      Not enough security lol.
I far prefer the amazing gated community in Riverside. It's astonishingly easy to secure several high class homes with washing machines and fireplaces and HUGE kitchens if you love cooking like I do.
Upstairs can be your survivors museum double sized bed and armory. Even another room for toys and collectibles. Just a short walk to the gigamart for all the food you could possibly eat along with the hardware and clothing store. Plus big SECURE backyards for all the farming you can handle and depending on which set of McMansion you choose a short walk or short drive to the river and forest for your trapping, fishing and foraging needs.
My FAVORITE place to base in all of zomboid and super easy to secure with not that many zeds.

    My games typically go:
    Spawn in rosewood
Get a car (checking every single cars glovebox as well as keys occasionally being in the ignition and ground nearby, just need gas from the gas station and u can drive any of those)
Loot police, fire station and the army surplus store up the road
Migrate through muldraugh up to Riverside and then set up shop there as my main home base, it's the most post electricity friendly town imo especially because of the big farms nearby and fishing from the river obviously.

    Riverside
-Has an Easy to access PD armory
    - Has a Large School (That Means Easier access to Books and a Larger chance at Generator Magazine, also plenty of furniture you can either disassemble for Nails and wood or use to Barricade the Stairs, also Scissors and Writting items to use on your map)
    - Has EVERY type of Store available sans a Gun shop (Hardware store for the rarer Tools such as propane torch; Book store; Clothing shop; general Markets for food and even a PO with a geberous storage area where you may find Many mid tier loot items.
    Cons
    - PD armory is small and Limited, even if you add Brita's Weapon mod, odds are you will at best find an Auto SG without the mags or mods to make it usable.
-Size, while is has most loot places one may need to get started, this area is still rather Small and that affects the availability of all these types of Loot
Starting Locations not bad, but there's a number of suboptimal spawns anyways
Base Locations, the easier ones are on the Outskirts of the City or on parts without a straight, easy path to the Loot zone (Commercial area), the ones with more easy paths (with a Vehicle to reduce number of loot trips) are in areas with more zeds, meaning you will have to work on both clearing the base plus Barrricading it to ensure safety (e.g: School, is large and as such you need to wipe every last zed there and nearby, then Either Barricade the ground floor or Sledgehammer/Floor removal to ensure your second floor is safe)

The Fish Store or the Bar is a personal favourite because it's not that populated relative to the residential areas. Looting run wise it is somewhere in the middle of the factory, factory storage, and self storage from the Gated Community.
Both are near a rather spacious vegetation so foraging there is viable when times are more desperate.

the Storage facility just below the factory is one of my favourite base spots. You can set up a bed inside one of the already open garages and have not only the chainlink fence keeping zombies out but a nice strong garage door. Put a gate on the fence and you've got a perfect setup.

I have a base idea for Riverside, on the gates community where the houses on the far east parallel with a gate can be blocked off on its both ends and you can have a whole street to yourself or with your friends in multiplayer.
I'm doing the same in Rosewood with the gated community but in a smaller scale but the Riverside houses are better as it is bigger and few of the houses have fireplaces in them.

Riverside to me feels like the easiest spawn, and was the first area where I got some actual traction when starting off. The Gated Community is incredible. There's a set of two big houses with metal fencing on 3 out of 4 sides. Wall in one side and you're all set. The houses are full of books, medical supplies, and last time I lived there I found over 40 combined rifles, shotguns and pistols in all the bedroom closets and nightstands. Once you're more set up you can clear the whole gated community, then you can block the whole thing off, creating a massive compound of mansions

    @phoenixj1985 Před rokem +2

Riverside has basically everything and importantly has a number a book locations. Enigma books, the school, the Mail service depot and the 'Spa' on the NE of the town. The gated community can also contain at least 1 book case per house. It's the only place where I have found everybook in one town without too much effort. It also as several potentially strong candidtes for player bases, all located along the river banks. My favourite is the US Mail Service, but the restuarant nearby would have also been cool. If you spawn in a house near the centre of town, the Mail Service Office and the shops such as the sports too are alsot clear of Zeds. Out of spawn towns, Riverside hs potentially the strongest long term base locations that are in close proximity to both water and a gas station, with the Police Station being directly in between both. The trailer park is also handy if like me, you like to use floating units in the kitchen. There is also always at least 1 chevy cossette outside the bar, on my current run through I have 4! They are the best for towing other vehicles. Another perk is that there are some non spawn towns nearby, both of which have decent stores for finding high tier loot such as the Military surplus store.

I'm inclined to say the Ranger station North of Riverside is a great place to build a truly secure base. You may have to bring your own water, and it's out in the boondocks, but it's surrounded by a double fence. There's definitely potential to build an impenetrable fortress, with plenty of forest around you to provide plenty of concealment, forage, and wood. There is also a trailer park, small gas station, and a warehouse/factory relatively nearby, so once you have secured a water supply, farming needs, and a generator/antique stove, you can pretty much live there safely indefinitely.

In the middle of a forest, just take the road south of the Electromax factory and Gas station going down, then on the intersection take the north-west road. The path itself is sand (or is it gravel). Its a spiral path to get there and I suggest clearing out the zombies by foot before going in with a car, especially after 2 months in as small trees start to grow and be a hazard to your car.

Not a lot of people say this, but I think the TV store in Riverside and adjacent buildings deserve a special mention. It's not the safest or most natural base, but it's already half-fenced in, and with some work and patience, you can make it into a really fun base. A large parking space for all your vehicle needs, two or three (maybe four?) exits you can build a large gate at (or just wall off), and adjacent parking space if you need the extra room. There's plenty of room for farming at the edge, and the store is in a fairly central location, with the gas station being almost just behind it, and downtown just a short walk from it. Even with normal zombie spawns, I rarely get that many zombies wandering over. The only real challenge is in clearing it initially, and finding a good spot for a generator to give the best coverage, since it's larger than 20 tiles. But the base comes with all the video entertainment you need, very secure rooms, a spatious storage room in the camera shop, and a large liquor store that you can easily convert into food storage, since it has a few fridges/freezers. And if you pick up the ice fridge from the gas station, that's even more freezer space! All in one big location.

Riverside High School is a great base location. I set up in the hallway, moving lockers and kitchen stuff, parking cars in front of all the windows and doors on the north and east sides.(and sheets)
Then you have isolation due to the fence around the back, and the cafeteria space, where you wall off the double doors entirely, and add an airlock door behind the kitchen door. After clearing the school staff, it is almost guaranteed to find a key to the school, which gives you plenty of possible lockable door knobs. The secret to getting them is to let the zombies break the door...100% doorknob drop rate if zombies break the door down... yeah. You have desks, books, weapons, storage, food, appliances except tv, and you can sleep on the nurse table. You even have easy access to the roof for generator and water collection, and tons of sinks to plumb, cabinets to move, and if you put the generator near the corner next to the janitor's closet exit door, it will be far enough away that it isn't heard by the hoard. I wall off the admin office front foyer and line that hallway with sinks. The space in the school hallway is enough to line every wall with appliances and lockers, move kitchen cabinets into a back-to-back center island with space to walk all around. The PE field is huge for farming or building with a high fence and trees for cover on 50%. It has good isolation and a great location.

Riverside is good for mid-game and early-game.
The river can supply you with infinite water,
the fishing shop is a LIFESAVER starting mid-game. The rain barrels allow you to store clean water and after there done you can use them.
There's a ton of stores like a pharmacy and furniture stores, tool stores, and even a farming one, early game you can go to a fresh store that has fresh food in it. There's a crap ton of libraries and books in Riverside.
The gas station next to the fishing shop is good for gas (obviously) but it can give you bottles and bottled water, even some orange sodas. And a lot of candy and chips.

Riverside just started yesterday and its way easier then maydraugh. Got half of the magazines just from school. Not so much zombies. If u are learning and want higher dificulty then start in riverside. I wish I knew that before 8 deaths in maydraugh. Used to play it 5 years ago so alot changed.

I wish I could've stopped the video to talk about how you really overlooked the gated community.
1 - SUSTENANCE. There's tons of food and water. Each house has 2-3 bathrooms + the kitchen sink.
2 - ESSENTIALS. Each house has a garage, meaning chances of gas cans and other mechanics tools and tools in general spawning. And, as mentioned, the houses have tool sheds.
3 - LOOT. There are tons of closets in each house, meaning good chances for crowbars, machetes, gun cases, and tools to spawn.
4 - EXP. There are tons of double beds for carpentry experience.
5 - SAFETY. The area is relatively low in zombie population, and the fencing keeps them out extremely well.

Riverside is a great place to start, but I wouldn't stay there long term because it isn't on the main highway and those country roads get very tedious to drive once trees sprout up along the sides

Looks like its got enough nice stuff nearbyish that you wont even need to care about the distance to the other spots as you have more than enough materials for long term survival by the time you clear out riverside and its surrounding area. So if you get bored around month 2 just pack your van with supplies for an extended trip, turn off the generator at home so the place doesnt burn down in your absence and ROAD TRIP!!!! Heh, go clear out a few residential neighborhoods for a mountain of canned goods to offset your veggie (and fishy) lifestyle for a few days then come back with a loaded down van full of luxury goods and spare tools to replace anything that might be getting worn down.
Seriously though, aside from boredom is there a reason to go exploring the other areas? Or would you basically have enough of whatever you need to last theoretically for the next 50 years? Not sure how the long term game works. I know crops are sustainable because seeds are pretty easy to gather and expand on, and fishing means plenty of fresh meat to avoid food related depression and slow starvation from nothing but cabbage. Can you repair generators forever? Or are there diminishing returns on that? Do the gas stations run out of gas eventually? Does it go bad?

Idk, if you're a gun user, West Point is goated. The police station is pretty good, plus the gun store is insane. I've also found loads of guns/ammo in the residential areas. To the west outside of town you have three big houses that have little to no zombie activity, one house has tall fences that zombies can't get through, so you can gate the entrance, plus garage, woods for trapping, and a pond and river within spitting distance. RS is a really nice beginner location, but if you want more loot, and to be in driving distance of better POIs, and plan to go to Louisville, WP is where it's at.

I actually spent several hours populating Riverside with several families and then turning them into zombies, my main character is a girl named Sarah who is 12 years old and is the sole survivor of Riverside, one reason it took hours is because you can only make one character and then quit and load over and over with different characters in the same save game, I look forward to NPCs and when you can have multiple characters you make interact with each other for real, but when they're dead you see all of them together.
