  • Join Mama Lai and I as we cook Chinese soup! This version is green turnip carrot & chicken. In Chinese, it’s called 青蘿蔔 紅蘿蔔 雞. I grew up with these soups, and I always felt better after drinking it. It’s very soothing and comforting, especially if you’re not feeling well. These soups are especially popular amongst Toisanese people. Toisan is a Guang Zhou province in the Southern part of China. That’s where my Mom is from!
Enjoy this soup! You’ll definitely feel better after drinking it!

Like so many Asian traditions the rest of the world is only just catching up. Asians don’t promote their own culture very well while challenging the onslaught of westernization. Except for Japan who promote select Asian culture as if it was wholly Japanese, a case of cultural colonization. And Japan excel at presentation. Sometimes the packaging is better than the content.

4th generation Chinese American here, my grandfather side was also Toisanese. My dad also referred to the dialect they spoke as farmer language too so that was really neat. It's great that you know some Cantonese as my family doesn't speak it anymore. Thank you for posting your videos with your mom, you are so underrated! I definitely have to give this recipe a try to learn more about Toisan food/culture.

Love to hear that Toisan!! I grew up drinking all of the different canto soups, so thanks for sharing these recipes, Cantonese soup making is truly an art.
Just a small correction: Toisan actually isn’t in Guangzhou (which is a city), it’s outside of Guangzhou in Guangdong province.

Thanks for the correction- I misspoke in the video. And yes, during this video, I learned the base and process for the soups is similar, though the ingredients can vary. I'm excited to make more in the future!

First gen Chinese here. I love these videos because it reminds me of my childhood. It's so nice to have your mom teaching, as my mom did very little teaching - just cooking and expecting me to observe and learn.

This is the first time I heard you and your mom speak Toisan. I felt like the only kid in school who spoke it while my other friends spoke Cantonese, Mandarin, Chiu Chow, and Vietnamese. I feel the tones in Toisan are more guteral and flatter compared to Cantonese.
I grew up always drinking soups with almost all my meals. My mom made soups all the time and some were very medicinal and not fun to drink as a kid (especially the bitter ones). It’s very true; we Toisan people drink lots of nutritious soups like this. Although, I don’t think I’ve ever had this one. It looked very tasty. Your parents are so cute! More cooking videos with your parents please.

Hello! I asked Mom your question. She says you're unable to substitute pumpkin seeds/ sunflower seeds for almonds. The almonds from the Chinese market are completely different from those sound in the Western supermarkets. She also said you cannot substitute radish, unfortunately.
