The SMOOTHEST Japanese bike! 2021 Kawasaki Z900

  • First time riding the 2021 Kawasaki Z900 ABS, an upright naked sport bike with a low seat height. For reference, I am a conservative rider with the bulk of my riding being commuting and mountain rides. I own a 2014 Triumph Street Triple R 675 and I would say my skill level is about average. I'll be featuring more mid level cc bikes on my channel this year because after a poll in my community tab, y'all voted for more of that! Stay tuned for more review videos from a short, everyday rider!

  • @FreeThoughtCrime
    @FreeThoughtCrime Před 2 lety +39

    I came off a string of punchy twins (fz07 and sv650) and I was absolutely astounded at how smooth the z900 is. It is pure silk. I also considered and tried the mt09. In my experience, the mt09 was absolute bonkers, a brutal monster I constantly had to wrestle with to keep under control. The z900 was welcoming with its easy going, smooth nature. But when you give it some beans, it can be every bit the monster that the mt09 is. Where the mt09 tries to rip your arms off all the time, the z900 rips you arms off only when you ask it to.

      @Simon K so which bike is the most fun and more likely to be kept long term... I ask this in the country I live (philippines) they don't do test rides and this bike is only 1k American dollars more than the mt07..any thoughts or input would be much appreciated...oh I forgot to add the roads I ride are alot of tight corner mountainous roads

    • @simonk333
      @simonk333 Před rokem +2

      @@andrewhoffman6 mt 07 is really fun bike to ride. Easy to handle and in the thight space you can turn like a 125 or 300 cc bike. Its lighter than kawasaki z900 around(220kg) vs mt07 around(185kg) you got a lot of power on both bikes but compare to each other kawasaki is crazy on power. For what you are saying about roads go whit mt 07 first and you will see that thr bike is almost for a city ride and perfect for stunt rider. I dont say you cannot ride it on highway or country roads but compare to kawasaki you can feel diference in power on conutry road. When you go and pass other cars whit mt 07you need to think and have more space on the road to pass them but whit kawasaki you just twist the trothle and you are flying. Kawasaki z900 is good for country roads and canyons its like when you go for corner its stable and wants to stay there( better suspension on kawasaki) but in tight space mt 07 is better. What are you riding now?

      @andrewhoffman6 Před rokem +1

      Thanks for responding..I was riding a ktm duke 390 until recently the transmission blew apart and took out the whole engine.. I do alot of wheelies but generally don't ride too fast..but yesterday I went and sat on both bikes and wow the kawasaki feels like quality and the yamaha feels like a plastic low quality afterthought..they don't have a 2023 mt07 with tft dash here yet I sat on a 2022..and I also sat on the 2023 kawasaki z900 standard

    • @simonk333
      @simonk333 Před rokem +3

      @@andrewhoffman6 i had mt 07 2021. For me dash from 21 is better looking than new one. That is good that you could try and look in real life and compare bothe bikes. And what did you chose? Or you will chose? If you are coming from ktm 390 i think whatever you chose you cant go wrong. Mt 07 is perfect for wheelies if you want to have fun. A little late to the party here, but I just picked up a 2022 Z900 ABS after 20 years of riding super sport bikes; mainly the Yamaha R6, in a variety of generations. Watched your review, and it made me smile.
    Many, if not most, naked bikes ARE sport bikes... so don't keep correcting yourself on that one. They're usually just a more upright, detuned version of a super and/or sport bike, sans the fairing and clip-ons. Though, sometimes they are created specifically for this genre; not sharing many, if any, parts with other bikes in a manufacturers line-up. The focus, as you made note of, with many naked sport bikes is to create a more versatile, but great handling motorcycle. One that's fun in the canyons and at track days, but can handle daily commuting, longer highway rides, and be a better general purpose motorcycle. I've seen plenty of these Z900's turned into race bikes, ran at track days, and can usually run circles around the purebred super sports. While some of that's the riders skill set, it remains rather impressive.
    Also, the "bouncy" is likely due to your lighter self. The rebound damping likely needs to be increased a little to prevent the suspension from shooting back up too quickly. =)
    Can't wait for winter to end so I can thoroughly enjoy my new Z900.
    So, let the haters hate... these bikes ARE sporty, and need not be called "naked" at all times.
    Fun review, Doodle!

    Just seeing this. I ended up getting the z650 because when I sat on the z900 the foot pegs dug into my legs. I know it's something I could get used to, but there was also this feeling of being "at home" when I sat on the 650! I'm surprised the foot peg issue didn't bug you, though!

      Is is not feasable to lay down on the tank when going fast? Like, is the bike built in a way, that obstructs this?
      I used to own a Suzuki GSX-750F, which was a blend of a tourer and a sportsbike. Hella comfy, would mostly sit rather upright. But when going home from my tour, I'd hop on the Autobahn (I'm German) press myself against the tank and go 200km/h +.
      6"2 with a wide frame and thinking of buying a Z900. I am now living in Japan and don't expect to exceed 140km/h on the highway that often and likely averaging smth below 100km/h anywhere else.

    Hi Doodle. Really like your videos. I wanted to ask you about this bike. It's caught my attention. I don't want the grief of getting something smaller and then upgrading over time. I need a first and last bike. Problem is, I haven't been on a bike in years. I rode mopeds a long time ago, not long had my endorsement and am narrowing down my choices. I want something that I can start with, practice, get used to, then use however I want. I know it has riding modes and traction control so I'm hoping it's tame enough to start on. What's your opinion/advice?

      Good point. I am 75 and looking for a fun bike. Must keep in mind comfort. I did have a brief test ride on a Tiger 800 XCX a few years ago. I recall it had a very smooth throttle. Way more comfy than the Harley Sporsters I was demoing at this dealer. You had any problems yet?

    • @DBartWest
