If the general korean public stopped supporting companies who do this to idols then there wouldn’t be a market for anorexic idols. Disagree slightly, as I dont think this can be solved from the consumer side through boycotting. Really there should be some sort of regulatory body or union preventing companies from treating their workers this way and legal mechanisms to punish these companies and the executives if they break these rules.
And above that there should be a broader and more open discussion in Korean media about beauty standards and expectations placed on young girls and women.

I'm new to the channel, so I don't know anyones name yet (I'm sorry), but the girl with the hat is 100% spot on: it isn't about weight at a certain point with idols. it's about control, and willingness to be controlled, even if it means self abuse. the company only wants to debut those they can control, so they force unachievable standards on these kids to see who will go the furthest to try to attain them, even though it's impossible.
they only debut those that are willing to sacrifice their lives for fame - these girls are killing themselves, but that's what the company wants. only those that are willing to die when told to do so by the company are considered viable product. those that debut as idols generally are not the most talented, or the prettiest, or the most interesting - those that debut are the most desperate, the most sad, who will do whatever they're told to do no matter how absurd, will endure any type of abuse quietly and are the most submissive. those people are the best products.
imagine being told to drive yourself to the brink of death by a stranger, and then *actually doing it* - even if it means crying every night, fainting, donating blood to lose weight... most people would never be so desperate/easy to control. most people would just choose a healthy career and live a happy life. you have to be especially vunerable and have little self worth to be so willing to abuse yourself to the brink of death just because a company said so, especially considering the fact that the "reward" (debut) the company offers for this blind submission is also pretty awful. actually being an idol is not very nice after debut much of the time - it's physically and emotionally exhausting, with 24/7 work that you cannot refuse (literally 4 hours sleep for months on end), no social life so you never make friends or have fun, dating is disallowed so you spend your youth forever alone, you're being paid almost nothing in some cases (or at least a tiny amount compared to American stars) and you're constantly being abused by both managers and obsessed strangers on the internet. these kids are willing to abuse themselves, and be used and abused by others, at the command of a company who intends to miserably use up their young lives to make money, until the contract expires. anyone who would wish for that kind of life is very misguided and vunerable. it's incredibly sad.

      this is very well said!!
"you have to be especially vunerable and have little self worth to be so willing to abuse yourself to the brink of death just because a company said so" -- the way i see it, a big part of the equation is how the companies pick young kids and groom them into becoming these vulnerable people. over time they make them rely on managers who control their lives and they think they can't live without them (which is why picking a poor trainee is perfect to control since they're desperate for money) its literally textbook abuse

He would always stop her from eating. It got so bad during a show he told her it was ok to eat. Idk if that person is still their manager or not. I've seen so many vids of idols passing out. The scariest one i saw was a male idol coughing/throwing up a ton of blood during rehersals for a concert they took him off stage cleaned him up and make him go back out. I'm like that's not normal he has to see a doctor the amount of blood that came out of his mouth. It was like a bucketful that came out of him. 50 kg is insane to think about because i remember when i first got into kpop the standard was beign 47kg which is around 100 lbs and some idols like Ailee and some actresses even who weight over that were considered overweight. which like 52 kg is like 116lbs which is healthy for some heights but other heights should weigh more than that if you're taller than like 5'2, 5'3 you should weigh more than 120 definitely i don't know the exact healthy weights for every height only my own. However even within those healthy weights it should fluctuate because not everyone's body takes in nutrients the same way. I have struggle with my weight however I have never done extreme dieting i might go on a small diet or exercise more but i never try to limit the amount of food I eat. Normally the less food you eat the harder it becomes to maintain weight unless you're eating no food because your body starts taking in a lot more due to how stressed it is from not having the proper amount of nutrients so you tend to gain more weight when you eat so little then eat something big. they should really have a healthy balance and have time for exercise.

They're the ones who enforce the idols to do unhealthy diet. They're the ones who enforce managers to fixate and nitpick on the idols eating habits. They're the ones that have the legal power to enforce these rules towards the idols and even threaten the idols to either not debut, be on hiatus, and/or fired if they couldn't meet their harsh criteria.
While it's true that the public perception affects the case as well, but it's definitely not as direct as these companies' rules and actions. It's too hard to control the nasty public opinion, bc weirdos will always exist, especially behind anonymity. In contrast, the push should be towards the government to limit what these agencies could do towards their idols, in regards to their personal diet plan and also other stuff, and towards the formation of the idol union (like what Chacha said) to help them battle these power-tripping agencies. That would be the concrete move to do.

The fact that over 50kg is considered overweight is so alarming. I’m South Asian, so fairly short even though I’m living in the West. I’ve always had a fast metabolism and some health conditions that make retaining weight hard, and exercising for me too, which usually helps drive up my appetite and build muscle. I recently dropped to about 45kg and the response from my doctors was “You need to gain weight.” Albeit, when the nurse asked if I’d changed my habits I said no, and explained why I couldn’t keep weight on and she still said “you’re lucky,” even though she had been talking about the health risks a moment before. But still, the attitude was so different: I had friends asking if I was okay because I didn’t look well. My Dad has a similar issue and was recommending me the high-calorie snacks he likes and what helps him remember to eat. Obviously eating disorders and the romanticisation of underweight bodies exists worldwide but it feels like things might be getting a tiny bit better where I live- seeing this extreme is just so scary. I really didn’t feel well at that weight- I was weak, I looked in the mirror and saw someone who wasn’t well. I hope it doesn’t come off as mean, but I wonder if some celebrities would look that way too without a whole team of stylists to disguise thinner hair or sunken cheeks or dull eyes.

I have always been against most diets. Just eat balanced meals at reasonable portions. Don't eat until you feel stuffed, stop when you feel comfortable. Increase your activity levels and then your body will naturally become its ideal size unless you have a medical condition making it extra difficult. If you have that, don't stress, talk to your doctor and ask them to help you do it safely. Happy and healthy is the most important thing and more beautiful than starving

Yes that’s it basically, muscle isn’t what they want a lot of the time, they want a “””feminine””” body which in beauty standards is low low fat but also not much muscle.
They run and burn calories by exercising but also eat less and to maintain muscle you need a proper food routine.

I mean when I was young I wanted to lose weight and be skinny too, but now that I started to work on my body image and working out seriously, I understand how much eating is important... you have to eat everyday, each meal, snacks etc.. you need energy so live, that's how the body works.. stop giving you body the fuel its needs, it will stop working... and the woman( or people who menstruate) body is so fluctuating because of hormones... you can take few kimos in just a day because of that. And for most of women (people who menstruate) being under a certain percentage of body fat is really unhealthy and can cause problems with periods, like that said in the video... I mean idol are like athletes in a way, do you see athletes eating only an ice cube in a week ?? These companies need to realize that if they want skinny idols or hour glass idols they need to loose weigh/keep them from eating just exercise parts of the body .
Like I my dad is constantly telling me this and although I am still not listening because I fast until 2pm every day and exercise and I am constantly stressing over my weight when I really just care about the shape of my body. Every time I look in the mirror and I think "god i really need to lose weight.... looks like I'm fasting longer than 2pm" and sometimes I'll go all day w/o eating if my mom doesn't cook dinner. she tries to get me to eat at least an orange but when she says she isn't cooking my mind automatically says "no thanks, I'd rather not." because i am so scared of being a binge eater again.
I know its not healthy but I can't help it. and I was close to loosing weight and getting to my goal but my friend came over and she is constantly hungry, and constantly asking me if I am, when are we going to eat etc and im to ashamed to tell her that I don't want to, that over the weekend I managed to gain about 7lbs and its making me feel like I look fatter... idk if its body dysmorphia or what but I hate my chest because I am a d cup (forcing myself into a c) i hate my thighs because they're thick and I hate my arms and stomach the most. my mother tries to say "oh i wish i had your body" because i'm curvier than her but I wish I had hers (shes really skinny)

I am the oldest of five siblings, the three oldest of us had a different father then the last two. My father and mother are small and I am the biggest at 5'8" and 153 pounds. My half brother and sister having a different father who was over 6'4" and well over 200 pounds are both over weight, my half brother is 6'3" and 275 pounds. We ate at the same table, the same food for years and we had the same mother cooking it, go figure. So, you are who you are, the main thing is be healthy and make the best of it. They’re trying to do what’s best for their child by allowing them to follow their dreams but they don’t realise by doing this they are sacrificing their child’s health.
