Chinese soup recipes, especially the herbal ones can look a little intimidating to make as most will struggle to figure out which herbs to use. What I would normally do is just ask my mom or your elderly Chinese aunties suggestions and they’d be more than happy to share a recipe with you. And (if available in your area), just walk into your local Chinese medical halls/shops and ask the shopkeeper to recommend you something.
For this recipe, if you are having a little cough or issues with the throat and lungs, you can give this lung nourishing herbal soup a try. However, this Chinese soup is also suitable for everyday drinking to supplement to your diet seeing that it is very nutritional and healthy. I was also told that this soup is also good for your digestive system and boosts your immunity.
By the way, not all Chinese soups with medicinal value (as some people believe) tastes bad. Just boiling these herbal ingredients together already tastes great - giving off a mild sweet flavour to the soup. However, you can also make it savoury with pork or chicken. Adding the protein gives it that umami-sweet-savoury combination to the soup which is really delicious too.
For this recipe, I used chicken to make a Chinese herbal chicken soup that is nourishing to your respiratory system and may help alleviate some of your cough or throat issues. It is really easy to make, especially if you have a slow cooker, its nearly fuss free.
    Ingredients - 3 to 4 servings
Chicken Legs (雞腿) - 2 whole legs
Lotus Seeds (蓮子) - 12 pieces
Dried Longan Pulps (桂圆肉) - 6 pieces
    Wolfberries (枸杞) - 12 - 15 pieces
Chinese Yams (山藥) - 4 slices
Coastal Glehnia Roots (北沙参) - 2 roots
Solomon Seal Rhizome (玉竹) - 18 gm
Red Dates (紅棗) - 6 pieces
    Figs (無花果) - 2 pieces
    Putting them together
The steps are really easy, just follow these:
    1. Blanch chicken meat in boiled water for about 5 minutes - this ensures that the soup comes out clear and without impurities at the end
    2. Pour ingredients and meat into 2 Litres of water in a soup pot and bring it to boil
    3. Once boiling, lower the heat to a simmer and allow it to continue to cook for another 1hr 30min
    4. Season with salt according to your preference and let it cook for another 10 minutes before serving
    5. If you are using a slow cooker like I did, you just need to add all the ingredients, the meat and the water into the cooker and set it to cook on High for 3 hours or Low for 5 hours
    6. It's ready to Serve!
You can have this soup with your normal meal, pair it with some other dishes or have it as just a chicken soup and rice combo.

There is no limit as far as I know but usually Chinese households have this quite frequently, even once a week also good. And during flu season or cold season, this is very suitable

The nutrients would be in the soup. The flavour from the meat would have gone into the soup as well. Usually we do not eat the ingredients in the soup.
