Dir en grey was influenced by Deftones, THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETS, Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and Tool.
Korn is not in there. The lead vocal's personal favorite is some band and artists from UK. His influence for his expression mainly comes from an old French horror movie.
Too good to be live? He sounds even better if you hear the real live and not the edit. His growls, shrieks, and shouts and his singing voice is insanely loud. Unlike most metal bands out there, you'll hear his vocal surprisingly clear. And he's 100% self taught for both singing and metal vocals.

They have been influenced by a lot more bands than the ones you named here [especially a lot more Japanese bands] and I think at least Toshiya, Kaoru and Die were a bit influenced by Korn when they toured with them - there are several interviews where the three mention how touring overseas in general has changed their approach to playing guitar and bass and they frequently mention Korn. When it comes to Shinya: he only saw that western drummers were huge which confused him and when they played festivals drummers would come to him asking him why he plays the way he does [his playing style is very artistic and his patterns incredibly inventive - both rather rare in western metal]. It seems he just confused everyone XD. Btw. which French horror movie did you have in mind? [I remember Kyo did a list once of his favorite horror movies but I can't remember where...and I don't recall a French one amongst them. I would be really interested if you find it somewhere! I only know of the massive influence Alejandro Jodorowsky had on Kyo which cannot be stressed enough. His symbolism and photography can be found all over Kyo's lyrics.]

Not Korn? Repetition of Hatred is practically just a Korn song though?
But even then, any modern metal band should have Korn as one of their inspirations, whether they like them or not. They were the first nu-metal band (and dir en grey definitely had a nu-phase), they were also (together with Helmet) kinda the first bands to start using 7-strings and heavily down tuning them.

Ou well, I think there was some miscommunication, you didn't quite remember or the person was talking nonesense but Dir en grey have never been a J-pop band ^^'. Apart form the bassist all members played in a Visual Kei band called La:Sadie's before they founded Dir en grey. They played a style that was quite popular in VK at the time but they gave it a little twist, sounding darker and a bit more experimental [If we have to use western terms: wouldn't really categorize their music as metal back then but it wasn't quite rock either]. They quickly gathered quite a big fanbase for an indie band so they discussed signing to a major lable. Kisaki [their bassist] did not want to, the members kidnapped Toshiya [their bassist today] from another band as the story goes and Dir en grey were born. From the start the band had a bit of a darker image but mostly due to their lyrics, concerts and music videos [they have been working with the same video director for 25 years - he stood at the beginning of his carrier when their management put the two together, it's been a quite fruitful working relationship I would say ^^ -> note that they have been working with other directors for a couple of videos]. While their first EP Missa pretty much continued the sound of La:Sadie's, their first album Gauze already proofed to be a proper bag of surprises - they have already covered different genres there and played around with multiple sounds. Their most poppy song is certainly Yokan but the album also contains heavy songs like ZAN and early progressive songs like Mazohyst of Decadence. So yeah, they've never been a pop band. But I guess just seeing them in full VK outfits might be fun/disturbing/weird to someone who gets to know the band through their later work - although they are still [or rather again] dressing in a more subtle VK style [I say subtle_looking at Kyo and Kaoru in some pictures/lives: Not the right word 😂].
The first live you watched of Different Sense actually came from a show where Kyo was sick with vocal nodule dysphonia, so some of those notes definitely hurt - he wasn't able to sing half the notes during this live as you can hear at the end of the song. That's NOT his normal singing voice.
And ou boy he is off key during most of the clean singing as well [he is deaf on his left ear so that happens sometimes]. But Dir en grey have never altered the sound of their concerts for DVDs - once you hear the same song in a couple of live versions you will find that none sound even remotely the same because the emotion is always a bit different on each day.
Different Sense comes from the 2011 album DUM SPIRO SPERO. The concert was in November 2011.
Magayasou is form their 2014 album ARCHE and one of my favorites so I'm really happy that's here :) Between the first and the second video the band took a 6 month break for Kyo to treat his vocal issues and the band to rest [they had been touring for 3 years straight between 2009 and 2011].
Btw. sometimes the record lables can't do anything - the CZcams algorithm picks up songs whether lables [or individuals] aproof or not - Dir en grey are actually banned very rarely [very new songs/videos do more frequently].
The third song you reacted to [Shokubeni] is from 2004 - the album is Vulgar. The liveyou saw was from 2016/2017 though [sorry, too lazy to look up the date right now].
The last one was Decayed Crow from the same album and concert as the first one. If you remember the problems he had there you might appreciate how much of an afford it was to nail this one ;)
The symphonic elements during this concert cannot be heard during the album version.
Decayed Crow is one of their heaviest and most straight forward songs but what you describe does not really fit the instruments...I own the scorebook of DUM SPIRO SPERO and the detail in their songwriting is just mad.
Thank you to the person who payed for these reactions! And have a good day~

No no no. In that first song and all the tour in general of that video. Was the tour for the most experimental album they ever made. And they got to another lever instrumentally and Kyo always sang in a melodic way. But since 2007 when they come out seriously off Japan, they toured with Korn, Slipknot and other nu metal bands, so they started to experiment other styles. And Kyo always was super devoted live. And since they started to get heavier he also started to push more of his voice. Because their lives are always go emotional with Kyo, he just fucked up all is voice on that tour. He needed almost 1 year to recover and was in danger to never get his voice back 😬😬😬
Btw, he is a very singer because he is always reeventig his self and changing voices because of the injuries. He started other projectsy I believe maybe to express different characters and voices so he can keep singing 👌🏼👌🏼

If you ever decide to do another Dir en Grey video I'd recommend some songs you might enjoy more or at least see more merit in
    - Vinushka (it's sort of an epic type song, variety and not overly heavy for the most part)
    - Tousei (emotional, more on the accessible less heavy alternative metal/rock side of dir)
    - Macabre (very long, but it has good hooks and interisting songwriting)
    - Glass Skin (a pretty cool ballad, Kyo sounds great in it)

  • @therose6901

I think you would probably like about 70% of their music. I think you just have to skip _The Marrow of a Bone_ , _UROBOROS_ and _DUM SPIRO SPERO_ - their heavier, more progressive or avant-gardistic/experimental albums. Of course, the last two are widely viewed as their best albums but they just don't seem to match your taste 😄
Imagining Dir en grey as Pop band had me think of the new sukekiyo video. Sukekiyo is the second band Kyo sings in and they just released a video that played with that exact image/idea 😉 (some of their music mixes 80s pop with industrial stuff and so on. So it makes more sense with this band to think of a pop-image, for example if you would hear them on the radio)
Just as an info: The thumbnail is super confusing because it shows the cover of _Woe_ by An Abstract Illusion instead of anything Dir en grey related. I think you might have taken it over from a precious reaction?

    • @captainmorgan1978
      @captainmorgan1978  Před rokem

Yes, I just fixed it with the thumbnail generator. I usually do this right after the live stream, but the generator in the YT studio wasn't there this time for some reason...
If the music is like the middle 2 songs, you might be correct about the 70%...if it is like the 1st and last song, maybe not! lol
