Why Being BAD is the First Step to Being GOOD in Art

  • Let's debunk the age-old saying, "practice makes perfect," emphasizing that perfection is an illusion that hinders progress.
We need to embrace the fact that we might be bad at something before getting really good at it. Artists, beginners or pros, often hesitate due to the fear of not being good enough.
Drawing from personal experience, I share my struggle with exploring POSCA art paint markers, a venture I've procrastinated due to fear of incompetence and my busy schedule. This serves as a reminder to everyone, including me, to push past our fear and dive headfirst into what we want to do.
Sadly, the need for instant results has been ingrained in our society, setting unrealistic expectations that deter us from learning and progressing.
The truth is, getting GOOD takes time, dedication, and patience.
Getting to GREAT takes even more consistency and an open mind to learn from mistakes. Perfection? It's pure fantasy.
There's something incredible about dedicating time to a craft and mastering it. Drawing, in particular, is a magical art that allows us to evoke feelings in others through lines and blocks on paper.
It's a craft that, like magic, requires patience and practice.
This week's drawing challenge is BAD TO THE BONE.
Draw the first thing that pops into your mind, post it, and tag #drawordieclub. Remember, you've got to be bad to get good.

I have adhd , so some days i have better patience than other days ; one day if i draw a i.e. , coffee cup and i dont like it , i,'ll redraw it later when i 'settle down' a bit , it really makes a difference ! I dont look at as striving for perfection , more like trying to put more creativity into the same drawing .I've only been drawing for a few months , and am having fun with my progress and processes from people like you and others ...thanks !😊

Awesome man. Thanks for the encouragement as always. I'm certainly struggling to make time for my art both in creating and just enjoying other people's art, particularly comics which I hope to create myself.

As someone who is absolutely a beginner with zero ability, I find sitting down and filling a page to be effective for my practice. I'll do this potentially multiple times in a day, but always at least once. Setting a timer and doing an hour of practice didn't work well for me. Even though I'm just developing my motor skills and working on fundamentals. I basically have zero ability so far, but I want to get past that.

In the words of Jake the Dog, "Dude, sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something."
