Hot tub level gravel pad / base on sloped stamped concrete patio. #57 gravel. Easy DIY. 7 person

- 7 person, 400 gallon salt water Hot tub on a level gravel pad base. The patio is on a slope that is too much, so I had to build something level. Patio is stamped concrete. #57 gravel that is 3.5-5.5 inches thick works great.

@@blakes9402 the gravel is called #57 gravel. I called around to local places that sold bulk mulch and rocks. They will have it, since it’s what people use for driveways.
Gotta have a spa disconnect within sight and no closer than 5 feet from tub.
Because:
A. You need gfci protection.
B. In case articles of clothing get sucked into the intake.
C. For ease and safety for servicing.

If you had to do it over again, do you think you would still press two boards together for a 3" thick rail on each side? Or do you think just a 1.5" thick rail would do?
I am about to start this job and can't see why it needs to be that thick since it is not bearing any load and just holding in the gravel.

How tall is your hot tub without base? I'm looking at buying a 38 inch tall tub and wondering what it's like getting in and out of at 44 inches tall? If you can answer this, I'd appreciate it.
Nice work yo! I'm doing the same project except on the lawn, where i unfortunately probably have even more slope. I'm trying to figure out how deep I need to make it on the deeper side to still have #57 on the shallow side, if that makes sense? Haha, ugh... these projects always turn out to be more work than you think!

I would do this, if I was in your shoes. For your slope, I would use string and stakes. Set the string on the ground that has the least slope (where you need to dig on the highest point). That will be zero (call it PointA).
Run the sting to the other side (PointB) so it’s level. Gap of string at PointB to ground is your slope. Let’s say this gap is 4 inches.
PointA=0
PointB=6
If you increase(gravel on ground) or decrease (digging in ground) PointA will change in the said amount. Therefore PointB will change too.
PointA 4 inches of gravel above ground, then PointB will be 10 inches deep.
If you dig to be level to ground, then dig 4 inches at PointA and PointB will still be 6 inches.

How did the installers slide a hot tub on to the gravel without dislodging it?

Out of interest. How did you cut the slope on the wood with the table saw? Did you mark the wood using the string and then do it by eye?
Yes. Marked the wood using the string line. Basically put the wood next to the string. Cut, then flipped.
Where's your disconnect for the tub?
I first thought of doing this when i found out how much my patio sloped. Looke very different when we moved the furniture. Anyway now that I see it I think I'll go with this. My question is how did you drop the hot tub in place without displacing a ton of pea gravel. Is there anything on top of the pea gravel to prevent this?
Nope. Just the gravel. When they install the tub they have it on the side, then they lowered it. They only had to slide it a little.

how did you cut the wood with accurate angles? that would be helpful if you could explain that. i have the same problem right now
That’s what the string is for at the start of the video. I had the string level and at the height I wanted the frame to be. Then I set the boards next to the line and marked along the string on the board. That’s your cut line. The cut will be “level”, since the board is resting on the patio when you draw the line.

No, your tub has to have a lot installed. Salt water is less chemicals and easier on our skin.
Is there a reason why you didn’t just make the entire base out of wood? Like a mini deck for it to sit the hot tub on.
I thought about doing that, but I figured it could cost less using gravel (less wood), gravel would “hold” more weight, easier to build, water will drain through the gravel, and I don’t have to worry about the deck boards rotting.

Great Video- I had concrete poured for a hot tub but the company sloped it. I guess I wasn't specific enough. Did you build your enclosure yourself ? If so, Do you have a video or picture of it.

I was wondering whether the gravel with its sharp edges, would it maybe cut/puncture the underside of the tub? Just curious as im in the same boat as you were, and this method seems doable, yet just the concern about the gravel puncturing underneath. What you think?
No, not at all. This type packs together tight.
