    I find it interesting how militaries and factions often times used their BEST STARFIGHTERS PILOTS as undercover agents a lot. You'd think they'd want to keep them as safe as possible until a starfighter battle took place...

      I guess the idea is, they need to be good enough to escape should the situation arise and they are the target of a hot pursuit, that would require an experience star pilot, that is undercover and not relying on anyone except the provider of the starship or fighter with hyperdrives, and if he got the information he needs, and needs to get out, and to ensure the information will return to base no matter what he may come across, you would need an experienced starfighter pilot

    There are so many reasons why I prefer the old EU (I rarely call it Legends), but one of the many reasons was because the authors weren’t afraid of writing about the small battles as well as the large ones. They put details in what some would consider footnotes of history. Hell, there was a short comic about Mara and Luke’s wedding that put the spotlight on a group of Imperial loyalists who wanted to sabotage it, and they nearly succeeded. Things like that could easily be disregarded to a sentence of exposition.
    I miss the old EU. I miss the creativity that flooded the minds of people like Timothy Zahn, Arron Allston, Troy Denning, Drew Karpyshyn, Karen Traviss, and so, SO many more. I tried to get my brother interested in The Old Republic era but he waved it off as “stretching too much” and said he wasn’t interested in the history and lore of a series he likes. I just want to know if he’s part of a small minority or is that a common belief among the current fandom of Star awards?

And then, the Mon Calimaris start to jump out alongside them. The realization of the actual ownership of the vessels. And seeing ship after ship appear in front of you. And of course, the sickening feeling, knowing that there is no way the planet would drop its defenses to let you retreat in this situation.
    No matter what faith those captains had in the planetary shields. It would be quite obvious that if nothing else, they themselves could not escape. Even if the rebels failed, those captains had to have realized that they would not hold out long enough against such force to survive until reinforcements came.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 Před 5 lety +5

      Yeah but usually they are far cleaner than this. Think about it, creating super storms (which can't be aimed) to destroy several well armoured buildings on a planet with a population of over a trillion people. The civilian casualties would have numbered in the billions, the collateral damage would have devastated most of the planet.
      Really taking the planet would have been far simpler, you don't need a fleet or an invasion. A simple uprising would have cost far less lives, the planets garrison couldn't have numbered more than a few million, I really doubt they could have stopped the civilians simply taking it.

    • @dianabarnett6886
      @dianabarnett6886 Před 5 lety +12

      It's classic siege warfare. When you come up against a fortress with impenetrable defense, you can a) simply go around it and strike at more vulnerable targets, b) surround it and starve the occupants out, or c) find a way to sneak someone in and open the doors from inside. Rebel command decided against A; they wanted Coruscant, and they wanted it before some warlord beat them to it, for both its strategic and symbolic importance. They ruled out B, because they'd be vulnerable to those same warlords if they deployed their forces to blockade the planet, and the civilian population, especially the non-human population, would suffer. They needed a decisive victory.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 Před 5 lety +4

      @@dianabarnett6886 that's the thing tho. Realistically a siege of Coruscant would last at most a few weeks. The planet simply can't feed itself. Yes there would have been civilian casualties but the important part for the rebels is who would be to blame. In a siege the empire is to blame for the deaths as they failed to surrender or share supplies. But with this attack, the rebels are directly responsible for billions of civilian casualties, mass destruction of vital infastructure, and they still had to fight a battle afterwards to take the planet. It's actually reasonable to assume given what would have been destroyed infrastructure wise, that as many as half of the planets population would have died in the following weeks, as all spaceport facilities are damaged, all atmospheric controls are damaged, weather control is damaged (and the storms they caused would last for weeks or even months), the vast majority of key engineers, civil servants and business leaders who a new government would need also live in the upper levels,and can therefore be assumed to either be dead, or hostile to the rebels now due to them trying to kill them.
      Basically what the rebels did is turn Courscant into a giant slum, unable to feed itself, with few if any core systems operating. And the rebellion don't have the manpower to restore order, so without a healthy dose of plot armour, in a single act they just lost all their credibility, and turned most of the galaxies key planets against them As if the cost of liberation from the Empire is the complete devastation of your world, it's just not worth it.

    • @terryforsdyke306
      @terryforsdyke306 Před 5 lety +7

      the plan was to use the storm to overload the power grid, that worked, it did little damage and caused very minimal loss of life especialy when compaired to the exit of Lusanka or the Krytos virus.
      the full plan was to use the construction droid to force evacuation of the mirrror control facility, then take the facility (which worked, maybe a dozen imperials killed) then use the mirror to evaporate a resivour to cause a storm, and use lightining strikes to take down the power grid (again that worked, as storms on Courscant were extremely fierce lightning rods were everywhere, the only real damage was to power relays) that is where the plan hit a problem, there was a second backup power grid, a centeral relay station had to be killed, the concussion missiles on a headhunter were not up to the job but a TIE used as a guided missile was.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 Před 5 lety

      @@terryforsdyke306 yes that was the "plan" but it's BS. This is an EU novel, thus EU figures need to be used for power generation, shield strength, weapons, etc. By that logic it would take a few hundred thousand lightening strikes to bring down the weakest of shields, and probably a few hundred billion to overload a power grid. Yes, SW EU uses stupidly insane figures that have no basis in reality. So going by that logic, the surface of the planet would have had thousands of lightening strikes per square metre, if not more, that would quite literally cook the atmosphere itself, cause building materials to liquify and kill anything. Now take into account that the shield facility would really have been an armoured fortified structure, capable of withstanding turbolaser hits, you may need to scale the storm up even more.
      In truth the Lusankia's launch would have caused a fraction of the casualties this did. Even less if you think about it, the empire wouldn't have had it in an area with lots of civilians around, most industrial, as to lower the chance of anyone accidentally finding it.

      Let's see...the Sacking of Coruscant during the Jedi/Sith Cold War, the Raid on Coruscant during the Clone Wars when Grievous kidnapped Palpatine, the Battle of Coruscant here when the New Republic took the world, the battle when the Yuuzhan Vong conquered it, the battle when the Galactic Alliance reclaimed the world, I want to say one when the Fel Empire conquered it from the Galactic Alliance, the one when the One Sith Empire betrayed the Fel Empire and took it over, the one when the One Sith fell....Coruscant has a proud history of getting its ass kicked.

    Ever since your Covenant vs Vong video, I've been thinking about hyper-aggressive tactics and how to apply them
    More often than not, forgoing finesse in favor of brute force is portrayed as simple-minded and needlessly wasteful (i.e. those often employed by the _Galactic Empire_ or the _Covenant_) but I wanted to hear your opinion. What circumstances would validate using a sledgehammer over a scalpel, assuming you have the resources for both?

My Dad liked to buy me books before road trips so I wouldn't go literally fucking insane. I read this book when traveling to visit one of my uncles (Name of Patrick) and his wife and new kid. I was young. Maybe 13. It had just come out not long ago. What I most remember from that trip? My Uncle's vast back yard, his really cool cat who had eyes that were different colors and who liked me, and the book I read on the car ride.
