In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Dir en Grey and Macabre live.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17 for two years, then went part-time ever since, while holding day careers including chef and spiritual health care while raising a family.
As a producer I've made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I mostly abandoned the prog genre in the 90s but have returned to it now with vigour 30 years later. So much prog! My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electronic as well). At the end of 2022 I fell into a shoegaze rabbit hole (so you will see lots featured here.)

7 months late but ive been a fan since 2008, back when i was a teenager and i still chase the feeling of listening to dir en grey for the first time again. Saw them live three times man, and again, still chasing the euphoria of the way Kyo makes sure you feel //something// when he's doing his thing. Something about dir en grey is genuinely just so special, I love seeing people react to them for more than just the shock value videos and songs. It truly doesn't matter what band I come to love, it doesn't matter how far I move on, dir en grey is a core band for me and I come back time and time again because of how much I miss and love them, probably to the fucking core.
Thank you so much for reacting to them :) fans appreciate the content!

This gets even more impressive when you find out Shinya (drums) had broken ribs and Kyo (vocals) had the flu during this. I can also answer the guitar question:
Die: ESP Signature D-DR-II-7st, 1998 Fender Stratocaster, custom Takamine acoustic based on a cheap acoustic he likes that lives in the studio.
Kaoru: ESP Signature K-DV-7st (seven string variant of the ESP Viper, which is their SG)
Toshiya: ESP D-TT Trick Star bass, which he designed specifically to be played in a near-upright position

Been laying low recently but I had to say for this one, it’s been so long since I heard this. Part of the reason why strange things from Japan are so strange is because the culture is so reserved. What happens is the more someone is excluded from normal social circles the weirder they become. Or that’s my theory anyway.

It makes me happy to see people older like me reacting and at the same time liking the selections they react to. It makes my heart swell with happiness to see people get exposed with this amazing band. Dir en grey really need more recognition.

The way he ends the performance, is that a reference to Platoon, when Willem Defoes character dies?

Bit late to the party here, but I've been a fan of Dir En Grey for close to 20 years now. By far my favourite band. And seeing you interpret the intricacies of some of the music is great. I love this song because it sounds so discordant, and almost uncomfortable which I feel is fitting.
Additionally, Die and Kaoru (guitarists, Die being the red haired one) use almost exclusively ESP guitars now. Not 100% positive here, but that's their go to. Same goes for the bassist actually, Toshiya. Though, he also has a Seymour Duncan.
In reference to their consistent lineup too. If you go back a few years before '97, all of the band members bar Toshiya were in another band together called La;Sadies going back to about '95 or so where they had a different bassist/lead vocalist.
Yes, you heard that right. Kyo, this phenomenal vocalist was relegated to back--up singing for La;Sadies.

The last time I looked they were using almost exlusively ESP signature guitars. May or may not be the case anymore or even in this performance. I know Die's red electric is an ESP for sure
Interesting to note too, Kyo, the singer, was battling an infection and had a high grade fever (103 iirc) for this performance. He got really sick on stage and has been hospitalized several times during tours

Die is playing his ESP D-DR-7St and Kaoru his ESP D-KV-7St (special edition with a Piezo accoustic pickup & gold sparkling skull). Both are (one of many of) their signature guitars. Toshiya plays his ESP D-TT [TRICK STAR] also a signature.
      Very nice instruments

    Great reaction.
Many songs Kyo (singer) writes are about rape. And my interpretation for this song is about an abortion/homicide a mother had to get because been raped by a father or other near parent . And like the different voices ilhe puts in the songs are also the characters on the story. Like the mother, the baby and sometimes (in other songs), the devil, the crowd, etc etc. He has a peculiar way of writing poetry and he loves to express it through music, and that one of the things I love the most in this band. All others just try to adjust and creates the musicianship to him express it 👌🏼👌🏼 great band, one of my favs of all times 🤘
Their studio songs are really good recorded, but watching them live is always a new experience for the same songs

Glad to see you do this one and hoping for more Dir En Grey, they're very hit n' miss imo but awesome if you get used to their quirks. I'd recommend Ware, Yami Tote from The Vestige of Scratches, Vinushka from Androgynos, and Ain't Afraid to Die from Mode of Macabre. Also Elisabeth Addict from the vocalist's more progressive band, Sukekiyo (the live version)

its always funny funny to hear westerners comment on how "out there" some of these bands are" there in Japan and how they wonder how "Japanese society reacts" when even the west is still pretty reserved about alternative fashion overall as for I feel all of the world. I feel like they would react how any of y our neighbors would react if they saw someone in alternatives fashion, probably mostly negatively bc they are going outside the norm. Tho I feel like in Japan at least alternative fashion people arent as in danger of being harassed/attacked by displeased onlookers like in other parts of the world. Or so Ive heard.
