  • The GORE-TEX Brand is doing science-based innovation for over 40 years. It’s part of our DNA.  Our technologies are a major component of jackets, footwear and gloves from your favorite outdoor, athletic and lifestyle brands. The basis for all our technologies is an extremely thin membrane. We bond this membrane to high-performance linings and outer textiles. It’s this construction that’s then used by the brands to create and sell the finished products. We work closely together with leading brands globally to create high-performance products that defy all weather - from the summit to the city center, from mountains to main street.

    Kudos to Gore-Tex on a very slick video! However, it completely omits that the vast majority of Gore-Tex waterproof-breathable membranes are made from PFC-based PTFE. With a Higg Index value of 383, PTFE has among the highest environmental impacts of any textile raw materials. As outdoor gear buyers are increasingly concerned about sustainability and the chemistry used to make their clothes, it would be great if Gore-Tex could make a video showing how it treats the waste water from its PTFE polymerization process, and whether that water is 100% PFC-free when it is released back into the environment. Given that Gore has been making PTFE for nearly half a century and is one of the biggest producers of PTFE on the planet, this would be helpful information to know. #cleaneralternativesexist #PTFE #PFAS #PFCs #greenwashing

    @Gore-Tex Brand: Waterproof and windproof is excellent but if I buy a winter jacket, gloves, hats, and boots, what do you recommend for insulation so I don't freeze to death when I'm out in -1 or -25 degrees Fahrenheit? I'm having a very hard time (being 6'3" 250lbs) finding a coat, gloves, and especially a windproof warm hat. Nothing bothers me more than my ears getting cold.

      @@incomemaker2475 I'm having difficulty finding a 3x tall with down in it. I had a coat with Gore-Tex on the outside but 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation on the inside which is very warm, and breathable, but so much less bulky than down. Also, it is very even where as down can settle in an area so you, over time, have cold spots and it makes it incredibly bulky. I still will be very happy to look at a down jacket because maybe they make them better than 40 years ago. I appreciate the suggestion.

My goretex arc teryx jacket is fine so I'm having trouble understanding why such a difference. *I realize there are different version of goretex but both jackets are labeled as normal gt.

      @@smokintoomuch8819 my comment was based on the fact that, like others, I’m sick and tired of buying high end products that don’t do what they are supposed to. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I want waterproof then wellies and a plastic bag are the only items that are really gonna keep the water out.

      @@markevansangling agreed, NF products are poser shite, ive been mountaineering with jackets that cost a 5th NF ones do and they performed better. GT stuff has been pretty consistent but when I really get hot all the breathability in the world wont help, I tend to wear cool max tshirts that dry quickly and layer up when I get cold.

    Is it water proof, or water resistant or repelant?
    When you pour water for 2 hours, it wont penetrate?

    • @GORETEXBrand
      @GORETEXBrand  Před 7 měsíci

      Original GORE-TEX products are waterproof. Materials in GORE-TEX jackets have a water column of at least 28 m (ca. 91 ft). This can be compared to the standard for waterproof clothing of 1.3 m (ca. 4 ft) or kneeling on a wet surface, which creates pressure equal to a water column of ca. 15 m (ca. 49 ft). The water column is no indicator of functionality or durability of a GORE-TEX jacket, which is why we prefer to concentrate on the correct construction of a garment as well as communicating the correct use for its intended purpose and its care instructions. Our author Jim took this to the test for our blog here: www.gore-tex.com/blog/is-goretex-waterproof

    Its confusing, smaller than a drop so drop cant enter but bigger than molecule of water doesnt it mean that water can get in once it is not in drop like state?

    • @GORETEXBrand
      @GORETEXBrand  Před 2 lety +1

      It means that sweat in form of water vapor can escape the garment while water droplets, for example, rain, cannot enter. That way the garment keeps you continuously dry and protected from the elements, even during highly aerobic activities. For details on the different GORE-TEX technologies click here: bit.ly/3DT6zLG

      @@GORETEXBrand stll not clear, if water molecule can get out it can get in as well, if you are talking about surface tention of water that keep it in drop like state ok but once it brakes that tention it can dampen any material no matter what you do, water can get thrue micro pores of concrete 20 cm thick if given enough time so that is unrealistic claim. For a light rain and short period of time its ok but more than that is certainly not.
