- In this tutorial I will show you how to add texture to a vector object using the transparency mask in Illustrator. You can use whatever texture you want whether it be a vector one or bitmap, I'm going to use a jpeg for this example which you download off my blog.
Texture can be found here: terrymahy.blogs...

Terry - I absolutely LOVE you! Finally, someone who doesn't waste my time with incessant rambling and just gets to it--clearly, succinctly and with perfect instruction. LOVE YOU!
I am very new to this graphic design world. I searched for days for an easy way to add texture to my work. All the explanations were long-winded and unclear. Then I found this - simple, clear and it works beautifully! Thank you for making my life easier! I will definitely watch (and recommend) your tutorials. Thanks Terry!
+Jason Tushinski All good, thanks for your comment :)
I watched some another videos but didn't understand until I watch yours. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for making this. I would also like to suggest that once you have the transparency aligned the way you like it, don't forget to link the image with the transparency so it would be easier to render it into a jpeg in photoshop. Spent a few minutes trying to figure that one out. Excellent tut!
Really helpful. Quick and easy, no beating around the bush. Very informative. Also appreciate that you're a kiwi. Cheers dude!
Thanks :)
TKS! Haven't done it in a while and forgot how dang easy it is. Thank You!!
This tutorial revolutionized my way of working with textures in AI (where clipping mask is not always the best solution). Thank you so much for this simple explanation!
All good, I remember when I first learnt how to do it and thinking the same thing. Thanks for your comment.
Terry Mahy
Can you tell me how to change the color of the texture once I used the transparency mask? Thank you!
Magda Bardzinska The texture will generally take on the colour of the object it is masking. So just change the colour of the object.
I've used your tutorial several times over the past year. Thanks for your quick and detailed instructions!
Awesome, glad it's useful. Cheers man :)
This was perfect. Thanks so much. I had gone through so many complicated "how-to's" and this was a simple, quick and elegant solution.
Thanks for your comment
This was the 4th tutorial I watched trying to accomplish an effect like this and the first one that was easy peezy lemon squeezy. Great Work!
Found this way of doing a mask way more simple and cooler. Thanks!

Just a tip for anyone having problem: If you have "Paste remembers layers" setting active while trying to do this, your gonna have a bad day. 4h until i figured this out.

Great tip! However it took me ages to find how to unlink the object so I could get out of the opacity mask to work elsewhere in the document. Probably worth mentioning that at the end. Thanks though this is going to be really useful!
Thank you I could not figure out how to do this, your amazing!

Yep, you are right. In that case you would be better off using a vector texture or a super high resolution bitmap.

floralundies All good :)
Great tut, subbed
Thanks :)
super useful tutorial! thank you!
You're very welcome Terry. And I wanted to ask you one question, if that's allright - how would I get a texture that looks black (instead of white as shown in your video)? If you could let me know when you have a moment, that would be fantastic. Thanks so much for your help! - Jason
+Jason Tushinski Basically the texture in this tutorial becomes transparent. So whatever is behind the grouped shape after the mask is applied is the colour of the texture. In this case the white page. Putting a black object behind your shape will achieve what you want.
Gracias por el tutorial!!
Muito obrigado! Thanks!
Great! It works! Thank you so much! :)
No worries, thanks :)
So helpful thank you!
All good :)
Great help! Thanks.
All good :)
thank you so much I thought this was harder you made it so easy =) I added a concrete texture black and white but for some reason my image looks pixelized after I added it. is there any thing you can do to adjust that? thanks again love your videos!!
Thanks, you need to use a higher resolution image for your texture. try and use something 300dpi or above.
this was great. thanks!
Thanks :)
Thank you! YOU my fiend are the don!
+HowToMakeBeats All Good, Thanks :)
Say I want it to cut the texture pattern out of the image so that there is no fill where the texture is how do I go about that?
Hmm I am having a bit of trouble. This method worked for me earlier. Now I am trying with a new design. It is a log that already has a clipping mask applied and has some text... Doing exactly what this says but just getting straight white.... Does anyone know why this is?
I made sure "paste remembers layers" was not selected and this still didn't work. Did all the steps the same, grouped objects just don't show up after I paste the texture into the mask :/
+Emily Rose make sure you texture isn't predominantly black as this will just hide it. And if the texture isn't over your shape it's not going to show up. Otherwise repeat the process as you may have missed something.
+Terry Mahy I'm having the same problem as Emily and my layer isn't predominantly black...
+Robin Smith Are all or your transparency options the same as what is shown, ie havn't got anything tick that shouldn't be like invert mask or Isolate Blending.
May be a dumb question, but I made a logo in Illustrator. Followed your steps to add in a texture via transparency mask. When I go to save my logo as an EPS, I get the message that I need to flatten the transparency. Can you pleas advise? Thanks!
perfect tutorial
Thanks :)
Hi Terry Mahy,
It's a very nice tutorial. It's simple, clear and helping.
I have a small question, is it possible to make a transparency mask in color instead of grey scale? At the moment I need that effect in color. I really appreciate if you could give me a solution to that too
Cheers,
Rukshan.
Masking is always done in grayscale. The idea of a mask is not to overly imagery on an object but instead to knock out parts of an object based on an image. The varying degrees of gray simply specify the opacity of the knock out, white being 0%, black being 100% opacity. The colour will always be controlled by the object you are masking, not the mask itself. If you want to overlay a colour image onto your object I suggest you check out my other tutorial "Illustrator Tutorial - Adding Vector Textures in Illustrator" This may be more suited to what you are doing.
