That's my dad at 1:21 when you showed the San Francisco cable car! He's been a cable car operator for over 20 years, what a random coincidence that I found your video on my feed and ended up seeing my dad at work 😂 thanks for the footage; he's ecstatic to be in a CZcams video haha
I have had friends move to Austin Dallas and Memphis to get away from the high cost of living. They all moved back to San Diego within a year. 🙄 We live the dream.
I recently moved out of San Diego as our landlord sold our house and we had to move. However, moving to Murrieta which is about an hour away from San Diego is nice too and cheaper as we managed to get a big two story house for rent in Murrieta for only about $3000 a month which is not too bad compared to San Diego whereas San Diego, you’d be paying that much for a small shack. Lol 😂
The older I get the more I prioritize community over climate. No matter how nice the sun and beaches are, you will not be happy if you are lonely. Due to the high cost of living, San Diego is a revolving door. Many people come to "live it up" for a bit only to move away later (especially once they have kids). As soon as you make a solid group of friends, they move away and you have to start over.
The happiest person on the planet about the COL in San Diego...our children are priced out of owning a home here or renting for that matter, less they are from a wealthy family, inherit a home or we live on top of each other. IF you bought a home in the early 2000's consider yourselves very lucky/blessed.
Indeed, we did. It was just under 400k, our mortgage is 1,001 and we’re very close to being paid off in under 10 years. I am reminded daily how fortunate we are. 🙌🏽
Bought my 3,500 square foot home on a view lot in Poway on 1 acre in 1999. Let’s just say we are in good shape. Very rare that a home comes on the market in my hood.
Trust me I have lived in San Diego all my life and today year of inflation is insane. People who bought a house in the 1970 are now worth a million and they aren’t even worth buying!!!!
I am very lucky and blessed to be living out here in SD. I started living out here in the late 2000 as an Active Marine. When I got out in 2001, I decided to make SD my official home. It was a struggle with no family or support but I was determined to stay here, by all means. Even if I had to stay in my car. When I say I was blessed, 2010 I was married to a beautiful wife from my home town and we decided to purchase our first home in SD. The prices for housing is so crazy here now, I cannot believe we currently own a home that is worth a 3 quarter of a million dollars! I wouldn't imagine paying that much for my particular home. So yes, buying a home in SD is overpriced but there are people out there that would pay that price sadly.
San diego is crazy expensive and I was actually born and raised here so I've seen the price increase over time. There's nothing like San diego 🌮 shops and I love North Park been there since '92.
It’s definitely expensive but we love this City and everything that has to offer. I feel like I am on vacation everyday. We are not locals, moved away many years ago but I was just not happy. We moved back in 2019 and we couldn’t be happier. We love this city!!!!!
You know thats funny ..I felt like I was on vacation everyday and I lived there for roughly 3 years and I worked every single day but it still felt different it truly has a different feel in SD when you live in a decent part and around sane neighbors not weirdos
@@Jaycation so let's look at the positive ..house prices are rising but the homeowners who pay property tax etc and when people said why do you live there it's expensive ..yes it was expensive and still is but those people that suffered with high mortgages suddenly have major equity and can sell and retire in a small apartment
Do you always stay in the same place? I made my first trip in September and plan to return this year.. Jaycation really helped with Mission Beach info 👍🏾

A Pronto bus and trolley day pass is $6. Lots of attractions by the trolleys, from Little Italy, Seaport Village, Old Town, Gaslamp, etc. Hillcrest, Coronado, University Heights, the Zoo, South Park, etc are also bus accessible.
I recently moved out of San Diego (I lived in Mira Mesa too before our landlord sold the property as we had to move) as we are now living in Murrieta which is a little an hour away from San Diego. Murrieta is a little cheaper than San Diego, but still pricey because it’s still California. However, not as crazy expensive as San Diego. Lol My brother, however, moved out of San Diego back in 2016 with his family and now lives in Oklahoma as he is a now a police officer with Oklahoma City. He said everything is much cheaper out there than California, and he said it was easier getting into the police academy there than in San Diego.
That’s why we moved to another state. I was raised most of my life in San Diego, Cali n still LOVE it, but could no longer afford to live there anymore. Ty for sharing enjoyed it.

I just left after living there for 11 years. Not really a beach or desert person so there was no reason to be crowded in with a bunch of miserable, obnoxiously loud people and paying a premium for it. It’s a great place to visit but not to live.
If you are local, shop at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. Seriously cheap, each one is family owned. Google for a location near you. No deli, limited fresh vegetables but great refrigerator case for milk, eggs, even organics.
Can you please consider doing a series of videos about the neighborhoods that are next to Trolley stations? I don't drive and would love to consider moving to SD, but it seems like you can only live there with a car, so I'd love to see what the neighborhoods are like if you relied solely on taking the Trolley to get around (work, groceries, etc.)
A lot of people take the trolley and bus in San Diego! We have a pretty good system, and you can get almost anywhere that you need to. But if you can afford a car, then driving is definitely the way to go since a 20 minute car ride, could take 1.5 hours or more by public transit. I'm scared of driving so I still take public transit to get to school and work. On the bus and trolley, it'll mostly be people from Tijuana or people from lower to lower middle class areas of California, trying to get to work, going grocery shopping, or going to shopping malls. There are also a lot of students taking public transit since we have a bunch of schools. Mostly people trying to mind their own business. Ngl, there are a lotttt of sketchy people that ride the bus and trolley as well. They usually just go around yelling nonsense, just don't pay attention to them. The closer you get to Downtown San Diego, the sketchier the people. There's also been an increase of homeless people, and they're everywhere, but they tend to gather in Downtown more. On the blue line, San Ysidro up until H street are the safest. Anything after 24th street, up until America Plaza, or maybe Washington St, is pretty sketchy. I'd completely avoid walking around Barrio Logan, 12th&Imperial, Park&Market, 5th Avenue, and City College. I'd avoid the Orange Line as well. In the Green Line, it starts to get nicer the closer you get to Mission Valley and Fashion Valley, which are the nicer malls. At the end of the Blue Line you get to another really nice, bougie mall in La Jolla. I hope this helps!
I am arriving 31March. Trip delayed by over a month due to getting Covid. I am not put off. We have everything covered. Really just food and drink and thanks to your cheap eats videos we will have a great time. We have the hop on hop off trolley and planning on walking a lot. Maybe an Uber or Lyft over to the beaches. Been doing a lot of research. We are heading onto Vegas for a couple of nights afterwards so watching your videos there too. If we see you out and about that would be amazing. Thank you.
For tourists and locals alike there are many things to do here that are free if you have a car: Taking a walk on one of our many beaches like Torrey Pines State Beach, a visit to La Jolla Cove with the view of seals relaxing on the rocks and the ocean beyond as well as art galleries and shops to check out, the pier and boardwalk at Pacific Beach, the last 60's vibe beach town of Ocean Beach where you can have lunch in the casual restaurant on the pier and walk down the main drag to check out the unique stores and people watch, Seaport Village at the San Diego bay area with a beautiful view of the Coronado bridge, sailboats driting along and a walk down to the Midway Navy ship and a wonderful drive over the Coronado bridge to visit Coronado and check Hotel del Coronado as well as the galleries and shops in that area. $700,000 for a one to two bedroom condo in San Diego is expensive but there are ludicrously expensive condos and even homes elsewhere like in Malibu, CA, Santa Monica and even La Jolla.
Another rent factor: building a small 500sqft backyard granny flat to rent out, which would add to the city's rental supply, starts at $300,000. You can buy a proper house anywhere else in the country for that price. I am a SD homeowner and have a spacious backyard. I wish building small ADUs would be more affordable for homeowners - and renters.
SD born and raised but had to move out of state during the pandemic, laid off and no viable options, excessive lockdowns etc. Get paid the same rate now and with a 50% cheaper cost of living, less taxes, cheaper gas, there are some other good options out there, but there's always a trade off. SD will always be home though, paradise. Wishing everyone the best.

we almost moved to San Diego in 2017 but we decided to go to Orlando, what held me back were the housing prices and taxes I just read an article if you make 100 grand in Orlando you would have to make 150 grand in San Diego to live the same lifestyle, Orlando taxes are cheaper but they get you in toll roads, and the heat is unbearable in the summer, with that said I love to vacation in San Diego and hope to go back soon.
I moved from Orlando to San Diego in 2020. Lived in FL my whole life. I miss it but the cost of living is pretty much the same bc the pay is so low over there
correct i live in carlsbad and a 1 bedroom apartment next to my building is charging $2300 a month......no backyard or nothing......also they just built some new condos too and they are going for $4500 a month
Don’t forget to add Poway , Rancho Bernardo , Rancho Penasquitos, Carmel Mountain, Sabre Springs , 4s Ranch , Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch. They’re hella expensive too but the advantage is that your in the middle if you decide to live in those areas in San Diego. Most likely it’s a little cheaper if you go to Escondido or San Marcos
Doest help that a lot of people wanna keep moving out here and drive up the cost of living. Even the foreign investors are buying up everyting. US San Diegan natives are fustrated and its not getting better.
Since we plan to downsize in a few years thought I should sell our home, cash out now, and rent until ready to buy again. But, holy moly has rent gone up. Renting the same size home is more than my mortgage now. Forget that!
Hey homie, Vista here & spot on! 💚 me some California but she ain't cheap. Yet when it comes to what makes this place unique?I mean where else in the USA can one enjoy dolphins surfing in the bioluminescent sea‼️👵🏻
Dude. The Aldi store is the cheapest grocery store. For a chain store Stater brothers had the best prices on meat. Vons/ Albertsons is the most expensive.
The struggle is real and it's only going to become less affordable. Luckily I own and have a great job and thankful everyday I can afford to stay in my hometown.
Our cost of living didn't really hit me until I looked at housing in S Carolina after basic training. It was so much less expensive than southern California.
definitely accurate! SAN DIEGO NATIVE HERE! MY HOUSE WENT FROM 500G TO ALMOST 800G IN 2 YEARS! ITS AMAZING BUT INSANE AND UNFORTUNATE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION! LOOKING TO BUY, BUT GREATEST PLACE TO LIVE THATS FOR SURE !
What ppl don't realize is that unless you own more than one home or you plan to sell your home and move elsewhere cheaper, the rising of home prices don't do any good for homeowners
Home values increase mainly because someone else is willing to pay more, and of course the seller will take as much as they can get..homeowners themselves are in fact causing much of the increases...you don't actually HAVE to sell it for 800G.
@@lonewolf4429 The "someone" is mainly investors and home builders.. if the market is solely driven by actual primary resident home buyers, it wouldn't be this crazy. Real estate is used as an investment tool for many riches
We were going to move back to SD from the Bay Area but it looks like we’re staying up here for a while more. It’s actually cheaper up here because of the higher salaries.
I miss the Grocery Outlet chains in the SD area. They had a lot of the same organic and vegan specialty stuff as Sprouts but for significantly less. The produce was hit or miss though.
I've been trying to move away from here for the last 9 years. Beautiful city unlike NY where you're pretty much just paying for the name and the address. Still not worth it to live here unless you're rich. Politicians and voters here do nothing to make life easier either.
In Serbia it is 5.98$ now and was like 5.4$ for years, and it's now going to be 8.78$ because of crisis. Coffee went up 100% where i live. I pay for car registration 325$ and average yearly income here in Serbia is 7200$, some still work for 5500$. Now imagine me paying that price while having 600$ for whole month
The real REASON why it's expensive? Taxes, government regulations, private interests having a hold on the public officials, lack of natural resources. California in general is expensive because our government gives away a lot of "free" stuff which comes out of the taxpayers' pockets. Owning a small business here is tough, we want to make enough to keep afloat but we don't want to make too much otherwise we'd be taxed at a higher percentage. Basically we'd be working harder to only get kicked down to where the government wants to keep us.
Regarding parking lots in Downtown San Diego. If there is an event, such as a ball game occurring, the lots in downtown will jack up their rates during the event. What usually is $5-$9 will suddenly cost $20. It should be illegal, but it's been allowed for decades.
Those guys who complained that their utility bill tripled had gotten their HVAC stuck with both the heat and air conditioning on at the same time. But my bill went up a ton this year too.
It's not just San Diego it's the whole state of California and my rent is so high here is that the state and the counties and the cities continue to increase the property taxes and add bonds like the city of Tracy which makes your property tax bill go way high and so if you have a rental you have to increase the rent each year to keep up with what the state the counties and the cities are doing with property taxes so look at them because they are the ones who are creating the homelessness and for other older people for all fixed income we cannot keep up with what they are doing especially the cities
If I wanted to move to San Diego making only 63,000 I couldn't buy a house or rent. You said the median income is around 68,000 yearly how do you afford a house 780,000 or pay rent at 2500 monthly. Seems to me you would have to make 250 to 300 thousand yearly
I love the videos and content my brotha. i would love to show up on a video of yours whenever you are down here in Chula Vista. I suggest all of 3rd ave in downtown chula Vista. like La Bellas and The Tavern at the Vogue. and Three Punk Ales
Fantastic video, you pretty much nail most of the reasons! For anyone thinking about moving here, DONT, you would be basically paying high prices for the weather. There is no point to purchase a small 2 bedroom house for $600,000 just for you to enjoy the weather. Plus people in San Diego are weird, and extremely flaky. San Diego is perfect for those people that are: outdoorsy, heavily religious, rich, and extremely superficial.
California has the highest gas prices in the nation. We have a ridiculous "gas tax" which was supposed to go toward fixing our horrible roads but a huge chunk of it has been spent on an over budget high speed rail train to nowhere and to bike lanes for the benefit of bike riders who pay NO tax to ride on the roads which are squeezing cars out. In fact, gas is actually cheaper in Hawaii than in California which makes no sense whatsoever.
I'm a native and can remember when it was super affordable. It's sad and so freaking crowded now. Please, if you're thinking of moving here, just don't.
A lot of employers in SD pay their employees less than similar positions in more affordable areas of the country. My theory is that it’s the insane cost of the overhead (building, utilities, etc.) and they’d rather keep customers happier than employees.
I'm from NYC, the OG of expensive American cities so it takes a lot for prices to startle me, and even I was surprised at how expensive SD was when I visited! But, it's an absolutely beautiful city, so at least you're getting spectacular visuals for your dollar :)

I have friends that decided to move to Tijuana Baja California Mexico and work in San Diego
Aloha…. love this video… love your PADRES shirt.. I lived in San Diego in the late 80’s.. Paradise Hills , National City..born in Hawaii ( loved your Hawaii videos) and now live in Las Vegas.. Your M Resort video was awesome..
Thank you for all your information!!!
GOD BLESS and BE SAFE
we almost moved to San Diego in 2017 but we decided to go to Orlando, what held me back were the housing prices and taxes I just read an article if you make 100 grand in Orlando you would have to make 150 grand in San Diego to live the same lifestyle, Orlando taxes are cheaper but they get you in toll roads, and the heat is unbearable in the summer, with that said I love to vacation in San Diego and hope to go back soon.
Orlando is hot as heck towards the end of May! I remember leaving the college program thinking im going home right on time in the middle of May
I moved from Orlando to San Diego in 2020. Lived in FL my whole life. I miss it but the cost of living is pretty much the same bc the pay is so low over there
This is the nail in the coffin of my dream to move to SD.
Thanks for the heads up
Always!
correct i live in carlsbad and a 1 bedroom apartment next to my building is charging $2300 a month......no backyard or nothing......also they just built some new condos too and they are going for $4500 a month
Really good info
Thank you for your video! I appreciate your honesty. Didn't know about the high parking fees in DT. Thank you!
Shouts to @Jaycation for rockin our colors. Love your videos keep ‘em coming 🙌
Since we plan to downsize in a few years thought I should sell our home, cash out now, and rent until ready to buy again. But, holy moly has rent gone up. Renting the same size home is more than my mortgage now. Forget that!
Prices r ridiculous!
It's a great Sunday morning and hope you will have a great day. Are you going to join us at 9 for Marc's (The Other Me) special stream?
The GOAT is in the house!!
Awesome vlog jay
My dude!
Thanks man 👍
Hey homie, Vista here & spot on! 💚 me some California but she ain't cheap. Yet when it comes to what makes this place unique?I mean where else in the USA can one enjoy dolphins surfing in the bioluminescent sea‼️👵🏻
hey jay.......have a good weekend
Stay blessed!
Our cost of living didn't really hit me until I looked at housing in S Carolina after basic training. It was so much less expensive than southern California.
yea but the weather🤦🏻♀️ though if that is not high on your list....then its worth it
Nice video Jay.
Thanks Kevin!
definitely accurate! SAN DIEGO NATIVE HERE!
MY HOUSE WENT FROM 500G
TO ALMOST 800G IN 2 YEARS! ITS AMAZING BUT INSANE AND UNFORTUNATE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION! LOOKING TO BUY,
BUT GREATEST PLACE TO LIVE THATS FOR SURE !
Love the bay! Hope to visit soon. What part of the bay u live in?
What glasses are you using? I like the frame :)
Don't forget annual passes at SD Zoo and Sea World, community pools - all for residents only!
I miss the Grocery Outlet chains in the SD area. They had a lot of the same organic and vegan specialty stuff as Sprouts but for significantly less. The produce was hit or miss though.
I managed GO SD for two years. I understand this comment. GO East Village DT SD.
I definitely have been adopted by daygo as well. I'm in love with this place.
I've been trying to move away from here for the last 9 years. Beautiful city unlike NY where you're pretty much just paying for the name and the address. Still not worth it to live here unless you're rich. Politicians and voters here do nothing to make life easier either.
I 💕 SD! It’ll always be my home. We’re spoiled, without a doubt.
Gas regular in my area is 5.80 I don't want to go anywhere anymore 😫
In Serbia it is 5.98$ now and was like 5.4$ for years, and it's now going to be 8.78$ because of crisis. Coffee went up 100% where i live. I pay for car registration 325$ and average yearly income here in Serbia is 7200$, some still work for 5500$. Now imagine me paying that price while having 600$ for whole month
Good lord. Haha thats why im filming videos in mira mesa. Not trying to drive anywhere lol
Wowww
@@Jaycation I was thinking going e-bike + solar to charge battery. Would cost me around 500$ to make usable system.
Hey Jaycation, just wondering who is your favorite Spice Girl?
Posh Spice lol
Oh wow, SD rent is expensive, Vegas is almost there, they are raising rent here like crazy
Yeah dude prices r crazy!
Same
Regarding parking lots in Downtown San Diego. If there is an event, such as a ball game occurring, the lots in downtown will jack up their rates during the event. What usually is $5-$9 will suddenly cost $20. It should be illegal, but it's been allowed for decades.
YOUR PADRES GEAR IS HARD ⚾️⚾️⚾️
Thanks! Always reppin the brown and gold!
Good vlog. Crazy gas prices 😳
I live in Vegas and the sales tax here is 8.375 %, so San Diego has 7.75% and is lower sales tax than Vegas, right?
Those guys who complained that their utility bill tripled had gotten their HVAC stuck with both the heat and air conditioning on at the same time.
But my bill went up a ton this year too.
HAPPY VLOG JAYCATION SAN DIEGO EXPENSIVE
Whats up my friend!
Bro it’s more than a million to buy a decent house. Shacks in Mira cost a mil.
I am already there in spirit just gotta get there physically
Can you carry me on your back please when you make the trip?
It's not just San Diego it's the whole state of California and my rent is so high here is that the state and the counties and the cities continue to increase the property taxes and add bonds like the city of Tracy which makes your property tax bill go way high and so if you have a rental you have to increase the rent each year to keep up with what the state the counties and the cities are doing with property taxes so look at them because they are the ones who are creating the homelessness and for other older people for all fixed income we cannot keep up with what they are doing especially the cities
Great Job 👍 respect from Detroit 🇺🇸
If I wanted to move to San Diego making only 63,000 I couldn't buy a house or rent. You said the median income is around 68,000 yearly how do you afford a house 780,000 or pay rent at 2500 monthly. Seems to me you would have to make 250 to 300 thousand yearly
Rent and gas are ridiculously insane.
INSANEx100!
I love the videos and content my brotha. i would love to show up on a video of yours whenever you are down here in Chula Vista. I suggest all of 3rd ave in downtown chula Vista. like La Bellas and The Tavern at the Vogue. and Three Punk Ales
Love the vogue!
Great video
Sprouts is so cheap because they underpay all the employees
A lot of employers in SD pay their employees less than similar positions in more affordable areas of the country. My theory is that it’s the insane cost of the overhead (building, utilities, etc.) and they’d rather keep customers happier than employees.
@@bw1955 naww it's Sprouts look them up on glass door
@@xRE007x I believe it. Just like I believe it was every other technician job posting I looked at. A lot of employers underpay in SD.
Parents just told me gas is up to $6.50 there 😰
Holy crap havent seen it that high yet
Can’t stand how expensive San Diego is
But it’s paradise here in San Diego County
Beach 🏖, mountains 🏔, deserts 🌵 and an awesome city 🏙
My list shows taxes (direct & indirect) are number one.
80$ water bill yeah I pay that here in San Antonio Texas
Bro the beer selection had me hurting. No problem getting non local per se, but Deschutes?!
I'm from NYC, the OG of expensive American cities so it takes a lot for prices to startle me, and even I was surprised at how expensive SD was when I visited! But, it's an absolutely beautiful city, so at least you're getting spectacular visuals for your dollar :)
Yes sunny and 75 most of the year! Its the place i love!
Born here, it is expensive for sure, but I don't think I would like any other place.
I’ll be visiting SD next month , i know it’s expensive but my kids are there and I’m looking forward to it ❤️
You'll love it!
Youll have an amazing time!
Agreed!
Because the weather is beautiful, all year long. I recently heard about water problems. That makes it pricey. Houston is cheap, lots of house for the money. But sooo hot & polluted. 🙉😌😝. And traffic.
Hi Jay, any kababayan who has a rental place you can recommend?
I wish i knew! Check out the fb groups, maybe someone there has a spot!
gas is $6.09 p/gallon in The Bay area
San Diego always crazy in every way but we still love it
If my husband job ever gets a location in san diego I will definitely be moving there. Otherwise I'll stick to my monthly to bimonthly visits on my days off from work. I love it there 😍 💕 ❤️
As born and raised in San Diego, this pretty accurate. Utilities bills are out of control lately. Cox is not available in Mira Mesa?
im from sacramento and it is crazy expensive here too!little less on cost of living, about same on avg for how much people make. We are just an hour from the beach ahah
We always say we make sunshine money.
That is OK, I can relax on Black beach!
I stay young and healthy forever!
