The cool thing about this clip is how it was filmed. DeNiro is such a method actor that he learned the whole Mass start to finish. The director just wanted a couple scenes, but DeNiro would have none of it. Each take was the entire Mass and they edited the parts they wanted.
It's set primarily in 1948 Los Angeles. DeNiro is an ambitious priest who's a rising star in the archdiocese. Robert Duvall plays his brother, a LAPD homicide detective. Duvall's investigating a grisly murder based on the Black Dahlia and finds that the trail leads back to major church benefactor (Charles Durning) who is closely tied in to his brother. It's a really good film, especially if you like the film noir genre of postwar Los Angeles.

The big diff is that Solemn Mass includes the Deacon and Subdeacon….among a few other things. For example, no vernacular whatsoever is permitted in a Solemn Mass whereas in Low Mass and High Mass you can have vernacular hymns or anthems.
Well this one ain't High Mass (sung by the priest without Deacon and Subdeacon..aka the "Missa Cantata"). This hyah is Solemn Mass...the highest expression of the Virtue of Religion. But! incredible film. How Deniro and Duvall play off one another is once of the best things I've ever seen in cinema. And, yeah, they did a bang-up, detailed job with the mass. They sure don't do that anymore. I haven't seen this movie for decades, but clearly remember how beautifully nuanced it is.

Well, being a roman-catholic priest ordained 30 years ago I was used to celebrate in the modern form, which is much more easy and without any deepness, the old rite I learned later and want to express, the wonderful actor Robert de Niro is doing this part of holy mass better than a lot of real priests!

It was all acting. There was no intention to perform or simulate a sacrament, and it was beautifully shot and performed, out of respect, not mockery.
They tastefully excluded the Words of Consecration-i find this appropriate. This prevents it from being outright sacrilege. It's a movie. They were trying to get it right, which is better than most MCs at joe blow Catholic parishes do. You never know, someone seeing this very detailed, reverent reenaction might be turned to Tradition because of it. It shows Catholicism as She is, not as She is afflicted in this turbulent, but brief time(40 yrs vs 2,000)

I agree with them insofar as this is a well-done reenactment of the Traditional Mass, choir included, and makes an impression as the film starts.
I just remembered something. The police detective character in this movie is Robert Duval. He, I believe, has made a very strong evangelical commitment to to Jesus. He is very devout in that religion. I wonder where he stood when he made this movie. I wonder what he thinks of it now. Duvall's treatment of Pentacostalism in his movie The Apostle was outstanding. He showed a real understanding & a (not uncritical) sympathy. Hollywood doesn't make movies like that.
I'm Orthodox- not Catholic. Here's what I don't understand. Why did it seem that they changed everything at Vatican II? It is a beautiful liturgy. Why not keep everything except the Latin- simply performing the same mass in English? Instead- many churches got rid of their old altars so the priest could face the wrong way, etc.
That simple change in having the Mass said in the vernacular (English in America,) over traditional Latin, you can go to a traditional liturgical Lutheran or Anglican service. I've seen videos of those services, and the celebrants and the congregations are so reverent in those masses. I'm a Catholic, and I've been to an FSSP Tridentine Mass before, and it was beautiful. Far more spiritually invigorating then the Novus Ordo that my parents bring me to every Sunday. Nothing wrong with the priests, they're doing it to the best to their ability. But even so, their efforts can only go so far with the reformed service. The Tridentine Mass is indeed the True Mass of the Catholic Church. If anyone who is a Catholic reads this comment, I'd highly recommend that you go to a TLM.

Umm... mostly a good representation, but they lined up wrongly after the Kyrie (should be in a straight line at the center, not staggered right), the thurifer (or MC) should be on the left of the Priest for the offertory incensation, and the thumb and forefinger of both hands need to be joined -- he still seemed to have at least four fingers flat and together at the base of the chalice... and what's with the red inserts on the cassock?

The Cardinal is dressed wrong! Cardinals NEVER worn the Mantelletta outside of Rome! Especially in their own diocese. The choir robes of the Archbishop and Cardinal of Lis Angeles, in those days, in the summer would have been: scarlet red choir cassock of water silk morie, scarlet water silk sash with gold metallic pompom tassels at both ends, lace rochet with scarlet under lace cuffs, (and since it was a big, fancy, formal, daughter of a wealthy donator, the Scarlet water silk Cappa Magna (Great cape with 15 foot train) and water silk "mozetta" scarlet (in winter it would have been white ermine fur) over which (in the U.S.A.) his best/jeweled pectoral cross suspended on the gold and red cord with red/gold tasell hanging in the back. Or, if he wasn't that friendly with the family or didn't want a train bearer for the Cappa, would have just been at the throne with everything I mentioned except the Cappa. But since he was the Ordinary Archbishop only the mozetta! NEVER the Mantellta. Carndials only worn the mantelletta only in Rome in respect to the Holy Father, since there, the bishops jurisdiction was limited. It wasn't until 1969 that Pope Paul VI granted ALL bishops the right/privilege of only wearing the mozetta letting the rochet being fully shone. This was to show all bishops were brother bishops and "equal" in Holy Orders and shared in their collegialality! What Robert Dinero wore was quite exact of what s Right Rev. MSGR. would have worn at Mass back then, and could even wear today. N.B. he being a Italian Catholic, or the drector had to be fantastic, because Bob really did the incenseing at the Offertory correctly! Better than some priests today. St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Los Angeles on 12th Street. My parents were married here in 1954. Sadly this spectacular Church burned down in 1983 due to a wiring issue, shortly after this movie was made. They built a new church in its place, however it is nothing like this.. Sacramental theology teaches that EVEN IF VALID (which I concede the NO is, even in principle), if the celebrant does not intend, at least externally, to celebrate a Catholic rite then it's invalid. Given that NOs are celebrated my ministers who try to shape it up to be more ecumenical, entertaining, or poorly trained clerics, hence there's doubt about their validity. Where there's doubt, the practical course would be to avoid receiving from there.
At the time, bishops - cardinals had a cassock, matelletta and mozetta as 'choir dress'. Aux. Bishops had no mozetta, and higher ranks of the monsignori had the use of a violet cassock and mantelletta. About 50 years ago, this was changed - for the worse at that. Monsignori lost the mantelletta (a good number of us of the higher ranks are using it "unofficially" as a protest against Rome's decision to stop the higher ranks). Now, all bishops dress alike. Right now, with the liberal Francis at the helm, no one is sure as to what is and what ain't.

Except for those sinful things the movie had a very good message which I think most people dont understand. It is sacrilegious. I do not like these things said in a real church. It is a scam. I find it sacrilegious to imitate church rituals like this in a real church. Then do it in a church studio in Los Angeles. Without actually blessed vestments. It is the lack of reverence for actually Holy objects and abusing a "consecration" scene. And the dismissal was done the wrong way; he did not say Ite missa est.
I wondered about that - we went from the Canon of Mass to dismissal. Considering that such vestments were no longer the norm (at least they're coming back!!) in the early 1980's, a blind eye was most likely done - just done with/without permission.
The Tridentine Mass was very beautiful, especially in a Cathedral, where they had a large and well trained choir, but in the small parish church it was rather different. The Tridentine Mass does not reflect the theology (Ecclesiology) of the Church since Vat 11, which every good Catholic is bond to accept in obedience. The Tridentine Mass is beautiful but causes division, and the Mass is not a concert no matter how beautiful it may be.
The Church can't make a fundamental change in her dogmatic theology. Session XXII of the Council of Trent defined the Mass as the very renewal of the sacrifice of the Cross. The Divine Victim offered in propitiation. The new mass was deliberately created to remove this essential dogma in an effort to make it acceptable to the protestants. The new mass is a mass without a Victim offered in true sacrifice, and thus it is doubtful in validity and offensive to God, since it offers false worship. It could not have come from the Catholic Church. IT is what caused the division, not Catholics going to Mass they same way their ancestors did. Something went wrong at Vatican II.
Unlike roman Catholicism, the true Orthodox Catholic Church has never changed, and stayed the same from it's beginning to today. The Holy Spirit has watched over the Church and protected it from grievous heresies such as the Novus Ordo. Papal Infallibility is a lie, and the Novus Ordo is just one example to support this. Come back home to the one True, Holy, and Apostolic Church.

I hardly think the "Folk Mass" was "rising again to glory"
But it is a form of evangelising the faith, since it shows the mass to people who would not otherwise see it.

That simple change in having the Mass said in the vernacular (English in America,) over traditional Latin, you can go to a traditional liturgical Lutheran or Anglican service. I've seen videos of those services, and the celebrants and the congregations are so reverent in those masses.
I'm a Catholic, and I've been to an FSSP Tridentine Mass before, and it was beautiful. Far more spiritually invigorating then the Novus Ordo that my parents bring me to every Sunday. Nothing wrong with the priests, they're doing it to the best to their ability. But even so, their efforts can only go so far with the reformed service.
The Tridentine Mass is indeed the True Mass of the Catholic Church. If anyone who is a Catholic reads this comment, I'd highly recommend that you go to a TLM.

@@josejoji3487 Not really. The traditional mass is today only preserved amongst Byzantine rite Catholics, who do not use Latin, but celebrate in the language of the people. The Orthodox do the same. I have seen the novus ordo celebrated in Latin, it is still dreadful.

Umm... mostly a good representation, but they lined up wrongly after the Kyrie (should be in a straight line at the center, not staggered right), the thurifer (or MC) should be on the left of the Priest for the offertory incensation, and the thumb and forefinger of both hands need to be joined -- he still seemed to have at least four fingers flat and together at the base of the chalice... and what's with the red inserts on the cassock?
He's a monsignor so that explains the red, but the rest youre right

Not at all. The family can have the priest of their choice to offer MASS, the cardinal was invited as a guess. Being it was held in his cathedral, he had the right to sit on his Throne, and being a formal wedding, had the option of wearing full choir dress.

The exact correct answer is: it's only a movie. The Cardinal who in the movie is The Archbishop of Los Angeles, Msgr. Spellesey (sp.?; Robert Dinero) works in the Canncery for the Archbishop. They are friends with the Father of the Bride, a very wealthy and Catholic business man building contractor of LA. The Cardinal is dressed wrong! Cardinals NEVER worn the Mantelletta outside of Rome! Especially in their own diocese. The choir robes of the Archbishop and Cardinal of Lis Angeles, in those days, in the summer would have been: scarlet red choir cassock of water silk morie, scarlet water silk sash with gold metallic pompom tassels at both ends, lace rochet with scarlet under lace cuffs, (and since it was a big, fancy, formal, daughter of a wealthy donator, the Scarlet water silk Cappa Magna (Great cape with 15 foot train) and water silk "mozetta" scarlet (in winter it would have been white ermine fur) over which (in the U.S.A.) his best/jeweled pectoral cross suspended on the gold and red cord with red/gold tasell hanging in the back. Or, if he wasn't that friendly with the family or didn't want a train bearer for the Cappa, would have just been at the throne with everything I mentioned except the Cappa. But since he was the Ordinary Archbishop only the mozetta! NEVER the Mantellta. Carndials only worn the mantelletta only in Rome in respect to the Holy Father, since there, the bishops jurisdiction was limited. It wasn't until 1969 that Pope Paul VI granted ALL bishops the right/privilege of only wearing the mozetta letting the rochet being fully shone. This was to show all bishops were brother bishops and "equal" in Holy Orders and shared in their collegialality!
What Robert Dinero wore was quite exact of what s Right Rev. MSGR. would have worn at Mass back then, and could even wear today. N.B. he being a Italian Catholic, or the drector had to be fantastic, because Bob really did the incenseing at the Offertory correctly! Better than some priests today. With the 3 circles over the host and chalice, and the prayers.

St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Los Angeles on 12th Street. My parents were married here in 1954. Sadly this spectacular Church burned down in 1983 due to a wiring issue, shortly after this movie was made.
They built a new church in its place, however it is nothing like this.. You can Google St Joseph’s Church in Los Angeles to see images of the original structure.

Sacramental theology teaches that EVEN IF VALID (which I concede the NO is, even in principle), if the celebrant does not intend, at least externally, to celebrate a Catholic rite then it's invalid. Given that NOs are celebrated my ministers who try to shape it up to be more ecumenical, entertaining, or poorly trained clerics, hence there's doubt about their validity. Where there's doubt, the practical course would be to avoid receiving from there.

At the time, bishops - cardinals had a cassock, matelletta and mozetta as 'choir dress'. Aux. Bishops had no mozetta, and higher ranks of the monsignori had the use of a violet cassock and mantelletta. About 50 years ago, this was changed - for the worse at that. Monsignori lost the mantelletta (a good number of us of the higher ranks are using it "unofficially" as a protest against Rome's decision to stop the higher ranks). Now, all bishops dress alike. Right now, with the liberal Francis at the helm, no one is sure as to what is and what ain't.

Were there Baroque vestments with a choir when Christ celebrated the first Eucharist? Probably not. But we do it anyways because He is worth it.

***** In the old days people didn't know exactly what all was happening at Mass, so the bells were used to basically say, "Hey pay attention! Something important is happening!" At least that's how I learned it.

@@Shadowcu123 I live in the west coast of Canada. The extraordinary form here is rare. More churches offer the EF in the mid to eastern provinces. That's not enough since there are young people all over the country who are questioning their faith. Most west coast millennials leave due to lack of true inspiration aka the Latin mass

Have any of you seen the whole movie? There is nudity, sex and profanity. Robert the priest says the F word. Except for those sinful things the movie had a very good message which I think most people dont understand. The Priest in the end becomes holy and closer to God thru the sins of others, even his own of dealing with Irish Mafia to bulid churches and schools.
I see your point. Vatican 2 was a heretical movement that was not necessary. The Orthodox liturgy has not changed its liturgy's language. The Greeks have greek, the Russians have Church Slavonic, so the Roman Catholic Church has Latin. Latin is the language that is suppose to Unite all of the Catholics in the world. God Bless you!!!

And how can the majority of the Christian world (4 of the 5 primary Churches of the Pentarchy) break away from just one of the Churches who became power hungry? Roman Catholicism has rapidly become further and further alien from the original faith. Orthodoxy adheres to all the original doctrines, beliefs, and practices of ancient Christianity - while roman Catholicism continues to change more and more from the original Church.

When I was a kid, we called it 'fumigating" when we used it. I came close to kicking a kid in the ass that was holding that damn censor under my nose instead of holding in front of him!
It is sacrilegious. I do not like these things said in a real church. It is a scam. I find it sacrilegious to imitate church rituals like this in a real church. Then do it in a church studio in Los Angeles. Without actually blessed vestments. It is the lack of reverence for actually Holy objects and abusing a "consecration" scene. And the dismissal was done the wrong way; he did not say Ite missa est.
I wondered about that - we went from the Canon of Mass to dismissal. Considering that such vestments were no longer the norm (at least they're coming back!!) in the early 1980's, a blind eye was most likely done - just done with/without permission.
The Tridentine Mass was very beautiful, especially in a Cathedral, where they had a large and well trained choir, but in the small parish church it was rather different. The Tridentine Mass does not reflect the theology (Ecclesiology) of the Church since Vat 11, which every good Catholic is bond to accept in obedience. The Tridentine Mass is beautiful but causes division, and the Mass is not a concert no matter how beautiful it may be.
The Church can't make a fundamental change in her dogmatic theology. Session XXII of the Council of Trent defined the Mass as the very renewal of the sacrifice of the Cross. The Divine Victim offered in propitiation. The new mass was deliberately created to remove this essential dogma in an effort to make it acceptable to the protestants. The new mass is a mass without a Victim offered in true sacrifice, and thus it is doubtful in validity and offensive to God, since it offers false worship. It could not have come from the Catholic Church. IT is what caused the division, not Catholics going to Mass they same way their ancestors did.
Something went wrong at Vatican II.
Unlike roman Catholicism, the true Orthodox Catholic Church has never changed, and stayed the same from it's beginning to today. The Holy Spirit has watched over the Church and protected it from grievous heresies such as the Novus Ordo. Papal Infallibility is a lie, and the Novus Ordo is just one example to support this. Come back home to the one True, Holy, and Apostolic Church.
The Novus Ordo constitutes a break with the Catholic Church, not a continuation of it.
