    When I took early retirement at age 56, I was overweight and out of shape. I started going to exercise classes. I go to an exercise class 5 days a week. During the pandemic, I consulted with a nutritionist and started a food plan which I still follow. I'm very happy with my food plan. I am very well nourished. My father, who was in frail health his last 2 years, had my brother and me to assist him. I am alone. I don't have children to depend on. I must keep mobile as I age. I think it's important to keep socially, physically and intellectually active as I age. I also believe service, any kind, is important. In addition to exercise classes, I have 4 volunteer gigs and go to a book club and take other classes. I travel (which is how I found your channel). I quit using "have to" when I realized it made me feel like a victim. I'm not. I make choices. When I quit using "have to" it made me feel so much better. Downtime is especially important for us introverts. Great vid!

    I'm 72 and solo (widowed) for almost 7 years now. One of my favorite things is sitting on my back porch hearing and watching the wind in the trees and the bayou flowing by, not to mention the alligator who passing by occasionally. I don't really leave home very much but I do go to Planet Fitness 3 mornings a week. I used to be a truck driver so I love my home time now. I'm very happy with my cat and my hobbies and spending time with my son and his family who live next door. As my grandpa used to say, It's a wonderful life when you don't give up.

    At over 70 I can say that healthy habits I've developed are napping, eating mostly meatless meals, going to bed early and getting up before sunrise. Socially, I've opened our home to hikers (We live near a major hiking trail - the PCT ) and for 6 months of each year hikers from all over the world stay with us for a day or two. In the last 2 months we've hosted over 50 hikers. Some injured hikers have stayed up to two weeks. We now have hikers coming back to visit us when they're in California! Never had children so these hikers have become our kids. My husband hates to travel so I take solo trips with my tiny trailer when I need some healthy me time away. I meet girlfriends for lunch often and love just puttering around the house. I actually find grocery shopping entertaining! There are always people to chat with in grocery isles. We have 4 dogs and I know that is very good for our mental health. My husband spends most of the day in his workshop restoring vintage tractors and chatting with his tractor buddies on the Internet. The Internet is a wonderful place for chatting with like-minded people and learning new things. I follow video blogs of hikers, scientists, philosophers and watch 70s music videos. I've changed my musical tastes by listening to groups of various genres and it really has been mentally stimulating! Since Covid, we've made a big change to how we socialize. We completely stopped socializing with couples! We now just have our own friends rather than try to adapt to couples. That was a big positive change for us both. And we stopped going to "parties". Both of us are introverts who prefer staying home. Retirement has allowed us to make most of these positive changes. We are enjoying the heck out of being retired!

    First of all, love your channel! I'm 63 and about 5 months ago I began a regular yoga practice. It has really helped with balance, flexibility, and most of all, a commitment to a healthy habit. In addition, I started lifting weights on a regular basis. After just a few months, I have muscle tone again! To me, the mental health benefit is just as important as the physical benefit. It's not so easy when you're in your sixties, especially if you have never been a lover of exercise, but the reward is so sweet. Best wishes in finding a studio and building a new community. I hope you love it!

    I am a 73 y o solo woman. I don’t do sports but I walk my dog twice daily, enjoy learning new things, and spend time with friends. I have many neighbors in their 80s. I watch as they lose the option to drive, must use a walker to get around and eventually cannot live alone. This is my motivation to stay active.

      Good on you! I am 57 and have a lack of energy that has haunted me all my life. I go for a few short walks a day, 5 squats, 10 sit to stands, 4 bridges - on my bed. I love improving myself. Life is great!

      ​@@geraldinetoughey9622Same, sometimes my depression sucks the motivation. I am not vegan but prices in Australia 🇦🇺 are skyrocketing so I am trying to cook from scratch and freeze etc. I sit too long and I know this but cannot seem to work up the motivation to walk 😂 🇦🇺💜

    Oh, and ‘allowing’ myself to read during the day. Having been told to ‘ get my nose out of that book’ as a youngster, it’s a hard habit to develop, but I get such joy from losing myself in other lives, learning new things and generally being entertained without a screen.

    I think your ‘GET TO’ attitude is powerful! I just tried it out when I walked to the grocery store because I had to give up my 20 year old car. I told myself that I “GET TO” have exercise. You’re definitely on to something, by golly! 👍

    I'm 66 and went plant-based 14 months ago and the difference is night and day. You'll find your energy levels are significantly higher. Amazing what our bodies can do with the right fuel.

      It’s always so interesting to realize how individual each of us are! I’m almost the opposite (food-wise) of your diet. I’m 65, went keto at 62 and then low-carb last year, and I have more energy and feel better than I have in years. I live on a farm, so I keep very active, especially at this time of year. I wonder if the farm chores I do regularly require more protein and fat? Anyway, it just struck me how everyone is so different - I’m very happy that plant-based works so well for you!!

    When my daughter went off to college I used to send her a text at a random time every day. It said “Stretch. Moisturise”. Many years later she told me how lovely it was knowing that I thought of her, and that I didn’t want to know what she was doing every minute of the day!

    I love your channel! I am a meat eater who has gotten into meatless meals and if you like Indian food, I highly recommend tandoori cauliflower. It's easy and simple!
    Also I am really into gratitude and I LOVE your "get to" brain hack. I am a voluntarily single 40yo woman and I'm constantly trying to remember to be grateful for all the small things. The tiniest things have to be remembered. I'm grateful for your channel, it's such a shining light of positivity. ❤

    It’s funny (in a good way) how we all turn corners in our life and change our ways… I’ve been plant based most all my life and I just recently discovered that meat tastes good and when it’s been grass feed and grass finished, it’s good for my body. So that’s my new adventure. Also, I’ve become a human-being (sit for a while, look around outside and do nothing) instead of a human-always-doing. What a nice and content feeling it gives me 😃 Happy thoughts!

    As far as new habits go, you mentioned a few that I am working on: plant-based eating, and stretching. I also want to spend more time reading books. Just ten pages per day. Also, as a supplement to your positive mindset, I want to be more careful about who I associate with. I only want supportive and uplifting people in my life. A very good friend reminds me regularly that I will become like the five people I associate with most often.

    79: I’ve created a yoga series that works for me and I can do at home. Most important part is getting down and up safely without any tools - like a chair. If I ever fall while walking a trail I can get up alone and without anything to pull or push from. Nice video/mindset.

    You are a minimalist. Minimalism isn't cutting down to 4 plates and 6 books. It's about ridding yourself of the things that cause you stress. Like that shed in my back yard that things go to wait for the day I may find a use for them. It gets stressful and I need to take a whole day to clean and get rid of "stuff" that I should have gotten out of my life long ago. All your books and treasures make you happy so it is YOUR minimalism. Getting rid of the things you love would be stressful. 😊 Love your channel and will be checking out some of the sites you suggested 😊

    I am 71 and went plant based in 2013. I had some health concerns and I wanted to see if I felt better. the first year was a struggle to find recipes for meals that I would enjoy. I had no interest in eating salad everyday and I wanted to bake my favourite recipes. So long story much abbreviated it is 11 years later, I do feel better and so I stayed with it. That's just my story and I'm not encouraging anyone to follow that same idea. people should do what's best for them. Enjoy hearing your thoughts with these videos. Ty4 all the group recs!

    My favorite is “accepting help” . How many times have we helped others during our younger years. It’s a double blessing when we accept offers for help. Also, you are wise to know your limitations and not risk possibly hurting yourself. Thank you Jen from the Panhandle of Florida .

    I'm 58 and solo, and I agree with you about the positive mindset. I choose to be positive in the way that I look at things - attitude is everything! I also agree that we are not meant to eat only plants - a good nourishing eating plan of healthy proteins (meat, fish), fats (e.v. olive oil, ghee/clarified butter) and fruits & veggies is probably the best choice I could make for a healthier me as we age. About four years ago, I was very obese and sedentary. Through lockdown until now, just by walking for things I need that are within walking distance and making better choices, I'm active daily and back down to a healthier weight, although I no longer own a scale. The smaller clothes I had to buy were enough for me to know I must be doing something right! Yes, I "get" to go walking, and it is a blessing to be active. I found your channel while watching others in order to grow my own art channel. Your tips about living solo, health and finances are inspiring - keep up the good work!

      Hi Sydney! Skye is a mini Bernedoodle, she's 3 years old and I got her from a local breeder on the Island. She and her big sister Quinn (the cat) get along quite well and guard my house and yard for me...except they allow rabbits to overrun my garden for some reason...

    I am silver and solo too. I am just a few years younger than you are, but I can say "Yes" sitting at a desk all day and lounging around in the evening sure takes a toll on your muscles and bones. I also feel the same way you do about watching negativity and the news, especially on CZcams. I take breaks from the news and negative CZcams channels.

    I am a 71 yr old silver and solo. Always have been solo. Raised 3 children alone. They now live in different parts of the country. I love my fruits and veggies. One of my favorite thins about spring and summer is fresh fruits and veggies. I love gardening and being outside. I canned lots of tomatoes last year. Love cooking with all my fresh greens.

    My husband and I are both 75. We walk 2 miles each and every day. In addition, I do exercises to keep my knees strong.

    I’m in my 70s and I can recommend Callanetics as an exercise routine only draw back is you have to get on the floor. Which reminds me to go and buy a lambs wool rug. All the best.

    I struggle with the stretchy things. I have a couple of chronic pain conditions and it's a challenge to find routines that I can do on a routine basis that don't cause pain. And then when I do have pain, it's a challenge to even move on those days. It always seems it's one stretch forward, three stumbles back.
    The "I get to" mindset was something I adopted when I moved six months ago. It's an amazing little shift that creates a totally different perspective on life. I have two diabetic cats who require twice daily shots. While I do "have" to give them insulin, I "get to" take care of them and give them a good life.
    I am almost to the "I get to" point with cleaning their litter boxes. I finally found a litter that's actually nice to work with and the cats like it. Win-Win.

    I have found April, a trainer, and her mom, very helpful with CZcams chair yoga for seniors. I'm not as flexible as fit April, but a bit more than her mom, so it's a very comfortable space. I do it daily, about 15 minutes. Their cat shows up, too! I recommend it to enjoy and keep flexible. It's so calming, no pressure. I get to do it!

    My favorite meatless meal is a thin crust pizza with onions, mushrooms and black olives.
    The exercise I added is a walking pad that I use 3 times a day.
    I don't watch TV other than to get a weather report and I minimize contact with negative people.

      @@deniserichard5613 it is similar to a treadmill but doesn't incline and doesn't go as fast as a treadmill. Light enough that it's easy to move if necessary.

      @@deniserichard5613 I purchased a Citysports walking pad from Amazon. If you put it on a carpeted floor you will need to put something underneath to protect the carpet. I purchased a BesWin chair mat also from Amazon to put under it.

      Me too. Doctor insists on a ten minute walk daily. With one of those, I can maybe double that ... and watch Silver and Solo at the same time. Bonus!

    Another thought: accepting help allows others to do their good day for the day, as well as getting the help and meeting another good person who might turn into a new friend. We will need friends of all ages and kinds as we go through life, especially in our later years when we might be more isolated.

    I really like the idea of saying 'I get to' instead of 'I have to' and I'm going to start saying that now.
    I do often remind myself how lucky I am to have a roof over my head, a comfortable bed to sleep in at night and the money to be able to pay my bills and buy my food, etc. I work hard for that money, but I could be a lot worse of and that's what I try to remember whenever I start feeling sorry for myself; for instance, when the weather is horrible and I have to go out to work.

    You’re a natural storyteller. It’s a gift. Your descriptive imagery. I’m using it on my new CZcams channel. Plus your pacing and tone. Thank you. Also, meat causes inflammation and it’s even worse when coupled with simple processed carbs. The effect on the body, that is. Im the same. Lots of one-ingredient foods. All the time. That’s the trick. Most things can have just one ingredient. Cutting out the inflammation-causing foods has played a tremendous dose in my mobility. I couldn’t even walk this time last year. Literally ..

    You have a very positive attitude !!! Gratitude is the best antidepressant!
    I went low fat vegan last fall because I was warned about being close to diabetic. I found out that I actually love the strong flavours and spiciness of Mexican and Indian cooking. (Added bonus; the extra pounds just VANISHED with NO HUNGER!) Lots of interesting food to be discovered there, plus it’s very healthy to boot! Good luck with the plant based eating ❣️

    Yes I've noticed my hips are feeling tighter...I need to start stretching and walking more. I'm 64. And tired of the negative news too. My dad bought me a life subscription to national geographic magazine when I was 5. So I been getting one a month since 1965..lol.😮 Haven't saved them all though. 😅...I like when you said CULTIVATING HAPPINESS....what a great phrase!! it's what we all must do.

I try to do the same thing; be grateful that I wake up every day, have things to do, from difficult to pleasurable and a life to live. I am glad you accepted help taking the kitty litter to your car. Rather than possibly pulling a muscle, you remain strong enough to do something requiring that kind of strength when you really have to and no one else is around! BTW, you have really become a natural on camera!❤

    Hi, I am 59yrs old and I too lost my job after 32yrs when I was 51yrs old. I since have had 3 jobs because I ventured and tried something totally different. I spent 3yrs working at two of the locations and now I am on my second year at my current job which I enjoy. I have been trying to incorporate the " I get to go to work or I get to walk my dog " etc... It does feel better saying it that way but I cannot wait until I get to say " I get to do whatever I want today " Lol...

    I love your honesty !
    Yes, my job b 4 i retired at 56 was sitting and getting up and down, and then coming home to basically eat dinner and watch tv,repeat.
    Weekends gardening, dog long gone and i gave up walking as it feels strange and sometimes scary in the evening esp even in so called safe NZ..
    THEN , i got plantar faceitis, wow the pain in my right foot !
    I know its due to inactivity !!
    So im planning to walk more once my foot feels a bit better after physio ! Im sure i did it to myself !
    Anyhoo, trying to be more active 😮 though i love YTube....
    Luckily i have a big garden which is dependent on me !

    Thanks for the tips , sometimes you do get stuck in a routine that gets a bit old, nice to shake it up a bit ❤

    What's helped me be ok with getting help is being short (5'3)..... In a grocery store, I often can't reach items on the top shelf.... so I hover until someone taller comes along and they are always happy to help....

    Jen you are blessed! I love your positive spin on life, thank you for sharing this! I too am blessed and I too love the positives that life offers all of us. I am preparing to retire this year at 62. I don't do much social media but CZcams has so much to offer. Your channel is on my list of positives. Like you, I too have had some major stress previously in my life. I choose to remain positive and enjoy all that life brings my way rather than dwell on what has happened in the past. I can pick and choose to watch anything. I choose the positive! Leaning plant based is something we should all strive for, I agree - #1. Gardening is another positive habit I am choosing - like Mr. Putter and Tabby - puttering around the garden is something I'm learning to do, #2. Walking more and incorporating strength building exercises daily (that's #3). Genealogy is #4 - this is my quiet time exploring my ancestors past. A mental health habit and it's fun! Cooking more - eating out less would have to be #5 - this is time I spend with my sons in the kitchen, talking and sharing our thoughts - doesn't get much better than that! My last item, #6, will be another mental health habit and that is spending more time with family and friends. I just don't do enough of this and it's always a wonderful, positive way to spend time, often doing something like hiking, cooking or just enjoying good conversation. There you have it Jen - my six healthy habits that I am working towards in a very positive manner. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us all to remain in the positive and explore all that this amazing life has to offer!

    Wow. The whole 'niksen' thing I've been doing for some years without knowing it had a name. I do it when I'm having stressful days. It's my way of catching a break from the external world. I've actually created a special 'coffee nook' in my apartment where I sit and stare out over the strait.

    My favourite meatless Monday meal is a lentil and rice casserole. Yummy with a bit of hot sauce and cheese. Can also be a crock pot meal. Very satisfying and comforting.

    There are some wonderful plant cooking sites that are positive and easy and fun.
    Berta Jay is one. Easy fun and soft spoken older woman.
    Well your world is another. When he started his channel he was single now newly wed. Easy simple and delicious
    Rainbow plant life is fun loving delicious and energetic. Lives in Hawaii
    My favorite although not vegan has both meat and plant recipes is Spain on a fork. Really good. Good mix of both plant only and some with meat.

    56-ish and retired for 1 year. I wasn’t sure how I would adjust and fill my time. My part time job gives me great positive social interactions, but I love the idea of curating more positive social media! I have made it my mission to spread good energy when I’m out and about. I volunteer walking dogs at the local humane society. It’s great exercise for me and the dogs! It’s been great to keep a more positive perspective.

    Positive attitude and Gratitude makes big difference in all areas of life!!!!
    I am 71…I’ve been solo most of my adult life… even married 20 years to a long distance trucker, I was alone most of those years until children arrived, then we divorced and children left the nest. I am retired from medical profession. I keep busy with various projects through helping others, socializing and traveling.
    Bored is a word my parents/ grandparents didn’t allow to be spoken in their homes.
    I carried in the tradition as my children have as well.
    Keep moving forward on your journey ❤️❤️❤️

    I’m with you about CZcams! I only look at videos that help and encourage. The same with Facebook. I belong to gardening groups, cooking, sewing , groups that help me to grow. I eliminated several people from my Facebook that I felt didn’t contribute to making my life better. I go along with all that you said. I’m so happy that I found your videos. Continue to do you and live the life that brings you joy.

    Those are great! I love the positive sites you shared! A lot of common interests, but not any sites that I already knew. [Do you follow Jonna Jinton, or Mossy Bottom Finland, or The Cottage Fairy with Paola Miller? They all make me happy in different ways!]
    And I love this idea of Niksen! So relaxing!
    I knew a teacher who gave an assignment to her students to go outside, shut off their devices, and just quietly observe the world around them with as many senses as possible, for 15 minutes ... then report what they observed, no matter how ordinary or insignificant. ["I see a blue bottle cap on the ground. There are ants crawling around and around it. I can smell some meat on the grill, and feel the wind, and hear children laughing at the playground."] The students were so enthralled with the exercise that some resolved to make it a daily habit!

    ✅ Enjoying your channel. I am aiming for REAL FOOD. Been learning about Dr Berry's PHD/Proper Human Diet. Have not made a firm decision yet, but it is probably worth a few weeks trial to see how I feel. -- Exercise, I have rarely been good at that, but I certainly identify with the declining flexibility. You inspire me.

      I too, had a sedentary career for many years and I paid for it dearly. Choosing a low carb lifestyle over 18 months ago has transformed how I feel and as a bonus, how I look at 70. No more stiff joints, GERD, and constant hunger. Trying the PHD is well worth it. Once you beat the carb cravings, you will be amazed at the changes in your overall wellbeing.Good health to you!

    Vegetable eaters need to be very grateful for good soil. Animals help create good soil. Very few crops grow of farms fertilised with cabbage leaves and carrot scrapings.

    Ha! I totally took the senior discount at Harris Teeter last Thursday. I have silver hair at 50 and I often get offered the discount, but I always explain that I am not of the age. But this time I just said thank you. Breaking my foot this year has made me really appreciate how having willingness to receive help is actually a very important life skill.

    I am glad you call yourself plant based and not vegan. The two are very different plant based is mostly exactly that with maybe some animal food. Veganism is about far more animals, world hunger, environment health and health. I am 67 and will have been vegan 30 on 29th August. Unlike some my health is good my cholesterol levels are fine.

    I like the Beyond Meat substitute meat products - they taste better than the Impossible brand. Spaghetti and Beyond Meatballs is delicious. Cuban Black Beans and Rice. Vegetable Potsticker Soup made with coconut milk and Sriracha for some kick. Multi-bean chili with or without Beyond Burger. Dolmas, marinated chickpeas and Tabbouleh salad. Jackfruit tacos. Lots of vegetarian options that are not remotely boring.

    Regarding healthy eating....try legume stews and soups....garbanzi beans are delicious! Hummus sandwiches or dip is fantastic. Hummus is easy to make if you have a simple food processor.

    I live alone and treasure this time to myself after growing up in a large noisy house full of kids and our friends, it was fun at the time. Done! Yet my 5 siblings have conformed to social norms. I believe they'd be better off living alone since they are critical, pcky and inconsiderate of others. No pets either.

    I love the idea of a positive social media feed. I tried it inspired by other people whose example I respect and was ridiculed by friends and family many of who I have deleted. I have just been monumentally hacked and am just thinking of starting everything again and really limiting who I connect with. Even friends posts can be really toxic or a lovely friend posts 10 or so memes and short vids everyday which dominates my feeds.
    I love that you accepted a seniors discount. The other day an acquaintance suggested I move into a retirement village. I have to inform her I was not old enough 😂

    I would humbly suggest that you start watching the videos of Dave Mack on his channel No Carb Life. Strawberries in January and mangoes flown in from Thailand are not going to save the planet. Just because a plant may contain nutrients doesn't mean that those nutrients are bioavailable to the body. The vast majority of nutrients you need are contained in animal products. Various agencies have fear mongered us regarding cholesterol. If you feel like looking the information is easily available on CZcams. Wish you the best and I enjoy your channel!
