speakers but it's fairly easy to apply. My guess is that the 7.5uf may have been cheaper somehow or maybe it was a slight change in the crossover point to adapt to the round magnet woofer and tweeter that they started using.
To my ears the Tannoys really just sound better. Its close, but that's my ruling! haha
The Same here
I'm glad to hear that haha. I love those things. Can't wait to get around to updating them.
Love the video! When are you going to refresh the grill covers on the Tannoy speakers?
Thank you! haha you're out here asking the real questions lol. I have a whole slew of upgrades planned for them including all new cabinets so I haven't done much with the existing cabinets because it feels a bit pointless haha. I'll hopefully get around to the upgrades either later this year or early/mid next year. They sound great but I know there is more performance to get out of them.
@@MattDealy They definitely have a warm tone and sound great from the video. I need to be on the lookout for a pair. Can't wait to see what you do with them!
I own a pair of Advent /1 which are a slightly smaller NLA and they sound good, so im guessing the 5012 share that sound, but to me the Tannoys sound way more open, but i was already expecting that. Cabinet size may come into play also. I dont what size driver the Tannoy has, but i'd guess its 12"-15" and perhaps full range driver?
Nice! Yea these probably sound very similar, just a bit more range in the low end. I agree, off the bat, the Advents sound really bright and better but with more detailed music the tannoys still sound more musical and find more detail than the advents even though they sound less detailed. Just lovely to listen to. These cabinets have the Monitor Gold 12" dual concentric in them so a two way speaker in one driver. Big fan of the sound. Similar to an altec 604 but without the little multicell horn in the center of the woofer. Thanks for being subscribed for 8 months and coming back! Means a ton to me ❤️
I just found three pair in a storage unit. I have a real problem. i bought those 2 other pair and Sansui 5000X
@@Red-yx5yo wooow that’s so cool! I’d be freaking out with a find like that haha
I like better tannoy not recaped. They sound really similar to my (all original) pioneer hpm 40 MK2.
Nice! Yes, the Tannoys have a very nice sound to them. Very musical/warm and yet very detailed at the same time. I've heard good things about the HPM 40s as well! Thanks for watching!
Sounded muddy before recapping
Agreed!
Tannoys have better range but both sound great.
Good catch! They do have better range. They are supposed to go down to around 35 hz where the advents roll off a few hz higher. Thanks for watching!
A had no bass b had lot of bass
Interesting, I wonder if that was because A was recapped and that brightened up the high end more whereas they were muddier before the recap. Thanks for watching!
